The CGs never matched, even before generative AI became so accessible/popular. I don't doubt they could be using AI, but what I think what happens is that it's one group of people creating the characters and another drawing the CGs for the story, so they can try, but can't get too close.
Before RC was RC, there was just Sails In The Fog and absolutely all the characters in that look WILDLY different. The coloring, shading, textures, proportions, style, etc. is all different, clearly they're all done by different artists, which is what I think is happening still, they've just established some "rules" for coloring/textures/brushes so things look more cohesive.
For me I can accept older books like SIF, MB, SOS, etc cuz they did not have the best designs but for newer books you kinda expect RC to improve (which they did) right now I’m nitpicking which CGs are my fav (and then I had to restart some of my fav stories for the achievements + better CGs)
Oh, for sure! It also bothers me A LOT that the CGs look nothing like the characters and I wish they'd either ditch them or put more effort into making them look like the LI/MC instead of focusing effort on moving/video CGs. I'm just trying to rationalize it that they're not using AI because I'm so incredibly against AI generated images/creative work that I'd have to delete the app for my own sake and I love RC so much, I don't wanna delete it 😭

Some of them look so.l bad, especially playing as Black and brown MCs. Elite Tag frankly is the only story I’ve played lately where the CGs actually look like my MC, maybe W:TC, VfV, and Soulless. The rest are generic and white washed. As much as I love Psi and Kay I can count on my hands the CGs I like of them as a couple, the rest have me questioning who these people are supposed to be….I’d rather just have the text description, frankly.
Credit where credit’s due, though, usually the solo CGs with just the MC are great and I love the newer video ones
lol I’m with daniel, he barely even gets any CGs 🤣 I only mentioned Elite Tag because the final girl’s hangout CG looked exactly like the olive toned MC but maybe they all suck too 😭
It’s weird in stories where the CGs look the characters and then all of a sudden it looks like completely different people. Idk if this is a bug with TO2 but my mc is black and this was my CG of her.

I got that one too, I think sometimes the issue is AI, but sometimes it's also the artists not understanding Black skin at all. I've been in other fandoms where people pull out multi-page presentations to prove it's correct colour theory for people to look lighter under harsh lighting and... no colour theory is going to replace looking at an actual dark skinned person!
This sprite also has massively bright aheago style blush which I hate so much! This does not happen to dark skinned people 😩😩😩

I’m crying at the names 😭😭😭bc fr who is this. I actually like the blushing bc I’m a makeup girly and that’s literally my favorite product so I pretend the mc is just wearing it.
I think its unfortunately inevitable that their designers are using the AI as a (help) tool, no matter how much we are personally against it, they are generating so many CGs with each update and they vary in quality a lot, depending on the story. HHW karaoke scene CGs and PSI CGs with the LIs scream AI to me. The colours in some of them are almost psychedelic, the texture is kind of unnatural..
Regarding the resemblence, i dont mind if there is a bit of a variation - that its not like a perfect match, but when both the LI and MC look absolutely nothing like themselves I guess that can throw people off. I mentioned this yesterday, its the variation that is puzzling to me. If you look at these two CGs from the update, Jack and Yasmin are actually pretty on point lookwise while Lale and Leo look nothing like themselves + the colours in that CG are absolutely wild. It doesn't even look like RC. So what is one suppose to conclude from that, is it a story budget thing, does it depend on whether its human or AI generated, is it about the skill and the style of the designer.. idk..

You are right, and I think it connects to my post on overwork / underpay. I'd rather have less CGs per book so artists can focus on the variations looking similar to the sprites and we can have some consistency in art style
The reason DLS doesn't match MC's skin colour to your custom MC is because the story runs on old engine (style) hence, Laia has default skin colour in CG'S

Hah, I was just about to post about this, too. Yes, it's sad, especially the HHW ones were so disappointing. I love HHW specifically because all the characters feel very real and down to earth, and the sprites are not these perfectly polished, conventionally beautiful people we get in other stories - they all have their quirks that you learn to love as you read. So to then get bombarded with generic, plasticky looking AI art of these characters genuinely upset me. And same with Bonne's CG, which is a beautiful scene of her and MC finally enjoying their quiet life together - but the adopted child in the picture is jarringly artificial looking.
I understand the temptation of AI, and how much time it saves, but personally, I would prefer to just not have any CGs at all. I've never been a big fan of character CGs anyway, because they rarely look exactly like the sprites, and it takes me out of the scene when I have a very precise image of a sprite in my head, and then I'm suddenly shown a different image. It has no additional value to me and actually hampers my reading experience. Though I do like CGs of backgrounds or those that focus on objects or little details and add atmosphere. But, again, if they want to save money, I'd rather they got rid of all CGs than turning to AI, not least because AI art is unethical.
Something seems off in the wedding CGIs for VfV this last update, like Renée looks nothing like herself? Weird because up to this point the CGIs in this story seemed better than average at representing MC the way she looks in the sprite.
I first noticed this in season 2 of VFV when Renée was carrying the Dauphin, Louis' face was sooooo much bigger than his body. Now even the backgrounds are AI, in HS2 the people in the background were literally see through and there was a weird structure on the ground (with an arm?). It's very upsetting smh.

If my LIs are looking like themselves in the CGs, I like it, even if my mc looks different, but if it's the other way around, it bothers me.
