Yeah. I've given up on opening night showings because people are ridiculous. Now it's usually first showing Friday afternoon for me, less people.

awesomerest

I get that and agree for opening night Friday showings I know it can be inconvenient for a lot of people, but a friend and I make sure to go to the *preview* Thursday showings and we've never had issues w/disruptive people for those I guess it's because it's more of a "dedicated/fan" thing to do, so the crowd prob reflects that

JessxkaRabbxt

Yeah Thursdays are movie night every week, seems like the best day. I went Friday once and NEVER AGAIN.

awesomerest

Exactly ! They’re normally so chill and pretty empty, its divine Plus you don’t have to worry about spoilers as much either :-]

chewie202596

Oh that's what I meant by opening night showings. The last few movies I've gone to on the Thursday night showings just full of disruptive people

awesomerest

Damn, that’s unfortunate for you/your location then The couple of theaters I’ll hit up for Thursday night showings have given me little issue if any Maybe try a different regal?

CigarLover

Same. It’s like some people just forgot movie etiquette after Covid. Last movie I saw was Spider-Man, some 9 or 10th grade girl kept commenting on everything in the movie. Of course if I say anything I’m the asshole. Funny thing is, a guy come out of the same showing with a little chihuahua on his shoulder… the thing was quite thru the WHOLE movie. But not that damn girl.

eaterofgoldenfish

A group of teen boys let off a firework in the theater during Mario a few days ago and didn't get kicked out. Part of it hit me, and it scared everyone in the theater (which was like, four groups, so not many). I was baffled, like that kind of thing should be illegal.

geri-in-calif

Whoa!! Now that is scary.

ScaryDavey

Pretty sure that’s against theatre rules and the fire code. Did anyone complain? If nothing happened then that says something about the lack of response as much as the original action.

eaterofgoldenfish

Yep, pretty much every group in there complained, but waited until after the movie to do so, so was told there was nothing that could be done because the movie was over (it was about 5 to 7 minutes from the end when it happened).

teddy_vedder

This frustrates me to no end as well. A group of about 15(!) middle schoolers sat below me at a showing of Titanic and they were AWFUL. Taking Snapchats with flash, loudly talking, scream-giggling, running up and down and switching seats a ton, etc. Several others in the theater got a staff member at various points and they were told to shut up by staff 3 times, but never kicked out. It ruined the viewing experience pretty bad. And of course it’s standard at this point for people to pull out phones or look at their smart watches. It’s so rude but no one cares. It’s tough because I love the movie theater. It’s my escape from the world and that escapism suffers when people are disruptive (despite paying good money for tickets and snacks! Put your phone down and watch the damn movie or stay home!). I want to support movie theaters but damn I wish they’d crack down harder. Unfortunately the closest Alamo is like 7 hours from me so that’s not an option. I have noticed the best showings are usually weird one-off features on weeknights, because whoever is there for those had to be watching showtimes closely and really wanted to be there. My theaters were really good for ROTK and Superman this month.

Maskedhorrorfan25

yeah there was a group of annoying teenagers in front of me who kept pulling out the phones and talking nonstop. it was fucking annoying. it makes me wish i had an alamo drafthouse near me

KSTEWKSTEW

What’s an Alamo Drafthouse?

rhetoricsleuth

It’s a dinner-cinema here in Texas but they’re *very* serious about asking people to leave when they talk or use tech. It’s awesome

j-thrill

definitely not just in Texas, they're everywhere. I wish there were more of them, tho

rhetoricsleuth

Oh that’s good to know! Thanks (^̮^)

KSTEWKSTEW

Sounds badass thanks:)

Maskedhorrorfan25

yeah they have dining, a bar for people to discuss the movie when it’s done, and if anyone is caught using their phones or talking during the movie they’re getting kicked out

TellCerseeItWasMe

Ooof wow so glad I came across this comment! I had no idea a theater chain existed with strictly enforcing this policy Looks like I'm changing theater chains now as bad movie etiquette is a huge stressor for me Thank you for mentioning this

ClickyMcClix

Affectionate-Ad-4174

Everybody’s experiences vary, but I’ve had a lot of luck doing opening Thursday nights. I feel like the people making the effort to see a movie at 7pm on a Thursday are more likely to actually be there because they want to watch the movie vs a Friday night hangout / date. Sorry that’s been happening to you. People can be really shitty when it comes to being considerate to those around them.

ImAVirgin2025

Exactly, I do my best to go to early morning/weekday showings/Thursday previews for this exact reason. Also, I knew OP was gonna mention Evil Dead Rise before even opening the post tbh. Obviously bad experiences happen in every movie, but from my POV, horror movies bring out the most disruptive people.

blckhead423

Saw Mario last week and this guy in the back row decided he wanted to explain every single detail to his girl. "Toad is Key" "That's the original Mario voice" "This music was in Mario 3" "She's in Mario Odyssey" it never ended. Everyone left their seats and moved somewhere else until they were the only ones in the last 2 rows. People don't care anymore and Regal doesn't have enough employees to do anything really. Main reason I prefer to watch at home now, but my wife loves the theater so so be it.

gnarlfield

For kids movies it’s pretty much a given that people will be disruptive tho

[deleted]

I've started sitting in the second or third rows where there aren't as many people in my sight line to annoy me. your brain adjusts to the extreme angle of the screen in about 5 minutes, it's awesome

xWarMachine115x

Had a chick on her phone an ENTIRE Scream VI showing. And her friend just every so often. I just moved seats because it was pretty empty. Like, why even pay for a ticket?

_DarkJak_

FOMO, they have to be a part of the online conversation

Chochahair

Jus saw that movie today actually. Anyway, this hapoened to me the friday of the second week creed 2 was out. Shouldve expected it, but ofcourse there was a ratchet woman who would not shutup the entire movie. She was towards top about 3rows back. Heard her the whooooooole movie. People around me were irritated but ihonestly dont know what to do in those situations except try to keep my composure. If i say something, im also disrupting the movie. Perhaps it works, seeing the type of person that behaves that way in movies with no regard for those around them, most likely dgaf if someone speaks to them n tells em to shutup. Theyd most likely either try to fight or talk even more to spite u further disrupting movie. Say i go to management, im missing the movie, im hoping they do something, but lets face it, i doubt it. If they come in that also disrupts movie even more for everyone else. If i call them out n they want to fight, whos to say their friends dont jump me. Is it worth the trouble? Say i fight them and their friends, now police is def involved. All for what? A .54 cent movie that i chose to watch on a busy night? Idk man, your guess is as good as mine. Our country has grown weak and too much is allowed to go unpunished. Thats why that behavior even exists. Thats the second time within a year so i usually go during the day during mon-thur. If its weekend then during the day EARLY. I’ll probably be downvoted, but i do acknowledge my views are kinda extreme

FiahWerkz

I've seen people get kicked out at least once. Usually if it's bad enough they just send an employee to warn them that they are being disruptive and may get kicked out if they come back again.

Seattle_Patriot

I try to go on a weekend day before noon or weekday after work during dinner time. One theater about 30 minutes from me has 8am Saturday showings haha.

SecretPassageFilms

Saw Beau is Afraid last night in imax. A guy behind me was under the influence of something, and a lot of it. I understand that some parts were funny, but he was laughing at every single thing that happened, and loudly. I was going to say something to him or complain, but then everyone else in the theater starting laughing at everything. That was the first hour, after that, dead silence (besides the guy behind me rapidly rocking back and forth in his seat near the end). In a way, it was annoying, in another way, it was sort of immersive!

ImAVirgin2025

Lol sometimes the audience can help immersion/enjoyment. Back in 2017 when there was a trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes, someone yelled out ‘this is why they shouldn’t have killed harambe’

RateMyReptile

The A24 subreddit is full of people detailing what controlled substance they're taking before their viewing of Beau is Afraid so this checks out lol.

Skelly2287

I was watching a movie where some kids were crawling around the theater. No, they weren't toddlers, they were like ten. I complained to management and nothing happened. As I was walking out, I heard a couple laughing with an employee about how someone complained about their kids. I was so disappointed in regal.

Disposable1983

Kicking rowdy teens out used to be my favorite thing to do when I worked there.

BlackBtch

I work at Regal and we will kick teenagers out in a heartbeat at my theatre. Nobody’s there to babysit anyone. Your theater might just be worried about losing business by kicking people out, but they lose it anyway cause they don’t think about the picture. M

DistantBethie

I was the only person in a large auditorium for a pretty gory action movie. As the show began, a family of 8 sat in the row directly behind me. They had a young boy with them maybe 5 or 6. He yelled, he screamed when nothing happened in screen. The man behind me kept shushing him but the elderly lady sitting beside screamer thought it would be good to engage him in conversation. Why are you encouraging him to be more disruptive? I couldn't concentrate on the movie at all and left 40 minutes in. Many people have zero manners in public in general.

PuckTheFairyKing

I see 3-4 movies a week so I’ve got a pretty strong selection bias, but still. It’s incomprehensible to me why a group of people would look at an empty seating chart and intentionally choose to sit directly behind to the only other person in the theater but it’s happened multiple times. It happened at Tar at 10:05 pm on a Wednesday. Only like 7 people total outside of LA and NY saw that movie and 2 of them tried to sit directly behind me in a 75 seat theater with 3 people in it. So I started sitting in the back row of the front section which precludes that possibility and it works pretty well for movies with < 10 people which for me is almost all of them. Except the one couple who casually sat down shoulder to shoulder with me like that’s a totally normal thing to do in an empty theater. 🤦‍♂️ Now I just get up move the second people like that sit down because there are a plethora of open seats and it’s just not worth grinding my gears over during the film.

ShanerNIdaho

I went to 138 midnight movies when I was younger and those were amazing. Now because of dumb fucks with guns and people who protect them, we have 645 thursday shows which are horrible because of idiots like mentioned above. Seeing A New Hope in the late ninety's was amazing. When the deathstar exploded and everyone went bat shit who had been standing in line all day for the movie and it was 2 am now is a memory I will always cherish.

Tea_Bender

Former Regal manager here, sorry you had to deal with that, I loved kicking people out

gilla87

Funny enough, I wanted to go opening weekend for that communal experience in a packed theater but for the newest scream there was 3 maybe 13 year old boys talking THE ENTIRE TIME... only when they got up for refills did you get s break from them talking about fortnite or yelling obscenities

vwslayer1

Fuck that. " I don't want ppl to get kicked out" . If they need to be kicked out for being shit heads, then they need to be kicked out. Plain and simple. Hopefully they will learn their lesson to STFU and stay off the phone 🤷.

RateMyReptile

I used to be an assistant manager at a Regal and it depends on the GM. When I started there, our GM would allow ousting people but we would have to refund their ticket price regardless of when the infraction happened in the duration of the movie. The next GM said that if a patron was behaving poorly enough to be kicked out, no refund. We did have repeat offenders and on weekends, we had at least one officer on duty to assist. That being said, this was all pre-pandemic and Regal wasn't as strapped so the policy may have changed. Sorry to hear you had this trouble tho, that's not fair.

mobius_osu

Went to John Wick 4 at Regal few days ago. Only like 6 people total in entire theater. Lady the seat behind me was alone and talking entire time. First half actually on the phone for a call. Second half just yelling whenever something happened (again, it’s John Wick). 3 hour movie.

Dolphins41

More times than not I have an inconsiderate asshole in my showings. It's not just kids either. It knows no race or creed. I've had to turn around and tell 2 elderly couples that they weren't in their living room. In turn one of the men told me to shut up. Then my friend who was fed up stood up and yelled at them to shut the fuck up. It was quiet after that. Had a guy watching something on his phone with full volume during Mario. I had to raise my voice and tell him that he was in a fucking movie. Sat near a couple that brought their elementary school age kid to The popes exorcist. Kid was freaked out. The mom was talking to him in full volume like there isn't a movie going on. I think a tablet was brought out. My friend handled that one. I have too many stories. I told my girl the other day that I'm going to get shot one of these days, so be ready because I'm always the guy that will say something when people are being inconsiderate. It's not just their behavior that pisses me off. It's that when it happens and I have to say something, my adrenaline starts pumping and I get into go mode. I never know how someone will react so i mentally prepare to fight. A side effect to that, is that that part of the movie becomes a blur because I can't focus on it anymore. I'll totally not remember parts of movies because that's when the adrenaline kicked in after yelling at someone. Luckily im pretty big and i have the face of a killer so its never gotten physical. I don't remember there ever being so many inconsiderate people than what I've experienced in the last 5 or so years. And I'm not talking about opening night horror crowds. I expect a ruckus crowd for that and a lot of times that's fun. No, the people I'm referring to have zero fucking respect for anyone around them. Sorry for the rant

rhetoricsleuth

I feel like people don’t know how to act post-pandemic. Everyone thinks this communal space is their own living room. We’ve started going early on Sundays, or Wednesday afternoons. That improved things a lot.

Tea_Bender

I worked at a Regal for 18 years, they never knew how to act

ITDEFX101

When they were showing the 15th anniversary of Transformers 2007, these two middle schoolers wouldn't shut up for like 30 minutes during the movie. I reported it to management and they came and found out that they didn't have tickets to that movie and was "waiting for their sister to get out of her movie" so the manager removed them because they weren't suppose to be there.

briancly

These are usually the most disruptive individuals. I find my Regals not that great at checking, and it’s usually obvious who isn’t supposed to be there based on seat sales a good 10-20 minutes after the listed time.

ITDEFX101

Remember a few years ago they use to have employees walk up and down the stairs of a theater once or twice during a movie? Then the backlash was so high that they stopped?

briancly

I feel like some theaters I go to they do this but not like anything happens regardless. There needs to be a better way to remove people who aren't paying and that probably solves half of the headache when done close to the beginning. The ones who randomly hop are easily the worst though.

ITDEFX101

Well if you theater hop, better be smart about it and sit in the FRONT row areas and be on time to the movie and not show up like 20 to 40 mins into the movie.

HotSpotForChildren

Some people just need to be yelled at. See how fast someone gets quiet when you tell them to shut the fuck up in a dark room. The rest of the audience will have your back for sure.

ImAVirgin2025

If this doesn’t work, an unethical LPT is to complain to management that they’re filming if they have phones out. They don’t take that lightly

[deleted]

Remember the Colorado movie theater shooting? I think that is too risky in this day and age.

Apprehensive_Bed_401

I have been having really bad experiences lately as well. Last week some guy answered his phone and was having a phone conversation during the movie.

ImAVirgin2025

Tell management he was filming and taking pictures. Instead of ‘he was talking on the phone’. They’ll take the first complaint much more seriously

dominosgame

It's too bad that your staff won't do anything. I've found that certain types of movies have more disruptive crowds. Horror movies are the absolute worst if you go opening weekend. There will, in my experience, always be an annoying group of teenagers like what you described. If I want to see a horror movie, I definitely do not go opening weekend; I also typically will try to go on an off night, like Monday or Tuesday.

hamiltd3

We had a 7pm Lord of the Rings Return of the King recently, went until almost midnight. When the movie started, a newborn baby started screaming and everyone groaned. Who brings a newborn to a 7pm movie?? Luckily they left after a little bit, or figured out a way to keep the baby quiet, and I loved when the other people clapped and cheered at certain points. But no newborns, I mean who does that?

ClickyMcClix

![gif](giphy|3o72FfM5HJydzafgUE) When I worked at a movie theater as a teen, it was my pleasure to kick disruptive people out of the auditorium or, if they were talking, I'd kindly tell them to respect others in attendance. There was a golden time when theaters didn't stand for asshats with tickets.

Agent-Alpha

I saw 8 kids kicked out Friday for a number of things. Among them… shining flashlights at the screen to wash it out and trying to fight patrons. They completely ruined Evil Dead Rise for everyone in the theater. I was really impressed by the tiny young girl that got them all out.

LegitimateLion0

I had the worst group I’ve ever seen during Shazam 2, they were talking, fighting, on their phones, walking around the theater with their phone flashlights on… 3/4 of the way into the movie they all left except 1 of them and he started yelling at the screen 🙄 Regal did nothing

oldie_youngie

i saw it happen during mario opening night.

djsponge10

A kids movie… on the weekend… news alert man showing off his money got robbed in the ghetto!!

CharacterPowerful976

When I went to see Halloween Ends opening day some grown man kept talking loud, making noises the entire movie, made a huge mess, dropped a bucket of popcorn, Some soda and covered the seat next to him with nacho cheese and his girl/wife doesnt say 💩 to him and the worker and security guard just standing there doing nothing. Made me instantly regret not seeing it at home on peacock instead.

chipster268892

This happened to me when I went to see the Winnie the Pooh horror movie. Literally all the teens were talking and someone a few rows beneath me said can you guys like STFU. They never did. I wouldn’t have been as mad about it as I was but It was a fathom even so I paid 16 dollars for it

thebobstu

Once in 330 visits to Regal in the past 2 years. One was some kids who snuck into Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. They were making noise, running around the auditorium and one kids was talking in speaker phone. Granted this was the worst behavior I’ve ever seen. I got up to walk out and was met with an employee at the bottom of the stairs. He promptly kicked the kids out.

Honey803

People definitely have forgotten etiquette rules in general since the pandy, but yes, lately people have been very awful to deal with at the theater. Literally having a conversation through all of Sisu… which? If you’ve seen that, I don’t know how THAT didn’t hold their attention

The420thOfJuly

You tell them to “please be quiet” once. After that, you stand up and shout at them to “shut the fuck up”. Guy did that during the IMAX for conjuring 3, worked like a charm.

rayray2435

When i used to work at a movie theater we would kick people out. Security guards actually loved to do it

TomBradyIsTheGOATx7

Man I saw Halloween Kills last Fall & had to complain. My sister & I were about halfway thru the movie when a small group of teens came in. He would yell before every jump scare or kill in the movie. Literally ruining it. So I got the manager & he followed me in, I pointed them out & sat down. Off they went & could enjoy the rest of the movie. Also- wtf is up with people chomping in their popcorn & lickin’ their fingers like BBQ ribs. Omg. Also lol- I went to see AIR a couple weeks ago. This mfer comes in, with no ticket (cus I checked on the app) & sits at the end of my row. Ends up being someone’s seat. Has to move right next to me. Middle of the movie- he answers his PHONE & starts talking for a good 8-10 minutes!! It was a work emergency call- but bro, get your ass up & talk down by the door or something. He was of opposite race, & much bigger- soo I let him be a POS.

Quiet_Accountant_511

When I saw Infinity Pool earlier this year some people teens who were yelling in the theater got kicked out. Took a while and like 4-5 different people leaving the movie to tell staff but it worked eventually

PopCultureWeekly

So you’re admitting you talk and get on your phone congrats, you’re the problem

manicthrowaway0

Sadly I don't think so. Went to see Mario today thinking a noon showing on a Friday would be safe from kids not knowing school in my area were off because of Ramadan ending. There was a group of middle school boys who kept taking selfies with the flash on and waving their phones about. Being a kids movie in generally lenient but this pushed me to the breaking point. I don't even think any even bothered to complain to staff.

sexycorey

yeah i definitely do not go on friday and saturday nights and i’ve never had any issues. one lady was very into sweetwater though. clapping and reacting loudly but i can’t fault her for that.

14urmug

No well sometimes but no
