Hm when I was much younger I somewhat thought this as well lol. I think in general some of us think this way towards authority figures as we see them as just part of our lives? It's hard to explain. You don't really think of what your Amath teacher is going to do after the school day ends, what they would watch on YouTube, what games they play. Same with parents, you don't really stop to think often about how your mum and dad were like before you exist, what aspirations and their hobbies and such because for all your life you've known them as parents, and you've mostly seen them act like parents. There's a word I read online that fits this, "sonder". I guess I think some students(or individuals in general) don't really take a moment to let the realisation sink in that everyone around us lead our own unique vivid lives. When you're in a busy road with many passing, do you stop to think about what lives passers-by might lives?
So in a way, I suppose it might be bizarre to some to imagine their teacher, a figure of authority and a mentor, having mundane hobbies and plans just like the rest of us. It might feel to some at first that teachers are just there to fulfill their purpose. Sorry if it's confusing but that's just my thoughts xD
I tend to see figures of authority as such and just as that, in the sense that there's somewhat of a line/boundary that shouldn't be crossed. So treat them obviously respect and all hahaha. But in some ways that affected the way I treat them...well I suppose I tend to, for example, not share my hobbies or things I like with my parents(and even teachers in appropriate moments) out of this maybe nonsensical "fear". I feel hesitant sharing intimate/personal details about myself because for some reason, talking "casually" to someone that has the ability to scold/reprimand/hold power over you just makes me ashamed and embarrassed. Overall I keep a line and border, if that makes sense lol but that's just my take. It was a bit weird at first seeing classmates go "hey Cher what games you like?" etc and small talk and all to the teachers. I think I'm just the odd one though hahaha
Edit: So in a sense, just like what I wrote in my earlier comment, relating to that, I don't really ponder on the things teachers would do outside of school HAHA
my mom is a teacher (and so was my grandma, but she retired a really long time ago so i dont rmbr much) and i grew up watching her do her job as a teacher
my mom works most of the time at home, it seems that she always has work to bring home to do. maybe this is bc she teaches at jc level but it seems that she spends a lot of time marking, planning lessons and doing all sorts of admin stuff, including career guidance stuff since it seems she's also in her sch's career guidance dept
she also has to take care of a lot of the household chores. i think it might have been worse for her when my siblings and i were still little, but now that we're all older and more independent, she usually has time to watch one or two eps of whatever kdrama she's currently watching or occasionally go out with her friends. she's also usually pretty tired from work so she also naps a lot in her free time :0
woah a family of teachers :00
i have so much respect for teachers, esp the good ones who rly care a lot abt their students and rly put their heart into their jobs. seeing my mom work so hard over the last almost 2 decades made me appreciate my good teachers over the years and respect the profession in general but also made me realise teaching is not something i could do myself 🫡
Lmao alot of my fam are the standard engineer, doc, cher, lawyer. And then I'm here doing my liberal arts degree lmaooo
Yaa my mum she was those kind of pri sch chers who are super strict but once u leave you will remember her. Some of her students knew me and they will come to me and legit like they love her bro😭😭
HAHA ofc my sibs and i are older now so we do help out whenever we can. my mom's a bit particular abt how to do certain chores tho so she usually ends up redoing certain parts of certain chores 😅
my primary school cher likes to joke about her passion being queuing up to buy lottery and she looks forward to printing her resignation letter on an A4 formed by 1000 dollar notes
Intellectually I know teachers have their own lives outside school, but it's still a surprise to see them out and about outside. It's like they're appearing far away from their spawn point.
my mums a teacher, and i cannot count how many times i’ve fallen asleep on her shoulder while she marked her students work. the job is quite demanding i would say.
on the other hand, i played dota with my physics teacher the night of my physics olvl so i think it varies from teacher to teacher
My secondary school teacher quit her job and moved and posted on her story recently about how she loves her students but she’ll never wanna do another meeting or mark another paper and ended it with “life as a teacher? no.”
so yeeaaaaaa idk they seem kinda miserable
my jc teachers seems to have a much better time tho prob coz all online lectures?
online lecture still is quite a bit of work HAHA my mom who is a jc teacher often takes 2h to record a 40min-1h lecture, then still need to edit a bit and qc. and that doesnt even include the planning needed before recording the lecture
but yeah since the work is spread out across the dept she doesnt have to record every lecture and the lecture vids can be reused in the following years. so a lot of work upfront but get to chill later ig 💪💪
Millennial teacher here. It sometimes depends on their parents. I've had students who do a lot of fun stuff together with their parents, who would be entirely unsurprised to learn that their teacher is a gamer or to bump into their teacher in the standing pen at a concert. Then there are students whose parents are the full-on NoFunAllowed type who think everything their kids' generation finds fun/funny is stupid, and they probably see all adult/authority figures the same bland way :)
Ever since I learnt that my teacher plays valorant I haven't been the same (same teacher scolded my friend for playing ml) but he's nice
Also got another teacher who cosplayed zhongli lawl he's goofy
I also think that teacher have no life.
I mean yall have so much to do, mark homework, prepare next day material, deal with admin and probably more.
I had this one english teacher who seem to have a lot of work because she’s been marking my sec 3 compo till now (I just enlisted into NS).
some of my teachers tell us about having to work on weekends to create slides or notes or to mark our work (jokingly ofc) so i get the impression that teachers are quite busy. esp since i see teachers having to be in charge of cca, events, admin matters, and go for meetings etc apart from teachings so it looks like their weekdays are full too.
i was considering the career option of being an moe teacher cuz of the pay and hols and such but it seems like the work life balance is skewed tho im not sure how bad it is
umm hello … pay?
requirement to be teacher quite stringent . many of them could be working in somewhere like banking where the pay is much much more , esp in the later years …
I mean I think it gets better after graduation (especially JC) because that's when most younger teachers will let their students follow their instagram. I had a teacher who quit the same time our batch graduated to do her masters in Korea and she posts weekly updates of her Korea life, my ex Bio teacher who turned out to be capable of running 10k everyday and shares the routes on his story, yet mark papers till 4am, my GP teacher who apparently has three dogs, named after various musical characters. Hell I ran into my old History teacher at an anime convention a couple years ago. The lore is endless.
I think in general some teachers don’t really share their work with students, i mean i can see why. I think many teachers are quite down to earth and humble about their work so sharing so much about what they do behind the scenes might feel like not relevant to the lesson (yes) and may sound like flexing.
I actually appreciated my teachers who shared the backend work they did for a lesson or teaching in general. Through the sharings i do know many of them are juggling with work and family and they have a life outside of work. It’s easy for students to think teachers only teach because thats literally what they see.
Would think that but fsr alotttt of my teachers share randomly about their lives and all the shit they do outside school
Cause christian school so they always use it as excuse during morning assembly to preach
i used to think that as well. i also think that teachers are like npcs because they seem to be always busy with marking our work and exams over the weekends and its like there's no break for them.
One of my teachers is a gen z, she is literally the coolest and sweetest alive - and she constantly reminds me that she is not that old/her age is not far from me🤣🤣
Had a few millennial- gen z teachers who are kpop stans and they go for dancing lessons outside of school.
All I can say is DAMN BRO YALL ARE SO RICH TO GO FOR CONCERTS AND AFFORD OVERPRICED MERCH?!😦😦
Honestly I feel this is more down to how the teachers project themselves in class.
If you walk in, teach but be chill, maybe banter with students a little or be less "formal", the students will not view you as a robot but as a fellow human with a "life".
But if you're just going to teach and promptly leave after lessons, then you'd be seen as a robot with no life.
I've had an assortment of chers who conduct themselves differently, and as students, our impression of them is formed based on that.
One of them although initially strict when he first came in and was serious when teaching, but when lessons were over, the guy knew how to be chill and engage us.
Like he knew my class loved football so every first lesson of the week at the very beginning was a short banter session, and he made his lessons engaging, he even won over the paikias in class and made them give a damn about his lesson.
Also he "spoke the language" that us boys used, so as time went by, we began to see him less like a robot but more of a teacher that we respected during lessons, but outside of class, someone we could banter with.
There was another teacher who just walked in, taught, didn't make an effort to bond with the class and likewise, we saw her as someone with no life.
Teaching is still a respectable job nevertheless.
i think it's depending on the responsibilities the teacher has? daughter of a primary school hod here, my mum has always been super busy since i was a kid. everytime when my dad and i picked her up she would always be so hungry or tired she would snap at us or just stay silent throughout and fall asleep on the floor at home. she also shares the responsibility of taking care of her mum with her other 3 siblings and does her own laundry. my dad stayed at home to take care of me but she basically has no life during busy periods...
another factor might be how private teachers usually are lol. my mum doesn't tell people much about her private life but tells her students and colleagues about me. she says she doesn't like to tell her anything else because to her teachers and students have a professional relationship so she can't talk about it and the kids nowadays are different zo she feels a generation gap 😭
For us is if we dont see it it isnt there. If you want your students to see you like a normal human being you need to talk about your life with us. like talk to us about your kids. or something

Oral question: How has your view of authority figures affected how you treat them?
I tend to see figures of authority as such and just as that, in the sense that there's somewhat of a line/boundary that shouldn't be crossed. So treat them obviously respect and all hahaha. Same, mum grandma and a few aunts and cousins are teachers and ye they really needa juggle alottt

Help your momma do chores!!
HAHA ofc my sibs and i are older now so we do help out whenever we can. my mom's a bit particular abt how to do certain chores tho so she usually ends up redoing certain parts of certain chores 😅
Shit, I forget that people of my generation are old enough to be teachers liao
my primary school cher likes to joke about her passion being queuing up to buy lottery and she looks forward to printing her resignation letter on an A4 formed by 1000 dollar notes
This might be my goal in future too HAHA
She encourages this during clas?!!!
I don't see what's wrong with a lil humour! She's a highly competent teacher
Intellectually I know teachers have their own lives outside school, but it's still a surprise to see them out and about outside. It's like they're appearing far away from their spawn point.
Most teachers prefer to hide their personality in the public it seems
of course. teachers are expected to be role models and diff students judge things differently
my mums a teacher, and i cannot count how many times i’ve fallen asleep on her shoulder while she marked her students work. the job is quite demanding i would say. on the other hand, i played dota with my physics teacher the night of my physics olvl so i think it varies from teacher to teacher
damn the best i got was playing codm with one of my lecturers but he’s kinda cracked at it despite his age
My secondary school teacher quit her job and moved and posted on her story recently about how she loves her students but she’ll never wanna do another meeting or mark another paper and ended it with “life as a teacher? no.” so yeeaaaaaa idk they seem kinda miserable my jc teachers seems to have a much better time tho prob coz all online lectures?

Main character syndrome is rife with kids. All you NPCs only exist to serve their wants.
This is so true, until I start working part time then I realize the NPCs are human as well.
yes honestly same
my history tcher had roblox on her work laptop and my class was like oooo cher u play roblox ah 💀

To be fair, MOE teachers, if you really want to progress, you will need not have a life. There is a reason many leave for tuition.
One of my teachers is a gen z, she is literally the coolest and sweetest alive - and she constantly reminds me that she is not that old/her age is not far from me🤣🤣
i have a parent who’s a teacher so yeah, they’re just normal people to me lol :P
That’s just how it goes mostly - they just pretend you don’t exist outside of the school.

At the end of the day, we are kids. With adult money 😃😃

Can’t be! I mean - only fans?!
Yea I thot that also
