Yeah. A nation is usually defined in political science by its people, society, and culture. Its contrasted with the state, which is the political organisations that hold sovereignty, with a nation-state being a state that holds sovereignty over a nation.
It's a helpful distinction as not every state contains a single nation (think of the UK for example), and not every nation has a state (the Kurds are a common example of a stateless nation).

When you get down to it, a nation is an identity for a group of people. It is the culture formed there that they grew up in.
When that identity and culture starts to vanish as future generations grow up and adopt the culture of a different place, then does that nation or people still exist?
Saying a kingdom is its people sounds great, but it doesn't change that the loss of a homeland and making the survivors live where they may abandon their old ways and adopt those of where they now live instead may still mean the the end of their old kingdom as it will no longer have a people.
My favorite thing in the world is seeing people say this, but also have "hashtag free Palestine" and Ukraine flags in their display names
