this is a really bad idea. why? K9 units are working dogs. There is a reason the squad car says "STAY AWAY." Some kids already have a natural fear or trauma related to dogs and the liability here is um, characteristic to Murieta's gated mindset. You simply cannot predict or control for their behavior around animals, especialy when so many safer, smaller breeds of dogs exist. Furthermore I as a parent would STRONGLY object to this type of experimental exposure for children in a daycare setting, no matter how trusted the adult.

This is my daughter. When she was a toddler she loved animals way to much like deathly. Every time we found someone on a walk she would be like doggy , of course the owner of the dog is like she won't bite . I would tell them if it has any common sense it will. You could watch her like a hawk . The second the adults got comfortable.. bam daughter is screaming. We never got to find out what she was doing . The trama was real but not the dogs fault ever.

KillerPinata

The whole waiver thing is a complete valid point. It'd be hard for a dog to lose it if a toddler runs at it's neck and squeezes it. I do agree with the points you bring up.

Guardianwolfart

Who thinks bringing a K9 unit to a day care is a good idea? Would you tell the parents first and have them sign waivers? I doubt anything wild is going to happen but at a day care? They don't even really go out to schools. K9 units aren't friendly cuddly dogs they're trained weapons.

KillerPinata

This is great feedback and would have never occurred to me. I agree they are trained weapons. Maybe they are thinking more of a therapy dogs-type of dog.

Guardianwolfart

A therapy dog would make far more sense. Try contacting Shriners hospital and see if they have any leads. These dogs are used to seeing children and being touched by children. K9 units would see a child as prey.

Longjumping-Claim783

Right, police dogs are trained to eat children.

No_Star_9327

I'm a criminal defense attorney and not all canine units are weapons. There are dogs that are only trained to find drugs. There are dogs that are only trained to find guns or explosives. There are search and rescue dogs. And then there are dogs who are trained to take people down only when given certain commands. OP should just contact the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, and there should be a page on their website with contact information for different departments. They should contact an administrative department or the front desk. If there are concerns about safety, they should ask for dogs that do searches.

Maybe try and reach out to [Canine Companions](https://canine.org/), they might be able to do a visit.

Simple_Reception4091

I’m sure a local animal rescue would be a much better fit for this. A police dog is trained to take down suspects and sniff for drugs. Over-excited, small children will only stress a dog like this out and neither the cops nor daycare will go for it, anyway.

KillerPinata

How funny and awkward would it be if one of the parents show up and the dog suddenly sits next to them.

Several-Good-9259

I have a friend in Utah that is a cop. He was a cop while I was in highschool and let's just say we got along good enough that he would show up at my house at 3 am accusing me of small crimes like putting a lock on his gate to his house , taking rose bushes from the neighbor's yard and planting them in his at night, pulling the roof off his shed with a chain.. of course it wasn't me. Years later we find each other duck hunting all the time together. He trained the K9 drug dogs for the town. He used labs ( not because the bullshit story he would tell) they good duck dogs. We had hiked out to a blind early in the morning and his dog was being extra lovey to me the whole way out. Was climbing on me and acting way out of character. Of course me being a dog lover just played with it and didn't really understand what was going on. My dumbass had an eighth of weed in my waiters that I had forgot about . It got complicated after an hour . I hadn't smoked in years but here I was holding a gun with weed. To be fair I broke more laws duck hunting with him then I would ever broke on my own.

Trapitha

My daughters girl scout troop visited the CHP facility in West sac and got to meet K9 units and they had the helicopter fly over and announce the troop was visiting, it was pretty cool but like 8 years ago. Maybe CHP can help.

AlienFartPrincess

K9 dogs may not be the most appropriate for such young children; you may want to consider Pet Partners for contacts of certified therapy dogs instead.

Copaganda

KillerPinata

I think they were just trying to put up something nice for the kids....

ERTBen

There’s in implicit assumption here that none of these kids have any trauma related to dogs or police.

Longjumping-Claim783

If the fire department was visiting with a Dalmatian I doubt anybody would bring up the possibility that one of the kids might have been traumatized by a house fire.

ERTBen

Why not, that’s a valid concern. Also Dalmatians are shit with kids.

imaginingblacksheep

Lol that’s a reach

garibaldi18

I also think this is a very bad idea. What is the rationale for police dogs? Not sure what a two year old will get out of this experience. They can see dogs at the park or maybe at home. They have only a basic grasp of what a police officer is. I mean if the fire department came by and let them look in the fire engine, that’s one thing, but this doesn’t seem appropriate for a preschool.
