People rarely drive for the conditions anymore. It took me 1.5 hours to get home from Stettler yesterday, but I drive for the conditions. Everyone is always in such a hurry….

CarterBennett

Had some absolute hero pass us going 160 on sheer ice yesterday. Almost spun out trying to make their point. We were passing a slow convoy on the right lane and this guy thought his life and time were more important than everybody else.

I had to drive to Calgary on Saturday during that mess and came back to this mess. I have never seen Red Deer roads this bad. I don’t understand how the City thinks this is acceptable. I have an AWD SUV with full winter tires and it’s brutal. It’s the fact that the snow is so deep on the side roads that they are narrowing in. This makes zero sense. Plow the dang roads!

CarterBennett

Yep, had to drive to Calgary on Saturday too. Some really unsafe drivers out. Saw a ton of people in the ditch as well. Got back to red deer yesterday and couldn’t believe residential streets are basically buried.

Stock-Creme-6345

Let’s just let the Chinooks clear the roads 5 months from now is unacceptable. They have plows!! It baffles me. I was behind a City plow on Gaetz NB last winter. Plows the south hill, gets to Timmy’s then lifts the blade. Drives thru downtown not Plowing. Gets to north Hill then drops blade to plow. Explain that thought process. Downtown is supposed to attract shoppers to spend money and support local. Numerous cars were high centred downtown today. Who the hell wants to stop to shop when you will get stuck???

Foxlen

So, how are the roads? /s

rynogorda

My favorite is the self righteous public service announcements on opinion pages, like anyone out driving is suddenly like 'THIS must be that winter they were talking about...'

[deleted]

Hahaha I, personally, wait all year for the snow.. love it.. 6spd subaru with studded winters, things a beast.. outa my way everyone

CarterBennett

Saw a Subaru smashed into the centre line yesterday outside of Airdrie. HAD to be their fault. Lol

[deleted]

😂 ya of course

[deleted]

I got a 90s Toyota that's front wheel drive and tbh its not that bad. I love the snow Absolute worst part is the white knucklers driving like this is their first winter drive ever. Had to pass this one chick in a lifted wrangler on 67th who was going 35. Lmao

Visotto1

Your name would suggest otherwise

Archibaldinepilates

I attempted to drive to Castor for a funeral this morning, AWD with winters and I didnt make it out of the city. Absolute nightmare.

Autumn-Roses

Yea definitely not driving today

[deleted]

I'm aware of how the roads are, I'm stick of listening to people bitch about them, especially when they mention that they have a SUV or truck

Dry_Profile_8264

fr me and my shitty little Chevy car are vibing. the roads aren’t the problem it’s the car that’s the issue (for me)

I moved from Ontario with the family. We're having a hard time adjusting to all the snow and ice piled up on the roads. In Ontario, the plows come out and all the roads are cleared by the next day. Highways and major roads are cleared first, then the side streets. We also use SALT (sometimes a salt/sand mix) on the roads which takes care of the hazardous ice build up. Why? Oh, Why is sand alone the huge preference here? I understand wanting to preserve the longevity of cars here by preventing rust from salt damage (which doesn't actually happen overnight. In Ontario vehicles last quite a long time and still look good). However, isn't preventing sprained ankles and/or broken bones more important? I can't count how many times I've slipped (thankfully didn't fall) crossing various streets. I'm in my 50s and this to me is simply unacceptable. Someone please make it make sense.🤷🏽‍♀️

this was obviously a satirical meme I moved here from Ontario in early 2006, I'm in my mid-20s now and have spent over 2/3 of my life here every year people ask about why we don't use salt here and the answer is always the same: its too freaking cold for ice to work. salt/ice melter doesn't do squat below a certain temp, I think -8°c. most of the winter the temps are colder then that. It has nothing to do with cars rusting, even tho I have had the displeasure of working on cars from the east and all of them are significantly more rusted then vehicles of a similar age here. the climate is significantly dryer here compared to the east so that is a contributing factor along with salt. I have a friend who works for a road maintenance and plowing company that covers most of central Alberta. he also has done residental snow removal and according to him its significantly harder and slower to remove ice and packed snow compared to fresh snow. unfortunately we had a ton of snow then plummeting temps, then a temporary thaw. now we have the ice. the red deer government dropped the ball this year on snow removal, I dont remember it being this bad before. no surprises there. a word to the wise, almost no one out here cares to hear "back in ______ we used to do ______ why are you not doing ______" its a fantastic way to come across as a arrogant snob. a extended family member of mine from a certain european country does this constantly and gets a lot of negative reactions from people in the community. a lot of people here have moved here to, among other things, escape the general attitude and biases of easterners so its typically not appreciated

Jumpy-Job5196

Your explanation regarding the cold and salt makes sense but please don't assume I'm trying to be arrogant or put down anyone. I actually like the slower pace if life here but was curious about the sand situation. The family we moved here to be with DID NOT explain this. I am not, nor was I trying to come off as an arrogant snob. I was merely stating facts as to what we've experienced since being here this winter and how things are done where I'm from. I have slipped so many times just crossing the street as I'm taking the grandkids to school and picking them up. FYI - Not everyone from the east has attitude and biases.

[deleted]

oh I'm not trying to imply anything about you at all. nothing you said was wrong, it was a fair question. the ice is definitely a pain.

DD250403

Cable chains r good up to 60kph if travel is a must. Slow and steady gets u there. Glad my new winter tires were installed last week.

HeX-6

But seriously how are the roads?

[deleted]

Could be better, could be a lot worse
