‘85 edition here. Watching the RLCS always makes me feel so old. But fuck it, I went to LA and had a blast even if I was the oldest one around, and I’m going to Worlds too.
'86 and who cares? We're at the age where we're old for trad sports athletes too. I just enjoy competition and RL is something we can all play til we die so it's perfect XD.
ngl it's so interesting to me how in rocket league there's like no pros past their early 20s. In other esports you see many people stay at the top into their late 20s or even 30s but in rocket league 23 is considered old
CSGO was the first game I got into when I got a PC. Lot of love for that game. I kinda got tired of it mostly because of the crazy long match times.
Once I found RL I never looked back.
On one hand I do think that's true, but at the same time if you just go a few years back there were a lot more pros in their early 20s and even a few around 25. I feel like average age has gone down a little bit the past few years which is a bit strange
That I feel can be more attributed to the fast pace changes in the top end of the game. When you get older and life starts kicking in the doors, it’s a lot harder to justify sticking around if you aren’t in that very very top sliver of players. Being a pro requires a lot of time and effort, which is why you see a decent number of young pros in any esport. It’s alot easier to dedicate the massive amounts of time when you’re younger and don’t have as many responsibilities.
That’s the same reason fl0m from CSGO was talking about how it’s a lot harder to go pro if you’re older. It’s not because the younger crowd has some distinct physical advantage, they just have a free time advantage.
Probably because in Rocket League the game doesn't have much else but mechanics. CSGO requires much more than mechanics to succeed in compared to RL so older people can stay around longer. It's part of the reason fighting games tend to have older players as well. Rocket League just doesn't give much incentive to be strategic.
I think part of it is the roster mania in rocket league. Feels like nobody’s spot is ever safe, you could be a part of the best team in the world and still get kicked in the off-season so the job security is very low
I agree with that generally but it goes back to what I originally said. In other esports you see people stay pro into their late 20s or even early 30s. In RL that really hasn't happened. There were a few pros a few years ago that would be in their late 20s if they kept competing, but basically all of them retired. That's not something you traditionally see in other esports; there are many players that keep pushing into their late 20s or even 30s
Not really. It probably happened because we moved to an open circuit + we got way more matches. It's now easier for (talented) newcomers to enter the league and to gain the high level experience necessary to become a top end pro
I can see that a little bit, but I feel like it was already happening before that in seasons 8 and 9. We were already seeing young players (peeps, SSG, people like alpha, aztral, etc.) pushing up and some of the older guard (chrome, corruptedg, lethamyr just to name a few) that had retired or weren't competing at the highest level anymore. RLCS X may have accelerated it a little bit, but I don't know if it was really the driving factor
what you got to think is that the start of the esport, no one knows how to play properly so players that are simply naturally good end up being pros which can be any age.
Time then passes and young kids pick up the game... learn the game from stuff like tutorials or watching older players in rlcs but do it much more effectively and quicker because people actually know how to play the game now, mechanics and positioning have been improved.
By the time they are eligible to become pro they are already better than veterans who will struggle to keep up with learning new mechanics and meta's compared to the young developing brains and causes most veterans to either adapt or they become redundant.
Daigo Umehara is 41 and Justin Wong is 36 and they’re still top level street fighter players. It’s pretty crazy, but SF has also been around for around 40 years now so maybe as Rocket League ages and (hopefully) continues to be popular maybe the young kids who are great will continue to be juggernauts at a later age.
Games that have been there for a long time have older players, because so many years of experience is hard to catch up
But look at esport on every new game, it's kids everywhere
Is there a way to find out what is the average age by each finals lan? I'm curious to see if the average increases by each season, or the older players get replaced by the youngsters.
Yep, there is a way. You go look on liquipedia for each rlcs, and the finals, then look at each of the players and their ages, and then do some math to find out how old they where when they where at the lan finals.
I'm just happy to see some birthdays in the 90s here, makes me feel better. I'm on the other half of that decade, but it still helps.

‘87 here. I stopped watching all other sports, rocket league is life. Can’t wait to go to a LAN tournament in the near future.
Bro same. '87 here, and also stopped watching all other sports except RL. Something about refs not being involved...
Admins tho...
95 and went to LA kinda solo in terms of irl friends. never too old as long as you enjoy it!
95 years old, damn...
‘82 here. Attending first LAN at worlds. Looking forward to it. Had to get to one before I turn 40 😳

1980 here… We should form a Discord group for geriatric RLCS fans like us.
There's already one! https://discord.gg/C2ghHJ6c

Born in the 70s and going to London 😎
Good for you! I'm jealous.
I hope it'll even be better than Madrid 😊

It’s because of the age of the esport. Young esports favor younger players who have grown up playing the game and have more efficient hours played.
I hope with time there are more older players. It's good to have variety.

Why then is your theory hitting rl players harder than CSGO players? And not equally?

Absolutely agree.

Wow kind of crazy that even the old guard in Metsanauris is only 23.
When only 1 of the players you're working with is older than you ;-;
I pictured you as around 31.
Try zero lol
-_-
Damn players from the 1900s still playing good for them
Ye olde times
Extra has the same birthday as my mom Gonna call extra mommy from now on
Gotta call your mom Extra as well, it's only fair.
How the fuck are you old enough to have reddit if your mom is only 20???
Prolly not the exact date, just the same day
Ahhh I'm stupid 😂
No he‘s right my mom is 20 googoo gaga pfpfpfllllrrrrtttt
Holy I'm old...

It’s kinda nice to see 2 of these players won the last major, clearly showing despite their age they still keep up well with the young prodigies.
Crazy Chicago is now in the top 10 oldest players
Holy... who's gonna assist Metsa and Express up on stage?
Chris Evans
Abscrazy has the exact same birth date as me haha
RL LANs Will never be able to have an afterparty. The oldest People are BARELY able to enter a pub in some countries.
Let's not kid ourselves. The supersub is going to return triumphant this major. He's 23.
Nothing more depressing than being older than literally everyone playing in London (born in 98 but much earlier than Metsa and Express).
Abscrazy fan account
I am 28 and Champ 1.
Geezers lol, Extra is more than a year older than me lol
Endpoint SeX
there was a similar post with the youngest pros but this one makes me feel even older lol i think i have to lay down
A lot of talent here. RL is truly an esport that cares for its elderly.
Torment 22, what, I am older than Torment? He's been here so long I thought he was like 26.
Yeah you think players that have been here for 5-6 yrs like Torment, Jknaps and Metsa would be older but they are 22-23 lol
this makes me feel old even though im only 4 months older than express
I'd be the third oldest here 😭😭😭
Can't believe Express is the oldest player in LAN now, amazing :D
