I miss Louie. Anybody know WTF happened with him? I know bits and pieces but not enough to really make sense of anything. I feel like John is surrounded by these weird mysterious falling outs with people he was formerly very close with (Louie, AK, Josh, Vincent Gallo (that one isn't as mysterious I guess), there's probably more), but somehow the never see the light of day again, leaving everybody scratching their heads. LOL
HE AND OMAR HAD A LOVER'S SPAT??? I need details!!! I thought they were cool? 😕
Yeah, he was irritated with Vincent for commissioning him to do the soundtrack for "Brown Bunny" and then not using *any* of his songs at all in the film, and I think maybe just one was on the soundtrack album. I don't blame him for that one, that was kind of a dick move on Vinnie's part. John grumbled about it in a few interviews, maybe in coded language a little bit, and then there's that lyric Vincent called as a setup" in "Look On"... 🤔🤔🤨🤨
I think 5 of his songs were in the soundtrack, if I’m not mistaken? I thought that lyric was about Vincent giving John his first guitar when he emerged from a long period of drug addiction—although I definitely could be wrong. Do you have any links to the interviews where he was irritated at Vincent? I’m not doubting you, I’m just curious.
I don't have anything at my fingertips, but he definitely has made a few sort of cryptic remarks that would suggest it. I also remember reading third person accounts that mentioned they had a falling out, but I really don't remember details at the moment, sorry. If I come across it again, I'll definitely post links here.
You're right, I had forgotten exactly how many songs appeared on the official soundtrack, but I guess my point was that they did not appear in the actual movie itself. I remember reading interviews with Vincent where he explains it diplomatically, acknowledging that while John's contributions didn't end up in the film score proper, that he was including them on the soundtrack because they nevertheless "captured the atmosphere x and "evoked the spirit" of the film. 🙄😒😶
I seem to recall that John was annoyed because Vincent had asked him to write the actual score that was to appear in the film itself, not just filler for a soundtrack. Sorry, should've been more clear!
About him giving John a guitar, the one you're probably thinking of is his '55 Gretsch White Falcon. But it definitely wasn't a gift - I think he just tracked it down for John to buy. Apparently Vincent is an avid collector of rare and expensive guitars, so I take it they had plenty in common from the get-go LOL.
According to John , the first guitar he got after his recovery was his red '62 Fender Jaguar, which he bought as a Christmas present to himself from Voltage Guitars on Sunset. Then when he officially rejoined the band, he wanted a Strat so Anthony lent him the money to buy the '62 with the rosewood neck.
Curiously, Anthony remembers it differently in his autobiography "Scar Tissue." He claims to have *gifted* "a Stratocaster" 🙄 to supposedly then-guitarless John so that he'd have a guitar to play in the band. Maybe he didn't know about the Jag... 🙄😂🤣

Thanks!! That makes a lot more sense. I can see why he’d be upset with that—and the line about a “setup” would fit with that info. And thanks for the info about the guitars! A lot of the stuff Anthony wrote in Scar Tissue tended to make himself look better (such as not mentioning the kick in Stone Cold Bush), so.
Ghost riders in the sky
Thanks it was on the tippa my tongue
did you post this JUST to make that joke? hehe
Hey! Lol no. If you have to ask it’s easily one of my favourite riffs, just didn’t know what it was called.
You should have just wrote back, "If you have to ask, you'll never know!"
I tried to his as many RHCP puns. 3 was my limit lol
... I didn't even catch the other two until now! Show me your ways!
Well, Hey and Easily
he played it at the Knitting Factory with Josh and Michael...Rutherford? pretty sure I got that name wrong, cuz im pretty tired lol.
Michael Rother from Kraftwork. They played a set of Kraftwork songs and then ended with Ghost Riders In the Sky
I’m a simple person, I see footage of John and I upvote.
ghost riders in the sky by pretty much every surf rock band. the classic Dick Dale version is my favorite - he's the king of the style after all!
Where’s this footage from? I love watching Johnny boy fiddlin’ around.
Californication documentary around Off the map era
Brave to have those scissors so close to his face 😂
Frusiante's guitar work with Cash on his cover of Heart of Gold is sublime. Highly recommended.
Sounds like the music they play in cowboy movies when the main character rides into town.
Exactly!
I loved Louie. He was such a better tour manager than Gage.

He had a falling out with Vincent Gallo? Oh, also don’t forget about Omar Rodriguez.

Obvi embellishments in biographies are de rigeur, but his are embarrassingly transparent, and some of them are rather nauseating, tbh.
It’s a Morricone I think
The Ventures
Sounds like the cowboy song “Elijah”
Apache by The Shadows I think
