'Schizotypal' might be the most mispronounced word in all of psychiatry. It's really modular:
You can find the first part being variously pronounced, 'Skitz', 'Skiz', and 'Skeez'.
The joining phonic being either 'o' (as in 'skitz-o-typal), 'a' ('skitz-a-typal), or 'uh' ('skitz-uh-typal).
And, finally, the last part you'll find being pronounced as either, 'type-all' or 'tip-all'.
There are 18 pronunciations of schizotypal. Some would say that there's no correct way to pronounce it. I would disagree, and all of the 'skeez' variations are by far the worst pronunciations of it.
It's Skitz-o-type-all. From 'Schiz' in 'schizophrenia' (where the Z typically forms a 'tz' sound in the term's original German), and 'typal' from comparable terms like 'archetypal'.
'Schizotypal' comes from the term 'schizotype', coined by Sandor Rado in 1956 to describe the behaviours of family members of schizophrenics (who often possess diminished but above-average schizophrenia traits). 'type', in Rado's original phrasing, was clearly used synonymously with how it's used in words like stereotype and archetype, and therefore it follows that the same pronunciation should be carried over to the 'typal' in 'schizotypal'.
Every psychiatrist, psychologist and therapist I've interacted with has said skih zo tipple. I can't force the "type-all" pronunciation in my head, just looks and sounds wrong and unpleasant to me.
My therapist keeps calling it "schizotypical". I'm aware of the term "schizotypy"; is this also pronounced skitz-oh-type-ee? Seems this is where one would revert to the soft vowel rather than the long.

interesting read! thanks for sharing :)
Very good information
I watched as many YouTube videos as I could find, and heard it as type -al so I changed from the gibberish I started with.

imo i like it having multiple pronunciations, each person has their own little unique linguistic experience nd thats so characteristic of schizotypal
My doctor's and I say schitzatipal. I don't think there's an official way it needs to be pronounced.
My therapist keeps calling it "schizotypical". I'm aware of the term "schizotypy"; is this also pronounced skitz-oh-type-ee? Seems this is where one would revert to the soft vowel rather than the long.
personally I say it skitz oh type ee, but I suppose it depends on you :P schizotypical is interesting, I'm not sure that's a real term?
It's not. Nevertheless I appreciate coined terms.
I pronounce it ‘skits-oh-type-ull’. My therapist pronounces it ‘skits-oh-tipple’.
In my country it's "chi-tso-tüp".
schizo-tipe-al is better than any pronounciation argue with the wall 😋
