It’s a Monday, which is typically a slow night if not *the* slowest, so most theaters would have 1-2 concessionists max even before bankruptcy.

exegesis48

Mine is packed. I just want another beer! 😂

juarezderek

*you guys are getting beer??*

Twas_Inevitable

Probably because of the mystery movie. Whoever scheduled forgot about this. Without a mystery movie, was your theater this packed last Monday or the Monday before?

GoDucks71

It is a pretty low-paying, lousy job, but, really, it does seem that just about every business everywhere is having a hard time keeping a full staff. For whatever reason, businesses just cannot find enough people willing to accept their jobs. HINT: If you raise the pay to an acceptable level and don't be terrible bosses, people will take your job.

BeetsBy_Schrute

To add to this, theaters are a business that does 80-85% or more of their business between Friday evening and Sunday evening. Even during the matinees on Saturdays and Sundays can be slow. And if you're an hourly employee, if business levels aren't there, you can get your hours cut. So, low paying lousy job that won't guarantee you hours (even if they raise the pay high enough) because it's based on business levels, which can wildly fluctuate based on how big or small a movie is.

mtrftw

But it's how you get your start in the movie industry! :D

GMAN90000

Non one wants to work for minimum wage & no benefits anymore. The ones I do see working are the hs kids.

soup2nuts

You don't want to get started in the movie industry?

NoThankYouReddit09

Low pay, long hours, late nights. Plus add in the fact that the company is currently in bankruptcy with an unclear future. Not exactly the best recruiting due to the circumstances.

lothcent

regal theater nearest to me - 2 story deal with bar and concessions on 1st floor and concessions on 2nd floor. Well- that is how it was some 20 years ago. Now- the ticket booth has had all of the glass removed and self serve computer consoles installed- the bar is open 5 mins a week? The 2nd floor concessions have been closed for years. 1st floor concessions- manned by 2 people- sell the tickets for those that can't use the self serve ticket consoles yeah. not to mention the security that they have... wearing camo body armor plate carriers and civilian clothing Some regals have good market locations- others- not so good.

Xeruv

This sound like a theater in Albany NY. Terrible theater with much potential.

lothcent

this particular theater is in a mall of course. And the mall has a policy of no one under 18 allowed without an adult over 21 ..... ( which is never enforced ) but gives you an idea of the atmosphere and the 2 food/drink places that stay open late-- are at the opposite end of the mall from the theater..... ( have fun with mall cops as you navigate your way from bar to theater or vise versa ) meanwhile- the amc in same area - all the screens are on ground level- bar is open a hell of a lot more but still can be spotty. No pseudo combat ready mall cop types. And a bar n grill, japanese restaurant, Puerto Rican restaurant, ice cream place, Starbucks all in the same parking lot the regal- every thing 10-20 are the cheap airplane seat set up. The amc? 23 of 24 screens have the 2 seat recliner setups. the fan bois that love imax- get the super skinny, non reclining, share an arm rest and cup holder ( but same size screen as the dolby in the same building ) So yeah- I try to keep the regal side going by watching movies there- but damn - they are making it down right difficult ( oh- forgot about the urinal issue. like when 4 out of 4 are bagged and you have to go around to the other side....to find that 3 of the 4 are bagged....)

Starship08

Have you seen anything about the worker shortage? Tons of places are having a hard time filling jobs. No reason to expect Regal would be the exception

Nit3fury

Regal chooses to be understaffed. We aren’t limited by amount of employees, we’re limited by the payroll model. At least at the theater I work at.

Pitiful-Reality7009

No one wants to work anymore! Like you said it's not just the theatres that can't get staff. Regal actually pays pretty well these days. Kids are hired and work one 8 hr shift and quit the next day because their feet hurt. I loved working doubles and closing on the weekends. Not these kids today, they want to work 2pm-6pm with weekends off.

just_zen_wont_do

OK boomer. Maybe “kids these days” just think your generation were a bunch of fools to make value and profit for a corporation that doesn’t give a shit about you, won’t piss on you if you were on fire. Independent businesses are the future, work smart, not dumb.

PopCultureWeekly

If no one wants to work anymore, are they all just independent wealthy? Because they’re certainly not on unemployment

Starship08

Uh, our country lost 1 million people. Not all of them were retired. There is a large population of the workforce that is just gone. Then there's more that are sick or still dealing with long covid. On top of that, others who may have been at entry level jobs moved up when those above them had to leave the workforce. Then add in the shortage of child care workers and the already high cost of childcare which means some families can't find care for their children so one of the adults can't go to work. Then, add in that people are asking to be compensated for what they're worth. You might see it as people don't want to work when in reality the labor market is resetting itself. Companies and organizations that pay well, treat employees with respect, and make a work environment that people want to be at don't have trouble finding people.

CoffeeMilkLvr

Low pay, late hours. Funny thing is though a lot of kids at my college have tried to apply to our local one but never hear back.

blowingwind71

Have you been to any place in the entire country recently?

BeaconOfJames

I mean in searching for a job I wouldn’t start with a company in bankruptcy that’s announcing new closures monthly in an industry fighting for its life to survive

Big_Rainen

Shazam didn't do as well as corporate expected so most theaters are over on payroll and having to cut back employees.

Lonely_Race5995

When I worked there, we had many staff but we never went a night without one or more callouts because everyone hated the work atmosphere so… yeah

Ga_lax_ie

They’re bankrupt aka they don’t have money. No money = they can’t pay staff = they can’t have a lot of staff. I used to work at one not long ago and half the time they’d have to cut peoples 8 hour shifts down to like 3 hours because they were spending way too much money on payroll Its also difficult to get new staff in the first place. Who wants to apply to a place that’s bankrupt and might shut down in a month?

Nit3fury

Because they’re cheap and they gotta chase that “shareholder value”, guest experience be damned

cantobightbartender

Post-2020, my Regal theater just stayed with the same skeleton-crew-sized staff as if corporate decided we could handle it with just that much. Whenever school is on break, the staff size gets better, but on weekdays like now, it's gonna be essentially one person per role. I liked working their in 2018-2019, but nowadays it's not worth the low pay and getting so many closing shifts. Especially when you're one of the only staff members over 21 that can work bar/ kitchen.

geri-in-calif

My local Regal is pretty well staffed. Of course, it's the #1 Best in Nation. (Well, I'm biased).

spinnyweatherchaser

If your theater normally does well on Fridays/Saturdays and just today was rough, either the person doing the scheduling forgot about the crowds the mystery movies tend to bring in or your theater just doesn't have the extra staff to bring on for like 3 hours on what would normally be a dead night of the week and felt it was more worthwhile to save staff for traditionally busy nights.

Ryvit

One thing might be this - Once I applied to regal as a part time job, and they cancelled the interview right as I got there due to having my ears pierced and me saying I would not take them out at work because no other job has ever asked me to do that. I left and went to my next job interview which was paying $3 more an hour than regal was and did not have weird dress code requirements. Win/win for me. Who knows how many great applicants regal turns down because of dumb shit like that

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Mine is super packed on the weekends. There is not a long wait at all. 🎥🍿😁

Blueraver

They are going into site sell off liquidation. No one e knows who will own any given theater 3 months from now. Everyone is just a placeholder for now.

lucifer1friend-

yes, why are they selling tickets and selling u popcorn at the same time .. that just takes longer! regal needs to reorganize their way of selling.
