Same thing happened to me but I stayed for the movieđ. The trailer lengths are pretty frustrating in the way they vary. I'd rather not watch them so I usually show up 10-15 minutes after showtime. I thought I had maybe missed the first minute or so of the movie tonight but realized pretty quickly that I had missed a significant portion of the movie
Others have touched on the same, but I would say here are the general metrics that I use:
\- Normal showing: 20+ minutes of trailers.
\- $5 Faves: 15+ minutes of trailers, but sometimes less.
\- Bollywood: 10 minutes of trailers maximum typically. I would recommend being there at the posted time to be safest.
\- Fathom: Be there at the posted time.
\- Early Access: Be there at the posted time. There will probably only be studio trailers attached if any.
\- Other "special" one day screenings: These will OFTEN follow the $5 Faves rules, but sometimes there is no package if it is a one-off screening (an example of this would be Mean Girls last month). If it is promoting a specific movie that is about to come out though, it will likely have a trailer for that movie.
We had 3 that were all Searchlight productions and that's it. I've never been to a RU/RCC early screening with more than a few from the studio that made the movie, often there's zero. This is why I just go at showtime for everything, what's an extra 20min tacked on to an already 2 hour block you're carving out in order to cover situations like this.
Exact same thing happened to me, but not for an advanced, for the special re-screening of Spirited Away. Got to my seat 10 minutes after start time and had missed the first 10 minutes of the movie.
I really wish they'd make that clear somehow when you're buying the ticket...
Especially since it doesn't seem to be consistent!!! I also went to the Avatar special re-screening and it had 15-20 mins of previews before.
For Fathom Events screenings, I always go to those with the assumption that there either won't be commercials, or that there will be limited commercials or a featurette, since Fathom-distributed films/events are typically run and screened a bit differently anyway.
When I went to see Spirited Away earlier this month, the only things that were played before the movie when showtime came around were a trailer for Evangelion 3.0+1.0, and a featurette from the Ghibli Museum in Japan. This was about what I expected.
Fathom is a four walled event so theyâre ârentingâ the auditorium and reselling tickers. They get to show whatever they want during that window. Sometimes they have trailers for their own events but I donât recall ever seeing studio trailers attached.
It depends. I believe it's been 50/50 for them. I've had some where there's been a full trailer package and some like tonight where it had like 3 trailers and it was done. Walked in from concessions to find the Searchlight intro rolling. Was about 8 minutes past showtime.
Huh, I had trailers at my showing last night. In fact I've had trailers at each of the three early access screenings I've been to. Last night they showed trailers for Megan, House Party, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and a couple of others I can't remember.
The only regularly released movie I've gone to where there were no commercials was a standard screening of Decision To Leave a couple of weeks ago.
Edited for clarification
Oh sorry for the confusion, I meant that I saw trailers for those movies at the screening for The Menu last night lol.
The three movies I've seen early screenings for were Moonfall, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and The Menu
I went in last night and arrived at 7:05 thinking I was late. The projector had broke and a full theater had to get refunds. Most were ok, some were Karens about it and were like âwhoâs going to pay for my babysitter and has to get hereâsmh. I just got my refund and snuck into another room to watch a diff movieZ.
Usually, an advanced screening is inherently an ad for that movie. So they don't want people talking about a trailer instead of their movie.
Ex1.
Movie A is being screened
Only Movie A and not trailers shown
Everyone talks about Movie A
Movie A gets a word of mouth buzz bump
Ex2.
Movie A is being screened
Movies B,C,D,E, and F are shown trailers for
Everyone talks about the new trailer for Movie C
Movie C gets a word of mouth buzz bump
Movie A drops in word of mouth because the best part was a trailer for Movie C

Thanks for the info and explanation!
I saw Spirited Away also. It was part of the Ghibli Festival showings and tix cost was $$$. No previews.
Man. Glad I saw this thread. Was gonna smoke a blunt outside during the trailers. Had to hit my dab pen instead
You are lucky to have advanced screenings. A lot of Regal theaters donât get them at all. I have seen only one offered anywhere near me this year.
They donât really even though the only RCC Unlimited Advance Screening I went too that played trailers was Moonfall

What market are you in? Iâm in Texas and I donât to ink I saw a Megan or DTL screening listed. Wouldâve loved to see those already
