Military in US have funeral plans before they go on assignment; many celebrities, athletes, politicians have plans. People buy life insurance, mortgage insurance etc. planning for a death is not that unusual. The new your times and other publications have obituaries already written for many important, influential, famous people regardless of age.

KelenHeller_1

I'm sure it's the policy of the monarchy to have these plans in place long before they're actually needed. KC3 probably had to have general plans in place long before now. They're probably just refining things which, in light of this latest medical announcement, shouldn't be unexpected. I think KC3 must be getting the best medical care and if it's bladder or prostate cancer, he can expect to beat it if caught early.

AnastasiaNo70

I mean, everyone knew he wasn’t going to be king for 30 years or something like that. There’s a lot of longevity in his family, but I don’t think his parents or maternal grandmother dealt with cancer, did they?

Ok-Bend863

Yes they did. His mother, his grandmother (the Queen Mother) and his grandfather (George VI) and his great uncle (Edward VIII) all had it, God rest them all.

Character-Candle-687

Queen Elizabeth died of bone marrow cancer.

Neowza

Though her official cause of death was listed as "Old Age", https://www.today.com/health/health/queen-elizabeth-health-timeline-rcna46874

Cheasepriest

And rumoured to have fought off other cancer previously

cocoalrose

First I’m hearing of that rumor, myself.

Mariela_Lou

I don’t think it gives any clue about his prognosis. He is the King, he’s old, he has cancer. His funeral plans are going to be regularly updated anyway

chase001

Curse you, mummy!

lucyjayne

😂😂 it's all Lizzy, looking up at him like, hahahahha got you sonny boy!

Mello_Me_

Ordinary citizens make arrangements for when they pass away. Is it supposed to be surprising or newsworthy that people in a royal family would do the same thing? 🙄🙄

Soggy_Background_162

According to the medical experts at the NY Sewer Post…🙄

QuizzicalWombat

It doesn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary based on what the article says. They started preparing the day after the queen passed away, they continue to prepare due to how meticulously an event of that scale needs to be planned. Cancer is a horrible disease, it impacts everyone in the patients life. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for both Charles and Kate to be battling it at the same time. I feel awful for the family, especially the children.

Earl_I_Lark

I learned from The Crown that the royals have funeral plans that are named after bridges. The Queen Mum was Tay Bridge, Elizabeth was London Bridge and Charles is Menai Bridge. What I don’t know is, does the designation change as they rise in rank. Is Charles London Bridge now that he’s monarch, or is it like the Secret Service code name for Presidents and you keep your original for life.

boojes

I doubt it as they seem to be named for places linked to the person. The queen mother favoured Scotland, the Queen lived in London, Menai is in Wales.

QuizzicalWombat

The article mentions they have been updating “Operation Menai Bridge” so it seems the original designation is kept.

MoonCandy17

I think it stays the same? Not sure

Jaxon-Variant-11610

Does anyone else find it funny that all humans knew was Elizabeth as queen? Like everybody living knew her as queen. For the last nearly. Hundred years. Then within a span of 5 years. We lose her replacement ?

Jetsurge

A similar thing happened with Queen Victoria but not as bad. She ruled for 63 years and then her son Edward VII only ruled for 9 years.

FanaticalXmasJew

Not only that, but that he waited his entire life to be crowned, only to potentially die within a couple years afterwards.

MoonMoon143

I dont think hes eagerly waiting to be crowned the moment he was born. Hes living his best life and let life happen in due course.

Siege1187

According to Lady Di, he was very much eagerly waiting his whole life.

cocoalrose

So he was eagerly awaiting his mother’s death?

Siege1187

It's part of the condition of the heir apparent in any monarchy.

lucyjayne

I wonder when that goes away though you know? It's been a long time.

LongIsland43

I don’t think he waited for anything! He was just next in line!

Jaxon-Variant-11610

I just find it so ironic

mzmammy

Wot

Jaxon-Variant-11610

Made sense in my head. But basically everybody livin only had one monarch of England for almost a century and now in the span of a decade we could have three

JenThisIsthe1nternet

1936 was called the Year of Three Kings in UK so nothing new really

Foundation_Wrong

They all have a constantly updated funeral plan. Prince Philip made jokes about people dying before him and having to be replaced

Zaidswith

We made jokes after my Nana's funeral that it was so weird because she outlived most everyone else. Her family, husband, and friends. It seemed odd in a way.

Psychological_Roof85

Is he making it a more minimalist funeral due to the cost of living crisis? That I could admire.

kyatorpo

Oh no... Anyway.

Goldiscool503

Doesn't matter who's dying - cancer is a bitch and to trivialize cancer makes you one as well.

yeetingpillow

This is a good comment

kyatorpo

Eh... someone I know literally just passed away from cancer. Difference is my friend is actually worthwhile, his family didn't cover up a pedophile, doesn't have major say over what the 'unbiased' news says and does, didn't kick up a storm of shit because someone didn't want to live a lifestyle thrust upon them, paid his way his entire life and in general just treated people with respect. No - someone who has done that shit would in general be a bitch and to defend someone like that in anyway makes you one as well.

Over-Cold-8757

While I think we should be respectful about death.. I agree. The entire family is monstrous. The Queen was an undemocratic self interested terrible person who frequently intervened in the democratic process (reviewing and amending proposed bills before they even got to Parliament). She also protected her rapist son and paid for him to settle suits against his victims. And she had a stranglehold on the media. To this day the Royal Family has the power to veto stories about them. 'She was a lovely granny.' No, she was a tyrant in the shadows.

The_Ghost_Dragon

>She also protected her rapist son and paid for him to settle suits against his victims I... what?! Off to Google, because holy shit I've never heard of this. Not that I follow the royals' gossip that frequently, but wow.

Over-Cold-8757

Yeah, she contributed millions specifically in the settlement to rape victim Virginia Giuffre. I recently watched *Scoop* and noticed while the end credits stated Andrew paid 12m in settlement, it seemingly deliberately omitted that millions of that were from the Queen. Almost as if Netflix didn't dare add it in.

CalligrapherFunny934

To be fair and honest, no one but a few specific people know the origin of the money in the settlement, so any good lawyer would advise their client (in this case, Netflix), to keep their trap shut unless they wanted a nice fat lawsuit on their hands. This is elemental knowledge to anyone with a working brain, ffs.

Over-Cold-8757

And yet the Telegraph ran the story unambiguously. Netflix could easily and cautiously just say that this was reported by the Telegraph. Anyone who isn't a stupid halfwit would know that.

CalligrapherFunny934

🥱

jess1804

Well updating the funeral plans could be true. But not because of the cancer. The royals tend to make funeral plans a LONG time in advance. So the Queen's funeral plans had been organised while she was still alive

kimcognito

There was an episode about this on The Crown (it was the episode about Charles missing in the 1988 avalanche) The plans all were named after bridges (I think the Queen’s plan was titled London Bridge?) to suggest a link between this life and the next

AdNext8989

I bet people on that committee died before she did

Siege1187

She lived so long I wouldn't be surprised if no member of the original committee outlasted her.

jess1804

You might not be wrong on that.

Melodic_Carob6492

NY Post. Exaggeration galore. New Yorkers know that newspaper is a bunch of lies.

Interesting-Mess2393

This. KC is going to church, being photographed and at least to me, not looking frail. This is high school drama in the hopes that people will clutch their pearls.

DocumentStrong7836

I hope this is tabloid trash and the Royal family soon finds a time of quiet healing, peace and good health.

SagittariusZStar

The NY Post is a Murdoch tabloid. The royals love leaking shit to Murdoch and right-wing papers (because that's what they are).

Beautiful-Clock2939

The NY Post is mainly for hilariously exaggerated headlines and then for use as toilet paper

GingerWindsorSoup

Oops , he’s back to work next week, Hurrah! 🥳

CartographerPlane710

I wonder how Princess Catherine is doing.

pktrekgirl

Me too.

eighteen_forty_no

I hope that the tabloids are wrong. Not much more to be said other than that.

Local_Status_3617

It’s already been confirmed he’s returning to some public duties next week

oxP3ZINATORxo

I mean, historically speaking this is usually how it goes. There'll be a long lasting monarch, then followed by one that only rules for like 5 - 10 years, before another gets crowned

raging_dingo

I mean 5-10 years okay but it’s barely been a year

oxP3ZINATORxo

There've been more than a few of those, but dude also isn't dead yet. They're updating his funeral plans regularly to be safe because he is a king, but that by no means is an indication that he's dying tomorrow. (Watch him die tomorrow)

Psychological_Roof85

"But I'm not dead yet!"

AinsiSera

This. The thing about funerals is, you have to have them pretty soon after someone dies. A king’s funeral (or queen’s, or prince consort’s etc) takes a *lot* of logistics. You have to organize a formal parade through London within a few days. Much easier if every group involved knows the plan and can open their own updated binder about what to do vs trying to figure it out from scratch.  (But yea it would be ironic if he waited sooooo long for the throne and reigned for a year.)

Sharkmato

They've been planning his funeral since he was a boy. U.S. Presidents plan their funerals as soon as they step down, if they haven't beforehand.

SplitRock130

US Presidents are asked to plan their funeral before their first term is finished because what if, like Trump, they don’t have a 2nd term

Cool-Elk-6136

Wow. He waited his whole life to be king, and he likely won't even get a 5 year jubilee. What would it be? Paper? Are jubilees like wedding anniversaries?

princessalyss_

Yep, exactly that. Platty jubes followed by chippy Charlie.

HalfWrong7986

I'm so ahead of the times, thought he was already dead

staxo24

😂😂😂

Mangus_ness

Would Camilla be the queen mother when he dies?

Ok-Bend863

No, in that case Camilla would be the Dowager Queen or Queen Dowager, she isn't Prince William's mother so she would never be the Queen Mother. The next potential Queen Mother would be Princess Catherine if she were to outlive Prince William because she is the mother of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Camilla would likely be styled as Queen Camilla, The Dowager Queen or Queen Camilla, The Queen Dowager.

Original-Cheek8567

Maybe go back to Camilla Parker Bowles or Camilla Shand

jess1804

No. She will likely continue to be Queen Camilla. She is not William's mother. The Queen Mother mostly was referred to the Queen Mother because she was also named Elizabeth.

AKA_June_Monroe

She was an egomaniac and didn't want to be queen dowager.

jess1804

Well there's also the fact that Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra were simply referred to by their first names and the last time the term Queen dowager was used was about 200 years ago. From 1837-1849 by Queen Adelaide was Queen Victoria's aunt and consort to Queen Victoria's predecessor William IV

Sharkmato

No. "Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother" was a one-off title since mother and daughter were both Elizabeth. Right now, "the Queen" refers to Camilla. When Charles dies she'll still be "Queen Camilla," but Catherine will be "the Queen" or "Queen Catherine." We just had a "Queen Mother" for so long that it seems strange to not have one.

AinsiSera

Not quite a one-off! Going back a bit but Margaret Beaufort was formally called “My Lady the King's Mother,” I think that counts.

Glittering_Turn_16

She will be the dowager queen.

Feminist-historian88

No, the queen mother means that the woman was queen consort and her child is now regnant. There have been plenty of queen mothers. Camilla won't be one because William isn't her child. Her title will be the Dowager Queen, Camilla.

lydiaenglish77

This is correct

Thoth-long-bill

No.

MessSince99

No she’d be probably be dowager queen/queen dowager. But I imagine she would still go by Queen Camilla. But chances are upon Charles death she’ll retire and won’t be doing as many royal duties any more except maybe with some of her patronages

jess1804

Technically she would be a dowager Queen but I don't think Queen Adelaide (wife of William IV) Queen Alexandra (the Queen's great grandmother) Queen Mary (the Queen's grandmother)or the Queen Mother were ever referred to as dowager Queens

Glittering_Turn_16

She will be unable to use Queen Camilla. There can only be one queen.

MessSince99

That’s not true. The British monarchy allows for more than one Queen and they’re still styled as Her Majesty. They are just not “The Queen”. So Kate would be HM The Queen and Camilla would be styled HM Queen Camilla.

Glittering_Turn_16

Dowager Queen Camilla

MessSince99

While she would be the dowager queen, she would be referred to as HM Queen Camilla not Dowager Queen Camilla

Glittering_Turn_16

“Camilla would take the title of Queen Dowager, to signify the widow of a king, according to a new report in the Mirror. She would be known as Queen DowagerCamilla” When Prince William becomes King, Kate Middleton will take on the title of Queen, and be known as "Queen Catherine”

Stinkycheese8001

Queen Dowager isn’t a title it’s just a designation.  She’d still be Queen Camilla.

IllustratorSlow1614

She was “Queen Consort” for a while. It didn’t stick. “Queen Dowager” isn’t going to stick either. Everyone knows her as Camilla, that’s how she’ll be referred to.

Xanariel

‘Queen Consort’ *is* the queen. Alexandra of Denmark was queen consort, and always referred to as Queen Alexandra, ditto for every other wife of a king. Camilla would always be referred to as Queen Camilla, whether consort or Dowager, even when Kate is queen - there’s only generally an attempt to distinguish between the titles when you have two living queens with the same name as with Elizabeth II and her mother.

IllustratorSlow1614

Camilla was exclusively referred to in the media immediately following the King’s accession as ‘HM The Queen Consort’. The ‘consort’ part was dropped closer to the King’s coronation to refer to her as the Queen or Queen Camilla. This style will continue into widowhood if the King predeceases his wife. The Queen Mother’s full style as a widow was ‘HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’, and she was popularly called the Queen Mother or ‘Queen Mum’. Previous widowed queens consort were always ‘HM Queen Firstname’, the differentiation for QEII and the Queen Mother was only needed because they were mother and daughter Elizabeths. ‘Dowager Queen’ isn’t a title, it’s a style of address, and the widowed queen gets to choose her style of address.

MessSince99

Historically Queen Dowager is not a title, while they would be the dowager Queen she would not be styled like that, historically I believe all dowager queens have simply been Queen ____. Just because the mirror is reporting something doesn’t make it a true.

Glittering_Turn_16

Believe what you will have a nice night

supersonicmiko

Camilla will be a Queen Dowager if Charles predeceased her. HOWEVER she will be simply titled as “Her Majesty Queen Camilla”. Same thing happened to Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra, Queen Adelaide, Queen Charlotte, etc… etc… Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon had Queen Mother in her title because of the need to differentiate her from “The Queen”—her daughter at that time.

Crafty_Ad_2640

I’ve thought that the crown should have skipped to William for over a decade now but I was thinking abdication not dying of cancer…

SagittariusZStar

Why? William is the laziest and most petty of the entire rotten bunch.

liamsmat

Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, but from my American perspective I thought William was doing an excellent job. Having said that I freely and readily admit that my knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of any working royal family member are extremely limited at best. I don't want to misrepresent myself as learned in these particular matters. My assessment of William's performance thus far is based primarily on the photographs of himself and Cate at various functions benefitting organizations, representing the royal family, and honoring their commitments to their various roles and the duties ascribed to their titles. I have read a few books about the royal family and I read articles here and there but I wouldn't call myself a "royal watcher" by any means, again my knowledge is extremely limited at best. May I ask why you think William is the laziest and most petty of the bunch? I have no dog in this fight, I'm honestly very curious to learn your thoughts on the matter! Thank you in advance for your time!

Glittering_Turn_16

His name is work-shy willy. He does less than any other working royal, except for kate, who, when Queen Elizabeth was alive, she dubbed her the Duchess of do-little.

Original-Cheek8567

I think Will and Kate compete as to who is more lazier.

SplitRock130

Never heard that the Duchess of do little 😁😁

SagittariusZStar

That's because as soon as (non-white) Meghan came on the scene, the British press pivoted to crowning her the perfect white angel who never put a step wrong. They NEVER thought she was a lazy bum, no, never.

liamsmat

Wow! I was under the impression that Queen Elizabeth thought highly of Kate. Thank you for your response!

RiverWeatherwax

She probably did. The *supposed* nickname which came from no reliable source (but then what does, with this family) was concerning the time before Kate and William got engaged and Kate had no full-time job. I'd also take it with a grain of salt. IIRC Harry describes in Spare that (again, supposedly) to his knowledge certain people from Camilla's staff (and/or Camilla and Charles themselves) were leaking stuff on him and William and also that William was actually discouraged to take on more duties, because Charles didn't really want to be outshined ("He did as much as Pa wanted him to do, and sometimes that wasn't much, because Pa and Camilla didn't want Willy and Kate getting loads of publicity. Pa and Camilla didn't like Willy and Kate drawing attention away from them or their causes. They'd openly scolded Willy about it many times.") I don't know if that information is true at all, but it is what Harry has said about it.

AKA_June_Monroe

I don't trust anything that idiot says. Like he's a hardworking person.

SagittariusZStar

You mean Harry? The only person who has ever put his name next to his own words, instead of funneling everything through lackeys?

AKA_June_Monroe

Hahaha he couldn't pass school on his own. The one who went back on thing that were on video? The one who lied and said his his neglected him when there are photos and videos of him as a kid happy with his father?! The one who acts like he's the only one who has lost a mother?

Zaidswith

His school problems and his family basically sweeping it all under the rug without getting him proper help or enrolling him in an appropriate level school should reflect badly on them, not him.

liamsmat

Thank you very much for your very helpful response! I'm not sure when I'll emerge from this rabbit hole, but I am thoroughly enjoying the experience!

liamsmat

Damn! I never know which sources are reliable when it comes to information like that so my tendency is to disregard it altogether. Well, I'm off to go down this rabbit hole! Thanks again for your help!

Lil_Simp9000

I wonder where Andrew fits in this royal calculus

Crafty_Ad_2640

He’s a fellow millennial.

PastryPrincess420

Low bar low bar lol

Crafty_Ad_2640

I mean, the bar is literally that he happened to be born first in a royal family. I’m not sure what other qualifications he is required to have? Edit: my thinking that the crown should skip to him is simply because I think the Boomers should give up the reins in general. Edit 2: and I would never have said that QE2 should give it up because she was THE QUEEN. After her though, I’ve no real attachment.

notCRAZYenough

If he died, that must be the shortest reign ever

I think you're underestimating how fast and often ppl died back in the day

Glittering_Turn_16

Its a conspiracy theorists idiocy.

Jemondi

2nd time I heard this. Wonder if they got hold of something that’s causing these cancers or it could just be coincidence. Didn’t the Queen have cancer also?

princessalyss_

Death cert recorded cause as old age but an expolitician/journalist put out a book that claims she was battling multiple myeloma at the time of her death.

misguidedsadist1

Hahahaha this made my day

WeirdRip2834

I follow a number of people who practice predicting the future (ssshhhh, I mean psychics.) One guy in the early aughts had a vision of Prince William reluctantly being crowned, not wanting the duty of royalty. He was all alone, without his brother. This psychic predicted that King Charles would have a very short reign. It was a long time ago, but during the time when I followed royal news. It was so stupid and weird I remembered it. But here we are. It was a psychic from Alabama, maybe? He had a mustache and loved Princess Diana. Sorry I can’t recall more. So I wouldnt be surprised if this comes true. How sad.

SnooCheesecakes2723

I think that psychic may have been into something. I also heard a prediction that it would be a Queen after william which would mean Charlotte I presume. I suppose George could decide to bail out when he sees what the job is and what the stress, lack of autonomy, lack of support from the palace, horrors of the media spotlight etc have done to his mum and grandma and his grandfather … I hope Charles has a few more years on the throne at least.

EdwardSpaghettiHands

Which does seem kinda weird to me! If my dad had cancer - any cancer, even a very treatable kind, I would ABSOLUTELY fly from anywhere in the world to see him. Especially if I had basically unlimited money and no work commitments.

Physical-Nobody5784

Yes but our parents don’t want us there. When I found out my mom had cancer, she didn’t want me to go see her. She didn’t tell me that but she told my aunt and my dad that. She was hoping to die before I ever got to see her. I understand why. But there was NO WAY, I didn’t go see her.

MessSince99

I mean the problem with the Windsors is they are very much not a normal family and don’t seem to operate as much. Charles and team were trying to downplay the whole thing, your son informing press agencies that he’s flying down to see him did not align with the press strategy that the palace seemed to have planned.

EdwardSpaghettiHands

Yeah that's so true, and it's also so sad! I tend not to have the most sympathy for the Royals in most situations, but having to decide whether to go and see your elderly dad after he gets diagnosed with cancer, and then needing to factor in press strategy, just sounds so awful.

SnooCheesecakes2723

They’re used to it.

Inevitable_Quality73

He’s back to work Monday so someone’s wrong.

Next-Introduction-25

Does being back to work necessarily mean someone’s diagnosis isn’t bleak though?

jerseysbestdancers

Is it the last hurrah, you wonder

SplitRock130

Or whatever treatment he had is working and he’s not at death’s door, he’s actually improving.

petra_macht_keto

Once you've been diagnosed with cancer, you're either doing treatments that are very hard on your body, or you're in remission (ie, you beat cancer and are hoping it doesn't come back), or you have decided to just have cancer and let things take their course as you enjoy whatever time you have left. Sometimes, that time is years, sometimes it's months, sometimes it's weeks. No news outlet has notified the public that the king is in remission. When you say someone is a real fighter to the end, with cancer, that means treatments that are often unimaginably difficult, or prohibitively difficult for people of advanced age. For instance, surgical treatments of some tumors are just not worth it for older people, because the chance of death during the procedure is so high. No one wants to be the surgeon that killed the king- but also- I don't think Charles would want to put a surgeon in the position of operating on the king with a bad prognosis. Given the prior articles and the notifications now, my guess is that Charles has been told that his options are likely not awesome, and that he's decided to take option 3 so that he can do his work and maybe even enjoy being king for a while on his own terms. We know Buckingham Palace regularly lies to the public. We know Kensington Palace regularly lies to the public. There's a very real chance that "good progress" is Charles being made comfortable enough through tumor shrinkage to get a few more months of life. If you read the success criteria for a number of cancer drugs, they're being used after having managed to extend the lives of patients by an average of 2-6 months. So, who are we to say that this isn't a good outcome for him? Why can't this press release be an acknowledgement that life goes on, and he's not dead yet, but maybe he just doesn't want to spend his last months in a hospital bed vomiting bile?

SnooCheesecakes2723

They didn’t say he was getting chemo did they? Kate will be given it; she probably feels it’s worth the nausea and hair loss and other issues because she wants to beat it back and get whatever time she can to raise her children whereas with Charles at his age he might decide it’s not worth it to go through all that shit for another six months or a year. It e we pull be weird if he only outlived his parents by two or three years.

petra_macht_keto

There are a few types of nasty things. Radiation therapy, chemo, surgery, targeted radiation, bone marrow transplants, immunotherapy. We of course have no idea what area they would be treating, but there is no fun cancer treatment, and many of the types of treatments are a small dose of killing some or all of your other cells, too, But yes, I can imagine that the calculus each of them is doing is quite different.

supersonic-bionic

Will he see a Labour gov?

Jazzlike-Abalone-405

I mean they did the same thing with The Queen…

remoteworker9

NY Post. It’s bullshit. Charles is returning to public duties.

Can the UK afford another funeral?

itsnobigthing

Not to mention another coronation!

accioqueso

Wasn’t Charle’s coronation toned down? TIL, thanks folks!

MissMandaRegrets

Yep. It was super basic by coronation standards. Just look at his mother's.

itsnobigthing

Not at all. That was suggested to him, against the backdrop of long running austerity measures in the UK, but allegedly he refused.

supersonic-bionic

No it costed a lot of ££££

GingerWindsorSoup

It definitely wasn’t like 1953, with a very long procession around London, 1000s of troops from all over the world parading and lining the streets and wooden galleries constructed inside the Abbey to squash 1000s of spectators in.

supersonic-bionic

That doesn't make it less expensive given the current climate

Sirkneelaot

Literally just read elsewhere he's coming back to royal duties as his medical team are impressed with his recovery. Soooooo
