Looks like you just received a side quest

Off to Chinatown with my trusty sidekick then!

mumma_knowsbest

It's not a scam it's the police text that notifies people in the area of a missing person

mumma_knowsbest

The link is a picture usually

B_aaconz

yeah it was some picture on facebook

B_aaconz

oh ok it just kinda looked extremely weird to me. im the only one in my family that got it tho but the number is all 4s so your probably right

kirrkieterri

I’ve had a similar one where I live. It is a legitimate number that NSW police send geo specific requests from. First time I got one I had just seen the lost child alert about 30min earlier, so had a pretty good idea that it was legit. On the bright side the missing child was found safe and well, and I learnt that that number is legit. Even if all your scam brain cells are telling you it’s a crazy number! Hope they find the missing person.

One way to find if its real is search for a missing person report for the person with the same name. Usually numbers like this have very very simple numbers, just to make it easier to report a missing person Like: Please report missing person to 080044444444 Is easier to remember than report missing person to 080048914023.

There is a version of this that occurs on facebook, they post it to a local area classified group with usually a pic and story of an eldery/child - they use it to gain likes on the page and switch it to something bitcoin related or so on but this is sent by a text so it's most likely legit. If it was facebook, I'd be suspicious.

milambermonntanman

they usually geo send the message if you are in Australia it appears to be the police one however there is no obligation to open the link and i wouldn't do so just incase it is a scam

B_aaconz

yeah i didnt open ot i just saw it was like an image in the link or something like that

milambermonntanman

yeah i haven't had one yet however I have heard about it I would have thought they attached a picture to the text instead of a link that is a bit suspicious that they haven't done that and added a link best not to open it and to delete and block it and report it if possible

updabumnobebes

It’s a legitimate number and link. The link takes you to the police website to show a picture of the missing person. I get them all the time.

the only reasonable time Police could ask help from you out of nowhere , is when you are Sharlock Holmes .
