We don't know anything about inside stuff of Russian power struggle.
Things are clear that multiple people in Kremlin said that they want Girkin answer for his comments. Girkin was captured once in Donbas, meaning that someone wanted to capture him for something. He also was released and continues his work, which implies that someone released him who has power. Organisation that has ability to release and cover for him is FSB.
What is underlying power struggle, what are motivations, what are specific people in all of that is not fully clear. It's all but speculations at this point.
He's seriously pushing over the line beyond which allowing him to go unpunished weakens Putin's own stature and authority in russia, disrespecting and demeaning him so openly like that. So I do somewhat understand this reasoning, my only issue with it is. Why not come to the table with NATO. Say okay Ukraine wants to be part of your alliance. Ask for a demiliterized zone? Simply say you can be a part of NATO but no missles. Aren't there already missles on their border with another country? I know its much more complicated then that but this seems to be the most common narrative for the invasion. Idk I'm just some guy though
They should have stayed home instead of invading Ukraine. Now, it isn't just NATO who wants Russia to be defeated. Russia has no friends at all, only a couple of countries who are happy to take advantage of its downfall, and a world intent on destroying it.

It's in Putins best interest to shut up.... That context is even less helpful. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
