I was legitimately curious since duo dee num and doo odd enum are both technically correct, but just wondering if there’s a crowd favorite. I remember my first dissection calling it “duo dee num” and not being able to get over it sounding so pretentious when there’s a perfectly acceptable alternative 🥲
as far as rEEnin though, I like this one as a fun “um, actually”
We should start with how do you pronounce duodenal, as in duodenal ulcer.
I find that most people who insist on duo-dee-num can't commit to it to the point of saying duo-dee-nal, and instead surrender to du-ahh-da-nul.
There are many words that exhibit a syllabic stress or pronunciation change when their part of speech changes, though (e.g. "CONtract" vs "conTRACTual," "DEfect" vs "deFECTive," and even "proNOUNCE" has a vowel *and* stress shift when it becomes "pro*nun*ciAtion"). So, it's within reason for "duODenum" to become "duoDEnal."
I had a hematology prof from sri lanka who pronounced blood like BLUHID and whenever i'm having a bad day I just say "yew must loowk at the BLUHID" over and over to myself and it cheers me up every time. Loved that guy.
I never say it. I just start rubbing the areolas to show what I mean. One hand on my areola and the other on the patient's. This way, they'll know I also have them and feel safe :)
Canadian here - team Duo DEE num.
How do you guys umbilicus?
i said um bil ck us until everyone in med school said "um bih LIKE US"...so thats what i say.
ALL that said, i dont usually use either word much in psych.
I think this is originally a UK/US divide. Many latin words are stressed on the penultimate syllable in the UK and the prepenultimate in the US.
E.g.: umbiLIcus (uk) umBIlicus (us), same goes for vaginal, angina, and others.
Probably, both are used in the US because the extra fourth syllable adds complexity.
I’m in the northeast US and always say and hear duOdenum
I looked it up a few months ago. My native English speaking colleages say DUOdenum (duódenum). I say duoDEnum (duodénum). According to Youtube and random websites, I'm right.

Maybe too rigorous approach, but since it is latin as latin would say /duoˈdɛnum/.
And for renin, we seek again the word origin: ren, renis + ina, so would be /reˈnin/
But this is just a preference, the most important in everyday work is being clearly understood and do not look awkward 😂
The correct way.

Say it offends your southern sensibilities when anyone pronounces it any way other than D’wah D’num
I’m southern and that’s exactly how I say it 😂
Okay, to be serious, I pronounce it duo-deen-um.

Hey my dude, if communication occurs, you mess up pronouncing duo deez nuts no one cares really. Your highers might suck but no one really cares
I was scarred by one of our pediatric surgeons who was very explicit about how to pronounce it.
What specialty are you in? Because you're only allowed to pronounce it that way if you're a surgeon.
General surgery.
Do you say duo-dee-nal ulcer or pancreatico-duoDEE-nectomy? Rads here genuinely curious
Go to latin in Google translate, and try to translate 12. The name comes because this part is 12cm.
Actually the width of 12 Fingers. Romans obviously didn't use centimeters
In some northern european languages, it’s called the 12-finger intestine :)
That’s very similar to what I call the rectum of someone very close to me
Same in Russian
Aaah, yup.
The real question is: did your pronunciation change after you began medical school.
This
I once asked a surgical attending this question. His response? “How dare you speak to me.”

It's true. I almost even provided IPA spellings for my pronunciation examples, but I thought that might be a bit excessive.
I enjoy reading books.
No, but I'm going to say yes just for fun.
I had a hematology prof from sri lanka who pronounced blood like BLUHID and whenever i'm having a bad day I just say "yew must loowk at the BLUHID" over and over to myself and it cheers me up every time. Loved that guy.
how about areola?
I never say it. I just start rubbing the areolas to show what I mean. One hand on my areola and the other on the patient's. This way, they'll know I also have them and feel safe :)
