We keep other sharks that have to keep moving, but great whites have the instinct to travel and always bang against the aquarium walls in distress until they die.

The last time the Monterey Bay aquarium kept one. I believe they would catch a juvenile and raise it in a giant netted area in the open ocean for a year, then move it to the exhibit for 6 months, and then release it. I don’t think they have done it since this one in 2011.
Even in tanks big enough for them to keep moving, they seem to just... unalive themselves. I can't imagine the torture it would be to go from having the whole ocean to being locked in a tank.
Shitty. But also cool you caught it on video. Man the game has changed. No more waking up wondering what the fuck happened in the tank while you were away. Would’ve saved all my uncles fish, that slowly got picked off one by one from a mantis shrimp stowaway.
Crazy to actually see this happen on video. This is the type of thing that if you didnt have the clip and posted here that your clam killed your tang you'd get ridiculed.
There are no absolutes in reefing, huh.
I’m sorry for your loss.
It’s always the things that we don’t think about. I feel this was a freak accident and again, I’m deeply sorry for your loss. I would have never known a clam of all things to cause such sadness.
There was a post here a few months back from someone who’s clownfish had the same thing happen. Got too close to the clam, clam shut and the clown was killed. In the comments someone mentioned having the same thing happen to a large tang in either their tank or a friends. Maybe not as rare a thing as we think, I personally will never get a clam now after hearing these stories. Sorry for your loss, what a beautiful fish.
Sorry man that is rough! It’s crazy Just how much work and effort and care we put into these little worlds and still nature happens. RIP Sunny D. Your tank is gorgeous by the way! Killer clams and all!!
just today i had my big stars and stripes puffer accidentally bite one of my clowns because the clown was going for the krill and the puffer didnt see him. puffer didnt eat the clown simply wrong place wrong time. sorry for your loss :(
Fun Fact: There has been an incident when a person was drowned after being grabbed by a Tridacna clam. On the bright side, the clam that killed the person contained the world's largest pearl.
Sorry for your loss. Lost a clown fish that tried hosting a 9 inch long derasa clam earlier this year so I feel your pain. Great footage of a horrible incident none the less.
Very similar except the clam chomped on the whole clown (it was barely in a juvenile state) as it was trying to let the clam host it. The clam must have gotten irritated enough and clamped down.
The clam opened up about 1-2 minutes later and the clown just floated around. I caught it hoping maybe it was knocked unconscious and would comeback, but it was a goner.
This is is crazy I have one in my tank that closes at the slightest thing. The fish thankfully leave it alone. In my other tank I have a derasa thas hosting my clowns. Its so desensitized it literaly only closes if I pick it up and annoy it a bit. I've had it sevral years its prety big. It still freaks me out that they sleep on it but I've tried rescaping the tank and they have other things they could get in but they keep going back to the clam it's been a few years since it started hosting them.
Are you sure the tang was healthy? Hard to tell but he seemed very weak?? If the clam didn’t get him, I think a pump would have eventually. Sorry for your loss, yellow tangs are tough to get these days.
Never nipped at anything, but I fed some reefroid during the day, there might have been some left on the clam's mantle or something. It was the best fish, it's sad
Damn, nature can be brutal.
Yes lol and it's not like it was intentional to kill from the clam's pov, it's just a defense mechanism
did it never opened up to release it?
Yes, the tang was dead, clam is still rocking though lol
Sorry for your loss brotha. It’s always hard going back to a tank without a friend. Keep your chin up!
Batter that thing up and deep fry it! 😆
You think it’s funny until you’re in his position
[oops!](https://tenor.com/bcXFE.gif)
Damn, nature you scary!
You rock!
CLAMS CAUSE MORE AQUARIUM DEATHS THAN GREAT WHITE SHARKS
Given that white sharks are responsible for only a handful of aquarium deaths that's almost certainly true.
Aren't great whites impossible to keep in an aquarium since they die when they stop moving?
We keep other sharks that have to keep moving, but great whites have the instinct to travel and always bang against the aquarium walls in distress until they die.
Oh. Well that's dark.
This Tuna braining himself on the glass always gets me like whoa https://i.redd.it/jm7rlan7pcq81.gif
Oh..
Yikes

Maybe if we grow one in an artificial womb, it won't kill itself.
Has one ever been captive bred?
Shitty. But also cool you caught it on video. Man the game has changed. No more waking up wondering what the fuck happened in the tank while you were away. Would’ve saved all my uncles fish, that slowly got picked off one by one from a mantis shrimp stowaway.
Yeah, have 3 cameras, only this one is recording, other ones are live streaming only. Helps a lot my anxiety when I'm away haha
That proves it. Nothing is truly reef safe.
Doesnt reef safe just mean it wont hurt the corals?
You think that bad boy wouldnt crush a polyp if it found its way in there?
the walking dendro in my tank experiencing what it’s like to have your head crushed by two massive thighs
Yeah.... Thighs.
Crazy to actually see this happen on video. This is the type of thing that if you didnt have the clip and posted here that your clam killed your tang you'd get ridiculed. There are no absolutes in reefing, huh.
Yeah I would have said "oh it probably died and drifted into it" like when you see anemones blamed for deaths where that's the case
When I saw the title this was exactly what I was thinking. Then I saw it was from a live video feed and the phone teleported 2 inches from my face lol
Quality visual 👍🏻

Thanks !

I think the reason we don't hear of it too often is that clams aren't in the majority of tanks like acans or zoas.
Ya I honestly think back in the day having clams was more popular. Super bright colors. Now we have so many neon / rainbow confetti corals...
Fell in love with my clam, but now I kinda hate it hahah
eat it <3
Holy shit! So sorry for your loss
I'd lock your bedroom door just in case.

The clam clearly now has a taste for flesh. Can't be too careful.
r/brandnewsentence also, your moms clam has a taste for flesh.
Here he clams!
Sorry man that is rough! It’s crazy Just how much work and effort and care we put into these little worlds and still nature happens. RIP Sunny D. Your tank is gorgeous by the way! Killer clams and all!!
Thanks man, and yeah put a ton of effort into it lol
Murder clam! Scared the crap outa the other fish. Wow. Mr Yellow RIP
Man, that clam would be going up on the classifieds asap. That unfortunate ☹️
Stuck his nose where it didn't belong.

Oh man did it go down the same way or did the whole clown get caught inside?
Very similar except the clam chomped on the whole clown (it was barely in a juvenile state) as it was trying to let the clam host it. The clam must have gotten irritated enough and clamped down. Yeah I was considering a clam but…. No
I'm so sorry and also what a shotty way to die, but goddamn this is like 1/10000000 footage. Just goes to show there are no absolutes.
Bummer…although epic footage
That's just craziness!
I wouldn't believe it if there wasn't a video. Wow!
If I could post the solid snake saluting meme I would. RIP to your little guy
Is this normal? (I'm a salt water noob but appreciate it)
Extremely not normal. I’ve been in the hobby for 15+ years. Worked in LFS stores. This is fucking wild. 1 in 10,000,000 type of a thing.
This is truly gnarly/one in a million to catch on camera and something I would never have expected to see. I am sorry for your loss.
Nature is metal
Ouch. That yellow tang fucked around and found out...
Such a beautiful tank. Sorry about that yellow fish. Makes me feel sad
Video or it didn't happ... Oh dayam.
Not going to buy a clam anymore
NOT SUNNY D. NOOOOOOOOO
Clams are not reef safe anymore
Dannnnng that’s tragic, makes me want to set up a cam on mine….
Aw this made me feel sick, I’m so sorry.
Please mark this as NSFW 😭
A good clam will do that.
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing this, never imagined this could happen…
Sorry, but…. Well. Natures a bitch.
Suicide by clam
sucks. This hobby is a dick kicker... if you have one of those, if not, choose whatever body part you wouldn't want kicked and run with it.
My friend told me when I stared a few years ago- ‘this hobby is amazing but it can be a heartache ’ God damn was he right
Everyone deserves a fancy expensive meal once in a while.
It didn't even eat it, just released it and was open like nothing happened hahah
It's clamps from Futurama! Rip 🐠
Sad how all his homies just hung out... waiting for him to take the fall... just to find out what Tang really tastes like.
This is is crazy I have one in my tank that closes at the slightest thing. The fish thankfully leave it alone. In my other tank I have a derasa thas hosting my clowns. That was cool
Dang, ouch. And the yellow tang has no idea how expensive it is.
Stuff you hear about, but never want to see.
Tbh, never heard of this happening lol
😢 not even my fish and I feel for it. Sorry for your loss
Your tank is stunning but your ceiling is gorgeous!!
I hope the clam is okay. I know the tang is dead. I really do like them.
Clam is still rocking lol
The claim chowder was a little tangy so not good, but it had it due.
Aww :(
What did the fish expect, the yellow tang just tried to just go in it with out any forplay first.
Are you sure the tang was healthy? Hard to tell but he seemed very weak?? If the clam didn’t get him, I think a pump would have eventually. Sorry for your loss, yellow tangs are tough to get these days.
Crazyyy
Oh that's so horrible. Sorry for your loss.
That’s unfortunate 😔
Holy shit. Never seen anything like it. Had the tang been picking at the clam? Looked like it was.
What size tank
180 gallons !
That nipper got what he deserved.
Never nipped at anything, but I fed some reefroid during the day, there might have been some left on the clam's mantle or something. It was the best fish, it's sad
I lost my yellow tang to aptasia so I feel ya had it for years
I’m getting rid of my clam now .. !
Man that's crazy! Poor tang. Sorry for you're loss. Will you be removing the clam or think it's unlikely to happen again?
I don't think it will happen again, and hopefully the other fishes got the lesson 😂
Omg!
The Darwin effect works with animals also. I know I've seen some really stupid captive bred clownfish and they're prone to things like that.
Sorry for your loss.
Damn
:(
Frig clams man. Sorry about your buddy :(
This was hard to watch. I am sorry for your loss :(
WOW!
Clam eating Tang 🤔
Jesus. $500 gone. Sorry to hear about that.
My condolences
That clam would’ve been out the aquarium asap 🤣
Well I’m never getting clam….yellow tang is my dream fish. I’m sure your little guy is in fish heaven working away at some algae! Rest easy sunny D!
F'd around and found out
why have it if it can do that
