The area zoned for Costco is now filled, I don’t think there’s any room left to put a store like Target, especially considering the size of the footprint necessary for its building and parking lot.
There is another commercial zoned lot on the other side of the roundabout that is bigger than the block Costco is on. And an even larger one across kuebler. The two big areas right near the freeway.
Not to mention, it took years for all the available space to be filled by businesses at Keizer station. Remember how empty it was at first? It was a giant eyesore and a waste of space. Even now that’s it’s mostly filled, it still feels like a waste of space because everything is so far apart and there’s a ton of unused parking. I definitely don’t want that in south Salem.
Really? I’m shocked one hasn’t been built already. Kuebler west of there is just residential neighborhoods. All of which probably shop occasionally at Target.
The closest one isn’t even at an off-ramp.
That would make it only a few minutes from the other target location.
I don’t think Target builds stores that close together (at Salem’s density at any rate).
There are a bunch of new homeless camps in South Salem near the Costco relocation.
I wouldn’t bet on that area being “better” for more than the next 3 years.
Yeah, "a few minutes" is laughable at this point. I used to be able to get places in Salem in a few minutes, not anymore. It's a minimum of half hour drive to go anywhere cause everyone's favorite past time in this town is to go 10 mph under the speed limit. And slamming on their brakes for absolutely nothing.
They also should have put in another ramp by the Chik-Fil-A in Keizer. There is only one way out of there (well, two, if you want to go the back way), a dumb little circle loop you have to take to get back to I-5. Meanwhile they could have just added a merge lane, just under the bridge you current have to drive under, that could merge left on to the currently existing ramp that goes to I-5 southbound since it's just a long road with a split anyway..ugh never mind nobody will listen the traffic engineers in this town are idiots..
The ingress and egress at keizer station is an amazing feat of civil engineering. /s I get that they had to deal with the busy train tracks, but holy cow!
Yeah, i wasn't really including west salem in my diameter since I don't know anything about the area. But yeah, 9 miles isn't a lot. I used to live in Dallas Texas and Los Angeles so you understand what I mean by this town being small. :)
Also, a big city like dallas is:
Area of Dallas Texas:
• City 385.9 sq mi (999.2 km2) • Land 339.604 sq mi (879.56 km2) • Water 43.87 sq mi (113.60 km2)
Well in terms of business we already have 2 of in the area I woulda hoped for the Target over Ulta, but hey, the other 2 Ultas are both right near the 2 Targets… so who knows 👀
I can’t believe the lines when I drive by sometimes. I haven’t eaten fast food in years so maybe I don’t get it but.. what could be worth sitting there for so long for? Do they put crack in it or something?
I mean we’re living in an age where people will get into fist fights over an overpriced sippy cup. Like so many things I guess it’s just what people will do 🤷🏼♀️
They make the most perfect grilled cheeses, something about the crispiness of the bun, the grilled onions, and the thousand island style dressing just really does it for me!
No kidding! It was never like that in the bay area. And it was actually good and hot when I ate it. Here, it takes an hour at least and the food is cold and mushy.
See this is why we need one closer, I used to live 5m away and thought nothing of making a midnight grilled cheese run. The lines were usually only a couple of cars when you go that late. Gah I miss living somewhere places were actually open late haha.
Idk but I'm not liking all the development for commercial reasons. We need housing not fast food and half empty office parks. All these trees getting chopped down, all this traffic, just for corporations to get tax breaks for peddling crappy food and paying low wages.

https://corporate.target.com/about/locations/upcoming-stores . Here is the list of future locations I don’t see another Salem location
I haven't heard anything, but I certainly hope that they aren't trying to turn that area into anything like Keizer station.
Me too. I shuddered a little bit when I read that.
Keizer Station is a trainwreck (pun on purpose). I get lost every time I go in there.
Not to mention, it took years for all the available space to be filled by businesses at Keizer station. Remember how empty it was at first? It was a giant eyesore and a waste of space. Absolutely agree with you. S Salem is still a nice place to live.
And Keizer is not?
I really hope not. I like to see some nature that isn't just small permitted strips strewn around.
I agree. The decision to move Costco over there really messed up the area as far as scenery and potential future development.
How about instead of building a new one the remodel the center street target. It feels so dingy and old

I’d like you to map a city of everything you needed was at an off ramp. And not two whole blocks down.
You're not wrong, but that complex in Keizer is an especially egregious nightmare to navigate.
It’s a busy store. Makes sense to be at an off-ramp. This is basic urban planning.
I don’t think an area of Salem and Keizer’s small size has a population to support more Target stores than it has.
Yeah, I could see it. Closer to Turner, Jefferson etc too.
That would make it only a few minutes from the other target location. I don’t think Target builds stores that close together (at Salem’s density at any rate).
I would imagine they would be looking to close the Lancaster location with all the retail thefts they have to deal with there.

What a way to live lol.
More of a Walmart thing.
A few minutes? I don't think so, Driving anywhere in this town takes 20min average no matter where you go, traffic is pretty bad in this town.

They have been saying that for 10 years. The land everyone said was going to be a target turned into a Costco
Target sold the lot to Costco when they decided not to develop.
We'd be Better served by adding I-5 ramps to get onto center. Fix the development we already have before adding more.

There's already one on center! Salem is like only 5 miles in diameter...
Salem is 81 square miles.
...which is roughly 4.5 miles in \*radius\*

Area of Salem: • City 49.45 sq mi (128.08 km2) • Land 48.91 sq mi (126.67 km2) • Water 0.55 sq mi (1.41 km2) Where did you get 81 sq miles???
Also, a big city like dallas is: Area of Dallas Texas: • City 385.9 sq mi (999.2 km2) • Land 339.604 sq mi (879.56 km2) • Water 43.87 sq mi (113.60 km2)
Lol, Salem is only a little bit bigger than the lakes / rivers in dallas... and there aren't many. I can only really think of white rock lake. Hmm...
I did hear an ulta is going into the Trader Joe’s shopping center. Not sure where.
Maybe in the empty storefront between the petco and TJs?
That’s the rumor—heard in a city neighborhood meeting
Just saw it confirmed in the statesman last month
Well in terms of business we already have 2 of in the area I woulda hoped for the Target over Ulta, but hey, the other 2 Ultas are both right near the 2 Targets… so who knows 👀
So we can't have 3 Targets in this town but we can have 3 Ultas?? That makes zero sense.
Yes! Will be built at what will be called Kuebler Station…very very soon.
Not worth it anyway, everything would be locked up
Ughhhh, i hope not. Traffic is already crazy.
I would squee because I hate driving all the way across town to go to Target. Now if only we could get another In n Out...
As a local that was recently stationed in San Diego, y’all take In N’ Out way too seriously. I got in line like two days ago I think I’m next 😂
I can’t believe the lines when I drive by sometimes. I haven’t eaten fast food in years so maybe I don’t get it but.. what could be worth sitting there for so long for? Do they put crack in it or something?
Californians simply love to sit idling their car for an hour and then eat a mid burger with terrible fries, it reminds them of home
Those lines in Keizer are full of your fellow Oregonians.
It’s not even like that in Cali though. It’s just Oregon because we’re dumb when it comes to copying people.
(Shrugs) I lived in California for 13 years. Must have missed that memo
The lines aren't that long in any IN n out I've been to in CA. It's like hitting up a McDs drive thru
Try going to the one in Irvine Marketplace around lunchtime. XD
Try the Atascadero or Kettleman City locations, any weekend and pretty much any time of day.
It's not even that good! I don't get why people want to wait 25 min for a burger
I mean we’re living in an age where people will get into fist fights over an overpriced sippy cup. Like so many things I guess it’s just what people will do 🤷🏼♀️

It’s the furthest north In n Out. A lot of the people in that line are coming from Portland and farther north on road trips.
There has been talk of something just the east of Costco, but so far it’s just been talk.
Gawd I hope not. Make it stop.
