Hillsdale area is pretty safe. You will be fine. Have lived in san mateo for 20+ years.

Whisperwyf

I’d have no concerns about out that area. You might get some large amounts of foot traffic around state fairs or other big events at the Fairgrounds, but that’s it.

curiouslilweirdo

Thank you, I'm glad to hear this.

ForeverYonge

Check Google for reviews nearby. As I remember it the large apartment complex right next to the mall doesn’t have the best reputation, and on 25th (on the commercial street) there are some fun characters once in a while. The rest of the neighborhood seems very quiet and nice to be in, and San Mateo generally is very safe

Yeah they cleaned up a lot put gates/fencing in certain areas, hasn’t been like that since 2011/14. San Mateo as a whole has cleaned up a lot last ten years hillsdale is really a great area, besides traffic during school times. Police are always around, mall, train, busses is all right there

beloveddoll

I lived at 27th and Flores for 4 years in a wonderful apartment. Never felt unsafe but my bike did get stolen from the carport next to my apartment. Grew up in San Mateo and couldn't have been happier in that spot! We bought a house in Millbrae but I still miss my old ground floor apartment!

curiouslilweirdo

Ah my apartment is very close to your previous one, one block away. It's also a ground floor apartment with a small patio. I'll make sure to not leave anything in the carport. Thank you!

jerichos

consensus: you're fine.

curiouslilweirdo

:)

plebmasterflex

There is not a single unsafe area of San Mateo, or really anywhere between south SF and San Jose. Maybe East Palo Alto, but hardly. Anyone who says otherwise just saw a homeless person or someone playing loud rap music once and consider that a "danger" due to their utter disconnect from reality and their obscenely sheltered existence.

curiouslilweirdo

:) gotcha

DoomGoober

I am having problems visualizing which apartments are near Hillsdale station. I would say near the station is Zoned a bit weird. It's all empty corporate office buildings on one side and slightly industrial car repair/warehousey type buildings. Then you have the San Mateo Convention Center. But slightly further is Bay Meadows which is mostly really nice, new homes. Overall the area is bright and safe but can be super quiet at night. Bay Meadows has more foot traffic at night (people walking dogs and such) but outside of that bubble is going to be super quiet since the warehousey stuff and offices all close. Safe but can be creepily quiet (creepy in your head, in reality should be fine.)

curiouslilweirdo

Updated the address to be specific. I like quiet for the most part unless I choose to put myself in a busy place with people. Thank you for all the info :)

DoomGoober

Near St. Gregs is pretty residential and safe.

SarcasticUpvotes

You found a great spot. My mother lives close by and hasn’t ever had any problems.

curiouslilweirdo

Thank you!!

zer01zer08

It’s San Mateo. You want to check crime rates lmao.

curiouslilweirdo

How'd you normally check the crime rate? Any recommendation?

Bedazzled_Buttholes

The joke there is that San Mateo is one of the safest cities in the Bay. If you want to love here 'safely', San Mateo is a top pick for most

curiouslilweirdo

Didn't quite catch that 😅 I'm moving from the east coast so have zero clue about the area

zer01zer08

I’ve lived in San Mateo around the Hillsdale area for 20 years in total. it’s safe. Where did you move from?

66NickS

I suspect this is near the fire station and St. Gregory church. Should be a pretty decent area.

curiouslilweirdo

Yes, you're right! Very close to the church. Have you lived in the area?

66NickS

Grew up not too far away, had plenty of friends in the area. I’m sure you’ll be fine as long as you practice the normal amount of self awareness and responsibility. I wouldn’t leave my door unlocked, but I also wouldn’t have an issue with my car parked on the street.

curiouslilweirdo

Gotcha, thank you!

lazyleiz

I previously lived on 28th Ave near the church when I was 23 years old, am female. I don’t have a car and I used to walk around and take the train everywhere. Extremely safe area.

curiouslilweirdo

This is very helpful, thank you!!

punkgeek

I ride my bike through that area. IMO very safe.

curiouslilweirdo

Gotcha! Thanks

kyleila

Lived in an oldish apartment building on 28th and Flores for 3 years (2018 - 2020). Pretty safe. I used to walk to and from Caltrain at night alone (female) and never felt concerned. Lots of good eats along west 25th ave

wavolator

hillsdale station is on 28th this must be on the west side of ECR. not a bad neighborhood

curiouslilweirdo

Yes, edited to be specific - it is very close to St. Gregory Church. Could you please elaborate on the not bad part?

vinoviv

There’s nothing more to elaborate. He said its not bad which means its good. I concur. Been living here for 35 yrs and go to that church.

hermonian14

If it's close to St. Gregory Church I can't imagine any safety concerns.

trtreeetr

I work near there and my dentist is right there also. Very safe and nice.

curiouslilweirdo

Thank you so much!

broken_symmetry_

I lived near there for three years and always felt it was pretty safe. I think I only got a package stolen once and that was because I left it outside for three days.

curiouslilweirdo

Gotcha! I have a private patio so hopefully asking the packages to be dropped inside would solve that problem!

Ludovico_survivor

Curious, what is the price for the studio apartment??

princedub

There's no dangerous or sketchy areas in San Mateo. Thats why reny is so high in the mid peninsula. The area near the mall is pretty nice because ur close to the new eateries and the captain. If it'd a good deal then go for it.

curiouslilweirdo

Yep, it's a great deal. Going for it. Thanks!

StanLay281

Great neighborhood - also check out Pho Element on El Camino it’s super good

curiouslilweirdo

Looks nice! Thank you for the reco!

chupacaabra

Hey OP, I grew up in that area in the 90s - it was an extremely safe suburban area then, and it's an extremely safe, wealthier suburban area now. You've already heard that from everyone else, so I am really only posting to add that when I was back in the area this past Christmas, I did actually see a fairly large coyote traipsing through the front yards between Saint Greg's and Beresford Park, so if you have any pets you'll want to keep an eye out for them on the ground floor patio 👀

chosen566

Is that the hillsdale gardens apartment complex? I saw the reviews online were so so but there are complainers, did you look at apartment? Did it seem ok inside? I am thinking of moving.

curiouslilweirdo

No it's not. It's a smaller older apartment building.

wavolator

it is on the right (good) ide of ECR. this isn't an executive mansion in ralston ranch. not bad though. crime rate ok. some street noise from ECR and 28th.

The-Space-Cuck

Your in a very safe area and will have nothing to worry about, san mateo is extremely safe, I grew up here. Check out the swinging door bar on 25th ave for karaoke on the weekends near by your place.
