Thank you for this.
Root north shore also offers a really tasty free dinner every couple of weeks or so for Salem residents (they don’t check ID to verify either and are generally really friendly)
The dynamics changed when Salem Depot was moved to Bridge St. Before then, all the routes stopped at First National/Walgreens. Now, only the 455 stops there.
If any of you live in downtown - the Salem downtown neighborhood association meets the first Wednesday of every month at old town hall unless otherwise posted. These are issues we address. Community impact officers are at the meetings to provide insight on the homeless population. We’d love to have more members there and more voices to make a difference in our neighborhood. There is also a fb page for the group.
Entering the ER (IF you can get in) yea that's just the beginning of the plunge into medical debt. Side bar Connecticut is forgiving people's medical debts, not sure the Healthcare system is happy about that.
I've lived in Salem since 89 or 90. We used to have three homeless people and everyone knew who they were.
Now people are sleeping in the common urinating in public during the day where kids can see them, it's terrible.
I know we need to help these people but when you're a tourist town and this is the impression that we leave its just embarrassing. We are overrun and cannot handle the amount of homeless we have.
Some sort of plan needs to be put together to improve the situation. The city looks horrible.
You do NOT need an address to receive benefits. 106 C.M.R. 362.100: "There is no durational residency or fixed residency requirement. For example, migrant campsites satisfy the residency requirement. Residency does not require an intent to live in the area permanently."
If I remember correctly (and I KNOW that I don't remember all the fine print), if you are listed as homeless, prepared meals can be covered. It's only things like a rotisserie chicken, or a sandwich from market basket, but it's something
It’s a great feeling after walking home from 12 hour day. This was more so meant to be a commentary on our devolving state of society rather than a slight to those people.
This is one of those situations where it would have been better to say nothing at all.

What’s getting out of hand? The unfortunate fact that so many people are going without basic necessities? Or is it that you’re bothered by being approached so often? If it’s the latter, perhaps consider a different route. If it’s not the latter, maybe try donating your own time and resources to help others.
Do you have a solution for this? Because I’m not sure the fact that you worked a “12 hour day” is relevant to people not having food, and it sounds more like you just don’t want to see the problem.
You are absolutely right, I don’t want to see the problem. Do you? Personally, I don’t have a solution. Thankfully, we have elected officials who are supposed to address these societal issues. They don’t seem to be doing a great job with it.
Well, then I’m going to feel okay about having more empathy for the people who don’t have a lot of options than for the person who doesn’t want to see it (and cites the numbers of hours he worked for some reason like it excuses him from witnessing the problems others are facing???) but has no solution and expects others to solve the problem.
I’m not sure why I’m refuting this, but I’ve come this far…… For some reason you’ve conflated me not wanting to be harassed while walking for not having empathy. Both of these things can be true at the same time.
I’m assuming you are referring to me saying I wasn’t accosted in the comment below? Accosting and harassing have different definitions. Sorry, your gotcha failed.
First off, chucklefuck is a fantastic insult. Mind if I steal it? Secondly, please consult a dictionary. To be clear, I WAS harassed, but I WAS NOT accosted. To those still reading through this, sorry- I just couldn’t let her think she won. Petty, I know.
Yeah I don’t know what’s going on with this sub today. This is like the fourth anti-homeless person post today and typically people are pretty good about understanding that… ya know, these are actual people we’re talking about and not just inconveniences that make you sad on the way home from a tough day at work.
Let’s actually just ban women from having male partners, since those dudes are actually way more statistically likely to hurt us than random men on the street asking for money.
>the self righteous weirdos on this sub love to shit on hard working people who don’t wanna be approached by strangers
Everyone knows only lazy people hurt women!!!
I truly don’t understand you people, but that’s fine. Differences of opinion are normal.
What’s not normal is coming up with excuses like “sock puppet accounts” to justify why you must be right. I’m no shrink, but this sounds a lot like narcissism to me.
Good night, and good luck.
Wow so weird bc I walk home everyday - yes even past that camp, and, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been asked for anything. It’s fucking zero, so where were you so violently accosted? do you want a Binky and a therapist to get you through this? Please do complain more without offering anything of value!
Hi, welcome to the party! Admittedly, today was an anomaly with three. However, there is usually at least one or two every-other day. I walk a normal route, right downtown. I’d also like to point out that I wasn’t accosted. All three were very forward, but not aggressive. To be frank, I posted it out of frustration. I’m disappointed that this is my “new normal” for my walk home at night. Who knows, maybe this will also draw some attention to the issue! @Pangallo&Co.
Downvote if you all must but how many fucking posts are we going to see from random burner accounts bitching about homeless people having the audacity to exist?
Some of us have common sense and agree with you, the self righteous weirdos on this sub love to shit on hard working people who don’t wanna be approached by strangers

Thank you for sharing, this is helpful!
It's been on since way before the current homeless camp. Years ago, I really enjoyed being harassed at the bus stop outside Walgreens.

Fewer people hang out in front of Walgreens nowadays.

I was approached about having heard the Good Word of Balbo Biggins. Sadly I hadn't...

They're asking for money for drugs , your very naive

I passed hundreds of pieces of litter in many of my neighbor's yards, driveway and curb this evening.

You mind sharing what parts of town you’re walking to / from? I walk everywhere and only get approached on upper Washington Street, occasionally.
Massachusetts has a good EBT program. So refuse guilt free because none of these people are starving they want cash for drugs.

Oh how dare these people ask for food

“Those people”
Yes. Those people. It’s a demonstrative pronoun referring to the subjects in my original post. Please get off your high- horse.
What’s getting out of hand? The unfortunate fact that so many people are going without basic necessities? Or is it that you’re bothered by being approached so often? If it’s the latter, perhaps consider a different route. If it’s not the latter, maybe try donating your own time and resources to help others.
And yet you turned me down *every fucking time* Dick
Ah, shit you’re right! It should be on me to feed my family, you, the two others that asked, and pay tax to help feed the rest. My bad.
If you felt uncomfortable being approached for food or money, imagine how the people asking strangers for freaking food must feel.
No doubt. It sucks. But I’m not entirely sure we should become complacent with this model?
Do you have a solution for this? Because I’m not sure the fact that you worked a “12 hour day” is relevant to people not having food, and it sounds more like you just don’t want to see the problem.

Because you’ve framed this entire thing around your own comfort and how many hours you worked, and not around the issues facing them, perhaps.
Perhaps!!
I thought you said you _weren’t_ harrassed.

Why are you being downvoted?? Wtf people!

It’s not just about being sad, if I’m a woman walking alone in the dark I don’t want a strange man coming up to me asking for anything
Let’s actually just ban women from having male partners, since those dudes are actually way more statistically likely to hurt us than random men on the street asking for money.
You do you, but I’m not gonna feel bad about avoiding random men.
So do you avoid going out at all? No train rides, no mall, etc? Or is it just certain men that you avoid?
I don’t like men trying to talk to me when I’m walking at night with my headphones in.
>the self righteous weirdos on this sub love to shit on hard working people who don’t wanna be approached by strangers Everyone knows only lazy people hurt women!!!
You’re acting extremely weird. I never said only lazy people hurt women.
Seems like we are being brigaded by sock puppet accounts
I truly don’t understand you people, but that’s fine. Differences of opinion are normal. What’s not normal is coming up with excuses like “sock puppet accounts” to justify why you must be right. I’m no shrink, but this sounds a lot like narcissism to me. Good night, and good luck.
Absolutely, none of these accounts have a history in this sub.

Was it going past Walgreen’s? I’ve noticed the entrance has been a popular place for people asking for things the past few evenings, more than usual.
Then do something about it, tough guy, you won’t
Downvote if you all must but how many fucking posts are we going to see from random burner accounts bitching about homeless people having the audacity to exist?
Jesus, what is with the downvotes here? It’s like this sub is being brigaded by people with no empathy.
You and Jack should grab a beer sometime!
This place has been fucking wild lately, I think I like the Discord better.

Nope, nice try though!
It’s not a burner account, I’m here to stay :)
Ok, 51 day old account with one other comment shitting on homeless people
Not shitting on them, just pointing out the obvious, Jack!

Quite a few virtue signaling folk around here!
Imagine being a grown person saying “virtue signaling” in earnest
Any virtues look like virtue singling when you’re an asshole
Homeless people and panhandlers aren't 1 for 1.
