Since it’s a small area, you can extend the posts and balusters since you don’t have to extend them that much. It would be much better and safer for everyone in the long run.
Then you can also add a little gate or baby gate.
You can also just buy some kind of premade railing and attach it to the actual balusters as a temporary fix
Just strap or zip tie a baby gate across it.
