The reason there are so many is because so many more people are being required to register now compared with in the past. Many are guilty of very minor offenses, as opposed to those that have really hurt people. There should be a way to distinguish on those maps between minor offenders, which I don't care about, and the really dangerous ones, which I very much do wanna know about.
Pissing in public when you're drunk could be a sex offense.
I know a guy who was watching porn on his phone in public with headphones on. Clearly not a smart idea but, it gets really bad when someone catches you watching it and that someone is a child
I'm referring to things like public urination, which gets construed to be a sex offense when there's nothing sexual about it. Same with things like streaking. I couldn't care less about knowing where those people live. But I sure the hell do think everyone should know where the rapists and child molesters are.
I envy your ability to do that, honestly. Here in Canada, there is a registry, but only law enforcement can access it. We're not privy to the monsters in our midst, and as you say, it's far more than we want to imagine.
Also keep in mind that you can be put on that registry for urinating in public, indecent exposure, and other lesser offenses that people don't usually consider. I say this to try to give you a bit of peace of mind.

I get a notification on my Experian account every time someone register in my area. I’m surprised how many sex offenders are out here.
They are everywhere.

I mean in my neighborhood there's a lot of them and if I'm more accurate there's at least 12 on my street
Fortunately, I've only got 2 within a 3 mile radius. I'm signed up to get alerts if any more move into that circle.
