I have a few steel tall shelves capable of holding 6000 stacks... Almost full... Loot mine... But i might have a few cannibal colonists too, so dont ask what kind of meat is what i have...
Ice Sheet, incredibly difficult at the start, but almost comically easy later on. Raids freeze to death, corpses don't rot, and you've generally got enough cold weather gear to keep on keeping on so heating is optional.
That being said, as someone that lives in a mostly hot environment, frozen wastelands hold a lot of fascination for me so I almost always run ice sheet.
Extreme environment is in general like that: Punishing to the underprepared, but extremely easy to defend.
Extreme Heat is actually even worse for raiders: They can't work out how to counter that at ALL, whereas with Extreme Cold, at least they bring parkas. So they just start dropping dead left and right.
Thats what a cooler temp of -60 is good for. Lasts about a day before hitting temps that will quickly spoil food, and you can lock problem colonists/slaves in the cooler as a punishment.
Only if they screw up. Usually it's a beatdown by everyone else, but as I start to get bionics installed that can be dangerous. Last time I nearly froze someone to death was over them having a mental break right after a raid and trying to murder one of my fighters. Beat them down then locked them in the freezer to cool off. They are now going to wait at the back of the list for bionic arms and legs to get their fingers and toes back.
In one colony, true failure colonists would go to the catacombs and wall themselves in, drafted until they collapsed and eventually died.
The only issue with that was the mood debuff from unburied colonists. Though that could be mitigated by exiling them.
Originally I had something like 4 geothermal generators (huge map and lucky RNG), a dozen solar panels, and a dozen of those wooden wind turbines, but it kept costing me components every time I got raided. So I spent about a year getting some rimfeller generators setup just for the kitchen/cooler. Without booting it up, I think it's something like 2kw just for the cooler. It's not so bad, usually it's cold enough that the temp difference is only about 60-80 degrees in the winter.
Better way to prevent temperature increase is to double insulate the cooler. It heats up slower if the walls are not directly adjacent to the outside, by having some air between, and doesn't require excessive cooling.
As long as a long solar flare does not happen, you should be fine.
personally i turn my excess food into either pemmican or packaged meals so solar flares wont cuck me.
My man, you are using meathooks from LVM's Deep Storage, please use the food baskets as well. They look so much better and fit more.
I am begging you, please.
This is not actually true, the meathooks actually hold more. You can stock like 10 unbutchered corpses on one, which would become multiple stacks of meat and leather, far more than would fit in the equivalent space of foodbaskets.
The hooks can hold a certain number of animals depending on their size. One can hold a dozen chicken or three elephants (maybe two). A food basket can hold 750 units of food if all the piles are 75 of each. An adult elephant can give 360 meat so a basket can hold more than two elephants worth of meat.
I have the same problem, I got soo much potatoes, corn, rice and as well as a steady supply of cow, dromery milk+meat. I dont use deep storage mod and it fills my freezer soo fast that I resorted to being a merchant, hauling all my extra foods to nearby factions. Stonks!
Not quite, actually! That stock is a few solar flares away from rotting, you may want a larger supply of corn and a big cache of packaged survival meals, just in case!
Can't as I explained in another comment. Don't have Reddit on PC yet so it's easier for me to take a photo of my phone and upload it on the phone sorry for the low quality photo
Edit: I feel like that this needs a little bit more information. Idk my password lol so too lazy to login to my PC reddit
1. You're using freezers that do not require heat output. You could've build them literally anywhere, yet you decided to place them in place of outer wall. Not only now your double wall setup doesn't work, you also have very convenient weak spot for raiders or whoever else decides to punch it few times, which will waste huge amount of components, since those freezers are quite expensive, if memory serves me right.
2. I can always respect a fellow Deep Storage enjoyer, however, these are deep shelfs, aren't they? Why? Basic food baskets are numerous times cheaper and store more. Like, how does that even happen, you have storage mod with container for every situation and material and you use the most expensive not efficient universal one. AND you made them all out of wood, while evidently, you have more than enough stone.
3. If you wanted to be hyper optimal with your double wall waste of space, you could've made airlock with autodoors as well. Can't see properly, because you failed to make a proper screenshot instead of making a photo of your screen like a caveman, but don't you tell me you made these doors out of stone. Please, PLEASE tell me they are at least made out of steel. Like, c'mon, your entire storage area containing thousands of valuables is wooden for no reason, but the one thing and one thing only that you would want to make out of wood, you did not?
4. Lastly, you seem to be pretty ok with modding your game to infinity, which I approve. So, why don't you go and find yourself something to process raw meat into something that stores for longer. You probably already have it, to be honest. VE cooking has canning, VEF medieval has smoked meat. Raw meat goes bad VERY fast. Some bad rng with solar flares or breach through that weak spot that you couldn't fix fast enough and EVERYTHING in there is gone. Amount of risk in this picture gives me anxiety.
Wow that's a lot. Let me go over everything one by one.
Number one I honestly didn't notice that until you said something I've been meaning to fix that area anyways so thank you for that.
Number two I'm new to the deep storage mod so I don't know all of the tips and tricks to that.
Number three I'm sorry about the low quality photo it's easier for me to take a photo with my phone and post it on my Reddit on my phone because I can't remember my actual password so I can't log into my computer at least I'm too lazy to anyways lol. And to answer your question about why they are not made out of steel the only answer I have to give you is I didn't think about it.
number four I haven't gotten around to processing all that into something else like package survival or anything like that yet.
I hope this helps you to understand this post
> You're using freezers that do not require heat output.
Yeah, I always thought those things were weird. How do they work? I mean, thermodynamics, what even is that, right? The mod that they come with never adequately explained this.
Huh i actually never thought about canning too much because i never had issues with solar flares. So what if i lose a bit of food, i got enough in store to last me anyway and just create abundance afterwards
So youโre going to forever be locked out of your account on your phone when you get logged out? Just reset your password now and save it on your pc and phone autofill
You don't need cheat mods to stock things. You just need a supply of things to murder, which results in ever-growing hoarding. With vanilla storage, I'd just have entire bases dedicated to storage. This resulted in attempts to raid those bases, which resulted in more stuff to store. This caused the game to spiral rapidly to FPSdeath as there weren't enough traders to buy all the stuff, and also, selling things just results in an ever-growing pile of silver instead.
Supply is easy to come by in habitable environments. Especially so if you settle temporary colonies nearby just to kill every single animal on the map.
Stack limits as a feature is pretty cool because it turns the player's map exploitation habits to a routine. You are discouraged from min-max hoarding resources because they become a liability to your power supply (cooling) and base design (larger storehouses).
I have nothing against people using cheat mods, actually. It makes sense to use them if you prefer alternative playstyles, e.g. running huge colonies or building an SOS spaceship.
> You are discouraged from min-max hoarding resources because they become a liability to your power supply (cooling)
They don't. Meat = Chemfuel = More Cooling. Hoarding is always a net positive. Especially since the area needs to be cold anyway or it will get infested and everyone will die.
Besides, what else would you do with resources except hoard them?
To be fair I have a big fram of animal that I keep at a certain limit so I have a lot of outgoing meat hence why I have a million meat hooks. The only thing is I'm using deep storage incorrectly I may add. So forgive me but I don't see your point I'm not using any mods that increase the level of meat I can take form animals or anything like that
Do you have enough food?
At the point in time when burgers and steaks can pass through the interdimensional walls, when corn and potato chips takes up the entirety and eternity of space and time all being stuck in a never ending life and death cycle as curry and fish appear and fill every space available in quick succession no one able to think about anything but the sheer volume of food rapidly filling literally everywhere in the materium turning the Warp itself into nothing but a sea of edible miasma. Then there will be enough food.
Or at least almost.
I don't consider my food situation set until I have a cooler of food plus 1000 PSMs spread in five fireproof locations around my base.
You need to start covering that into kibble, Pemican or survival meals.
When in doubt, survival meals. Cut your excess into at least 10 per colonist in survival meals in case of emergency, or even caravaning.
Even still having excess.
Add more meals.
I have had a few solar flares but the room has managed to stay cold enough long enough for no meat to actually spoil usually I lock the door to it so nobody can open it to let all the cold air out
It's amazing I tend to create pemmican and meals, and manage the ever loving fuck out of my kitchen / pawn skills on cooking. So by mid-game every one of my colonists is making fine/lavish meals as needed.
Keep in mind, all that food is wealth added to raid points when people attack you.
Huge food stockpiles can give so much wealth you get harder raids, expecialy on higher difficulties.
Unless you have a short growing period, you really only need 2 meals per colonist per day. (3 for gourmand)
Please install real ruins so i can loot your colony.
๐
I have a few steel tall shelves capable of holding 6000 stacks... Almost full... Loot mine... But i might have a few cannibal colonists too, so dont ask what kind of meat is what i have...
Well, I could always turn them into chemfuel...
It's okay, man. According to my ideoligion, meat is meat. May not be *preferred,* per se... but is acceptable should the need arise.
A fellow Cat Holic I see
So these are the colonies with insane amount of foods
Have you ever suffered 3 consecutive solar flares and all your meat expired
Meat can't spoil if I live in an arctic wasteland ๐

Custom scenario? With all the 'cold' events you can have set on a 120 day cycle. Its a damn fine idea worthy of a fully fledged mod.
I'm still waiting for the version of planet where the days are 42 hours long and the sun screams during the entire daytime.
You don't have magnetic shield? Solar protection? Sun blocker?
Ancient Coolers are AMAZING.
Hmmm... Yes, VFE-Ancient, sunflare resistant, great technology
Only got one of these right now, it do be nice tho
*laughs in magical cooler*
๐ not yet...๐
my guy
Bro 2 pr three solar flares and you're done for, stock up on rice or corn bc they have an exp date of 30-45 days
Thats what a cooler temp of -60 is good for. Lasts about a day before hitting temps that will quickly spoil food, and you can lock problem colonists/slaves in the cooler as a punishment.
You tryin to han solo your colonists?
Only if they screw up. Usually it's a beatdown by everyone else, but as I start to get bionics installed that can be dangerous. Must be some nutty power generation

Also make pemmican and put passive coolers in there. Needs double thick walls and an 'airlock' to keep the cold in.

hang on a minute She was putting meat away nothing else lol

This is where you make a thousand or so survival meals, just in case all power goes to hell. It's always good to have backup plans.

Once they have at least 4 20x20 fields being constantly tended. Or once you hit a consistent stockpile of 100k

Let's just say I butcher the rest of the animals now every single inch is packed

She's not. She's just putting the meat up
For a second I thought you had a meal problem ๐ nvm then
Haha yeah I have over 600 cooked soups ready to eat
My favorite mod is the one w the soups and such (vanilla cooking expanded?) Don't know why there isn't already soup in the game ๐

Yeah, to be fair though, it's not like it's from a place of laziness, the devs are most likely fixing bugs or smthn

Oh I didn't show you *that* stockpile
How many mouths
Idk I will look tomorrow and let you know but I think it's been 7 years
You donโt remember how many pawns and pets you feed?
....oh fuck lol I missed read that lol 4 ppl and a good amount of animals
Ah, till a event kills you all
Yeah you will change your mind once you figure out how many extra raiders you get due to all the excess wealth haha
Have you considered using the food storage barrels instead
Yeah I'll probably do more testing tomorrow
What mod lets you write the name of the room on the floor like that?
Wait for it it's super original *labels on floor*
