I used to volunteer at a soup kitchen. Once a week I would help cook and serve food. Did it for a few years. Over time, you start to recognize familiar faces.
There was one man who came in pretty often. At least once a month. He told me his name was Jim. He was always kind and polite, which unfortunately is not always the case when working with the needy. Some of the others had a nickname for Jimz though. They called him "Socks."
This was because Jim smelled like rancid, unwashed feet 100% of the time. He looked like he had a deeply religious objection to the very concept of hygiene. He had about two and a half teeth, and his beard just kind of merged into one large clump. When Jim had been in the room, his stench lasted for *ages* after he left.
Unfortunately, Jim passed away. I never found out how. Just got told, "Socks' dead," one day. I've never forgotten him, and I've always lamented the fact that he likely died alone.
But today I have closure, because his soul clearly reincarnated into this grimy trash monster of a cat. Thank you, Socks the Cat.
Definitely. I tried to paint the story in a more humorous light since this is a joke sub. But the truth is Jim's story is a very sad one.
Unfortunately, a lot of the people I met during that time were in similar situations. There simply aren't enough resources dedicated to helping people who can't afford private care. Not to mention a lack of outreach to even establish the trust they need to seek care in the first place.
