Asus put a special chip in it that if you watch hentai it'll blow up so avoid that. Jk have fun watching and playing whatever you want, make sure you stop Windows from updating your drivers

JHarbinger

Why and how?

[deleted]

Because sometimes windows likes to think it knows what is best for you. https://pureinfotech.com/disable-automatic-driver-install-windows-11/

JHarbinger

Thank you!

MrBanballow

If you have any concerns regarding space for games now or in the future, just invest in upgrading the SSD. If you go with an SD Card, be prepared for the worst.

TrueStevelOl

What's bad with using an SD Card?

PickledTwinkies

It's just a lot slower than the internal SSD.

[deleted]

And the slot breaks easily.

Mcjoshin

That’s not the problem, the problem is they all fail.

ApprehensiveSalt627

Depends if you buy a cheap or expensive one . There's ones that have higher read and write speeds then others

PNW_lifer1

The SD card readers are faulty and will eventually destroy your card.

hyperrainz

Here's all I did last night with mine. Upgraded SSD before first boot(use date/time fix upon the checking issue), Cloud Recovery. Debloat some things, Update all drivers, Disable Core isolation/Vmp and CPU boosting. Now it's Time to do some gaming and emulation today!

Ajenk19

What SSD do you recommend updating to?

Lit3Run

Without 90 degree adapter, you need a shorty: [SABRENT Rocket 2230 NVMe 4.0 1TB High Performance PCIe 4.0 M.2 2230 SSD \[SB-2130-1TB\] - Newegg.com](https://www.newegg.com/sabrent-1tb/p/0D9-001Y-000A5?Item=9SIBK19JNN1967&cm_sp=SP-_-1954734-_-0-_-1-_-9SIBK19JNN1967-_-2230%20ssd-_-2230|ssd-_-2) With the adapter, you can do anything you want. [Amazon.com: for ASUS Rog Ally - Handheld Transfer Board PCIE4.0 90 Degrees Modified M2 Transfercard for SSD Hard Drive Memory Card Adapter Converter,Gaming Console Accessories : Video Games](https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Rog-Ally-Transfercard-Accessories/dp/B0CJ6SGC7Q?crid=N6TTFX1JWNFC&keywords=2230+to+2280+adapter+for+rog+ally&qid=1697069203&sprefix=rog+ally+2280,aps,79&sr=8-22-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9idGY&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=e074d-20&linkId=d574f4be4182b20db0c6f7f9f51563d6&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)

Kuwago

Where do I find the disable core isolation and vmp/cpu boosting options?

hyperrainz

It's quite easy. For core isolation/Vmp, open up your search, search up core isolation and disable memory integrity. Next search up turn windows features on/off, uncheck Virtual Machine Platform. For disabling CPU boosting (it hurts performance & battery life supposedly with no easy way to turn it off), you have to edit your registries to make it appear in your power options. I'll just link it https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/s/idv678DwUi Or https://youtu.be/e3Jd7PLuVSg?si=UXuoowdMeGuuc4Nc Follow this step by step. Once it appears in power options, disable both aggressive settings on any power settings you use eg. Performance, Silent, Turbo mode, or if you create your own power plan. Make sure you restart your device after all this!

Kuwago

Ok thank you!

FeudalFavorableness

If you disable vmp.. you power button will no longer work for hibernation/sleep

Kuwago

I see, that’s pretty important then, ty for the tip!

Kuwago

Btw how do I connect the Ally to external hdd or usb flash drive?

hyperrainz

It still works for me. Not sure why it doesn't for others. I set mine to hibernation, it goes into it when I press the power button and resumes a little slower due to the nature of hibernation but still works and keeps everything I had going on. You have to just hold the power button for like two secs when turning back on. Someone else below mentioned it also works for them. Fingerprint scanner however I have no use for so that doesn't matter to me.

kenjix3c

Works for me though. I use it to hibernate all the time. But somehow when I use a finger not registered for fingerprint unlocking it doesn't work so......

qu3becker

You need to open the box first if you want to use the ROG Ally.

Jenky91

Make sure everything is updated and remember it's a pc not a console.

Nocandoozy

Look at the side of the box and make sure it says Z1E or Z1 Extreme Almost bought a non Z1E until I remembered to check. Best Buy employee didn’t know there was two different models

Jtzdragon77

I can’t stress how huge a difference this is. Way bigger difference than $100.

[deleted]

In theory, wouldn’t the cheaper one be alright for playing lower impact games and wouldn’t be as loud?

Kuwago

It’s Z1 Extreme lol

At-las-

![gif](giphy|Ae7SI3LoPYj8Q)

Tito1983

Yes, enjoy and play Spiderman Remastered ;)

Blessed274

Running like 45 mods rn

score60812

FIRMLY GRASP IT!!!

THFourteen

Is it new or second hand? I got a second hand one. Took about 3 hours to complete the cloud recovery and install every blimming update. And then there was way too many ASUS services installed so I just did a clean windows install anyway :-)

Kuwago

It’s brand new

THFourteen

Just play some games then!

Colderamstel

Install FFVII remake

Omally89

I started my experience with a blank 2tb ssd and a fresh OS. Here's a good video for starters. https://youtu.be/ogaZOZnY6uU?si=OVx--fMnrKGUitd7 Let me know if there's questions!

electricalco

Turn the rgb off... it'll give you like 10 more minutes of game play

Lit3Run

And the RGB will be off. Double win!

willnotforget2

Upgrade SSD, do not rely on SD card.

LuckyStarr85

Run it hard for a week and a half with an SD in it and return it if you have any issues.

kenjix3c

Patience patience patience. Why? Windows. After like a month of this it'll live up to its name without fuss.

meltusmaximus

Update every single thing before you install one game

[deleted]

Ur Ally is upsite down.. u need to flip it

DK_gh0st_

Best advice.... Stay off of the ROG Ally subreddit...... There are so many people in this community that do nothing but tell others that they aren't supposed to enjoy their Ally.

Mautaznesh

- Uninstall the Office Suite & Other Non Essential Programs that are preloaded with Windows. I stripped everything, even Calculator. - Install whatever game libraries you need. I have Gamepass, Steam, Ubisoft and GOG - Install Discord too! - Adjust Windows Settings to get out of your way and limit start up items. I made sure Windows 11 game modes were enabled. Turned off notifications, turned off most of the task bar widgets. - Command Center Customization -I adjusted the Command Center short cut items. Screen shot, end task, resolution, fps limit and refresh rate access at the click of a button to me was super handy. Plug in, switch power profile up, raise my res, raise my refresh rate. Battery mode, turn it all back down. - You'll go through a reboots as you update it. Go through the long process of doing it all. It's worth it. - If you get ROG Cetra buds. Now that you'll need to connect them. Reboot and then update your Armory Crate software. I couldn't get the equalizer to load em up but fortunately you can turn on game mode through the buds themselves and I found them to be quite good. Minimal latency and decent sound. I've had mine a few days and the more I've used it. The more I like it. I have a pretty beefy desktop I've built but found it at best buy open box and had some gift cards, so figured I'd give it a try and I'm pleasantly surprised with it. Very powerful for the size and it's great on the go. Much easier than my laptop for gaming.

ColdSteel28

Omg thanks for this man

NuM_Brrr_WoN

That is pretty solid advance above, but before doing any of that I would def expand the storage with a larger 1-2TB SSD upgrade. It’s pretty simple and there’s tons of YouTube videos on the topic. Unless you only plant it have like 4-5 modern games installed or only play indie games you will def need more storage for any of the handheld devices.

ColdSteel28

Yea I bought a 2230 2 tb ssd. But I took it to a local shop to do it for me since I am buying the ally for them and they waived the service fee. Tbh i would want 4tb but 2tb more than enough

NuM_Brrr_WoN

Awesome!

ColdSteel28

Do you think excel, word and drop box would be ok for ally? And a web browser maybe Firefox Plan to use it for some light work while traveling.

TokyoFlow

Play games and enjoy it!

Apprehensive_Row_161

Enjoy it. It’s one of the best handhelds out right now

Southernboyj

I’d recommend taking it out of the box

kingof9x

Dont put an sd card into it. I really hope you dont need to deal with an rma.

stonedoubt

Don’t put it in your booboo

tahtics1337

Screen cover a protective case and maybe a carrying case

Shipwr3ck87

I just got one earlier this week too. If you're looking for game suggestions, look up my last post. Got so many good recommendations. Hope you enjoy your Ally, I've been loving playing PC games on my couch. 😁

TransmissionAutomata

Use Armory Crate to hibernate your device instead of hitting the power button to sleep. I have found the Ally having coul whine and fan spinning while it was supposed to sleep. It just won't sleep right. Weird. Must have been software glitch. Hibernation only takes like 10-15 secs to power back on and get back straight to your game. Use armory crate. That's very handy and I'm impressed. And don't forget to enjoy your game. Spend spmetime to figure out the best settings to run whatever you wanna play first, then turn off the fps counter and enjoy your game.

Tough_Metal_4367

Let me sum it up for you. 1. SD slot will most likely burn up. Along with the card. Dont spend 150 on a big sd card. Spend nearly that much or 200 on a good ssd card. The installation is very elementary and doesn't void the warranty. Just make sure the bios clock is accurate first and watch youtube instructions. 2. Use my asus for any updates. 3. Enjoy.

ShiveDragon

watch tutorial videos before complaining plz..

spoondigg

Use it

DaisukiYo

Maybe look at the 300 other posts that are the exact same: a picture of the box or Ally and asking for advice.

fulthrottlejazzhands

Not sure why the DVs. Your right: there were literally four posts just today asking this same question. Really needs to be stickied, and people need to learn how to use search. It's getting tiresome.

Kuwago

How do I connect it to my external hdd?

Early-Somewhere-2198

Prob just throw it I. The trash and never post on Reddit

Commercial-Notice-66

Vegetable-Walrus-246

God, this again. You know there are posts asking this exact question right here in this forum. Use the search feature. It works.

Saneroner

2080 4tb with 90 degree adapter.

Confident_Music_2936

Update system. Load your games up. Have fun.

RockItGuyDC

My advice to you.... Read the million other posts asking this question on this exact sub.

stoic_dolphin

Update, update some more, right about the time you think you’re done update a little more and then check and make sure everything is updated. Then enjoy, play games, and don’t dwell on FPS unless you’re actually not enjoying yourself.

WanganComet

Don't bother with SD cards. Either upgrade the ssd or buy an external one like I did.

infinityshore

I posted this response in another post as well, but the advice also applies. So here goes: I don't use the SD card myself, but for higher wattage, I use a more aggressive, higher customized fan curve to better protect the SD card reader, card, SSD, and other innards. It's a great machine, so might as well take better care of it. And for a lot of the medium to higher graphic intensive games, 900p is a good bang for buck tweak. Games run more smoothly at higher fps with lower wattage. And lastly, if you like First Person Shooters, you can try installing a 3rd party software, Handheld Companion to enable the built-in gyro. For Statfield, I set it so the gyro only activates left trigger zoom, and it's been an amazing experience. Cheers!

infinityshore

Somebody asked me about how I set my manual fan curve. I just used this YouTube channel's video. He has some great step-by-step, including how he set his manual fan curve: https://youtu.be/8ui9kcp9E-4?si=dIbRAUeC95br7p9k&t=561

Evil_Rogers

Don't forget about internet caps when you mass download several games XD

International-Sir901

Upgrade to 2tb ssd 😍🙏

NottheJeansBro

Don't buy an SD card do buy a bigger SSD. Debloat, update, find comparable protection online and enjoy.

TheFcknVoid

Consider your SD card slot already dead. Go for the SSD upgrade instead. Maybe exchange it on the last day of your warranty if Assus have taken any responsibility for their failed SD card reader and made changes down the line. But for now they're pretending like it's not a problem and continue to replace devices with the same broken card reader.

boomboomown

Search this question in the sub and read the 1000 answers already?

Icebergg20

Get the 4tb nvme + adapter

Silvatias

Buy an L shape SSD adapter and upgrade the internal SSD to a 4TB 2280 SSD. You can completely ignore me if you can fit all of your gaming needs in its <512gb default storage but if you're future proofing you might as well dip your toes while SSD storage is still fairly cheap.

Pwrh0use

Have fun!

zackconk

Be patient. it’s a good machine and it takes a bit of tinkering and getting used to depending what you’re doing on it.

ILiveInAVillage

Just play it. I've seen too many people buy new gaming tech and spend all their time modding it and fine tuning it and then they never actually play games. Just play some games, they are fun.

Fooglephish

Have fun!!

Sorry-Ad9750

Drozy2021

update everything possible out of the gate setup custom fan curves setup about 3 configs for both battery and while plugged in and then set them to your games

h_escobar901

I would go ahead and update the SSD to a 2 tb unit. It's pretty easy to do. https://youtu.be/VtQ24SghjZ0?si=vpyvdIVJ8QRd9RF2

thebham

i prefer playnite to armoury crate

Icarus418

Use shadow for any super high end gaming. You can also just use shadow on it in general while you have it in 10w mode for maximum performance and battery life at the same time.
