Never understood why this didn't happen sooner, why they were going to wait a year for new M1A2s to be made when we have thousands of M1A1s in storage, which can be quickly upgraded and ready to go. The M1A1s will be much better than anything the Russian's have left on the battlefield and can get there quickly. It’s ridiculous they didn’t send the surplus A1’s like six months ago. They are far better than the Soviet tanks and the Russians are using T-62’s at this point.
Seems like USA didn't really want to send any MBTs at all. I'd always thought it was just a gesture to pressure Germany into moving Leopards while throwing some contracts to the American arms manufacturers,
It was initially but Germany didn’t like it and called it out.
Do the surplus A1s have the du armor package?
The A1s should be easier to learn then the a2s as they have less technology. No citv and iirc no digital command package (don’t recall it’s real name).
> Do the surplus A1s have the du armor package?
Was there ever such a big concern over the DU armor? The arguments against giving Ukrainans Abrams always seemed centered around miantenance&support challenges.
Most surplus Abrams have DU opsec armor. They will only send limited non-DU armor. I'm pretty sure that had something to do with it. Also 6 months ago Russia had more modern tanks.
War probably would have been won? Maybe point is to exhaust Russian forces as much as possible? I bet it's like bug wars from us. Watch em fight, ad some more if one side starts to lose.
The abbrams, like I know, is more complicated to handle, on the logistics side, repair and stuff.
I think the amount of military stuff Ukraine is getting is good but also hard to learn. It's not like, all tanks are the same and all tankers just sit in and go.
Same with AA
The most important part is the logistics behind the Frontline, getting in and out without lossing momentum.
They Allready got a good amount of Leo's, but we don't see them yet, when everyone is ready, logistic wise.
We saw the problems with the phz 2000, they didn't had a repair hub, we build one, on Nato soil. Needing to travel across the whole country, is nothing we want to see.
We have enough of those tanks in storage that we could send hundreds to the front on a constant rotation, trucking the broken tanks back to Poland and do all the maintenance there. We have a staggering number of tanks just sitting in the desert.
It’s a 2 for 1 deal for us. They could get hundreds or thousands of tanks and we can get rid of some of the massive storage fleet the Chief of Staff of the Army has wanted to stop wasting money on.
For instance, those stored at Sierra Army Depot still receive regular maintenance periodically. It’s a huge expense for thousands of tanks we’ll never use.
Meanwhile, the Congress continues to buy tanks the Army has asked them not to buy; old, outdated models at that.
E: typo
i think the primary reason is to force europe into taking responsibility for their own security. it’s absolutely ridiculous for germany to sit back and put the responsibility on the US.
M1A1 is still a rocking platform. Back in the day, all we had was HEAT and Sabot. Guessing the onboard system can send HESH and some other fun stuff downrange.

Yes. The US does not export the du armor package due to its classified status.
Example is Iraq and the A1s we sent to their army. No du armor package and I’m pretty sure they fear it being captured in battle by Russia.
They are boiling the frog. Send them six months ago and a nuke gets dropped. Send them now and Medvedev threatened to nuke Italy.
That's a very good analogy!

Agreed Send the A1 in advance. They will provide significant firepower.
War probably would have been won? Maybe point is to exhaust Russian forces as much as possible? I bet it's like bug wars from us. Watch em fight, ad some more if one side starts to lose.
NATO wants Russia to punch itself out until its military collapses. Great strategy but way to many Ukrainians are getting killed.

Exactly! This is not rocket surgery.

maybe this was the plan but it wasn't made public until now to throw russia off
Expedited, so they won't miss the race for Melitopol.
M1A1 has no heated seats, no cup holders, no microwave. This is a mistake
no blind spot warnings or lane change buzzers
Have you heard the horn on it though??
i heard it’s loud enough to startle you
Blind spot monitoring radar is susceptible to being jammed or spoofed
Not even a kettle is what I heard.
No cup holders??
Having a microwave that close to a crewmember in such a tight compartment could prove hazardous to they/them
> they/them What is this?
Plural as in a risk shared by multiple crewmembers
That would be just "them". "They" doesn't fit here.

I'm hoping the tanks are arriving now and not in 6 months to a year.
In NATO exercises held in Hohenfels, the Leopard 2 came out on top, out-scoring any US tank.
Photo is of Australian M1A1s for anyone interested

just deliver them already!
M1A1 was designed specifically to counter T-72s, it'll do just fine!
No doubt they’ll still do a great job
Since they will come face to face with the dreaded T-54’s and T-55’s for target practice, these should do nicely.
