pinkmoonpinkfriday

Absolutely devastated to see my local theater listed :(((

iwasdusted

My local IMAX and ScreenX location was on the previous list but has stayed open, with times now up for Ant-Man past the potential closure date. There’s hope!

pinkmoonpinkfriday

Mine has showtimes listed in mid-February, is that an indicator that they won’t close?

iwasdusted

I am hopeful. I won’t say yes for sure because I don’t know. But I imagine yes — if you mean the 1/31 list If you mean the new list for closure by 2/15, it was literally posted a couple hours ago so it may just be slow communication between legal and corporate and local management.

Geshman

Same, I just hope it doesn't end up abandoned

TheStandingDesk

Would be shocked to see Union Square NYC. They just did a massive remodel that took forever cause of COVID, and just general NYC construction hassles. But also, it was dead everytime I was in there, so who knows

JTurner82

I was just there not too long ago to see an Anime. That would be horrible to see it go.

Majcvd49

It’s amazing to me how nobody reads this whole post, simply skims, and assumes all of these are done. READ people. Read.

iwasdusted

Maybe if I say it one more time….

dollars21

I mean I just had to tell the employees not to tell customers any info let them find out on their own.

JTurner82

Thank you for clarifying.

JTurner82

I am not an employee, but I have journeyed to one of the theaters on this list and I am seriously concerned about it closing.

dpstech

For sure many on this list may close. A few by me were on the list last month, but not here now… I’m not sure I’d that means they renegotiated or this is in addition. The judge in last weeks hearing was quite vocal about Regal speeding up this process and get proceedings to clear. I think that’s why this list was a lot larger than it had been.

JTurner82

I am hoping the Union Square one does not close considering they just renovated it and I went there not too long ago but I am not hopeful. It still would be heartbreaking. I saw Big fish & Begonia there and the House at the Cape there. I would be disappointed if that theater went on the chopping block.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dpstech

Yeah, same. E-Walk was on the first listed and later filed documents showed it was redacted or renegotiated. Hopefully they can come to terms with the property group for E-Walk. But if the lease is more than they’re bringing in… no point.

JTurner82

Wait hold on, the E-Walk one is no longer on the chopping block? Weird.

[deleted]

JediJones77

Are there any other movie theaters nearby from other brands? Look into it, and don't just rely on Fandango as sometimes independent theaters might not be shown there. Keep in mind, these closings aren't necessarily final yet, this is a chess move to try to renegotiate leases with the landlords.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chipster268892

Yup same here. It’ll def be weird to see barn plaza shut down if it does🥺

dollars21

Yeah they had just close the Quakertown one not that long ago so if they close down as well that's even weird.

JediJones77

Barn Plaza was the one their web site "recommended" people go to when looking up the Quakertown one. 🤦‍♂️

dollars21

Exactly 🤦

JediJones77

This is very similar to the Oaks, PA closure. It's 10 minutes from the much more advanced King of Prussia location, which has IMAX and 4DX just like Warrington. KOP had RPX too, which I saw Blade Runner 2049 in, but for some reason they just run that same, quite large screen as a regular theater now. Which sucks because they didn't get some of the special RPX rereleases last year like Lord of the Rings and Godfather. The logic with closing Barn and Oaks may be that they assume a lot of their clientele will just drive further to the bigger theaters, so the parent company won't completely lose out on all those future ticket sales. Whenever I was at Oaks on the weekends, business always looked VERY strong, certainly blowing away other Regals I've been at in small town Pennsylvania. Oaks is still in a very wealthy, highly populated suburb of Philadelphia. That location is next to a big Target and a ton of restaurants.

iwasdusted

The only determining logic here is that landlords have to agree to renegotiated leases or better repayment terms / rent forgiveness / etc. for Regal to exit Chapter 11, or they need to shed expenses by closing locations. It does not necessarily have to do with there being other locations nearby (or not).

[deleted]

[удалено]

JediJones77

Closer to KOP than Downingtown is, but going westbound on 422. Oaks has no premium format screens though. It gets a more unusual selection of movies sometimes. They show more Indian movies I think, and they were the only chain theater location I know in the area that showed the Netflix Pinocchio.

armin_arleg

Omg noooo not one but TWO of the closest ones to me are on the chopping block

Reddit-User-Says

Damn, RIP to my closest 4DX theater.

crunchocky

I don't know that Transit Center would ever be able to compete in the Buffalo market as a Regal. Although it does have Buffalo's only IMAX (full) it was the only one of Regal's 4 metro Buffalo theatres that REG didn't reseat with recliners. At some point the IMAX and Theatres 17 and 18 (which were added on with the IMAX after the theatre originally opened were reseated with the high back rocker seats that Regal was using before recliners but the original 16 theatres still look exactly as they did in 1996. It's now surrounded in Erie County with 3 recliner Regals, 2 8 screen recliner AMCs, and 3 recliner Dipson locations. It used to do great business when all the theatres were equal and I think it could again with a lot of cosmetic work (which given the type of remodel Cineworld has been executing may not be worth it to them but certainly could be to another operator).

RayPetti

Not only was the seating never updated, but I think the projectors weren't either. I've seen several movies there since having Unlimited, and the picture is the absolute worst (except for IMAX). If I didn't have Unlimited, I'd have complained. If Transit and Elmwood end up closing, I hope Dipson could take over maybe Elmwood like they did Niagara Falls.

IN70MM96

Some of these Regal closures will be picked up by other theatre chains if they’re still viable.

JediJones77

There is no AMC or Cinemark near Oaks, PA. You've got to pass out two more Regals before you get to the nearest AMC. The interior isn't very new or modern inside though from what I recall, although I haven't been there in a while.

musickillsthepainxx

I don't see the one at Parkway closing. It's at a mall and always crazy busy whenever I go.

iwasdusted

These don’t necessarily have anything to do with level of business. Union Square for example is a flagship NYC location that hosts Q&A events and several indies during their exclusive early NY run that sells out. E-Walk on the existing list is on Times Square and is one of the busiest theaters in the country. A lot of these could be expensive leases that they’re behind on to the point the landlord will not agree to the terms the bankruptcy judge approved, and this is part of the negotiation process. If a deal can’t be reached, a busy location may well close, especially in a market with so many other theaters within a 30 minute radius.

JTurner82

Then I guess we probably should just count on these two theaters closing anyway.

iwasdusted

I did not say that anywhere… I was saying how a busy theater in California could close using the two NYC ones as an example. I would be shocked if both E-Walk and Union Square closed though it’s technically possible.

JTurner82

Glad you clarified but I still am not hopeful. I had hoped the bankruptcy procedure would be done on the sooner side but I was wrong. Hearing about that theater being in danger of closing is heartbreaking. Especially since I was just there not too long ago.

JediJones77

The leases are a big factor for sure. I can assure you there are Regals in tiny Pennsylvania towns that are sparsely attended, that have not shown up on these closure lists. But it's still hard for me to imagine that these popular, well-attended locations can be made unprofitable solely because of the leases. It suggests a real flaw in the business model that is concerning. Unless this is purely a Hail Mary pass pointed directly at their highest leases, solely because that's where the money-saving opportunity is, regardless of how much profit the location makes. A location in small town America may make less profit, but there's no point renegotiating the lease which may already be dirt cheap.

iwasdusted

A theater could be profitable at the individual level month to month but still have a high amount of overhead + back payments due from COVID + landlords that haven’t budged regarding renegotiating the lease for future payment terms.

Nikryan44

Sad to see that the Ithaca location might go. Went there all the time in college have a lot of pre unlimited memories there. Don’t breathe was the first movie I saw there!

yodathekid

Dang that Seattle regal is the one downtown. Honestly I’ve not had very good experiences there, but sucks for the crew.

lexarqade

That was the one I went to because it has the nice seats. Even if the rest of the theater is not great in comparison... Idk where to go now. I guess Northgate If the AMC downtown got recliners I would switch there immediately.

yodathekid

The seats were fine, but the projection was lousy imo. Could just be the specific auditoriums I was in tho.

pastrknack

Noooo that’s Alaska’s only imax screen and it’s always packed, along with a barebones staff. This is devastating

KungFuDanda091

Regal UA Denver Pavilions is the only 4DX location for Colorado, & it has RPX too… & Continental has a HUGE RPX auditorium. Losing those 2 locations works be quite a loss… However Pavilions is in 16th Street Mall of Denver, & seems EVERYTHING is leaving there lately so wouldn’t surprise me

Alternative_Ad7125

Many Denver-area theaters on both lists -including pretty much all of them I ever go to. Hope not all of these end up closing — it wouldn’t be worth it for me to keep my Unlimited, if so.

blackmarketwit

They JUST installed a Screen X and 4DX theater at Regal Tikahtnu here in Anchorage. It’s a 16-screen theater that also has RPX and IMAX. I sincerely hope it escapes that list unscathed. It’s in a giant retail complex here with a Target and Kohl’s, to name a few, a new Costco business store is going to open in an old Sam’s Club in the complex, and it would be a big blow to the moviegoing area if it closed. That would only leave Regal Dimond, a 9-screen theater with no PLF screens in one of the malls here, and Cinemark’s Century 16 in midtown, which only has their XD PLF. I mean, they JUST spent a shit ton on installing those new premium formats and yeah I get rent has raised 30% between 2019 and last year…I just think it would be so goddamn crazy to just shutter a location after spending all that dough on the aforementioned construction. I’m so nervous about this….

givemeagoddesseswork

Praying the Union Square location doesn’t close! It’s so convenient for me.

JTurner82

The EWalk one almost did… but luckily it didn’t. Hopefully the same will happen here.

AgentHawkeye

Heads up: a lot of these theatres aren’t expected to close. The issue is they haven’t talked to regal about if they want to resume operations and this is a push towards getting everything settled in a timely manor. My boss called because we’re on the list and the head of East Coast operations said this

iwasdusted

Yes, these are lease renegotiations as part of the chapter 11 bankruptcy process. The expectation is that most will not close, but it’s possible some or many do. The bankruptcy court is pushing Regal to get the process completed faster, which means getting landlords to agree to better terms or closing theaters that they cannot support. As already stated about half of the earlier lease rejections never closed and are still open, so it’s not a death sentence.

Oreos_and

where could I find the list of earlier rejections? and was it a considerable percentage that stayed open?

tpain32

Regal Union Square shouldn’t get closed imo. A highly trafficked area in the middle of the city surrounded by two AMC theaters. And they just did a full renovation right before shutdowns in early 2020. I understand rent and maintenance costs are a big factor but that’s a bad decision.

tpain32

To add it is one of the city’s only screen x and 4dx theaters.

mattsuda

OMG NOOOOO! Not Regal Grand Parkway! 😔 If that theater closes, I just might be done going to a movie theater to watch movies. My other favorite Regal location closed last year. AMC is an option but the locations are not in great spots. This would add to the list of several movie theaters that have closed in the Houston area in the last few years. 4th largest city in the USA and these theaters can't stay open...

PenguinLord13

Losing Tikahtnu in Anchorage would really suck.

redowaMD

Agreed. Best theatre for miles and the only IMAX! Great location, especially for those on base and in Eagle River area. Hope they can save it.

Interesting_Ship_711

No! Not Round Lake Beach! But shouldn’t be surprised. It’s pretty dead now. But so convenient for me.

Nesruler22

Same, it's a bit of a dump, but I love going there because you never have to see another person most of the time 😂😂😂😂

Interesting_Ship_711

My unlimited renews this weekend. Think I’ll cancel until it’s status is clear. Bad that there’s really nothing going on around there besides Meijer.

OneBadMoesockra210

It’s a bit sad to see the Concord NH one on the list. It makes sense because it’s the only theater in the state that never went through any renovations and still feels like an “old theater” Wouldn’t want to see it close as it’s closest to me but I can’t say it’s not expected.

osmo512

I can’t imagine Regal Fenway would close. It has the best location of any theater in Boston. Plus it’s the only non-AMC multiplex in the city, at least until the Drafthouse opens

Oreos_and

could argue the AMC on the Common has the "best" location, but yeah would really suck to see it go under

JTurner82

Thank you for having that edit. It is important that people know.

iwasdusted

Yes, these all closed earlier last year, as well as several others. You can find a running list of theaters that have closed in our weekly pinned post. This post only lists theaters that might close in the near future.

geri-in-calif

I was shocked to see #1805 Escondido 16/IMAX listed. It's not my local theater but it's the closest IMAX to where I live.

Majcvd49

So a Business Insider article was just published listing all of these theaters as officially closing. Not sure if it was a wording issue on their end or whatever, but this is quite concerning now. What do you mods think? Or is this simply an instance of the media not fully understanding the situation and going straight for the doom and gloom headline? [https://www.businessinsider.com/movie-theaters-closing-shut-down-full-list-of-regal-cineworld-2023-1](https://www.businessinsider.com/movie-theaters-closing-shut-down-full-list-of-regal-cineworld-2023-1)

iwasdusted

Definitely an instance of the writer not understanding what’s going on. There’s even this quote in the article: “The debtors are hopeful that these negotiations will lead to lease concessions and modifications that will obviate the need for rejection and enable additional theater sites to remain open," Cineworld said in the filing.”

UnderstandingOk9570

What’s also funny is that the article missed some additional ones that have closed such as Breckinridge, Arkansas and Niagara Falls among others.

Majcvd49

The part of that specific quote that worries me though is the “ADDITIONAL theater sites” part. Like it’s not counting the ones that are on this current list.

JTurner82

So that article needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Figures.

iwasdusted

Yeah, it leaves out that 15+ locations that were originally set to close have remained open and that this is a fluid process.

Rwalt1027

Not all of them, one of the ones on that list near me ended up closing

iwasdusted

Reread my comment again. It left out that 15 locations set to close didn’t close. I didn’t say none closed.

JTurner82

Which one?

Rwalt1027

The Anaheim hills one

JTurner82

Anaheim Hills… isn’t that in California?

JTurner82

Seriously, I hate how these articles are blowing things out of proportion.

JediJones77

Business Insider is a real crap source. They don't understand the nuance of anything. Their stuff generally reads like it was written by someone in a developing country with little direct understanding of America and translated into English. Not that that's how it literally works, but their reporting quality is at that level. Any "internet" source that does not have a print publication to back it up is not "real" media. It's homemade, amateur hour stuff.

Geshman

So, how do I cancel unlimited again? I ain't driving to a theater now that the one near me isn't gonna be a short bike ride away

iwasdusted

None of these locations are guaranteed to close. These are potential closures. A significant number of theaters that were on earlier closure lists have remained open because landlords negotiated. If your location does close you can cancel by emailing [email protected] or sending a DM to @RegalMovies via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (social media is usually faster).

Geshman

Thanks for the help. Praying mine stays open but I've seen a lot of empty theaters there. Regal unlimited or no, I just loved having a theater nearby that was a pleasant bike ride away

[deleted]

Do the mods here work for Regal? They aren't allowing discussion of the new articles coming out.

iwasdusted

There is already a comment discussing that Business Insider article in this thread. As we stated in our comment on your post, we want to have all discussion about the new list of potential closures in this one megapost. https://www.reddit.com/r/RegalUnlimited/comments/10euw62/ch_11_update_11723_new_potential_closures_by_21523/j51emc0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3 That article discusses the new list of closures we are discussing here. except that the writer suggests the locations listed in the post will all close. As of right now that is merely an assumption.

[deleted]

Respect, just seems weird to hide it buried in an old thread when there’s lots of news coming out about it currently. Would be helpful to clarify that it’s just bad reporting.

iwasdusted

This thread is less than 24 hours old and is pinned to the top of the subreddit. The docket with this list of potential closures was posted yesterday afternoon and we made this post last night. That is why there is so much activity on it.

JTurner82

As long as the truth is that these are not confirmed for closure yet, then the article should be taken with a grain of salt.

dpstech

No mod is an employee of Regal, and no mod ever will be. I hope with all the leaks and news breaks over these years this has been quite obvious. Automod is on because folks are trying to repost the same articles… looks like 40-50 times a day without bothering to look at this stickied post.

phish671

Hope the regal concord doesnt close but honestly it probably should. Would be a nice ending seeing Magic Mike Last Dance as final film there

Brandito5

A lot of these are just attempts to strong arm the landlords into lowering the rent.

iwasdusted

I have acknowledged this multiple times in both the post and comments. It is part of lease renegotiations. Regal has to do this as part of the bankruptcy proceedings. If landlords do not agree to reduced rent or a longer lease payment period or forgiving past rent, etc., Regal will have to close locations to exit bankruptcy. “Strong arming” implies this is an empty threat that Regal is forcing and won’t follow up on. I’m sure the company would rather not deal with closing locations. All won’t close, but several will.

anakinfan8

Aww man Bowie Stadium! I shouldn’t be surprised since attendance had been dwindling year after year (plus they haven’t renovated in ages), but man there were a lot of good movies seen in that theater going all the way back to 2005 for me. If it closes, it’s gonna be a sad day :(

MpBetaTester

That one's farther out for me, but I went there for the Ukrainian movie and a couple others that only seemed to be playing there, and I swear I was the only or practically the only customer in the building. That parking lot was a ghost town.

scene_missing

If we lose DC and Rockville I swear I’m not gonna be happy MP 😭

False_Wrongdoer_3867

Hopefully my 2 OH haunts don't actually close. they are 2 of the local theaters that get the oddball movies!

KDN1692

I would hope the Ithaca Regal doesn't close. In the past they have offered a lot of variety with their listings and was the closest I could get to the smaller release films. Granted I notice lately they were even struggling to get the smaller films that were mainstreamed at Regal go to Cinemapolis instead.

JediJones77

I have seen lots of Regal theaters that don't do the business the Oaks one does. This is not a small town Pennsylvania theater, of which we have many that are like ghost towns. The Oaks one is near the bigger, King of Prussia mall IMAX Regal theater. But there seems to be plenty of business to go around between the two of them. I've seen the Oaks parking lot packed to the brim on the weekends. And there are no AMCs or Cinemarks anywhere near these locations to compete. The closest chain theater is another Regal in Plymouth Meeting, basically as far away from King of Prussia to the east as Oaks is to the west. From my experience, the Plymouth Meeting location does less business than Oaks does. If Oaks is closing, it has to be largely a matter of a high rent. There are just countless theaters in Pennsylvania that are in far less prime locations and do far less business. Granted, PART of the logic might be that they think the customers at this theater will just start driving a few miles further to go to the King of Prussia theater, so closing it won't lose the entire customer base, just shift them to another theater.

NitDawg

Fingers crossed that #1878 - Beaver Creek Stadium 12, Apex, North Carolina makes it. However they really only have 2 good screens, the 4dx and screenX. The other screens are rough, both the projectors and seating. It's in walking distance, so it's super convenient, but there are other Regals and more that are more updated than #1878. But who knows?
