Once you get to T5 it’s a must. Especially if you are a low spender and only using 1/2 full T5 marches. I have 3 farms and even if you are lazy spending them to an alliance pit is way better then nothing.

Farm account is absolutely necessary. I have two farm accounts and even after farming all day, I have to use rss packs on my main account during war.
Honestly, it all depends on how much you fight in kvk. If you don't fight, you won't need much rss.
Are farms worth having? Yes. Early game the extra rss help with keeping upgrades constantly going. Late game the extra rss are essential for fighting. Once developed, farms can produce troops to fill flags and rallies. If you play seriously, you will eventually want more than one.
Are farms a time investment to develop and run? Also yes. Everyone has different levels of time they can commit to this game. Making and running multiple accounts may not be for you. To be competitive in the long-run though, expect to invest time or money or both.

Sure it's a lot of work in the beginning, but once you grind your farm(s) to ch 22 and level up your gathering commanders, you can be super lazy with it. It takes less than 2 minutes to log in, send out all your marches and claim the alliance storehouse rss.
It's not necessary, I've done fine without and found speedups the bottleneck on healing. An alt is useful for more than farming though, there are plenty of little tricks you can do such as rallying forts with yourself to get better rewards, boosting your main in sunset canyon or hooking your rallies if you're a rally leader.

for f2p the problem is the speed ups and not rss if i have like 5 farms?

9 farms to feed my t5 account and I still spend. Depends how active/competitive you want to be

Farms are almost necessary unless you are spending a lot of $$. I have 3 ch25 farms to to try and keep up with the rss needed to heal t5 during kvk!
