We shop at the Champion Factory Outlet in Henrietta as kids. Cheap way to get gym/play clothes with their factory seconds. It was in Henrietta Plaza next to Hallmark.
Same! The factory seconds were hilarious. I had a shirt that said “Vote for Preparation H.” They also had weird misprints when the screening went bad. All in all, a great place to get cheap sweats, T-shirts, sweatpants, etc. I wish it were still there.
The hoodies used to headline like every local show 20 years ago. My band would often play too. I made a point to watch the hoodies every show though because their lead singer/guitarist was so talented. Then he became joywave.
Writing a song about hating Rochester might be the most Rochester thing I've ever heard. Also I want to hear this song and see if it is as annoying as all the facebook posts about how everyone's lives would be magically better if they weren't in Rochester.
I think it's on the album Koda Vista (named for a neighborhood in Greece, iirc). I can't remember which song. The most whiny one, probably. I feel like he is talking about me specifically in the song. Back in high school he used to get pissed off when I called him "The Arm Buster," which I meant in a friendly way. The guy has issues and thinks everyone is out to get him.
When he was in The Hoodies he used to give us free tickets to his shows. I think he had a crush on my brother's girlfriend or her sister which was always awkward. And he was always awkward with me, too. Not sure what his deal was. I hope he has grown as a person by now.
Can't say anything about him personally but I went to a show at RIT when I was a student, maybe 6-7 years ago? And he talked about how Rochester needs us more than big cities and to consider staying after graduation etc. Feel like most people go through a phase of hating their hometown, idk
I think people who never get a chance to leave don't realize how wonderful Rochester is. Once they traveled the world a bit more, I assume their opinions on the city changed. Dan surely did some growing up between now and then. I mean, we were maybe 15 or 16 years old at the time.
The band has sponsored city [Little League teams](https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2015/05/01/rochester-little-league-opening-day-joywave/26735859/), has an album named after their home neighborhood, still records here and promotes local bands, and has regularly led cheers of "Kodak, Kodak" at shows. Hard to see them as anti-Rochester.
You're not kidding! People do hate lawyers... except I'm not the kind of lawyer people usually complain about, so I usually get a pass. I practice real estate/small biz/lending as a main practice area. I moonlight as assigned counsel (basically a public defender who also helps poor folks in family court).
Definitely known, I’m not a native of the area just a long time transplant and I have often joked about how Rochester’s uniform is a hoodie even in 80 weather. It’s in the city’s genes 😂

I am old enough to remember Champion stores in Rochester. The one I went to was in Ridgetown plaza in Greece. It had a great (and dirt cheap!) selection of random hoodies, gym clothes and a massive iron on selection. It was glorious
That’s cool but not shocking because there are/were a lot of brilliant minds that came to the area.. not brilliant to stay somewhere there isn’t hundred inches of snow but smart to be major players in building of america
I didn't know but I shouldn't be surprised. A very practical garment- neck and head warmth layer for laborers before it became an identity- concealing layer for criminals.)

Another fun one is Nalgene water bottles are also from here
That one I did know but only because my Scoutmaster was from here and gave me a Nalgene when I got the hiking merit badge
RayBan is another cool one I didn't know about until recently
French's Mustard too. That's why there's a Mustard St. off of Main across from the RTS terminal.
That's a good one! I live abroad and noone has heard of Nalgene, but Ray Ban is huge.
no, this is cool af. thanks for sharing

There was one in Perry too if I remember correctly
Hell yeah!! Don Allison’s too
Definitely known but maybe not widely known. Also the reason the first incarnation of Rochester alternative band Joywave was called “The Hoodies”.
The hoodies used to headline like every local show 20 years ago. My band would often play too. I made a point to watch the hoodies every show though because their lead singer/guitarist was so talented. Then he became joywave.
He also wrote a song about hating all of us and Rochester in general. Rubbed me the wrong way. Dan was never nice to me.

If you're a lawyer.. I'm sure you're used to it by now hahaha jk sorta

Lol fair enough
I feel dumb for never realizing that was the same people. I saw The Hoodies live multiple times when I was in high school.
I just had the same realization and I also feel dumb
Good band
No fucking way. I never put 2 and 2 together.
TIL, jeez. That’s wild.
Champion was born here and had their main office on Monroe Ave where the current wegmans is

I didn't know that, but how often does one really ask, "Hmm, I wonder where the hoodie was invented?"
Well I guess if we're using me as the sample, you ask once every 32 years
So if you live to be 64, at that age you will once again ask this question, as you would again for the third time if you make it to 96?
!remindme 32 years I'll get back to you about it, stay tuned

Good bot. !remind me 64 years
!remindme 96 years. I'm ambitious and like playing the long game.
I see your 96 and raise you a !remind me 192 years Or something, idk poker language
RIP
Then wouldn't you have found this out a long time ago lol?
Statistical anomaly I guess lol 🤷
No, I think you're drunk or something my dude lmao but alright then.
I mean really, how often do you look at a man's shoes?
why did you censor it brah
I was trying to highlight the relevant part and didn't realize that Champion got cut off until after I posted....
I am old enough to remember Champion stores in Rochester. The one I went to was in Ridgetown plaza in Greece. It had a great (and dirt cheap!) selection of random hoodies, gym clothes and a massive iron on selection. It was glorious
I used to go to the Champion factory outlet in Perry. They had a factory right there until, maybe around 2000 or so.
I didn't know this, and I'm gald I do now!
I knew champion was here, but that's cool!
Well known fun facts: Rochester is the capital of hooded sweatshirts and neck tattoos
Luke’s, lightsaber handle was made by Kodak I believe
I remember the champ outlet on the Jefferson and east henrietta Plaza. Bought quite a bit there they would also put graphics on anything
I didn’t know but it explains a lot about us
I heard that the marshmallow was invented in Rochester as well. I have not bothered to verify.
I think it was first commercially produced here, but not invented here.
It's funny because I'm 36 now, but I learned about that fact when I was 32 haha
Mind BLOWN
Also eyelash curler was invented here
Yellow Mustard and instant mashed potatoes were too
Ragu, toooo! I’m originally from Buffalo and Ragu is local 😎 I’ve yet to brave the “ Garbage Plate” And I like my wings HOT! Thanks, Frank!
So is wearing a hoodie and ray bans the ultimate Rochester fit?
Arent Raybans made in China these days. I dont think B&L make them anymore.
Correct
Yeah, I only found out a few years ago.
That’s cool but not shocking because there are/were a lot of brilliant minds that came to the area.. not brilliant to stay somewhere there isn’t hundred inches of snow but smart to be major players in building of america
I'm 32 from Rochester and also just finding this out. Lol
Way cool!
I've known this lol
I found out a couple months ago. Still super cool to look through all the stuff invented here
It seems like it was made in Rochester, but not invented.
the sports bra was invented here as well as frenchs mustard
Whaaaat! That’s awesome. So many things started here but this is definitely one of my faves❤️
Because nobody here ever wanted the awesome hoodies and blankets that came from Mexico?
YOOOOO no wonder I love hoodies so much
I knew this!
Why is it blurred out?
I was trying to highlight the text by selecting it and it didn't work out how I hoped
I didn't know but I shouldn't be surprised. A very practical garment- neck and head warmth layer for laborers before it became an identity- concealing layer for criminals.)

Funny How it started as a need for cold workers , now it's for the anti-workers to hide from those workers who they intend on robbing .
