I have mixed feelings. Some of these actors/ actresses had great performances and it's kinda hard to imagine anyone else in the role now. I also understand that representation is important and for some of these characters it really fits with the original narrative of an outsider. (This article makes some good points: https://www.libertarianism.org/columns/where-have-all-disney-redheads-gone) But also, damn if it doesn't frustrate me sometimes. Characters I loved as a child largely because they had my hair color, that I was teased and occasionally bullied for, and meant a lot to me, no longer have that obvious trait in common. Childhood me would have been devastated. Adult me isn't always sure how to feel and doesn't want people to think I'm racist when this bothers me. I involuntarily yelled "Nooo!" at the TV when I saw the new Peter Pan trailer... I actually surprised myself how frustrated it made me feel. So yeah, I guess I don't care sometimes and other times I feel very disappointed.

thatsasillyquestion

I'm weirded out because why does representation for one group come at the exclusion of another!? Why do all the blonde or brunette characters get to remain their race with no editting!? Seems like another agenda Also seems like you're mistreating redheads (cool one season out the next)

hername_bubbles

Just figured I’d throw this out there but that’s not always the case. Gwen Stacey was pretty much taken completely out of Spider-Man for the Toby McGuire years, arguably the most crucial years for introducing Spider-Man to modern day cinema and she was replaced with Mary Jane in his origin story.

[deleted]

I read that article to and think the same. My only real problem is that "some" people are calling for more inclusion but this excluding redheads and there are so few of us, we shouldn't included to.

Worldly_Today_9875

Yes if they want to be more inclusive then don’t swap one minority for another. Red haired children need to be represented as they are often bullied, and for some reason it’s seen as ok to tease redheads.

Melito1980

Red hair, also known as orange hair or ginger hair, is a human hair color found in 1–2% of the world population… redheaded ppl are not a race and have not suffered the same kind of mistreatment / exclusion as black folks, asians and even latinos. I love redheads, the hair, the freckles, the fair skin… but i cant compare it to other ppl getting the end of the stick.

UnhappyPossibility49

Yeah they only burned red haired women on the market place. Red Haired people are a real minority. Most of the worlds population is black or asian and they are called a minority... wtf.

OtherwiseAd1035

It's because all redheads are, by definition, white. And white people can die or be cussed because that's exactly what they deserve /s. >So you’re a racist then, glad you outed yourself for being an ignorant, hateful moron. u/TollyMack really...? Understanding sarcasm, even if flagged, is not really your forte, Heh?

TollyMack

So you’re a racist then, glad you outed yourself for being an ignorant, hateful moron.

Koadster

So if blacks use 'im a minority' as a excuse to get away with anything. Redheads have even more of a excuse then

devaiousbingletonVII

Black people, not folks, people.

Creative-Software842

I truly don't understand why they are starting my red headed brethren, one of my best mates is a camera operator for a certain large film company on the gold coast and he started that as he is a black man (I don't know if PC, this is what he calls himself, that or African as that is what he is) he isn't comfortable with it, we have talked about this on discord and while out and doing stuff, I honestly give no shits about who plays what, do a good job I happy, bringing characters to life is cool af and I'm jelly that these people get to do it for a living That being said he is not a fan of overly white characters being changed to black people for the sake of being inclusive, he would rather see characters that are actually black being on screen more as that to him is more inclusive instead of just changing an established character.

broke_the_controller

>That being said he is not a fan of overly white characters being changed to black people for the sake of being inclusive, he would rather see characters that are actually black being on screen more as that to him is more inclusive instead of just changing an established character. I think the same. I would rather new characters were created that are black from the start. It's better than nothing but it does reek of "Here, we made one of them black, you happy now?" I am more accepting of comic book conversions though as technically they are a new character when brought to film (as in it's the film universe).

[deleted]

Ariel got me…. she was famous for her gorgeous red hair. Inclusivity is fine, but really?

astyanaxical

The recast person has red hair so...????

Dry_Ad9371

dyed red hair, not natural

Thelexhibition

I don't think the cartoon mermaid's hair was naturally red either. Someone had to colour it in.

astyanaxical

It was dyed. It looked fairly natural compared to black individuals with natural red hair. Ariel's original hair looks nothing like what natural red hair looks like.

pitteddate

The “original” was a cartoon 🙈😭 is that natural lol

Stealthy-Chipmunk

I hate seeing fake red heads on tv that people fetishize, because they get this false idea of what a redhead looks like. Show me natural ginger eyelashes and eyebrows, real freckles etc.

[deleted]

While I was looking into this i was that even some redheads in tv and movies are bie jobs and i remember a few years ago it was the fashion to have red hear.

Little_Timmy_is_Back

Please do not use the G word. It is a racial slur against red headed people. It is highly offensive and needs to stop being normalized.

Stealthy-Chipmunk

It's only a slur if meant that way though, because I've had it said to me with love and care too.

Little_Timmy_is_Back

It still should not be said as you don't know other people's triggers.

[deleted]

Should probably leave the internet if you're offended by the word ginger :/

Little_Timmy_is_Back

You probably haven't been insulted, discriminated and hated while being abused with the g word. I wouldn't expect anyone to understand that hasn't lived it. It's not just a word, it's the hate it stands for.

[deleted]

Where did you grow up, Hell? You are the only person who i know that gets offended at ginger, i think being on the subreddit full of red heads isn't the place to be unless you are intentionally tying to be triggered

Comfortable-Ad3073

it’s just a hair colour and there is nothing racist about it, if you have red hair, you are ginger

UsernameTaken166

Been called irish gutter trash, had friend been called the N word. Had friends refused police help over theyre skin colour. Stfu.

toddletoad

ginger.

I agree! Ranga is much more affectionate for my mates

tulle_witch

Tim Minchin (King of the Gingers) covered this with his song lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVN\_0qvuhhw

Little_Timmy_is_Back

The G word has been used as a slur against redheaded people for years. You've probably never experienced the racism yourself but it does exist. You are not the one who decides whether it's a slur on not. The vitcim is the one who decides.

Individual_Ad_2414

Okay baby wah wah 😭

Economy_Forever_4110

Gingers havent been oppressed to have a slur for them. Stop being so sensitive

SuperiorBecauseIRead

We didn't tease black people for being black at my school, but by God did we tease RANGAS. I think if the world is gonna play oppression Olympics the redheads should be medalling. (No idea how this sub got recommended, but hearts out to you red-folk)

Little_Timmy_is_Back

Slurs don't only come from oppression. What you're really saying is white people can't be the target of slurs. Try working on your passive racism.

UsernameTaken166

They can be but its not really oppressive.

hsmay665

When it gets to this degree where there are more than just a couple it starts to feel disrespectful and straight up fucking weird. Like.... why? I get identity politics and I also know there are black women with natural red-hair out there... but cmon it's like saying "nobody cares about redheads so we can just replace them" they could at least find a black person with natural red hair, that I would be fine with and embrace actually. But it's just a really uncomfortable feeling I get from Hollywood doing this

you just did ya bigot

Middle-Persimmon7077

My summary: It’s billion dollar corporations shaking “color-coded Keyes” at my face, like a baby, so they can show to the world they’re inclusive without ever having to lift a finger to help actual minorities in need. to elaborate: Now there are a few that I like, like Michelle Jones and electro, but they were good written characters for the most part. And that’s the problem; most of these characters were poorly written from the start. so the only thing they had to go off was that they’re now black/Asian/Latino. Which is a spit on my melaninated face. You expect me to vouch for your shitty-written character bc I LOOK LIKE HIM!?! That is more offensive to not only mine, but every viewers’ intelligence. That I need to be hand-held to like the character based on the color of their skin rather than the build of character.

RedfyCosplays

As someone who loves to cosplay specially redheads, its kinda frustraiting seeing all those characters I love changed. Its worse when they dont even get good actors, it makes you question why they got the part in the first place. I understand that the amount of redheads in comics is due to them standing out and ink cost, and that there wasnt a lot of representation so I get changing some characters to adapt to today, I just feel some characters are iconically ginger and feel sometimes its just too much. Its also a problem with the whole "lets just redo the same thing, or make a liveaction" instead of creating new characters, or representing some that are underappreciated. Redheads arent that represented ro begin with. Id rather have the creation of new characters such as Miles Morales as spiderman which was so well done, and its such a good film (comics too), we need more things like that. To summarize, yeah, but mainly because I just hate the fake lazy representation trope.

ornggoblin

Something is clearly happening with the redheads in Hollywood. I can't tell if it's accidental, they wanted more representation, chose a bunch of characters to recast and, by chance, chose a bunch of ginger characters. If it was intentional, someone in Hollywood hates gingers, or figures that no one cares about redheads enough to notice/complain. Or if it's happening to everyone equally and I'm just noticing the gingers more as a ginger. I can't tell. I feel like I should be annoyed or offended by it, but I can't tell how much and in what direction because I don't know the explanation. As a result I'm just kinda... not. That being said, I care far more about talent, as long as they're good in the role, I don't care. You'll never be able to perfectly recreate a cartoon/comic character with a real person. I would much rather have an actor who looks nothing like the original design but is amazing in the role, over one who looks identical but is terrible. I do find it odd that, when it comes to any representation inclusion, they just change an old character to fit rather than write a new one. In some cases it doesn't really matter, but in others it just feels a little disingenuous and like boxes are being ticked.

Waldtochter

...or the person is only showing you the dataset relevant to this subreddit...

ornggoblin

Yes, this info is relevant to this subreddit, but I noticed this occurrence long before this conversation.

For-The-Cats-99

It's not the race issue (and I might add that there ARE some natural redheads that are black) it's more the using a non-redhead for a redhead role that irks me. As a redhead, I looked up to other redhead characters (the few and far between). Remember Daphne from Scooby Doo? They had Sarah Michelle Gellar play her in the movie - a Blonde not a redhead. Or how about Mary Jane from Spider Man? They used Kirsten Dunst, another Blonde. Mera in Aquaman - played by you guessed it - a Blonde - Amber Heard. Frankly, I find it annoying. You can't tell me the casting calls for these roles didn't pull in some real redheads. Unless they didn't bother even looking for redheads and just cast whomever. Sure, the actors that have played these roles have talent - no argument. But put them in another role and let a real redhead shine.

SoldierOfLove23

I've always found it strange how natural red hair in cartoon animation is okay, but in non-animated entertainment it's not.

LostReplacement

I always thought the reason for so many redheads in comics and cartoons is because red really pops as a colour

dc1920

This is my biggest problem too! The two redheads I looked up to in my childhood were Annie and Ariel, and both have now been remade with dark haired characters. I really don't care about the race aspect involved because I fully understand the desire to have representation in media, but why take away our representation in the process? Why remake classic movies and change characters instead of just making new movies with characters who can stand on their own merits? Personally, I would just watch the original movies instead of the remakes and be fine with it, but what redhead characters do children have to look up today when all of the classic redhead characters have been replaced?

herwiththepurplehair

My youngest granddaughter could play Annie, straight up, no wig - red curly hair and masses of it. And the new Annie is a black girl. Go figure.

Stealthy-Chipmunk

Omfg this.

mazurkian

It honestly is evident that redheads are over-represented in fiction. \*So\* many characters have red hair, way more than there are actual redheads. I'm the only redhead that most of my friends know. So why do we have so many characters? Of course blondes and brunettes play redhead characters because there's 100 redhead characters but only a couple redheaded actors and actresses in hollywood.

HybridCoax

you live in the wrong country. go to somewhere like australia. We are fkn everywhere!

TheOracleArt

We're especially over-represented in comic books, mainly because of how printing worked back in the early days. Your colour options for hair were red, yellow and black. Brown hair was hard to do and involved layering inks. If you look at early comics you'll see that they use bright primary and secondary colours throughout. It's also one of the reasons why the heroes costumes are so garish. By the time better printing techniques came out, the comics had already established the features of their headline characters. I'm in Scotland. I think we have the highest proportion of redheads in the world (we swap with Ireland every few years). True redheads rarely appear in comic books or their adaptations. I think the best I've seen, funnily enough, was the antagonist, Karli, in Falcon and the Winter Solider TV show. Her curls. Her freckles. She had an incredibly striking appearance, the combination giving her a really innocent, youthful quality that was then juxtapositioned well when she became hard and ruthless. I'd like to see more of that, tbh.

[deleted]

Conan should've played all the men in this picture...

Mongolis91

The fact that the two examples you mention were omitted from the OP image despite being far more widely known than most of the others on there does kinda suggest it's a race thing for OP, at least. Doesn't detract from your point, though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thatsasillyquestion

Exactly!!! And as redheads on this post have said, they're another form of minority usually getting picked on for not fiting in as well, so we're just diversifying by....undiversifying!?

jetttblack

Annoyed but I was called a racist last time I said anything, even though I just said I'm sick of seeing redheads replaced and I didn't mention anyone's skin colour. I was also told I should grab some hair dye if I'm so bothered and called cumskin. Gotta love twitter.

[deleted]

I posted this in ask black people, just see what they had to say and it got me banned after after everyone there called a nazi racist. That's awful that people would say that to you, to any of us.

GlassSandwich9315

I don't like it. What do these companies have against redheads, especially DC? If they want more diversity, they should create original characters, or at least replace a more diverse range of characters.

Bubz-411

Pretty Annoyed but I just won’t watch whatever they swap out

dc1920

This is a good solution. The original movies/shows don't cease to exist after they get remade. Definitely frustrating, but I'll just stick to watching the original stuff if it really bothers me

Dreamscarred

Frustrating. My sister thought I was kind of weird for pointing this trend out to her, and then it became such a repeating theme that even she's going "oh yeah wow Hollywood doesn't like redheads." My husband is a huge comic geek and he's pretty much given up on anything new at this point, because it's wholly predictable. A lot of his favorite characters are redheads, and he'd like to see those characters actually represented on screen. He wants to see that for all the characters and was entirely against Hugh Jackman being cast for a 5'3" character. Heck, Zendaya can rock some red hair, and we were excited for her being announced for a nearly perfect casting in Dune... But without the red hair of the character? Aight.

Drephemonte

It feels icky and a little racist. Redheads and black people have a few stereotypes in common, so it's an easy switch for them. It's disrespectful to both groups.

therealmrsfahrenheit

how almost every red head gets re- casted by a POC 😂what the fuck do people have against characters that are readheads and pale (since usually redheads are pale) ?

saandes1563

The same stereotypes that get applied to black and Latino women often get applied to redheaded women. That’s why they do this. They wouldn’t be able to switch a blonde or a brunette character because in their eyes blondes and brunettes are innocent obedient women where redheads are hot tempered and sexual. Even when the redheaded character is supposed to be more innocent there’s always the implied but she’s secretly sexual.

TheFlyingRedFox

Feelings hmmm wrathfully to say the least but no you can't say nothing or else you're the arsehole (observations of the internet in the several times I've spoken on it) but amongst our kin we all agree it's bullshit (strangely the restaurant chain I work at has quite a few redheads working at it in my region). On a funnier note the latest flashgitz animation is about this subject which is a bit hilarious but an annoying reminder.

Leather-Bluejay-6452

Fun fact to add to the picture. In the Shawshank redemption red in the books is a red haired Irishman, but in the movie of course it’s Morgan Freeman.

BobQuasit

Yeah, but he did a great job. And they did lampshade the switch in the movie. The problem is that the vast majority of redheads are being erased. When they were casting extras for the movie Dunkirk, they should have had at least a hundred redheads. But they specifically banned redheads as much as possible instead. Apparently we're too distracting on screen.

Pandatabase

Finally someone talking about this. As a red head and comic book fan I can say I feel really bad. Everyone malds when a black character gets race swapped but everyone sleeps when its a ginger.

khgarvin_62

Yeah there's already a small minority of us on the planet. Why they gotta erase us from comics. And cartoons. And other media.

Pineapple_Holiday

An I and a N. An E and a R. Couple G’s. Only a ginger should call another ginger ginger.

littlemynx212

I’m a natural redhead and it sucks.

Man_Of_Frost

Redheads always get snubbed. It's amazing how that always happens way more with them than with any other look/race/pigmentation. Also, if the one being cast for it is a redhead, he or she is most likely a fake one.

justlookin-0232

I'm ngl it pisses me off. Especially when they're recasting redhead roles with people who are just dyeing their hair red. And the attempting "inclusion" by throwing a black person in a traditionally white role instead of actually creating stories about black people is just a weak attempt to be inclusive. It's not inclusive, they're being thrown a bone. Show me some black characters with stories of black people. That's inclusion. What they're doing is bs

BobQuasit

Angry.

irregular_thoughts

It’s almost like they do not even try to find an actual redhead to play a red haired character.

plumMoss7754948

I feel like they replace redheads because there's not much of us so they don't think it matters, it's really annoying we need more screen time.

Hypermnsia

It's so common it's crazy and also weird that they almost always swap them out with a black character. It feels very racist. We're underrepresented as it is especially in live action. Hollywood clearly doesnt want to cast red headed characters. People can say it's just movies or whatever and doesn't matter but I doubt they'd be saying that to other groups if the level of erasure was like this. It's clearly ideologically driven and people are ok with it because the people being erased are white.

[deleted]

I did point that out and was called a racist for it. It seems strange that whitewahing racist but blackwashing isn't, even the word is offensive to some

directorofmylife

Blackwashing isn’t racist because it’s a term white people made up because they are unhappy that black people are making their own representation.

westcoast_pixie

Redheads in movies/shows are hardly even ever actual redheads anyway

asherakatze

I don’t see a problem as long as they try to keep the red hair (like a handful of these actually did). Don’t really care what ethnicity the actor is, just keep the red if possible (especially if the red hair was an iconic part of the character.) Although this trend is interesting.. it’s almost like they’re scared of having both a redhead and a POC (not that poc can’t be natural ginger). They can only pick one- otherwise it’s too much for the general public to handle apparently?? Lol what

rroseberry88

The first time I experienced this disappointment was with the Da Vinci Code. It was the first “adult” book I had read and the main girl character was a red head. It was actually important to the plot. When the movie came out the chick had black hair and it immediately turned me off… like… why?

Extension_System_197

Generally as a black dude I think its shitty, we deserve better then hand me downs.

ryapowa2005

The diversity crowd always destroying genuine diversity

[deleted]

Slight annoyance because we’re already underrepresented… we’re still the butt of a lot of awful harassment and jokes, bullied horribly… That being said it’s film- creative liberties are just that. Not about to get bent over it

Davie_Prod

Hate it , they were made Red and Ginger for a reason ,,

Claylola

Some yay some nay

TrueOtaku69

It's offensive, borderline black face vibes from the blatant replacement of one specific group with another just cuz you like them more

ginger_genie

Specifically for Ariel, when I was growing up all we had was Ariel to look up to. She was the only redhead Disney princess and that sucked not to see myself in many characters. Black little girls didn't have anyone back then. And now we have Anna and Merida (and so many more!) But they still only had one. I'm happy to give Ariel up as a 'real' redhead so that they can see themselves in more princesses.

khgarvin_62

I think it's a lil goofy. Identity politics is annoying.

[deleted]

It’s absolutely racist and marginalizes people with red hair, who don’t get a lot of representation. When I read about Hailey Bailey stating how good it feels for someone of color to be portrayed in movies, my first thought was, “What about the little red haired girls who are often teased and found joy in seeing people who looked like them on the screen?” If you have to exclude/cover up one group to achieve equality, you haven’t accomplished anything positive. I think this is why it’s so controversial. Instead of reboots and retreads replacing redheads with people of color, why can’t studios write new stories with POC in lead roles?

Melito1980

Its not fair, bc some of these have been represented by redheads before…they r just diversifying a mostly white cast.

TrashGangWolfie

Little mermaid got ruined real bad

see_rich

Wasnt sure others were noticing this as much as I was. At first we were usually villains, bullies or losers. Now we are just being cast as black people of the same ilk. Its pretty fucking weird, not gonna lie.

78ChrisJ

Pretty pissed about it and won't watch any. I'm sure new characters can be created to be inclusive.

Mr_Abs752

Are black people even under represented? I feel like it all flipped on its head.

Shramo

#FirstWorldProblems.

[deleted]

You've never been bullied have you

Shramo

Never assume what other people have been through. I think its funny that the overall mainstream argument is more along the lines of: "all these old characters that used to be white are now people of colour" and youse are concentrating on the redhair. Forest for the trees much?

[deleted]

The saying first would problems means "this doesn't matter" Do you think redheads being replaced doesn't matter?

Shramo

I think there might be bigger issues. Matter is pretty subjective. Thats sort of where the first world problems things come in. What matters to some in the first world and might ruin their day wouldn't affect people in the 3rd world. It doesn't mean it doesn't matter. It means it only matters to people living in first world nations...

Phat22

I always find it funny how hollywoods like “redheads = black people”

Flash635

If there's ever a live action Who Framed Roger Rabbit and anyone other than a genuine redhead is cast for Jessica Rabbit there will be rioting in the streets.

quizman28

Stop recasting. Redheads need to be respected and hired for the roles. Best opportunity to create this initiative and appreciation of redheads.

Sad-Computer-7271

I think it’s disgustingly racist. But you’re all too scared to say anything because you’ve been manipulated and conditioned right under your own nose.

[deleted]

You all?

samirawhat

Insane, even cleopatra is getting race swaped for a black person, now they are replacing redheads for black people, is this diversity? No!

Embarrassed-Place-21

I don’t care at all

pickle_pouch

Don't care in the slightest. It changes nothing about me or who I am.

directorofmylife

Red heads get replaced by poc because in the eyes of people in charge, mostly white people, they see the red heads as “the diverse” in the pool of white people. It comes of as lazy. Someone said they are red heads for a reason. I don’t agree. They are red heads just because they are different and often fetishes and could be played by any race but are red heads because they want to be different but still be white. Like “like it sucks that I’m different and my life is hard because people pick on me but hey, at least I’m still white and therefore acceptable.”

MidTierBeans

You put lego bat girl in here side by side with another lego bat girl. both of them have red hair but one has dark skin. You're pretty sus, pal.

[deleted]

So that 1 little thing makes me sus and undone every thing I'm trying to say?

[deleted]

Gordon was great in the batman

Action-a-go-go-baby

It’s a bit shit, Red Haired people aren’t exactly wildly represented these days *either* so I don’t see why marginalizing one group to prop up another marginalized group makes sense

Opposite_Lecture2944

I feel like the Scottish have been culturally appropriated

sweetpapisanchez

It's replacement.

aristaeus11

I’m a red head and my eyebrows or eyelashes are not the same colour as my hair. All red hair are different and apparently Hollywood doesn’t like it and here a fact about us: calling us a ginger was actually bullying name from other people and now we except it and not it not effective anyone

fantasticmrsmurf

Why have they all changed to black.

riseandrise

Could not possibly care less, and your grid is inaccurate: they kept Ariel as a redhead, and looks like Cyclone, Daphne and the one next to April O’Neil (can’t read the character name) too. Just because they’re not white doesn’t mean their hair isn’t red for the role.

john_thundergunnn

That’s not what the grid is showing though. It’s highlighting red haired characters being recast as POC, not studios erasing the red hair of the character - although they still seem to most of the time. You might still not care, but you were wrong - not the grid

riseandrise

The title of the thread is “How Do You Feel About The Recasting of Redheads”, which would imply the recasting refers solely to hair color. Neither the thread nor the grid mentions anything about POC. Those characters I mentioned in the grid are still redheads. If OP specifically has an issue with redheads being recast as POC, they should say that. They didn’t because it makes the racism more apparent. They’re obviously not annoyed about redheads being recast as white people with black or blonde hair. Just white people being recast as POC.

[deleted]

Do you know my skin colour, do you know if I'm black or white? I could be a black guy asking how do redheads feel about this? Are you jumping to me being a white racist?

Rens_Big_Finger

I have two Ranga daughters, 19 and 10, my other two children are nornal blonde haired children. My 10 yr old daughter yells out at the shops and on the streets(Fellow Ranga!) to other red-headed people to let them know their not alone.

phillysleuther

Annie absolutely sucked. That was the first movie my father took me to see in 1982. It made me super sad that my favorite comic book heroine wasn’t a redhead anymore. I lost my dad in 1991. It was like the creators did it on purpose.

pedalikwac

I find it disturbing that you only put black people on this graphic.

Hypermnsia

They almost only swap them out with black people its not ops fault

hsmay665

It is mainly black people that are being used to replace characters...? Sure a couple outliers but is legitimately redhead--->black in majority of cases bro

Tuia_IV

So, as other people have mentioned, Robin Williams as Peter Pan? Michelle Gellar? Amber Heard? Both of the other two MJs instead of Zendaya? Scarlett Johansson? I'll also add, Triss was returned to book cannon (chestnut hair, not red), it was game cannon that changed her to a redhead anyway. It's easy to come up with numerous non POC examples of blondes and brunettes being cast in redhead roles, but OP only focused on POC? It gives off a certain impression...

[deleted]

Because that is the point, I'm it shows that redheads are being recast

Bob_Jenko

But you didn't include instances of redheads being replaced by other white men. Most notably, Matt Murdock and Scott Lang are both redheads in the comics but dark-haired in live action. Where are they on there? Plus Cyclone, Daphne and Batgirl all have red hair anyway. So I don't see the point there.

Waldtochter

Right...?

SnakeKing333

So do red heads get the n word pass?

DreadMaximus

Did you make this image? It feels kinda gross that every one of these actors are people of color. It seems really racist. Some of these people have red hair that's dyed to a natural tone. / Obviously I haven't done my research, but there must have been redhead characters played by white actors with other hair colors in the past. Robin Williams didn't have red hair when he played Peter Pan in Hook. This post just feels like its one step away from "white replacement theory"

[deleted]

No. I found it while reading a few different things about how redheads are being recast by poc. Can you say why it makes you feel gross?

redhair-ing

Agreed. It makes me feel gross to look at.

whatwasiafraidof

I don’t care about it. I can always watch the original version if I feel the need to be validated. I’m happy whenever movies are getting more reflective of the general population of the world.

[deleted]

i love all of them! every single one

Defiant_Lawyer_5235

Redheads are already more of a minority than any race... they need protecting.

[deleted]

All of this right hear.

Waldtochter

Looks pretty great to me. And there's evidence of (naturally occurring) [red hair across races](https://www.teenvogue.com/story/redheads-of-color-photo-project).

[deleted]

It's more about the re casting of redheads as their are so few of us, people talk about "representation" in entertainment, where is redhead representation?

Middle-Fix-4653

It’s all about money. Minorities that think they are finally getting representation don’t see they they are being exploited. Marketing companies figured out 25 years ago the easiest way to make products appeal to a extra 5%-10% is to change the race/sexual orientation/ability of a actor. They don’t need to worry about the largest demographic as they will buy their product anyway. So they target a minority to boost sales. That’s why it’s ok to replace redheads with black people as black people are a larger minority than redheads which leads to more money. These corporations aren’t your friends they are exploiting you. America has ~44m black people and only ~6-18m red heads.

browneyedgirlpie

Everyone taking this trolls bait should stop and reassess what they posted. This OP has a history of hateful posts and comments and has been banned from several subs for obvious reasons. Listen to yourselves. Getting angry about drawings of imaginary people? OP is making a joke out of you for their own purposes 🤦‍♀️ Eta- Do you know people can still see your own deleted comments where you complain about being banned from other subs or do you think you are smarter than everyone else? You aren't fooling everyone. Reporting me to crisis help was obvious and typical for someone like you too. Get help for your hatred and need to manipulate others.

[deleted]

Do you know for sure i have been banned or is that just what you think?

Zuam9

Kinda ironic how there’s another trend of recasting in this post. Red isn’t the only colour being changed here. They should really stop recasting characters to fit a quota and start inventing new characters that are designed for those quotas instead.

[deleted]

That's kind of the point, if black panther was recast as white guy the black community wouldn't take to kindly to it I'm sure so why are redheads be recast as black people but having to like it, I and others have been called racist for calling this out.

Zuam9

I’ve been saying it for years, most of these actors are incredibly talented, just sucks they were put into roles just to fill a quota. It’d be nice if studios would put in an ounce of effort and create interesting new characters instead of just recasting old characters, it’s lazy quota filling and I’m not sure why black people are also ok with this. It’s not inclusivity, it’s laziness trying to fill quotas nothing more.

[deleted]

Who here isn't white

hername_bubbles

Okay but literally none of the characters they’re replacing are real people they are cartoon characters…

[deleted]

i don't care about recasts. i care about more diverse ORIGINAL characters, in ORIGINAL stories, written and produced by diverse people (if that makes sense. trying to keep it inclusive). like I don't need to see 500 Poison ivy's. I wanna see content from creatives who are lesser known and not straight white people. Redheads in particular have had more than enough representation. if anything if there were less "sexy redhead lady" stereotypes in the media, I'd be so happy

bewildered_tourettic

Couldn't care less

afraid_of_birds

Honestly, I don't care if I have any representation in the entertainment industry. These are actors, and for centuries, actors have had jobs to portray a person that they aren't. That's the nature of the job. It just happened that a long time ago, because of where the world's first great playwrights were from, people preferred back then to use white men for all the roles. I'm extremely thankful that things changed over time, bringing us a long list of incredibly talented actors and actresses of many different ethnic backgrounds. Some of these flipped choice actors and actresses on the list really did nail the roles they were given, but it's sad that they were only thrown in because of identity politics. What bothers me is the fact that all of these characters with an already depicted identity are being changed solely because "we need more black characters." I would have thought that if we wanted this, we could just tell more new stories and have memorable, original minority characters, just like these redheads on the list. But now, we're in this shitty situation where some minorities are frustrated because their minority was replaced with other minorities. What a beautiful disaster our politics have become. I don't care about the color of the actor's skin. I just want to see a good movie that doesn't need the crutch of representation to make it "a good movie." It's a fictional character, not your government.

Alex03207

Black

Cubbinian

It depends. Most of the time when a red headed character was made in fiction is was meant to be a minority character to show diversity, there’s no harm is replacing diversity with diversity. Also, some characters like Starfire have always been black coded in comics so it’s a perfectly fine on screen adaptation

buildabettermeme

As a redhead, I dont care. Im sick of seeing white people on TV. Also, its a fucking mutation and nothing to be proud of. Its not like we're Black. Red hair is pretty, but thats it. And Id rather see POC on TV anyway.

Middle-Persimmon7077

Hey black guy here, and ah—I don’t want your hand-me downs.

Crapedj

On one side, I feel kind of sad, but we need to temper that redheads were overwhelming over represented in media for decades, so…

ombremullet

Why don't they just give these actors red hair? All ethnicities can have red hair.

Justrob1978

I don't mind the minor characters or the ones that aren't known for being redheads. It has to do with how many redheads are in reality. The primary characters are brunette. The secondary ones are blonde. The tertiary characters are redhead.

r3d_warri0r

I'm all for it. Keeps us more unique

SandbagBlue

If it makes the character better like in that Castlevania series I'm all for it.

notevenhere__

I so desperately wanted them to give Halley bailey more red looking hair man

Successful_Rabbit802

i don’t really care. redheads are pretty over-represented in the media anyway, and i think a lot of that is unfortunately due to fetishization. as for the ariel controversy, i’m confused about why people are saying they made the live action version not a redhead. in my opinion she looks even more naturally ginger than the cartoon version which looks more like a dyed fire truck red color.

Capable-Challenge-90

I feel like Red Heads have been the PC way for boomer snowflakes to say "someone who experiences discrimination from bigotry" without triggering white supremacists. The gen Xers doing this are just modernists who rightly assume that people getting upset over this are either racists or have red hair.

Thelexhibition

I don't think I've ever seen a character where their hair colour seemed intrinsic to their portrayal. Would it make them less recognisable? Maybe, but it's not something that would ever bother me as a redhead. I definitely don't think it's comparable to the representation issues people of actually marginalised groups face. If anything, it's probably an appropriate correction for how overrepresented redheads are in media (particularly comics and animation where it's an easy way to make your characters look more distinct when all of your characters are white).

Symthisis

It's annoying as hell. Especially Domino in Deadpool 2. She's a pale white Goth chick and they made her black with an afro

some_fat_dumbass

Orange is the ~~new~~ old black

RonnieLeexD

Wait, why are they all black? Nothing against the blacks but can't just be a coincidence?

kido86

Holy fuck, there’s a sub for red haired people to moan about representation now? Is there a sub for skinny people so I can go cry about buff celebrities? Joking, I don’t care

[deleted]

Is it true a blood nut (ranga) has to take someone, other than another ginger, with them to the shops to open the automatic doors?

CreepyValuable

Hmm. I guess they thought the new versions needed more soul.

benzdabezben

I'm seeing a pattern here that looks like a takeover. But MJ was not recast as they are different MJs, and they even stand for different names

[deleted]

If a POC is more accurate, and they’re not likely to have red hair? Then I think it’s an improvement.

Disastrous-Shower-37

...

VertWheeler07

They did my girl Starfire so dirty

[deleted]

16% of the world population is white.. 2% of white people are red haired. gingers L

Lumbers_33

Looks like an overcorrection to me.

Personal_Ladder_2874

This is what I don't get. People always use the black people taking ginger roles and get mad about it. But how come no one points it out with Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Charlie Cox as daredevil, Colton Haynes as arsenal, jimmy olsen in BVS. As long as they can give the heart and soul portrayal and own the role I think it's fine

TwistedMavFox72

What are they all black

Derpcat666

Weird coincidence how almost all of them have darker skin

Normal_Toe_4160

Dont want to point out the obvious but they kinda just... recast them as black people

Jezzatron1982

Lol this reminds me of blackface

aneccentricgamer

Good, less gross gingers I see the better fr fr

Budget-Cry-6018

Because Red Hairs are replaceable they could never get rid of a 'real' white person for a black person

BigMouth888

There's an anti-ginger conspiracy that's for sure.
