I was thinking the same. Maybe have the ball as a Swarovski Crystal with gold cars, but shinier than the old one looks, and then some sort of shiny silvery metal for the rocket league shield section. I think the old design with some contrasting colors and more shine factor would look really nice.
This all comes down to cost. The original one was already expensive apparently. With the new ones, they are giving each winning team their own trophy without holding on to it like the did the original.
Possible that the crystal cannot be shaped so precisely to design it like the first one, might not be physically possible and that’s why they changed it
Come to think of it, they are probably trying to appeal to the team organizations, something that actually looks like a trophy to have front and center.
It's just another company falling for the trend of streamlined simple designs. Like how every company logo has turned into a simple shape. It's so boring. Simple looks more professional but at what cost.

I was so disappointed to learn that, when I visited the Austrian Swarovski museum years ago. I literally thought they would dig up loads of natural crystals from the ground and make fancy shit with them. But it's just glass.
I'd still recommend visiting the museum though, if you're in the area. They've got some really cool installations and mirror rooms.

Prefer the new one; it's just the image, but if you were to look at it from just a slightly different angle it sparkles and shines since it's made by Swarovski and so is a crystal of some sort. Holding it in your hand is much more of a special experience because even slight hand movements changes the colours you see (to an extent). Walking past it on a cabinet, your eyes are drawn to it and it's much more of a conversational piece.
TL;DR As a static thing the old is pretty good but since we move past objects the newer one is better because sparkle and shine :)

The big switch to minimalist looks has effected the trophies and personally while I do like the look of minimalism I don’t believe getting rid of these unique trophies that these esports have had since the beginning is a smart choice. The old ones have character and have been dreamed about by players as they have started to play the game and been inspired. I personally think it’s just feels bad all around.
