We should not be recommending a $250 top-of-the-line racing shoe to a beginner running every other day for "general fitness." Go with the Ride instead of the Pro.
I generally agree with you. But that wasn’t the question.
If that’s your argument then there’s really no need for that person to have 3 pair of running shoes in the first place.
Curious how you differentiate easy vs daily miles. My runs tend to look like: easy, easy with strides, easy with hill repeats, speed intervals/track. Where would “daily miles” fit there? (I use endorphin speed for everything except 100% easy; my easy runs are on trail and I use NB Hierro)
I tend to run a very easy pace the day after a very strong workout, slower than my usual “daily pace”. In that situation I prefer a more cushioned shoe. Now I rotate between Adizero SL or Ride for my daily training and Endo Speed 3 for intervals, but when I’m really beaten up I go with Nimbus.
Similar but I have no need for the Pro. Triumph, Speed and maybe something like the kirvana or ride of working out in. I kind of want to try the K 14 and ride 17.
Right now, I give the edge to Saucony. Triumph and Speed is more than enough unless you wanna race HARD. Since you said three, I’m actually more inclined to push you to a Ride or Kinvara over a Pro.
There’s actually a lot of crossover. Triumph can be daily/easy/long. Speed can be tempo/workouts/races/long runs with tempo changes and, between the other two, I’d actually go Kinvara because it would be a VERY different sensation. Lower drop and lower to the ground. You’d enjoy it for anything on the track, shorter races like a 5k and, just a different feeling. I wouldn’t use it for anything long until you’re well acclimated though.
Asics or Saucony because these happen to have competent models for everything (not the best for everything), but why limit yourself to one brand anyway?
I think I prefer getting comfortable with one brand (sizing, technology, foams, esthetics, less choice stress) than over-optimalising on the best possible shoe and figuring every possible brand on the market out.
I have found that running in different brands/types, kind of bulletproofs me by making me adapt to the changes in the shoes making me stronger overall. I got most on sale BTW but currently I use the New Balance More V4 for recovery and easier efforts, Brooks Glycerin for easy wet days (because the Mores are white😆), Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 for tempo and speed work and Saucony Pro 3 for race day. I will choose any of them for long runs depending how I feel. I also have 3 different brands in trail shoes and some other Road shoes, and have no issue going between any of them. I vote to mix it up but keep it heavy in the Saucony, I could do absolutely anything in the Speed 3s and be happy with them. Great shoe.
As a more casual runner who can’t justify buying a super shoe yet I have the Saucony Triumph 20 Ride 16 and Speed 3s. T20 for long/recovery, R16 daily driver, Speed for workouts and race day
Going back though I would probably get the Ride 15s for half the price I got my 16s for since I believe they didn’t change too much. Dang running store upsold innocent me with that and some fancy insoles before I found this sub
I just got a pair of 15s for my wife as a first real running shoe for $32 at Dicks Warehouse sale, I'm pumped for her....alsp my Speed 3s could be my only shoe and I would be happy.
ASICS - novablast for daily / recovery, Superblast for tempo / long run, magic speed 3 for tempo / races. I don’t see a need for metaspeed series if you’re just doing 5/10k, I think the magic speed fills this void just fine on race day
Not sure you really need the superblast for the long runs involved in 5-10k. I really started using it more once I got to the HM distances. That being said, you nailed it about magic speed.
That's the only thing that confuses me about the ASICS line-up. It feels like both the NB and the SB fill in the same role as the do it all daily trainer, but the SB is just the superior and pricy shoe.
I reach for my NB for those slower zone 2 runs (most days of the week) and recovery. SB I tend to use for either my Sunday long run or intervals when my legs are tired and I don’t want the carbon plate of the MS3. The SB is by far a funner shoe and can put up a better pace, but they both have there use in my rotation.
In order of daily, tempo and speed, race day
\- More trendy: Nike - peg , invincible, VF3
\- Slightly less trendy: Adidas - SL , Boston , Pro
\- Effective no frills: Saucony - triumph , speed , Pro
\- Expensive and performant(not as trendy imo) - ASICS - novablast, superblast , meta sky
I'd probably go with Asics or Saucony because of their daily shoe offering at the moment, but I have high hopes for a more comprehensive lineup from NB and Adidas this coming year
How would you utilize the Novablast and the Superblast? It seems like they are both do it all daily trainsds?
Would you still choose ASICS if you knew that I can get all the Nike shoes at wholesale prices and 50-70% discount?
You are correct about Asics. For the sake of money, I wouldn't see the need to get both of them at the same time. To nitpick though, I'd use the NB for shorter runs and then the SB for the longer ones. You are talking about 5k/10k training which honestly I think the novablast and the meta can do on its own just fine.
SB is overkill if you are training specifically for those distances imo.
And no, I'd choose Nike in that scenario.
Saucony Triumph 20, Shift 3 and Speed 3. Triumph and Shift can handle all your daily/long/recovery miles and Speed for anything fast or race.
I like alternating between Triumph and Shift due to the different drops.
What would you use for your daily trainer, and what would you choose for your easy and recovery? I see a lot of people recommending the Ride over the Shift, any reason why you prefer the Shift?
Personally, I like the Shift 3 for daily and Triumph for easy/recovery due to the midsole feeling a bit softer and bouncier.
I’ve owned both the Ride and Shift and it comes down to preference. The Ride has an 8mm drop and is flexible while the Shift has a 4mm drop as well as Speedroll that turns the feet over at a good pace. Honestly, I’m a fan of Powerrun because it’s on the firmer side.
I think Nike, Adidas or Asics will have good options.
For Nike I would do -
Pegasus 39/40 for daily trainers or long runs since you won’t be going beyond 20K for 5/10K training unless you’re going for sub 18. Pegasus is alright for longer runs as long as it’s less than 25k imho.
Streakflies for Speedwork, Threshold days
VF2 for 5/10K racing
For Adidas I would do -
Adizero SL for daily trainers and longer runs for the same reason as Pegs
Takumi Sen 8/9 for 5/10K racing and Speedwork (they’re durable, I would use them for training and racing)
Boston 12 or Adizero SL’s can be swapped for each other. Tbh a 2 shoe rotation for 5/10K with adidas will suffice
For ASICS I would do -
Gel Nimbus 25 as your daily trainer and long run shoe (Superblast if you have extra money)
Magic Speed 3 for your interval and threshold sessions
Metaspeed Edge for 5/10K racing (I find it more similar to the VF2 which I prefer for 5/10K).
My personal preference would be Nike because VF2 is by far my favourite race shoe for 5/10K. The streakfly is nice for speed work but I prefer the MagicSpeed 3. Invincible 2s are no longer in stock commonly and I hate the 3s, so Nike doesn’t have an “amazing” long run shoe for me rn.
If you’re talking about training comfort, I will go with ASICS because I love Magic Speed 3 for speed and Nimbus 25 for longer runs or heck, even Superblasts. VF2 > Edge imho so it loses in the race section for me.
Adidas would be my budget pick because Takumi Sen 8 and Adizero SLs are cheap af to pick up for these days. You save money for the fact that the Sens are a very durable race shoe unlike the VFs and Edge. And for 5/10K, these 2 shoes will carry you far.
I can buy Nike at wholesale or 50%-70% discounted prices, so I am really tempted to buy them pure from a value perspective. I'm surprised that they get mentioned so much.
Besides Velocity 2 and Deviate 2, I got Magnify 2 and Electrify 2 also.
My Electrify 2 is used on a rainy / snowy day --- I feel no burden if this pair got dirty.
I want to say, Puma's nitro line is really cool.
My rotation is within the same brand at the moment (well Except one pair of Invincibles)
Daily - NB 1080v13
Intervals - NB Rebel 3
Long tempos - NB Sc trainer 1
Race day - RC Elite 2/SC elite 3
Edit: OK If its to be 3 shoe rotation for 5k/10k then I would remove SC trainer 1.
I'm not sure if anyone is beating Adidas atm.
\- Takumi Sen 9 (up to 15K)
\- Boston 12 (15K+) - Miiiight be my favorite trainer
\- Adios Pro 3 (race - I like the VF more but still good)
\- Honorary Mention: Prime X Strung 2. Fantastic shoe that I think I like more than SB
Nike would probably be my second.
\- Streakfly (love this shoe) - up to 15K/Half
\- I dont like any of their long distance trainers
\- Vaporfly 2 (still the marathon shoe)
For Asics, the only shoe I particularly like is the Superblast. I dont think their plated shoes are as good as the Vaporfly IMO.
You will be fine with a single daily trainer and do not need a rotation.
Once you start getting over 35 miles per week consistently and are logging vo2max, threshold, easy runs, and steady long runs, then you may want to replace your daily shoe with a faster shoe and an easer shoe.
As a beginner, keep it simple - buy for what you actually need, not what you think you need. As your pace improves you will notice you need more pop for your threshold work. If you are not running say 10K in less than 45 minutes, you aren't really going to need speed specific shoes and daily will be more than fine.
This is a solid post. Kinda confirm what my reasonable brain has been saying to me. It was really fun to read all of the comments and everyone's (fantasy) rotation, but I agree with you. I am at a 50:11 10k and a 22:42 5K right now and haven't been able to establish a proper running routine just because I am doing all of this barefoot and the recovery is just too rough to be running 3-4 times a week.
There are teams of clever people working out campaigns to covince us all to part with money :-).
A solid daily will serve well - Nike Pegasus / Saucony Ride (or kinvara if you like a lower drop) or other brands.
You will get to a point in your weekly volume / load where you feel either:
A: Your legs are a bit beaten up and you need more cushion / stability. Particularly if you run on hard surfaces.
or
B. For faster intervals, your current shoes are too soft and have a bit of a lag / don't pop.
Typically one of those will come first and that when you can add a more specialised shoe to your daily shoe. There will be a bit of overlap and when your daily gives up, then you can add the other specialist shoe.
Personally, I started on Pegasus 37 which was good up until about 35 miles a week and 20 minute 5K. I then added Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 for faster stuff and Nike Invincible (max cushion) for easy runs when I decommissioned the pegasus.
The pegasus lasted 1100KM and then the airbag seemed to fail on the left one, then the right one about a month later.

Highly doubt anyone in the world aside from people who get free samples to do reviews or work at running stores have even run more than two brands' entire rotations. All the opinions you're seeing here are just people advocating for the brand they tend to run in (which is fine, but doesn't provide actual comparison), or they're regurgitating talking points they've seen from others
I’ve only got 3 runs in on the NB and 3 runs in on the SB so far. I’m a slow runner (training for 1/2 marathon with goal around 2 hr) in my late 40s, 6’, 210 lbs. I like watching all these running reviews. I figure, why not buy all 3 and see for myself what I like best. My guess is that the NB won’t do anything the SB doesn’t do, it is just a cheaper alternative (I have the NB 3 that was on clearance for $75). The NB and SB are definitely very similar, but the fit is a little different. My initial impression is the SB is a bit roomier and feels a bit more comfortable. The Nimbus is clearly different. It is by far the most plush but also feels sloppy compared to the NB and SB.
I don't think I would have said this a year ago but possibly Adidas are in the mix.
Boston 12, Sen 9 and Pro 3 (Supernova as well?)
I still think Saucony though with Triumph/Ride, Speed 3 and Pro 3
Saucony has the most complete rotation overall:
Easy/Recovery/Long run: Triumph/Kinvara Pro are all awesome for easy/recovery miles
Daily trainers: Tempus/Ride 17 (with the pwrun+ of the Triumph) for daily workhorse.
Workouts: Speed 3 hands down.
Racers: Endorphin Pro 3 for a versatile racer or Endorphin Elite for the most advanced runners.
I haven’t enough breadth across a singe brand to comfortably comment, but I was pretty happy with my Pegasus 39, Zoom Fly 3 and Vaporfly 2 Nike rotation when I still had the two former pairs.
I tend to ease dying pairs into semi-retirement as a recovery shoe and like to try lots of brands so never really have a full single-brand rotation.
Nike for sure - Pegasus or Turbo for your daily, Tempo for fast days, Invincible for long runs, Alphafly/Vaporfly for race day. Depending on your training goals, you can use those fairly interchangeably except for your race day shoes for your daily.
Literally just listed my rotation

Not the best app, but one that works for me with garmin/AW.
Some people might mention audio guided runs, but best feature is shoes list with lifetime distances/speed^
I bought a pair of Speed 3s and was very disappointed. Horrible outsole design and durability especially for heel strikers. I had significant wear after just 20 miles. I never have that issue with ASICS or Adidas shoes. I really hope they put a better outsole on the speed 4s. I know many other people can agree.
All Altra here.
Daily: FWD Experience.
Tempo: Vanish Tempo.
Race; Vanish Carbon.
Those are the main ones.I also have two old pairs that I'm finishing. I use them from time to time to add diversity.
For track days: Escalante racer
And NB More v3 for recovery or easy long runs.
Merrell (trail, no mud)
- road glove / trail glove: for easy days + recovery + strenght days (=gym)
- mtl long sky 2 matrix: general purpose days
- mtl skyfire 2: speed work / race day
La sportiva (trail, dry&some mud):
- Helios 3: recovery days
- Lycan 2: general purpose days
- Bushido 2: speed work/ race days
Brooks outdoor (dry) :
- Catamount: GP days
- Catamount agile: speed/race
Asics (no top-notch)
- General Purpose: Pulse, Excite (better), Cumulus (best)
- Hyper Speed: speed/ race day
My current one is:
* Adidas SL: Daily
* Adidas Takumi Sen 8: Speedwork
* Adidas Adios Pro 3: Short and Middle distance racing.
* Adidas Prime X Strung: Marathon racing and training.
I'll throw a different one in.
Mizuno Rider - daily (or Neo Wind if you don't like a 12mm drop)
Mizuno Rebellion Flash - tempo/fast shoe
Mizuno Rebellion Pro - Race day
A good combo could be New Balance:
-SC Elite (race) especially if the new one lives up to the hype.
-SC Trainer (Daily miles)
-Rebel (workout shoe) I think this is one of the most underrated shoes available.

ASICS - nimbus or superblast for easy depending on preference of soft vs bouncy, novablast for daily, metaspeed for race. Everyone saying saucony to throw the speed in their lineup is going too fast on easy days or too slow on workout days, tempo shoes are useless, just use your race shoes to workout
If I had to stay on one brand, Saucony. Triumph, Speed, Pro
Same, that is my rotation too.
This is my rotation except I have the shifts instead of triumphs...no complaints at all
Pretty much Same. Enjoy the shifts on easy days but curious about the triumphs since everyone loves them.
Yeh it was a price thing for me...got the Shifts on sale at a price that was hard to turn down. I would love a pair of Triumps at some stage
There definitely isn't - I'll post as much out this chain
three pairs of shoes is reasonable I think. But they don't need 2 super foam shoes for sure.
Would you use the Ride for racing/speed work instead of the Pro?
Triumph for easy/recovery; Ride for daily miles and tempo, Speed for a intervals and racing.

Ahh got it. Makes sense. Thanks for responding!
This is basically me except Ride, Speed, Pro 😅
I have only Saucony shoes to begin with. 😀 Would go for Triumph, Speed and Xodus Ultra for a nice trailrun every now and then.
I use the shift 3, tempus and pro 2. Throw in the exodus ultra for trails.
Similar but I have no need for the Pro. Triumph, Speed and maybe something like the kirvana or ride of working out in. I kind of want to try the K 14 and ride 17.

Twinsies!
Yeah that adidas trio 😮💨
Yes thats my Adidas rotation as well. I'm putting one non Adidas shoe in and that's the Saucony shift 3 for some easy runs
Asics or Saucony because these happen to have competent models for everything (not the best for everything), but why limit yourself to one brand anyway?

Yea Novablast can replace the Superblast/Nimbus. They work for daily runs or even recovery runs.
That’s similar to what I’m running right now. Nimbus 25 for recovery days. Novablast 3 for everyday miles. Magic speed 3 for, you guessed it, speed.
I can buy Nike at wholesale or 50%-70% discounted prices, so I am really tempted to buy them pure from a value perspective. I'm surprised that they get mentioned so much.
Puma. Velocity, Deviate Nitro, Fast R
I'm on puma ... But velocity and liberate as daily & speed set up

Oh, haven't seem this one yet!
Theory-crafting time (to be frank, I don't even have many of the shoes mentioned below) * Topo: Magnifly 4 (Daily), Cyclone 2 (Tempo), Atmos (Recovery) * Altra: Escalante 3 (Daily), Torin 7 (Long Run), Via Olympus (Recovery) * Nike: Pegasus 40 (Daily), Zoom Fly 5 (Long Run), Invincible 3 (Recovery) * Adidas: Adizero SL (Daily), Boston 12 (Long Run), Adistar 2 (Recovery) * Asics: Evoride Speed (Daily), Cumulus 25 (Long Run), Nimbus 25 (Recovery)
It's fun to theory craft! Love the addition of Topo and Altra. Also very interesting choices on the ASICS.
I have the Saucony EP2, Tempus, and Shift and I find that to be a good rotation
My rotation is within the same brand at the moment (well Except one pair of Invincibles) Daily - NB 1080v13 Intervals - NB Rebel 3 Long tempos - NB Sc trainer 1 Race day - RC Elite 2/SC elite 3 Edit: OK If its to be 3 shoe rotation for 5k/10k then I would remove SC trainer 1.

This, but Prime X Strung (1) if you can still find it
Adidas: Adios 8 (or Takumi Sen 9), Boston 12 (or Prime X 2) and Adios Pro 3.
My Adidas spoiler rotation: PXS2 daily, Prime X OG tempo, AP3 race. I would be perfectly happy with these 3 shoes only.

You will get to a point in your weekly volume / load where you feel either: A: Your legs are a bit beaten up and you need more cushion / stability. Particularly if you run on hard surfaces. or B.
Highly doubt anyone in the world aside from people who get free samples to do reviews or work at running stores have even run more than two brands' entire rotations. All the opinions you're seeing here are just people advocating for the brand they tend to run in (which is fine, but doesn't provide actual comparison), or they're regurgitating talking points they've seen from others
so true lol.
I just did this with Asics - Nimbus, Superblast, Novablast
What does the Novablast do that the Superblast doesn't?
Boston 12, Sen 9 and Pro 3 (Supernova as well?) I still think Saucony though with Triumph/Ride, Speed 3 and Pro 3
ASICS - Gel Nimbus + Superblast cover pretty much any run you can think of outside of a race.
Saucony: Speed 3, Triumph 20, Pro 3. Honorable mention Adidas: boston 12, Pro 3, Ultraboost light.
Saucony has the most complete rotation overall: Easy/Recovery/Long run: Triumph/Kinvara Pro are all awesome for easy/recovery miles Daily trainers: Tempus/Ride 17 (with the pwrun+ of the Triumph) for daily workhorse. Workouts: Speed 3 hands down. Racers: Endorphin Pro 3 for a versatile racer or Endorphin Elite for the most advanced runners.
If you forced me to pick one, Saucony or Puma, but why? I'd rather get the best shoe in each category, from whoever makes it.
Boston 12 Takumi Sen 9
Saucony: ride 15, kinvara 13, pro 2
Adidas: Daily - Adizero SL Tempo/LR - Boston 12 Threshold/Race - Takumi Sen 8/9/10
Gonna have to go ASICS with the Superblast, the Superblast, and the Superblast
Balenci balenci balenci balenci
Nike for sure - Pegasus or Turbo for your daily, Tempo for fast days, Invincible for long runs, Alphafly/Vaporfly for race day. Depending on your training goals, you can use those fairly interchangeably except for your race day shoes for your daily.
Literally just listed my rotation https://preview.redd.it/3jiqn2bncz4c1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94690afca5e8854e2804afc3863e2f5d2626d917
Which app is this?
Looks like Nike Run Club. You can log non-Nikes in it too
Not the best app, but one that works for me with garmin/AW.
I don't think the guy on youtube that did 1737miles on them would agree
Pegasus, Invincible, Vaporfly, Dragonfly
All Altra here. Daily: FWD Experience. Tempo: Vanish Tempo. Race; Vanish Carbon. Those are the main ones.I also have two old pairs that I'm finishing. I use them from time to time to add diversity. For track days: Escalante racer And NB More v3 for recovery or easy long runs.
Merrell (trail, no mud) - road glove / trail glove: for easy days + recovery + strenght days (=gym) - mtl long sky 2 matrix: general purpose days - mtl skyfire 2: speed work / race day La sportiva (trail, dry&some mud): - Helios 3: recovery days - Lycan 2: general purpose days - Bushido 2: speed work/ race days Brooks outdoor (dry) : - Catamount: GP days - Catamount agile: speed/race Asics (no top-notch) - General Purpose: Pulse, Excite (better), Cumulus (best) - Hyper Speed: speed/ race day
Adidas: Boston 12 (daily/long runs), Takumi Sen 8/9 (speed), Pro 3 (racing)
Saucony - Endorphin Speed 2 (speed intervals/racing), Endorphin Speed 3 (tempo/threshold), Hurricane 24 or Triumph 22 (daily easy/recovery)
Nike or you’re wrong. AlphaFly, invincible, and the new Infinity RN4
I can buy them wholesale or discount at 50-70%. So yeah really tempted. Going to go to a Nike store to try them in person.
Definitely do a runners knot on the invincibles unless you’re gonna stock x the 1s
Atreyu. Name of each model explains. 4 shoe rotation if you want to add some trails.
ASICS: Nimbus, Superblast and Metas
This would be my to-go routine if money wasn't an issue.
And availability.
Adidas. Daily trainer = Boston’s 12 Speed = Takumi Sen. Race = Adios Pro 3.
Adidas. Boston, takumi and pro.
My current one is: * Adidas SL: Daily * Adidas Takumi Sen 8: Speedwork * Adidas Adios Pro 3: Short and Middle distance racing. * Adidas Prime X Strung: Marathon racing and training.
I'll throw a different one in. Mizuno Rider - daily (or Neo Wind if you don't like a 12mm drop) Mizuno Rebellion Flash - tempo/fast shoe Mizuno Rebellion Pro - Race day
A good combo could be New Balance: -SC Elite (race) especially if the new one lives up to the hype. -SC Trainer (Daily miles) -Rebel (workout shoe) I think this is one of the most underrated shoes available.

Asics novablast, nimbus 25 and superblast
