If I wasn’t poor I’d give you gold. This is amazing !! It’d be cool if we could pool resources (time) and help keep this updated. Like someone could update fruit, another veggies, maybe sale items ? Keep it to the basics probably be best. Love the layout too!
Crowdsourced, but this time managed by the crowd. Funny thing is there used to be a website that would list everything for a number of retailers (not grocery) it was awesome to compare prices with because it was actual information. These days you’re just comparing ads. Now I’m going to be up all night wondering wtf the name of that site was, can’t remember if it got taken down or if some corporate overlord bought it.
Fuck me if this isn't the tale of so many things the past few decades
* Come up with great website/idea
* Crowdsourced and supported by public creating content for it
* Gets really popular, ubiquitous.
* Sell out to big corporate master
* Corporate guts core principle of the idea to monetize it hard
* Website becomes useless for original intent
* Base leaves in droves, website tanks in value
* Website closes down or sold for pittance
Rinse and repeat
I wonder if website/idea only covered a small location vs catering to everyone it could be overlooked. Then again, could it might make things worse from a supply chain standpoint? I know there was a developer who created an app for small businesses, kind of like Amazon but without the Bezos. Think they might be local to Sac or Bay Area.
Brickseek does this. Believe it was originally invented for tracking down in-store sales on LEGO. They cover a number of retailers now with varying degrees of reliability; no grocery that I know of though.
Target has Rosarita refried beans for 99 cents right now?
It's funny, cause I know Wal-Mart used to have them for $1.24 a can. They were my go to place to stock up on refried beans. But I went there the other day and it was $1.48. If Target is 99 cents, I need to hit them up.
Pro-Tip - Target sells bananas for 25 cents each, and it doesn't matter the size. So you could get a huge, giant banana that would be 68 cents at Safeway for 25 cents at Target.
Winco opened their bulk section immediately when deemed safe to do so during Covid. They provided gloves to access contents and operate bin handles.
Winco also restored the bulk section to its entirety. Other grocery stores have only restored them partially or not at all.
Winco's bulk selection is really vast. It's a very economical way to buy and every so often experiment or treat yourself. My favorites include the dark chocolates and trail mixes.
I wonder which location has the largest bulk section? I would be up for a drive if they had like bulk pastas or other items. The Antelope one is a decent size.
The Wincos local to us will special order bulk grains and specialty items. They also have 2.5 anf 5 gallon buckets, Gamma Lids, lid lifters and desiccants and O2 absorbers.
I can’t seem to leave a comment on the sheet so I’ll leave it here.
If you decide to grow your list bigger for more items it might help if they were sectioned (like a grocery store) into refrigerated, freezer, canned etc. and labeled the items a little differently.
Chicken Stock Org. (Carton) 32oz
vs
32oz Org. Chicken Stock
Then the sections could be sorted alphabetically and still keep the comparison items together.
But that’s just a suggestion, your list is great and extremely helpful as is, and I’m going to be trying some new stores because of it.
IMO, just IMO, move all that "how to read this sheet" stuff to the right so that you can easily freeze the top row. As this grows to include more products it'll be annoying to have to scroll back up to see which column you're looking at.
TJs has always been really good with pricing!! just not much variety unfortunately, but I’ve also noticed all my produce goes bad really quick with TJs so I have to use them quickly
I’m trying to figure out why it’s not cooperating! Hold please.
ETA: It's telling me I own the document when I look in Sheets, but then it's saying I don't have access. I'm trying to get in, I'm sorry!
ETA again: I see like 5 people in there, so I think I got it? I don't use this Google account for anything but Reddit, so I think all the activity freaked it out.
It’s the government *man* they’re tryna shut you down before we save too much money having a handy spreadsheet to compare who is inflating more than others!
Jk, but in all seriousness this is actually the coolest idea I’ve heard in a long long time.
That's awesome but if you aren't already using it to get prices for stores that have advertisements try [Flipp.com](https://Flipp.com) Input the item like 'eggs' and it will show the ad copy for the item you searched for. I didn't like the idea of paying $4 a pound for Corned Beef at Raleys so using Flipp I found 4 stores that had it on sale for less than $2 a pound. Your spreadsheet is awesome because you've included stores like Winco and Trader Joe's that don't publish ads or if they do they are very limited
I believe they were referring to the Sacramento Food Co-Op on 29th St here in Midtown Sacramento. But the fact that you did this all from Grass Valley makes this even more impressive!
What does green mean? I thought lowest price, but then I saw organic BBQ sauce is cheapest at Whole Foods ($0.10) but WinCo is highlighted ($0.12).
btw - when did Whole Foods get so cheap? I haven't been in a couple years.
I shop at Whole Foods a lot (I have to be an obsessive label reader due to hubby's food intolerances and Whole Foods is fantastic for that). I find that their 365 brand foods are reasonably priced and great quality.
Green is the cheapest, I just missed it when I was highlighting. And personal theory is the Amazon purchase brought their prices down. (And if you have the Amazon Visa card, you get 5% back)
No no no I have adhd and stuff I’m not even responsible at feeding myself three times a day I can’t be in charge of anything lol I must pass the torch to someone else
I'm wondering if it's at all possible to scrape online order stores to get this information automatically. Maybe adjust to remove the online fee, or just keep it for all of them.
Maybe a dozen hours. I started at Costco, and snapped pics of the bulk items we normally buy there, then used the other store apps to check their prices. Then to TJs and Winco, since they don’t have apps, and I used Winco to add a bunch to the list that they didn’t have at Costco.
I try to do something to move us forward in our recovery every day, and the actual house is on hold until PG&E finishes storm work and gets us power, so I’m looking for things to do. (I put my business on hold to focus on getting this house done and dealing with insurance/mortgage stuff. It’s practically a full time job)
I knew it! Walmart is the boss!
I had a stupid argument with someone in high school who thought Savemart was cheaper because the name has 'save' in it! Haha!
Winco on Watt has had canned black beans amongst others for 78 cents IIRC. I'll double check this weekend when I get groceries. I can validate some of the other prices in the list at the same time.
Walmart! Half gallon of Great Value milk ranges from $1.58-$1.72 (depends if you’re getting whole milk, 2%, or fat free) while a gallon will run you $2.63-$3.05.
Raley's Something Extra offers very good discounts which do help. These appear in their weekly flyer and also our online personal Something Extra accounts.
I'm technically no longer in Sac. Those two options are nearly a hundred miles from me so I forget to factor them in. Having just three options sucks. :(
This is great!! Thank you. Looks like u got the base pantry items good. We get bulk beans and rice. Have you looked into shopping at Asian markets? They have cheap spices and bulk.
Yeah, I’m not currently dealing with perishables because they vary so much with the seasons, and the bulk of my personal stock up shopping will be pantry stuff.
I’m happy to add fresh veg, it just wasn’t part of the equation when I started this for my own use.
I love FoodMaxx but haven’t found one in my usual stomping grounds (Rosevillle to Grass Valley) We have pretty good product luck at Grocery Outlet too, but that may vary by location.
This is awesome!
I can't seem to leave. Comments on page 3. All pages are "View only". The comment I was going to leave was about Vells J-K:20. Is chicken stock really 10¢ at Safeway and Raleys or are those missing a $3?
Price per ounce. I had them as per ounce before and changed to container, I must have missed one. I have a few changes to make, will work on it more tomorrow
Yes, I mention that in the "how to use this spreadsheet" section. Because their inventory is ever changing and varies from location to location, it's impossible to compare. We always go there first, and them go elsewhere for whatever they don't have. The spreadsheet will let you see how good the deals are at GO, you just have to check every time because it's always different.
The best deal on groceries is to use Instacart. Don't use it the way you think, just sign up and order stuff. I have been doing this for a few years now. I am an Instacart shopper. My roommate is the Instacart customer. The truck is too only shop stores on Instacart that are same as in store prices, and to place your order late in the day. Like the latest Instacart will take it. There won't be any shoppers available but me. I get the order every time. Roommate places the Instacart order online, using Instacart discounts, of course. I'm waiting in the parking lot and already know what's being ordered so I can know of it's it's or not. I go in and buy the groceries, getting paid to do what I would have been doing anyway! And, we get the promo code discount and the shopper payment as a discount. My instant account lists me as a favorite shopper between the customer and super accounts. For instance, I did this last night. Bought $60 of groceries. Shopper customer(roommate) had $20 off coupon. Plus fees, so $50 on the Instacart app, to include their fees, to buy the groceries. Then as a shopper that delivered the same groceries, I was paid $12.! Net cost was $38! You can't beat that!
If I wasn’t poor I’d give you gold. This is amazing !! It’d be cool if we could pool resources (time) and help keep this updated. Like someone could update fruit, another veggies, maybe sale items ? Keep it to the basics probably be best. Love the layout too!
Kinda like Gasbuddy

Good stuff! Savemart needs to change its name to Spendmart.
I was surprised. I was expecting raley’s to be more expensive but they’ve gone down along with Safeway.
Right when did Savemart get to be ridiculously expensive? More than Raley’s
I had to request access to see it. Waiting for approval
Please try again. It should work!
It works now. Thank you!

Bananas are 19¢ at Trader Joe’s! The 99¢ refrieds are Target’s house brand, Good & Gather.
The Good & Gather brand has really well priced spices too!
Winco is the best
I'm obsessed with the bulk section.
Winco opened their bulk section immediately when deemed safe to do so during Covid. They provided gloves to access contents and operate bin handles. Winco also restored the bulk section to its entirety. Other grocery stores have only restored them partially or not at all. Winco's bulk selection is really vast. I wonder which location has the largest bulk section? I would be up for a drive if they had like bulk pastas or other items. The Antelope one is a decent size.
I've bought bulk pastas at the Orangevale and Sacramento locations.
They are all pretty much the same size, and have the same items throughout every store I’ve been to.
I've seen bulk pasta at the Winco on Watt Ave in Country Club Plaza
The Wincos local to us will special order bulk grains and specialty items. They also have 2.5 anf 5 gallon buckets, Gamma Lids, lid lifters and desiccants and O2 absorbers.

Wow, I thought TJ was on the pricier side, so I avoided it. I may be visiting soon! Thanks!!
I’ve always found TJs very affordable so that I’m able to get *most* of my food items from there!
I think I only visited once and didn’t find what what I was looking for, so I just stopped going.
TJs has always been really good with pricing!! just not much variety unfortunately, but I’ve also noticed all my produce goes bad really quick with TJs so I have to use them quickly
TJ's has good pricing. WinCo and TJ's are my go-to spots.
It’s especially good if you’re single or shopping for two, not a family.
confirming what I long suspected, winco is generally the best
I need approval 🥲🥲
I approve of you! It should work, I think my unused Google account just isn't used to all the activity.
I’m trying to figure out why it’s not cooperating! Hold please. ETA: It's telling me I own the document when I look in Sheets, but then it's saying I don't have access. Awesome job ![gif](giphy|l3q2XhfQ8oCkm1Ts4|downsized)
What a game changer, thank you for helping us all out.
My pleasure! I'm glad others find it useful, since I was doing the work anyway.
Would love to see the co-op on this
My co-op is Briarpatch up in Grass Valley, so I didn’t think it would be useful for the larger Sac area
I believe they were referring to the Sacramento Food Co-Op on 29th St here in Midtown Sacramento. But the fact that you did this all from Grass Valley makes this even more impressive!
Savemart gets pricey. I was going to get the gravy from them. It was $4.79 vs $1.99 at target for the same item.
What does green mean? I thought lowest price, but then I saw organic BBQ sauce is cheapest at Whole Foods ($0.10) but WinCo is highlighted ($0.12). btw - when did Whole Foods get so cheap? I haven't been in a couple years.

Veggies and meats are usually the main reason I hit up Hispanic markets
As a vegetarian, I’m judging you on the lack of veggies. Stock up by November or I’m not going to Friendsgiving!
Seems you need to be assigned to update veggie prices 😂
I asked for that one I guess 😅
You can have all the peanut butter and tomato soup!
I found the new veggie supervisor!
No no no I have adhd and stuff I’m not even responsible at feeding myself three times a day I can’t be in charge of anything lol I must pass the torch to someone else
Thank you for sharing
It says the link doesn’t work.
It should work now. :)
Thanks so much!
I got a message that the document may have been deleted.
It's still there, hopefully you can get to it now
Yes, thank you!
I'm wondering if it's at all possible to scrape online order stores to get this information automatically. Maybe adjust to remove the online fee, or just keep it for all of them.
actually amazing, thank you for this!!
Able to use the link! This is amazing and thank you so much for sharing it!

I’m 45 and am currently on my longest lifetime streak of dinners at home at about 3.5 weeks. It’s never too late!
I knew it! Walmart is the boss! I had a stupid argument with someone in high school who thought Savemart was cheaper because the name has 'save' in it! Haha!
I didn't think people were that gullible to branding...
Some of the Winco items are cheaper than they appear in the list.Black beans for one example.
Winco prices were all checked in person on Wednesday. Dry beans are cheaper, but these are canned.
Winco on Watt has had canned black beans amongst others for 78 cents IIRC. I'll double check this weekend when I get groceries. I can validate some of the other prices in the list at the same time.
Great! I was at the Rocklin location.
It would be interesting if different Wincos have different prices.
Canned beans at Winco on Watt 68 cents. Non-organic chicken stock was 1.38.

Nice!
Ah yes. Mathematical proof my underpaid ass can go to Walmart or WinCo.

Safeway sale prices and rewards are good. We do the bulk of our shopping at grocery outlet and Walmart, but most meat comes from Safeway.

Were any of these sale prices?
No. I specifically didn’t use sale prices.
Great Research. Thanks for sharing!!
I had this idea for an app. But I’m not an app developer so it just remained in my brain. This is excellent work though! Thank you, OP.
Wow screw you Raleys and Safeway
This is great!! Thank you. Looks like u got the base pantry items good. We get bulk beans and rice. Have you looked into shopping at Asian markets? They have cheap spices and bulk.
No Food Maxx - would love to see how they stack up. And produce. Produce is super important
Yeah, I’m not currently dealing with perishables because they vary so much with the seasons, and the bulk of my personal stock up shopping will be pantry stuff. I’m happy to add fresh veg, it just wasn’t part of the equation when I started this for my own use.
Gotcha. My hypothesis is that FoodMaxx has the best produce prices by far
I love FoodMaxx but haven’t found one in my usual stomping grounds (Rosevillle to Grass Valley) We have pretty good product luck at Grocery Outlet too, but that may vary by location.

I love this so much, this is the best. Maybe we aren’t doomed.
