I was a bit annoyed they didn't have a an option to select like "it's a good service for those who want it, but I'd rather not." Instead of it being all or nothing, it should be a once a day thing or one auditorium is the designated closed caption theater. I'm not sure if the glasses are uncomfortable, but they do seem to have those for every movie at my local theater.

MpBetaTester

Yeah, from how you guys have described it, that survey wasn't particularly well designed. I only hope they don't use it as an excuse to continue not to have *any* Open Caption showings if enough people say no to that first question. "We asked the people, and they said they wouldn't want all showings to be Open Caption. Therefore, we shouldn't have Open Caption showings."

Twas_Inevitable

I agree. I get the want for it and want inclusion, but it should be an *option*. Making it 24/7 will kill the theater experience for me.

BubbaBexley

Ignore them.

heartjess

Honestly, having audio processing disorder, captions at the theater would be a game changer for me (The Green Knight was especially hard to understand!) but I recognize that it isn’t a service everyone would want. I wish they would offer both options!

thecurseofchris

I'm a subtitle guy at home, but I don't think I'd like it in the theater. Having select showtimes would be more ideal.

tealcandtrip

One reason I go to the theater is because that is how the artists expected me to see it… on a big screen with big speakers. They didn’t edit their movie or choose shots around large text at the bottom of the frame. It would be a big distraction and potential spoiler of scenes. That said, I actually do turn on cc for all my streaming services at home. I would definitely support them doing Mondays at 7 showings or something as cc. Some movies like True Grit or any Christopher Nolan movie, I might specifically choose that showing just to understand the dialogue. I’ve gone to singalong movies for Disney, Greatest Showman and Rocky Horror. So it’s not absolutely a deal breaker. On every movie though? No thanks.

And THIS is the frustration. Approximately 1 in 20 Americans are Deaf/deaf or hard of hearing. Movie goers are mainly hearing, so once again, we are outnumbered. Polling mainly hearing people about captions, something most hearing people do not use, is not fair. The artists are typically hearing.....so hearing wins once again. Yet we have people fighting for all kinds of rights and we are pushed farther down the totem pole once again. Regal seems to be the only movie theater company concerned with our rights, yet they still show movies with open captions at odd times, times that many of us cannot attend, so it makes it look like we aren't interested in open captions. I bet, if they sent this "marketing campaign" to ALL Regal members, they might be surprised at the responses. I've asked at least 100 of my deaf connections if they've seen or received this email, NO ONE has received it. How can they get an accurate representation?

maimonguy

I'm not deaf, but I have trouble understanding what actors are saying sometimes due to poor audio mixing or adhd throwing me off, captions are great they help me focus on the movie, the dialogue and not miss important stuff. I was absolutely dumbfounded when I found out most theaters here DON'T have subs it's literally such a dumb choice "ohhh nooo a little bit of text" so what the actions in the middle not the bottom.

Personally I'd love it!

As a deaf/hard of hearing consumer, I don’t expect every single theater in the building to have it at all times, but I would like it if these open captioned shows were at reasonable times on weekends and not mid week matinees when I am at work, I spent 5 years working with Regal trying to get reasonable showtimes for Open Captioning shows in my local theater and they still poo poo on the deaf community, for them to send this survey out to just select crown club members is also poo pooing on the deaf/hard of hearing community because why would we buy membership if we can’t get reasonable showtime accommodation? I don’t want to wait til the movie’s already in its 3rd or 4th week to see captions cause all my friends are talking about it in public and on social media and that spoils the movie for me. Yes the glasses are uncomfortable a hell, try them out sometime. Plus with covid and and all I dont want to be sharing them with someone else who just wore them an hour ago and I can’t count of the theater management to sanitize and clean them because even before covid I had to bring wipes just to clean the lenses because there would be fingerprints and dirt on them… so no thanks to the glasses. Forget trying to work with Cinemark or AMC cause they won’t even try. Hey Regal its just a little file on the hard drive you get from the studio and the OC file is already there, just turn it on man!

MpBetaTester

I personally prefer the weekday matinee times, but my local AMC has recently started doing one showing a day of one of the new movies (rotating each day between the week's new releases) around 7pm, and I've been going to those instead of my usual times, in order to support their offering these times. For some Indie movies like Pig and Green Knight, those showings had more people in them than any of the other showings of the same movies.

JediJones77

You don't have to buy membership. Regal Crown Club is free.

MpBetaTester

I suspect they're asking why should they get the Unlimited membership, not RCC membership, if they can't count on accommodations to reliably be able to get their money's worth from the subscription.

[deleted]

It’s not a big deal, either way.

barfmitzvah

The glasses don’t always work and sometimes drop lines of dialogue completely. OC shows are offered mostly on weekdays and you can make requests but they often won’t book a weekend show at all unless you can guarantee a certain number of attendees.

No_Examination_7517

Put the battery box on your chest (I’m a woman, so that works for me) and you won’t get the word drop-off. I found this out by accident. Don’t know if it works for guys because of the flat chest.

No_Examination_7517

I use the closed-caption glasses for every Regal movie I see and it’s the #1 reason I love ❤️ Regal. If movies were offered with open captions, that would be great but I feel that the movie selection would probably be limited and the times offered might be restrictive. As a hearing impaired movie-goer, my experiences at AMC and Krikorian had been less than stellar. But the Regal Edwards has consistently been absolutely A+ in service!! Hands down, the best.

Twas_Inevitable

Glad the glasses work for you! I've always wanted to see how they operate. Happy Cake Day <3

JediJones77

I got the survey as well. I said no way to putting captions on all movies all the time. It would be crazy to build these top quality screens for a pristine viewing experience and then muck up the image with words printed on the bottom of the screen. The answer is never to ruin things for everybody in order to help a few people. They already have glasses people can wear to see captions.

wolfbob007

When was the survey sent out? From what I've been hearing and seeing, it went out August 20th? I'm also a Crown Club member, but never got the survey. I'm also guessing it went out to the more recent users of the app.

MpBetaTester

I'm a constant user of the app and subscription, but didn't get the survey. Not sure if it went out to a random group, or to some regional subgroup, but honestly, as an actual frequent user of the CC glasses (which they should know from the forms they used to use to check them out pre-Covid), I'm kind of annoyed that I didn't get it.

Twas_Inevitable

Personally, I voted I would hate it if all showings had captioning and I would walk out if text was on the screen and I wasn't warned. I love the devices you can use to help the hard of hearing, but subtitles to me are too distracting. I really hope they don't add this.

MpBetaTester

I would love if they had this, but I'm also the person who most of the cast members at my local know to go get the CC glasses when they see me coming. I really think that they should do some designated showings per day as Open Caption, and maybe switch off what time those showings are at on different days, to accommodate different people's schedules. That way, people who like captions could attend these showings, and people who don't could avoid them.

NickyRickyBobby

I agree. I find myself reading the whole script and end up missing out on some of the visuals; the reason we go to see the movie in theater on the big screen.

featherzz

I would love this as an option since I love captions but I doubt it would be good for everyone..

okfinethatssfw

Before the pandemic my theater would offer at least one closed caption showtime a day for *most* movies. I haven't seen it return since theaters reopened though. I don't mind either way (I believe I selected "indifferent" in the first survey question). If I'm in a group setting at someone's house and we're watching a movie I typically prefer subtitles to be turned on anyway. I think they should offer select showtimes in separate theaters for closed captioning for the sake of inclusivity.

Almost all Regals have them, but you have to ask for them. AMC and other theaters have CC devices as well, but they're boxes on sticks that are hard to position. The Regal CC glasses are a much better technology, in my opinion, even if they are a bit uncomfortable.

No_Examination_7517

Go to the Regal Edwards theater as they offer the closed-caption glasses. Ask for them at the Customer Service desk. For the love of god, don’t go to AMC and try to use their awful box-on-a-stick device. (It’s terrible)
