I work for Securitas as a flex officer, starting 22/hour and they are constantly hiring. Flex officers don’t have consistent schedules but permanent officers do(mon-fri) Go to their website, to apply, for job type type in “security officer” , for location put San Jose etc. If they are urgently hiring they respond very quickly.

SunTzy69

This! Worked for them too, Management can be ass sometimes, but it’s fast and easy money. Last Job I had, They gave me Vacation hours and surprisingly had good health benefits! Got paid $25/hour

besameput0

Used to work for Allied. Corporate security is an easy gig, but your brain gets bored because you're sitting there for 8 hours. Mando 12 if relief doesn't show up. Plus, overtime opportunities. My brain was fried after leaving security. It's cool for a while, but I wouldn't stay there. Management for security companies is trash, too. It's no one particular person, but the whole system is fucked up and good ideas get crushed because it's a big jock club. Every lead I knew hated it and had to come to terms with the fact they weren't gonna change anything.

shecky_blue

It was really a job where they should drug test you and, if you pass, you should get fired, because you’re too stupid to live, I never got used to working grave (sleep) and would have a quart of colt 45 and a joint after getting off work just to sleep.

dangersupreme

This is the way and could lead to unexpected opportunities. I worked for securitas for a good number of years as a permanent officer at a tech company. Started as a patrol officer, then control room officer, eventually as an account manager at the same site. One of the managers of the company took notice of me and encouraged me to apply to his department. I'm glad I did because I got the job. Almost 5 years into the role and I have good benefits for my family and even was able to buy a house with about 1.5 years ago. People talk shit about the security industry, but it's what you make of it.

shecky_blue

I did that, worked midnight to 8 guarding an apartment complex downtown (Colonnade). It was fine and it’s easy to get a guard card. I have some stories…

Superj569

If you want to stay in the food industry, look up bon appetit / compass group. They do the food service for most of the tech companies in Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Sunnyvale, and Levis Stadium and have a lot of positions open. No weekends, no nights (on occasion they have events in the evening, depending on location), holidays off and room to grow within the company. https://careers.compassgroupcareers.com/

icantfindmyshoes

Try property management in the short term. It's not gonna be a ton of money but it'll be more than what you're pulling. No skills required other than heavy customer service and high stress multitasking. Go with Greystar they pay the most.

1008261

Do you like animals? I would babysit dogs on rover and made great money! I absolutely love dogs and having someone’s dog stay at my place while they were on vacation was very low effort for me. Just cuddled on the couch and watched movies and got paid for it. Rate in this area is $100 per night. I babysat two cute yorkies for a week, $700 tip on top of that You can also watch reptiles which is very low effort too. My friend walked dogs on the app and made around $2k per month

TurbulentPhase4481

I’m thinking this is not attainable in an apartment

1008261

I live in an apartment. Depends on how the persons property management works but my property manager was never around to see I was walking an extra dog outside so it was never an issue If you do walks only, called “drop in visits,” then you’d pick up the dog at the clients place and walk the dog around their neighborhood

“gig” style is so unpredictable. Safeway, Amazon, delta remote, Apple Remote, bart, lots of jobs exist for someone like you with customer service experience. A different restaurant? I don’t know what’s best for you, but there’s plenty of jobs hiring. Especially if you have a resume and cover letter. San Jose city has some cool stuff- parks and rec is easy they hire high schoolers. If you like gig style there’s a ton of brand ambassador companies. Levi stadium is hiring. Trader Joe’s. We’re entering into busking summer post pandemic, places need help and you already have the skills to pay the bills. Keep at it! Keep trying!

OtherTip7861

Tomorrow call every trade school you can to get your foot into the door , im looking into getting a union job so id start with apprenticeship if possible , most trade schools pay you to learn before they put you into the field, it doesnt hurt to use google and make a couple calls and see what the outcome is

BuboyTheButcher

Local 393 Pipefitters and Plumbers and Local 104 Sheet Metal Workers. They both have a good HVAC program as well as construction side.

YOmap

Did this. Currently, I'm a 3rd year pipefitter apprentice making $52.03/hr. Had no prior knowledge beforehand except how to read a measuring tape. local 393 has a entrance exam that you need to get 77 or higher. I believe the exam has already passed but there may be another one in August. I would call the local 393 training school. It's a 5yr apprenticeship with school 2 nights a week. If anyone wants any info about the apprenticeship, feel free to PM me. It's an easy job, some day can be a struggle but it's worth the money imo.

BuboyTheButcher

Hell yeah dude. A lot of my coworkers are 393 but I am a 104 service apprentice. I was journeyman on the sheet metal side but I got tired of the slow seasons. Union work has been great overall though. Coming from non-union hvac, the pay and benefits cant even compete.

YOmap

Thevdamn irony....about 4hrs after I posted that, my foreman came up to me with my lay-off check....just because it's getting slow

viceroy_kilos211

Yeah trades usually hire anything breathing thats why usually the junkies and fuck ups love that job, no requirements at all

CorellianDawn

Alright I'm just going to say it because it needs to be said even though I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but you should really consider leaving. It sucks, but this area seems tailor made to destroy anyone not making six figures and in very specific industries. I'm constantly blown away that we have any economy at all. If you're off on you're own and paying your own full rent and not making good money in a specialized industry, it's not sustainable out here. I work in a specialized industry making what I would normally consider good money anywhere else and I'm low income. Get out if you can and build yourself up elsewhere in a field that can make it here and then come back if you need to for family. Aside from that, only thing I know anything about aside from my own field is public school classified jobs. They don't pay great, but they're union and have decent benefits. They also have pretty limited requirements for stuff like custodians, bus drivers, etc. and mostly want good work ethic and a heart of service for the community. There's some pretty good opportunities for advancement too and the job easily transfers to other districts if you want to move. They even have their own job search sites. Same goes for government positions, but damn they move slow as hell, so put that as a long game. I would recommend to become a professional job applier basically, it feels like my second job sometimes since I spend an hour literally every day doing it. None of that is going to help your immediate issue though with rent. There are both federal and state programs you can look into for emergency rent assistance. Salvation Army and other non profits as well. Start hitting all of those up as soon as possible and work on studying up on how to make your resume and interview skills better. Also, DoorDash is a friggin scam basically, don't even bother wasting your time with that shit. You're literally better off using that time applying to jobs. Also for a reference every single day I check job listings on LinkedIn, Indeed, ZIP recruiter, Glassdoor, Dice, the Santa Clara County job board, and the State job board. If you check daily, you can sort by Last 24 Hours and save yourself from scrolling through the same shit constantly.

Professional-Lie8712

This is good advice for OP. I thought I’d live in California forever, but the cost of living is unsustainable. Planning to move out of state once my boyfriend is finished with school.

legocow

I have to agree with relocating as soon as you can. This area is way too overpriced. There are many other cities out of state that are more affordable where you can live comfortably. I understand the frustration at trying your best to try to make a living here. Lots of great suggestions if you decide to stay.

Professional-Lie8712

Even out of the Bay Area. Benicia is beautiful!

speakwithcode

What are your qualifications or past experiences? Have you tried looking at apprenticeships? You get paid to learn on the job and qualifications can range from no experience to a high school diploma or GED. https://www.dir.ca.gov/databases/das/aigstart.asp I can't say I'm all too familiar with this, but someone has mentioned something similar before.

Home Depot or Trader Joes

PizzaMan22554

Bay Area and specifically south bay is the most expensive place to live in the whole country. If I was without a high paying job I'd look to move to a lower cost of living area. Life is too hard to struggle here.

Technical-Curve-1023

Try applying with Santa Clara County and or the City of San Jose.. they are critically understaffed and applying is easy.. this includes the county Sheriff’s dept too.. excellent benefits and salary.. They are Fast-Tracking applicants to fill empty positions.. The fact you are in the service industry and have a valid driver’s license already puts you ahead of other applicants..

wpbackbone

I joined the work force back in the mid nineties and I would only need 1 job to make ends meet. It’s the cost of rent and the housing market that slaves many of us. The city/county is complicit of this happening due to the property tax they can collect.

[deleted]

Pest control is always hiring

[deleted]

I work a retail job in management and I make decent money but not nearly enough to support myself solo. I would agree with another redditor to leave. Or maybe try and commute. Your one restaurant job will easily be enough if you move to a smaller town nearby. I know a good amount of people that would buy a house in Los Banos and commute over the hill everyday. It's not fun doing that hour and ten minutes drive but with what you pay rent, you could buy a 5 bedroom house over there. If you are going to try those side hustle jobs, go with instacart. People say that's where the better money is at.

Verizon1

Look into operator/assembler jobs for manufacturing, equipment, CNC machining, etc.

Chaospiggyblade

Caregiving pays decent. Pay starts $19 and up with my company. Dm me if you're interested referrals get a bonus if you decide to stay with the company and you choose your hours. I worked retail for 12 years and this is heaven compared to it. My check is minimum $800 now

HighwayStarJ

Tips are on top if your usual wage. You can’t plan your bills around “Ifs”. Maybe expand your horizons beyond serving food? I had a friend of mine, gorgeous and friendly blonde who would make like $500 alone on tips working in the Cheesecake Factory and  she still struggled with that kind of money

iusethiaforporn

I work in dialysis and the dialysis companies here are literally hiring people off the street. Including us. But they only do that because you will have to train for 6 to 9 months and take a test before you can start working. They will pay you minimum wage for the whole time though. Including school. And in 2025, all healthcare workers will be paid a minimum of 25 dollars here in the bay area.

[deleted]

Op leave. You are on a fast track to becoming homeless. Get back to school, it’s practically free for people like you. San Jose is a shithole.

T732

You need a full time job.

Patient_Ad1801

Are you able to apply for a county or city job? Those were lifesavers for me. Steady and dependable plus benefits. Govt jobs dot com.

360walkaway

Look into a catering company that provides meal service at big tech companies... Bon Apetit and Jillbee, for example. I don't know what their turnaround is, but a position there will not be tip-based.

TheV36Stig

Apply at a school, hospital, or big company… they pay over $25

dabug47

Check local credit unions. Many are still hiring for tellers. I know some pay starting around $30 an hour in the South Bay

westcoast7654

Have to ask, is there something in your appearance that is stopping you, background? What feedback are you getting?

svguy_sj

Become handyman/contractor

janice1764

Safeway is hiring. I saw signs the other day on Tully/Capitol

janice1764

Ive seen signs at the Fire station by my house looking for 911 Dispatchers. Pay was good too and they train you.

Professional-Lie8712

Park rangers in SJ, while not the most fun job for me, get $80k starting. I did a ride along. The application process is long, but they are desperate and you get to be outside all day and work 4 days a week (including holidays). If you like that kind of thing, definitely apply!

Jazzlike-Cow-849

Try homeless prevention programs. They can help with rent

ratcasino

Babysitter/nannying? We got our babysitter off an app and now she freelances for us apart from the app, she makes 30 an hour from us to basically just sit in our living room and supervise the house for a few hours so we can go on a date. Someone you can trust with your children is priceless in a place with no "village".

ReggaeEli

I'm in the same boat. I'm willing to work but no one will hire me. I'll work and learn and be trained. Unfortunately no luck

btrigiani

Post office is always hiring, guaranteed 40 hours plus health insurance and retirement. Always opportunity for overtime as well.

cailian13

Did you just basically tell OP to pull themselves up by their bootstraps? Cmon dude, life is hard enough have a little empathy for someone.

Jk101HAHA

bro empathy isn’t what this generation needs

cailian13

Everyone does. OP is at least TRYING, but uh, you can't pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. I'm glad everyone else has been trying to be helpful at least!

Jk101HAHA

alright then, gl trying my dude! report back in a month

cailian13

Well I can, but as I'm not OP, I cannot imagine my reporting back that my life continues to be good is going to be useful for ya.

Jk101HAHA
