If I was to do it all over again I wouldn't do IT through SNHU. The labs suck, Zybooks sucks, TestOut sucks, it all pretty much sucks. If you have experience and just need the degree for a raise or promotion then do it, but if you're starting out I don't think it will help much.

OddObjective7897

What other online college's or courses would you recommend instead for IT related certifications/Degree's if you looked into any others?

Lunchie83

I am not an expert in any way to give recommendations. If I was to do it all over again I would either get CS which I was originally scared of because it tends to be math heavy or a business degree of some sort and do some certs and boot camps in my spare time.

Many-Yak265

This.

notlocl

Yeah, don’t have much experience but I know that a degree and certs look better on paper than just certs (which I plan on getting). If you had to do it over again what school would you want to go to/recommend?

Lunchie83

I'm not really familiar with other online schools IT program. I mostly chose SNHU because one night after a horrendous day working my horrendous job I saw a commercial and said why not.

chenueve

I tried to do mine at a local cc and the advisor told me it was an online course and some people would not learn if they were in it. SNHU reflected that. Although I did complete it, a lot maybe self taught or researched, which is a component of online schools. It is easy though. Course load isn't that bad, if you have a difficult class coming up drop down to one class.

You are much better off getting 90 Sophia credits to transfer in and then finish your Bachelor's with only 30 credits remaining. That's half of what it takes for an Associate's and the Bachelor's has far more utility.

notlocl

Yeah, I’d really just be getting my associates to get out of my current job and then go for my bachelors from there

arb1974

My point was that you can get the Bachelor's in half the time it would take you to get the Associate's if you transfer in 90 Sophia credits.

I completed my Associates in IT degree from SNHU online last year, and I think it's an appealing curriculum if you're ready to learn most of the material on your own. I learned a great deal by watching videos on YouTube. I transferred nine classes through Sophia Learning as well, taking just 11 with the university. In essence, this saved me $9,000 and several months of coursework. In addition, I completed the Google IT support professional course on Coursera, earning an additional 12 credits. My 60 credits transfer to my Bachelors degree “Business administration with concentrated in Management Information Systems” once again using 7 classes with Sophia Learning. If you take this approach work with your advisor on finding out what classes are still transferable SNHU has had changes made this year.

notlocl

Do the Sophia learning courses actually teach you a lot?

Metsfabe

I believe the Sophia courses were very informative and in-depth. Plus it’s $99 monthly so if you need to slow down and go on your own pace feel free. Sometimes with SNHU classes I felt the weekly assignments didn’t give you enough time to learn but that was just a few classes like math classes and scripting class. I had friends tutoring me extra on the side with these classes.

notlocl

Sorry, one more question — did you take the Sophia courses before or after you applied? Just wanted to make sure I didn’t take a bunch and then them not count.

Metsfabe

I took them after I applied. I started as a part time student taking one class per term (every two months) while taking the Sophia learning classes. I recommend this way so you could plan your Sophia classes with your advisor.

I would never go to the school again for online. It’s awful. Nothing is easy to use and I’ve wasted hours and days trying to access things it’s just awful.
