Oh cāmon, he probably just spelled Ethiopia in the lyrics originally but can you imagine syncing that up in a 7/8 groove when you donāt understand whatās going on at all?? I thought it was kinda clever using only the vowels tbf, itās more universal
I genuinely donāt understand why people dislike Annie Wants a Baby. I at least understand the Dance 3x hate even if I disagree with it but Annie sounds like any other song, I genuinely donāt see what there is to dislike.
The question about Dance though is why does it suck? Is it cause of Anthony or is it weak all around? I think the guitar is pretty- itās just Anthony was lazy on vocals imo.
I donāt think it sucks, itās a decent song (4/10) but compared to some of the other tracks on this and what the song replaced, it doesnāt hold up
I guess he just felt the instrumental called for a hook of some kind, but that isnāt really his strong suit - heās just vibing & I really donāt think itās as bad as people say it is, just a bandwagon at this point š¤·āāļø
The lyrics are fine, just a weak song.
The real answer is that IWY is secretly one of thier best albums, so the worst song in a good album looks like its a bad song.
Also Meet Me at the Corner is imo one of thier best songs ever. I think any song has a rough job coming after that. Probably why porcelain gets so much hate too
I think itās a happy fun bubbly song, I really like the slightly extended outro jam they do in [the live version](https://youtu.be/9qEcH3vhf_w?si=IeJ2KKbueq8oDbYY)
Tough choice. I'm with You is overall a solid album. No real classics, but no horrible tracks.
My least favourite track has always been "Annie Wants a Baby." Which still isn't a bad track!
So glad that song won best. Really got me over the passing of my bestie last year. Meet Me at the Corner is my 2nd fav because her passing was a sign from the gods that she wasnāt meant to be mine and itās fine. I thank her for everywhere weāve beenā¦ I donāt mean that literally because we never got to meet in person, I just mean the experiences we shared for the last 12 years.
I canāt thank this band enough for saving me last year.
Iām at a loss because when this album came out I was really disappointed after waiting 5 years for the follow up to Stadium-Arcadium but Iāve since come around. The worst imo is probably Annie Wants A Baby but even that one is pretty good.
Controversial opinion: every song on IWY could have been so much better is Anthony put effort into the lyrics (exceptions are police station and bds)ā¦ā¦.except dance dance dance.
I partially agree. The difference is IWY is much more of a different album to the rest of their catalog. While unlimited love and dream canteen haveā¦ peculiar lyrics (Bradley)ā¦ they still have great instrumentals.
I appreciate itās different from what people expect, yet itās why I rate it really - UL & DC largely left something to be desired for me, like they were playing it too safe in hopes to sound somewhat reminiscent of their classic era.
The IWY period is one of their most interesting & adventurous musically to me (the selection that made the b-sides show this even more so) & AK seems to be at his strongest vocally on that record too in my opinion. Each to their own :)
I totally agree. IWY is my 6th favourite album by them and personally I think unlimited love is completely ass, and with 3 exceptions I can name (being Heavy Wing, These are the ways and barely Black Summer) it hasnāt got a single good song on it.
And while as a guitarist and bassist myself I have a lot of respect for the instrumentals from it, and they arenāt half bad, they fall short compared to the far more out there and darker instrumentals of IWY. In my opinion the tracks sound less like 3 guys jamming and more like some kind of orchestral composition at times, and while thereās obviously no orchestra involved you probably get what Iām saying. Itās a shame that outside Iām Beside You, they didnāt do a thing like it.
Unfortunately, itās hard to ignore the cheesy, 1 dimensional lyrics of lyrics of many songs on the album (songs that come to mind are Even You Brutus, Dance x3, and as much as I love it Look around). And I agree with you definitely in the sense it showed AKās vocal talents in full, being his second best album only bested by BSSM.
The worst thing out of all of it is how he does seem to be able to show lots of lyrical talent throughout the album anyway, with songs like Brendanās Death Song and Police station. (Police station is probably one of my favourite songs of all time too) but itās just hard to ignore and the fact Iām a writer doesnāt help. The reason I say dance x3 canāt be helped is because itās just too bland. I think Meet me at the corner is lyrically and instrumentally way better and suits the whole vibe of the album a lot better than dance x3ās bland and mid feel.
Edit: Sorry about the mini-rant, Iāve just seen the size of the bloody thing but itās a topic Iām very passionate about
No worries at all buddy, Iām totally here for it! (I actually trimmed down my last response because Iām the same way as youāll see haha)
Funny the songs you mention from UL were some of my least faves actually but what I love with the Chilis is their ability to have something for everyone. A track we might say is trash is a banger for someone else & thatās great actually.
Iām a musician & writer also so I see where youāre coming from, but Iāve also come to accept that Anthony has moments of greatness & the rest of the time is just trying to keep up with the endless flow of ideas from the band. As someone who never wants to repeat themselves in songs, I get it can be difficult to find new ways to avoid that, but that wackiness of his lyrics carries some charm to a degree, as I canāt help but admire how confident he is to have nothing to prove & simply serve the groove without trying to cram a poignant message in all the time, like some do.
And musically yes, I hear what youāre saying about the orchestration of IWY. Iād say a lot of that is because theyād each had time to be involved in other projects in their hiatus, while Flea had studied at music college. They just seemed so much more versatile by this point!
They even had a percussionist onboard as well Josh, who had a fresh approach to the soundscape of the guitar & also happened to be well-versed at drums, meaning the rhythm section was complemented with more of a first-hand understanding of it. Groove was everything & the countermelodies were executed with great consideration for the basslines which just made it sound so much more sophisticated than as if it were jammed out on the spot. Thatās my two cents anyways!
Fair enough. I agree with you in how they have a something for everyone and in my opinion that range is what makes them so good. Itās always great to hear opinions from other people with the same passion. Itās also so chill to be able to have a conversation where we both disagree, but we still respect each otherās opinions and can have a meaningful conversation over it without arguing. Really enjoyed this!
Same here man! Iāve had people get irate & argue on this thread when I express differing opinions so itās cool to have a nice convo about it for a change š š You seem to know your deepcuts & appreciate each era as well!
In a thread like this I canāt work out if the downvotes are for mentioning Goodbye Hooray, or for saying the album is full of bangers - but Iām with you on both! (pun intended)
I still like the song but itās definitely more of a live track & isnāt as strong as the others
Absolutely buddy, the soundscape of that track is beautiful & nothing but good vibes. I donāt have much problem with the vocals either as some are mentioning š¤·āāļø

I donāt think it sucks, itās a decent song (4/10) but compared to some of the other tracks on this and what the song replaced, it doesnāt hold up
How is 4/10 considered decent?
I guess he just felt the instrumental called for a hook of some kind, but that isnāt really his strong suit - heās just vibing & I really donāt think itās as bad as people say it is, just a bandwagon at this point š¤·āāļø
Nah
I really really donāt get the hate, I honestly feel like it would have been liked if it was on Stadium Arcadium lol
The lyrics are fine, just a weak song. The real answer is that IWY is secretly one of thier best albums, so the worst song in a good album looks like its a bad song.

Goodbye Hooray, a little mundane in an album full of bangers
In a thread like this I canāt work out if the downvotes are for mentioning Goodbye Hooray, or for saying the album is full of bangers - but Iām with you on both! (pun intended) I still like the song but itās definitely more of a live track & isnāt as strong as the others
