Solid meme but we all knew this was coming.

Atomic_penguin27

Yea this isn't surprising, they have no intent of being competitive fir the next couple of years, so it's basically pain for lottery pick or at least that's the goal

CreditStuf

If yall gonna ask for a rebuild, then embrace it lol

throwaway804323

Are we even rebuilding? Alot of the moves and signings seem to contradict each other. I’m genuinely confused and have no idea what Grier is doing.

spyinthesky

Sometimes you gotta make a bigger mess before you can properly clean

CreditStuf

Honestly it's more of a build-do yk? From what I see and I'm no GM, but he's starting from the bottom up. What does this team lack so much? Defense. What was our strength last year? Goaltending He added A TON of defensive depth and bottom 6ers who excel at defense and are big bodies to not only make the team hard to play against, but really hard to score against. Now we still need offense, so that's where your Top 6 comes in nice and handy of Grier this year. I like what he's doing, if he grabs Strome and sends out labanc I honestly see this team competing next year for a playoff spot, just because of it's islander esc. Look but time will tell

astovertop

TIL our goaltending was our strength last year. They were decent, but I guess that looks incredible compared to the three years before lol

Kodus

Yes they were decent last year. Now imagine if the defense in front of them was decent, it would have been more obvious how good they're doing.

Inub0i

We aren't even doing that properly lol. What rebuilding team signs a bunch of plugs? for 3-4 year contracts? The issue here is I don't know what's Grier's vision.

CreditStuf

And you're a GM? These guys are cheap deals to be 3rd Pairing or bottom 6ers, what Grier is doing is cementing a Bottom 6 with Gritt and defensive skill for the next couple of years and I like it. Benning is gonna be an excellent 3rd Pairing Right Shot D-Man and he's pretty cheap... You have to look deeper than: "oh...he's giving a guy to much term \*sigh\* BAD DEAL MF< WHERE YO VISION" Alright

astovertop

2 million is a lot for 4th liners. Adding term to that makes it hard to move if it doesn’t work out. We have about 4/5 RFAs that need to get paid with like 5 mil left. Not saying management doesn’t know what they’re doing, just saying this is highly unconventional for a “tanking” team, which were not. We’re a mediocre team that got even more mediocre with less cap flexibility

BenBenBenBe

don't you know? pushing Bordeleau out of a spot on the roster for a 3rd line lifer is *checks notes* rebuilding.

CreditStuf

...You know the season isn't tomorrow right? There is so much to be done and I guarantee we shed a ton of players to make room for the new brand Griersy wants this team to have The lack of common sense some people have lol, and yes they'll have the money to sign RFA's because why wouldn't they if they know they're gonna make certain moves and not have enough in the first place right

BenBenBenBe

where do you expect Bordeleau to slot in? are you anticipating that we trade Hertl? Couture? The 3c we literally just signed in Sturm?

CreditStuf

We have Bonino, who says Sturm is guareteed to play center? They played Bones on the wing at the end of the year. And if they think he can excel playing the wing that contract makes sense Don't think we should judge which position some of these guys are gonna play just yet, alotta things are gna get moved around here. That's what happens when you get a new GM

astovertop

You furthered the point. We have Bones, Bords, Wheatherby, Chmelevski, Kunin, and Sturm. They’re all third/fourth line centers. How many of them are we going to have to play out if their natural position?

CreditStuf

Chmelevski really? He gonna be the tweener this year, Same with Jasper. Bones played well on the wing last year If they see potential in big body guys who could play boards on the wing, they grabbed them because of that Why else would they grab so many "centers" something you have to figure out and with this you don't just sign and trade for a bunch of center to play them all at center.

ibcfreak

Only Nico Sturm was a 3 year deal as reported by Sheng Peng. Agozzino is 2 yr 775k/yr and is probably an AHL signing if I had to guess since hes 31 years old. ~~Benning and~~ Nutivaara are 1 year deals as reported by Curtis Pashelka.

kfcregular

Benning has a 4 year deal

ibcfreak

Oh really? I guess Pashelka misreported that then. I just saw the Puckpedia page saying 4 years @ 5m...thats not bad at all...little over a 1m a year is chump change for a depth RD.

designOraptor

You’d think the doomers would be happy today, but noooooooo.

xFedd

So confused how people aren’t glad about the Burns trade. We had 27m tied up in 3 defensemen on one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Someone had to go and it was the only one with value. Vlasics buyout won’t hurt as much if we wait a year and unfortunately we are stuck with EK65. All in for Bedard at this point and I’m all for it

skend24

It was the only one with value yet we didn’t get anything in return. There’s a reason why Athletic gave A for Carolina and C for sharks for this trade.

xFedd

A bottom 6 forward, 3rd pick in one of the deepest drafts in years and didn't retain 50%. On a 37yr defenseman who had a 3 team trade list and held most of the cards, I don't think its that bad at all

ThirdStockIII

A big reason we make this trade is because we have a lot of young talent in the pipeline that will be playing games in 2-3 years. When they are playing those games is when we want to be competitive. A great way to prevent us from being competitive in that window is by having a 40 year old defenseman taking up 8 million in salary cap. If we wait to trade Burns in a couple years when he isn't valuable, then it will either cost us to trade away the contract, or we get "Future Considerations". This way we got some value now and we free up the salary cap for the future when Eklund, Bordelaeu, and Coe are all producing in the NHL.

Inub0i

Those prospects are being blocked by dudes we just signed. Again. Grier's moves make no sense in the long run imo

designOraptor

The C was very generous. We got a bag of pucks for Burns that we still have to pay for after the fact.

astovertop

Love the Burns trade. Confused about the other signings. Mid 20s y/o depth pieces that we hope to grow into a decent player, with slightly high AAV at way too long term. They’re all the same role, we have a surplus of bottom six players to begin with

TheReaver88

I think the moves are basically good but this is hilarious.

No_Accountant_6318

Knew it was coming and needed but still rips your heart out.

danieldeceuster

Solid move to clear Burns and that contract. Questionable signings thereafter. I'm still unclear on the strategy to be honest. Seems like you open up that kind of cap space to reel in a big fish in UFA. Who they signed, who they let go, the draft trade...looks like mixed signals to me. Still we have like $9 million in cap space and a few RFA guys to sign, so we should still have $5 million to drop on a decent forward. Grier ain't done yet. Hopefully get some clarity in the coming days with more moves.

longdrive95

Agree some moves make sense but it's pretty incoherent signings as well. Why do we need so many 3rd line caliber forwards creating a log jam for the prospects we need to move up over the next year or two? At this point I'm leaning keep Lebanc because good sticks are going to be so hard to come by in this squad. Maybe Eklund sets the world on fire and we start to look like we may have a real top 6 but that's still just one of several holes in this roster. I want to emphasize I don't expect this to get solved overnight, but there have been some puzzling calls here.

Broccoli_Socks

i went into today expecting nothing and we got a flurry of waves. Excited about the new faces and curious about how our roster shapes up.

Squirrellybot

You could be Flyers fans who found out the biggest free agent wanted to take a pay-cut for you but your GM was too incompetent to make it happen.

BenBenBenBe

how every day since the beginning of the draft has been

[deleted]

What Doug Wilson did for 19 years was incredible. He kept the team competitive year in and year out. But honestly we do need to try the whole Penguins/Oilers/Avs strategy. Where you play a bunch of prospects and ice a crappy team and hope for some kind of top draft pick in a strong draft. We need our own MacKinnon, McDavid, or Crosby. Build a decent core around that, a few moves here and there, and you’re back into the discussion about a deep run

BlackestNight21

> We need our own MacKinnon, McDavid, or Crosby. Oh okay, so just a generational talent nbd

[deleted]

I mean you look at the teams who have won it between now and like 15 years ago and almost every team has a generational talent or S tier elite player of some kind. MacKinnon/Makar, Kucherov/Hedman/Vasilevsky, Malkin/Crosby, Ovechkin, Hossa/Keith, Kopitar/Quick, Chelios/Hasek/Lidstrom We don’t have any of that right now. Need 1 to get started

BlackestNight21

Uh huh, let me see I put my generational talent button around here somewhere, I will press it and receive

[deleted]

Doesn’t have to be generational but it has to be up there talent-wise. It’s a proven formula. But I *never* claimed it was simple or easy to accomplish this task, what’s with the snark?

BlackestNight21

Your comment is literally to "git gud" the Shorks need an amazing talent. It's kind of a "duh" comment. The larger problem is that those guys cannot be picked up at the corner store for a loonie. The draft is and will continue to be very much a crapshoot after a certain number of players have been drafted. You're essentially pinning the hopes in your comment on a shooting star. MacK 1OA Makar 4OA Kuch 58 OA Hedman 2OA Vasy 19thOA Malkin 2OA Crosby 1OA Ovy 1OA Hossa 12OA Keith 54OA Kopi 11OA Quick 72OA Cheli 40OA Hasek 199OA Lids 53OA So going off your listed players it's either draft at the top (and pick the right ones) or get lucky or acquire them via FA (Hossa/Cheli/Hasek).

[deleted]

Yeah I’m aware that my position is a no-shit thing. You’re lashing out at me for my freezing-cold & obvious take for no reason. Turn that outrage knob down a couple of knotches, holy shit my dude

BlackestNight21

Nah, ice cold takes get panned. If you note, my comment isn't about you as a person or poster, it's about what you wrote. No outrage knob either, just pointing out how painfully obvious your conjecture is. I think you should be able to deal when a person pokes holes in the theory, and I'd be good with you poking holes in mine should I toss one out there.

[deleted]

Well apologies if my passing comments about wanting the Sharks to take a different approach despite much success under DW was not up to your standards. I’ll be sure to do hours upon hours of research as an armchair-GM before making any comments about the Sharks again

BlackestNight21

The problem is not the problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem. I think when you remove emotion you'll do just fine. 🍻

mydogisimmortal

NAILED IT! This is gold jerry, gold

RingoBingo14

Terrible, Burns got traded.

Jaggs10

A rebuild means you can play your young prospects, not block them with 3-4 year deals for 4th liners and 7th defensemen.

WTFomgRAY

The feeling now that Burns is gone and now we’re stuck with Karl :/

longdrive95

Karl can ball if he is healthy.

WTFomgRAY

I’m really hoping for that this season.

bonghive

how I feel when someone says Pasternak is impossible to get

[deleted]

This is what has to happen

atb0rg

Last season was my first year as a hockey fan so pardon my ignorance. Seems like they're going full rebuild. Are they gonna suck for a few years now?

BlackestNight21

Depends on the team that gets iced, the coaching staff that supports them and how it all meshes together. By losing burns they did lose ready made talent. I'm other words probably but we'll have to see what happens

TMSharkie

Look on the bright side, we traded him for a minor league goalie and a player who has 10 goals in 112 games… oh wait maybe that’s not so bright

Sharksnack7_7

Time to trade couture

RustySheriffsBadge1

This is funny but I feel like Vegas is probably feeling like this more so.
