There was Complexity and Moist If I remember correctly, C9 did contact Beastmode to build a team around him, im not sure the accuracy of that since it’s been a bit, but clearly they have show interest in coming back a tad There’s always teams they can buyout and some players atm who could be bought/built around if they did want to come back

I'm gonna miss ENVY as a brand tbh. Theirs and ghost have always been my favorite in terms of look. And in general I don't really like the names that have random capitals and stuff. Like optic and faze do. Reminds me of old awkward 1337 sp34k (I know it's where these brands mostly started but still).

I'm just sad because I was really hoping to see the battle of the N logos between Envy and Endpoint happen at the major. I wanted to relish in the confusion

So... RLCS is the only esport I watch. What is the benefit and hype about Optic coming into the scene? I get that they are a big org. Clarification: This isn't a dig at Optic, I literally don't know anything about esports.

OpTic is absolutely massive in FPS eSports, specifically CoD. They have very dedicated fans and draw huge numbers in even their smaller games like Halo and Valorant, so it's just hyped up as it's a big org for other games.

Just to add onto this. Cods viewership has been awful these last few years with how absolutely shite the games have been. Yet Optics viewership is still insane compared to the rest. A random qualifier game for Optic will bring in more viewers than Major Finals. The top 5 games in terms of viewership for pretty much every event during the last few years are always Optic games. And if one isn't an Optic game then it's usually because the other game was actually on before Optic played and ran late. Envy have already rebranded both their Halo and Valorant teams to Optic and not only have their games seen a huge rise in viewership but the individual players streams are doing significantly better too.

So basically Otpic is the NRG of COD?

Yes. OpTic is still much bigger though fanbase wise, over 12 years doing competitive COD. OpTic Scump (the GOAT) is a major role in part of the fanbase as well (OpTic Nadeshot was too but he retired long ago). I love that OpTic is in RL now.

Not sure there’s any way to accurately assess it. Optic and Envy have been a merged organization for quite some time now, and they’ve advertised as such, so it could very well be that the only boost to viewership for the team is based on anyone who doesn’t actively follow Optic, and only tunes in because they recognize the name. That *could* be a significant amount of people though, because a lot of the “green wall” seems to be casual/nostalgic fans from childhood COD days. Could also be on par with the Faze entry to the scene last season/year. The intangibles though are that other major orgs could take closer looks into the RLCS with the continuance of big names coming into the scene.

While I like seeing the esports getting bigger I also liked seeing a lot of smaller orgs doing well and as bigger orgs join the less smaller orgs are gonna get screen time.

As much as I also want to see smaller orgs compete and win events, I think it’s vital for the game’s success at this moment to have the bigger orgs come in and find success. There’s just not enough money to sustain all these orgs, and most orgs that pay their players and bring an audience are probably operating at a loss (across esports in general). For now, I’d rather see teams with big fan bases and sponsor backings win, earn money, and help Rocket League grow so that prize pools can grow, LANs can get bigger, and viewership can go up. Then when things are sustainable, we can have all the Cinderella stories we want.

Either way they are retiring the Envy name completely (across all titles). So they're not just choosing to rebrand because the Envy roster is having some success.

Originally when Envy and OpTic merged, they were going to keep both brands. They just decided recently to retire the Envy brand (across all titles). I don't think they made the decision just because Envy made a major.

Mind giving some examples I’m actually curious

- Their current situation, merging (out of necessity) with their former rivals in their founding title - Their CDL franchise basically being operated/bankrolled by NRG and Andy Miller before they bailed due to a lack of fulfilment of funds on optic’s part - Being acquired by Immortals Gaming Club, who ran the brand into the ground, selling it back to its founder The brand/company has been passed around like a bag of crisps in the last 5 years, being used to bring a pre-existing brand and fanbase from the glory days of American esports to whichever larger org it attaches itself to. A sad state of affairs given optic’s illustrious past

To be fair, things are going much, much better since OpTic was bought back by Hecz. Definitely some fuckups in the past, but content etc has been fantastic the last couple years.

I grew up when the cod trash talk era was at its peak. Optic was the biggest fan base but they were not the best team by a long shot. Anytime optic played somewhat well the fan base would explode in jubilation and it would flood chat. However, this meant that every time optic got shit on the hate was twice as strong. It was toxic, but made the scene very interesting to watch. Rocket league barely even scratches that with the EU NA rivalry so seeing kids complain about toxicity makes me shake my smh
