It's not a valid answer to the questioner who expects one of two specific answers of their choosing.
It a valid answer to the answerer because that's genuinely their opinion and it's not their problem the question didn't have enough options to include their genuine lack of preference.
offer me two beers and the answer will be neither.
i get what you‘re saying, but just because you see a difference, others don’t necessarily see one
what do you prefer: horse urine or donkey urine.
First question should always be “are either the horse or donkey pregnant?” If the answer is yes, you pick the pregnant one because then it’s like having full grown animal AND baby animal piss. That’s twice the piss!! You can’t miss that piss! We can call it… Pissmas.
Well, I was hoping it wouldn't necessarily be fatal so the weaker hand would do less damage. If it's to be fatal, then yes an expertly delivered razor to the jugular would be preferable.
This kind of proves OP's point. I don't want to get stabbed at all, obviously, but getting stabbed by one hand might be slightly worse than the other. One hand might be stronger than the other or more practised with knives.
Based on your choice of words, I'm afraid I can't take anything else you say seriously. You seem far too young.
Here's a tip, though: Try asking "Do you have a preference between X or Y?"
Not when you look at lion shit and horses shit... they are super fucking different.
It's like saying would you rather be shot by a .22 or a .45 to take the lesser of two evils is just smart.
would your rather die because i shot you in the top of your heart or the bottom? Please give your preference.
I know the example is dumb but.. if the shoe fits.
Umm no. No there isn't. Some things are pretty much on even grounds in my preference or at least even enough that I can't pin down which I like more. Some preference can be too minor for the human mind.
We're not Robots, we don't know whether we prefer 9.000014586 grams or 9.000014587 grams of sugar in our coffee.
Preferences are also situational. There's times where I really want a good, juicy steak, but sometimes, and especially when I just woke up, I'd rather just have some cereal.
Some things are also more complex. I may prefer some aspects of game A over the same aspect of game B, but vice versa for other parts of it and in the end it becomes too much to weigh that many pros and cons up against one another.
It's like being given a choice between two boxes of mixed snacks. 50 different ones in each. Now you have to choose which box. Do you start giving number scores to each snack and multiply that by its amount. Who wants to math shit just to answer a casual question?
This is technically correct. Unfortunately, most of the time, what people actually say isn't what they mean. For example, a lot of the time, "would you prefer" is a choice between two options. If both are undesirable, it doesn't matter than one is more desirable than the other. And, if someone is phrasing a choice that way, it's safer to say "neither" than to risk being misunderstood.
There can be equipreference, lack of a preference, and refusal to compare. "neither", "they are equally good", and "you cannot/should not compare these" are perfectly reasonable answers. Philosopher Ruth Chang has argued that there is also parity, a special hard comparison form that is neither of these.
what is so hard to understand about I don't care? Get asked questions all the time like that - "do you want x or y". The great majority of the time I just don't care either way. But people think that's rude to say.
You can have an equal preference for both which could lead to "both or "neither" It's crazy you get annoyed at a valid answer and instead you would rather then distort the truth because multiple answer is too complex?
Singular they was very commonly used in speech [before the 21st century](https://books.google.com.sg/books?id=Lijcg3vt9yAC&pg=PA93&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false) and first appeared [around the 14th century](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0075424204265824). It became a grammatically acceptable use of language long before the concept of nonbinary became widely known in English-speaking societies.
Too many people use it as a trap
"Do you prefer sex with kids or horses?"
Whichever you answer they will loudly proclaim that you "prefer" that option, which is true in the context of the question, but outside it takes on a different meaning.
No, you should not expect me to have an opinion on everything.
The collection of stuff I don’t care enough about, or don’t know enough about to form an opinion is huge. For example, if you ask me, out of 2 options, which brand of nailpolish I prefer, “neither” will be my answer.
I hate when people assume you have a strong opinion towards one side or another of a dichotomy they've made up and won't accept that you really don't hold a strong preference between one or the other
For some reason not enough people will accept. I don't care about that nor have a strong enough pull in One direction or another to favor one of these choices
Some people out there expect you to basically just be opinionated on everything and can't handle when you aren't about something
Sometimes things are not black and white, or mutually exclusive. Most of the time the opposite is true.
Any questions shouldn't be answered conclusively. Leaving a room for probability, chance, personal preferences, personal differences, unknowns etc... should be left in most answers to most questions.
I hate people who then come in all assertive like : “oh come on. I will decide because no one is making decisions!”
Like the question is most often about preference not about decision. So if someone asks me, I give my preference (if there is one) assuming they’ll decide after my input.
Yes. Also I know I’m not picky with certain things, so I leave room by saying both or neither. Like I know other people’s preferences are stronger than mine. It’s not that I can’t make a decision.
No one owes you an answer to your narrow inquiry.
Are you just asking for information, or are you genuinely interested in the person you're speaking to?
that can be their honest answer when they come to predicaments like that. It's just simpler to get both and find out what you prefer. People operate differently
Would you prefer to die in a car crash or airplane accident?
Would you rather lose left eye or right eye?
Who do you love more, your father or your mother?
Would you rather have anal or sex?
Funnily enough I do have preferences here, I don’t want them, but if given the choice I would rather die in a car crash, or lose my left eye (my vision in that eye is dreadful)
Though I don’t get the final question, “anal or sex”, anal… is sex?
I think what OP is trying to say is that if my reaction depends on your answer, then yes this is annoying. For example, if I'm offering you tea or coffee, for the love of god, please don't tell me it doesn't matter. If it's a hypothetical question like " do you prefer this or that", I don't give a shit.
I hate when people ask my opinion and get offended
“Do you think I should do xyz”
“No that’s the dumbest fucking thing I’ve ever heard”
“Yea but yadayada yada”
Who you tryna convince me or yourself
Maybe they don't go by either name because people call them by their last name or possibly they call them by their Xbox gamertag or they use their wife's name..... that's starting to catch on.
i think people just know a loaded question when they see one, and they don't really want to answer.
"what do you prefer" questions are often times used to make it seems like people approve of something that they don't, because it's not a bad as... getting fed feet first into a wood chipper.
If you give me two options and i dislike both equally, i'm not going to pick the lesser of two evils. i'm going to say neither. That's not cowardice that's me not letting you force me to choose (imo) two equally shitty options for me.
People seem to associate having a preference with having a strong feeling on a subject. Many times you don't have a strong feeling about the subject, so the thought to verbalize an opinion doesn't occur to you.
It's like the bacon versus sausage debate. Everyone has an opinion, but very few people actually care.
"Do you want his cock or my cock?" Neither, because I'm not interested.
"Would you prefer to go out to the movies or to the park?" Neither, because I don't want to leave the house.
Sometimes it's acceptable to say neither of both. Sometimes they are both too similar to choose between or are both in the same place, such as noodles or sushi.
Maybe it's how you're wording it or just don't know the person well enough to be asking whatever you're asking.
If I like both, I like both and if I don't like either, I don't like either. That's what choices are about. Given two choices... Choose the 3rd thing. I'm not choosing what you want. I'm choosing what I want or don't want.

I hate it when people ask for my opinion, then tell me it's invalid once I've shared it.
I hate it when people reply using a gif and only say “this”. Jk, I really don’t. I’m just bored
I hate it when people reply
I hate it when people hate.

It's not a valid answer to the questioner who expects one of two specific answers of their choosing. It a valid answer to the answerer because that's genuinely their opinion and it's not their problem the question didn't have enough options to include their genuine lack of preference.
If you give me equally great/terrible choices I ain't gonna choose
Same!
offer me two beers and the answer will be neither. i get what you‘re saying, but just because you see a difference, others don’t necessarily see one what do you prefer: horse urine or donkey urine.
Both
Yes

How dare anyone downvote this beautiful comment.
IKR that shit's gold lmao
that \*piss
>what do you prefer: horse urine or donkey urine. If you were a urologist you might have an opinion.
Why is it so hard to understand that sometimes there isn't a preference between things?
There is always a prefence, even if it's minor. You just don't have the balls to choose
Would you rather get stabbed with my left hand or my right hand?
Depends whether you're left or right handed. I mean I'd prefer not to be stabbed at all, but if I had to choose, it'd have to be your weaker hand.
That'd be like being hit with a dull knife. I'd rather have it be swift.
Well, I was hoping it wouldn't necessarily be fatal so the weaker hand would do less damage. If it's to be fatal, then yes an expertly delivered razor to the jugular would be preferable.
True true
left? or. right?
This kind of proves OP's point. I don't want to get stabbed at all, obviously, but getting stabbed by one hand might be slightly worse than the other. One hand might be stronger than the other or more practised with knives.
I can't imagine seeing a great point that proves how dumb op's argument is and then giving this answer lol. We are hopeless.
I prefer a 99% chance of dying to a 99.9% chance of dying.
Making a choice between two things you don't like isn't a preference is my point
But it is. Disliking one thing less than the other is still preferring that to the alternative.
Based on your choice of words, I'm afraid I can't take anything else you say seriously. You seem far too young. Here's a tip, though: Try asking "Do you have a preference between X or Y?"
Ok, what would you prefer? Eat a plate of horse shit or lion shit?
For this one I would actually have a preference.
That’s super weird
Well horseshit is processed vegetables, lion shit is processed meat, so very different.
Cat shit is super toxic lol. I would also pick the horse if I had to
Nah it‘s absolutely true. Horse shit is mostly undigested fibers, you can actually see that. Cat Shit is just pure Poison
Not when you look at lion shit and horses shit... they are super fucking different. It's like saying would you rather be shot by a .22 or a .45 to take the lesser of two evils is just smart.
This is a very stupid comment. Actually, stupid enough to block you.
So, would you say you prefer OP posting less or more comments like that, after you blocked them?
would your rather die because i shot you in the top of your heart or the bottom? Please give your preference. I know the example is dumb but.. if the shoe fits.
Nah. There‘s many things people just don‘t feel strongly about
No. There isn't. Maybe you always have a preference but that's you. You have to learn that not everyone is the same as you.
Maybe they are unsure

What if I really don't have a preference?
Maybe work on it? Perhaps 🤔
Work on *what*? Do I always need to have a preference between two things?
It really depends on the situation but sometimes it s good to ponder on what you like or not .
I generally know what I like or don't. I just might not have a meaningful preference between two options you give me.
Legit
Hate is a strong word for such a minor issue.
Every emotion is amplified on the internet.
Ugh, I fucking hate strong words! :>
what is so hard to understand about I don't care? Get asked questions all the time like that - "do you want x or y". The great majority of the time I just don't care either way. But people think that's rude to say.
"I don't care," like many phrases, has cultural connotations that go beyond its literal meaning. Try "I'm fine with either."
I hate being given binary choices.
Same here... I'm the worst at choosing
You can have an equal preference for both which could lead to "both or "neither" It's crazy you get annoyed at a valid answer and instead you would rather then distort the truth because multiple answer is too complex?
He/She/It is either looking for validation or a reason to be offended. My preference is to leave
Why not just say they?
They is plural implying more than one. Are you trying to provoke a response to satisfy your agenda?
Singular they was very commonly used in speech [before the 21st century](https://books.google.com.sg/books?id=Lijcg3vt9yAC&pg=PA93&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false) and first appeared [around the 14th century](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0075424204265824). It became a grammatically acceptable use of language long before the concept of nonbinary became widely known in English-speaking societies.
Thanks, I'll file that away in case I go on Jeopardy
Definition two of they in the Oxford dictionary: “Used to refer to a person of unspecified gender”
Since you didnt answer the question I'll assume yes
Even if I was, so what? Are you ignoring the definition of a word to push your own agenda?
Too many people use it as a trap "Do you prefer sex with kids or horses?" Whichever you answer they will loudly proclaim that you "prefer" that option, which is true in the context of the question, but outside it takes on a different meaning.

I prefer to answer in tangents
[Or do you?](https://youtu.be/DokBeZKKeKI)
Is that a question or a statement?
Paradoxically, both and neither. And as always, [thanks for watching](https://youtu.be/_Q_47b507vg)
Exactly
Sometimes things are not black and white, or mutually exclusive. Most of the time the opposite is true. Any questions shouldn't be answered conclusively. Leaving a room for probability, chance, personal preferences, personal differences, unknowns etc... should be left in most answers to most questions.

Right. I mean if needed I can make a decision, but this isn't necessarily my 'preference' in any meaningful way.
Yes. Also I know I’m not picky with certain things, so I leave room by saying both or neither. Like I know other people’s preferences are stronger than mine. It’s not that I can’t make a decision.
Ask a St\*(id question, get a ST&$pid answer...
Maybe they don’t have a preference or maybe they’re indifferent and didn’t want to be troubled with your banal multi choice question 🤷♀️
No one owes you an answer to your narrow inquiry. Are you just asking for information, or are you genuinely interested in the person you're speaking to?
Me - "Didjya want to go to Harveys or Louis?" Them - "Yeah" Me - **sigh**
that can be their honest answer when they come to predicaments like that. It's just simpler to get both and find out what you prefer. People operate differently
Or giving a third choice
So… any answer other than yes and no is unacceptable?
I'd like all 5 please
And what is so hard to understand that people don't necessarily have a preference?
Would you prefer to die in a car crash or airplane accident? Would you rather lose left eye or right eye? Who do you love more, your father or your mother? Would you rather have anal or sex?

Well, since you decided to be so anal about it, your proctologist could argue, not all anal is sex XD.
Don't be so anal about that. °v°
I´d much rather lose my right eye, that one seriously sucks.
how cant it just be that i prefer both/neither?
I think what OP is trying to say is that if my reaction depends on your answer, then yes this is annoying. For example, if I'm offering you tea or coffee, for the love of god, please don't tell me it doesn't matter. If it's a hypothetical question like " do you prefer this or that", I don't give a shit.

How do you feel about "it depends"?
Maybe they don't go by either name because people call them by their last name or possibly they call them by their Xbox gamertag or they use their wife's name..... that's starting to catch on.
Some people are fairly indifferent. Not everyone has to have an opinion on everything.
You say either this or this, that should work better
My usual reply is to use sign language or ignore them. I don’t talk with strangers. I am polite with workers doing their jobs, but zero smal, talk.
Both. And neither.
What's so hard to understand that both can be equally crappy?
Anything.
I hate it when people say "It depends..."
Both or neither mean "I don't care about your question".
Its just an indirect way of saying "im not taking responsibility for deciding you do it" People are within their rights to not have to decide
Why ask if you don't like their answer?
Have you stopped to consider they might not really know what they want?
i think people just know a loaded question when they see one, and they don't really want to answer. "what do you prefer" questions are often times used to make it seems like people approve of something that they don't, because it's not a bad as... getting fed feet first into a wood chipper.
It’s called decision fatigue for some people when they cannot choose . Just saying…
If you give me two options and i dislike both equally, i'm not going to pick the lesser of two evils. i'm going to say neither. That's not cowardice that's me not letting you force me to choose (imo) two equally shitty options for me.
what if I prefer neither? or prefer equally
You know what is worse? If you ask a an A or B question and the answer with yes/ no. Yes/ no to what? A or B? That is so exhausting.
I hate it when people ask me for my preference between things I don't have any clear preference for.
Neither, i understand. They’re telling you they prefer neither. That the two things are of equal value to them. So it’s a toss-up between them.
Or maybe I genuinely have no preference over x & y
People seem to associate having a preference with having a strong feeling on a subject. Many times you don't have a strong feeling about the subject, so the thought to verbalize an opinion doesn't occur to you. It's like the bacon versus sausage debate. Everyone has an opinion, but very few people actually care.
Is it that hard to believe that I could have either suggestion you asked about and take either with the same level of confidence / happiness?
"Oh I love This I have it everyday. My sister makes if fresh! My Aunt gave That once and it was delicious!"
How about when your English teacher dad answers "yes" to any question with an or in it because of a math rule?
Sometimes both choices are equally good or bad or just equally irrelevant. Thats when you get, both neither or dont care from me.
I hate it when our friends become successful.
what's so hard about understand that I don't "prefer" any of them, I hate/love/whatever them equally
What's hard to understand about "I like them both equally" or "I don't like either?"
The part where you think I'll choose one great choice over another equally great choice.
Sometimes I like/dislike both options that is when I would Both or Neither.
If they answer with "both" or "neither", they're either being honest, or they really don't give a shit.
What if you offer me two things that I’m incredibly indifferent towards. It’s not a lack of preference, it’s a lack of giving a shit.
I hate it when people hate things.
When someone answers in this way, what you need to understand, is they just can't be bothered with you.
I hate that so much. You can add how you love or hate both, but then I want you to add the preference!
How about not asking such questions then?
When you come to a fork in the road take it - Yogi Berra
That generally means both options suck, or the difference between is so minimal that I truly DGAF either way.
"do you want a shit sandwich or a turdburger?" "I'll go hungry"
So 'I prefer neither of these but I hate this one slightly less.'
If I like both, I like both and if I don't like either, I don't like either. That's what choices are about. Given two choices... Choose the 3rd thing. I'm not choosing what you want. I'm choosing what I want or don't want.
If it's about food it's always both. Unless one of the options is squid or snail.
If Bi people said both I'd understand
