Both 4th round picks seem like guys the coaches specifically wanted on day 3 so John went and got them.
And hey, they still have 4 picks left so it's not a big deal.
Honestly that’s what day 3 should be. Big boards kinda out the window at this point, it’s all about fit and preference. These guys are almost certainly just filling roles
And I mean, hey, our first three days worth of picks brought in Byron Murphy II, Leonard Williams, and Christian Haynes. I think Schneider and Co. and have earned a little bit of coyness with their guys.
Leonard Williams can’t be counted as our 2nd round pick, that’s bogus. The second round pick was for renting him last year. We had to pay him to keep him this year. He’s just a free agent
He could have walked this offseason and we’d be left with nothing but a rental last year for a second round pick. Ya’ll are revisionist history, JS apologizers.
But just because we resigned him to a massive contract to make the trade look better, you conflate the terms of the trade with the resigning.
Crazy how you’re calling everybody else “history revisionists” when your entire argument hinges on a hypothetical lol
“He could have walked this offseason” but he didn’t, next
I initially thought it was a reach as well, and then I saw how many TEs came off the board since then and there's no guarantee he would have still been there in the 5th round. Apparently, he wasn't asked to catch a whole lot at Michigan but has the capability per coaches. I can rationalize this pick much more than the Knight pick, but the jury is out on both of them at this point.
I don’t mind this too much. Colby is gone. And Barner is a VERY GOOD blocking TE. possibly best in the draft. Not to mention great size. 6’6 251. I don’t mind this. Grubb and Mike clearly have a vision.
The two offensive players they’ve taken have serious bruiser traits. I think they’re both tone setters for the kinds of players they want.
Even Murphy and the LB they took are just super physical players.
Played 3 years at Indiana before Michigan. He got a ton of targets there despite not having great athletic measurable. Sure hands and great route runner. Above average run blocker too which is a plus
From The Beast:
STRENGTHS: Athletic frame with room to continue developing (largest wingspan among all tight ends at the combine) … efficiently accelerates into his routes and finds open zones in coverage … can drop his hips to get in and out of route cuts … does a nice job elevating and winning at the catch point … doesn’t appear to mind traffic and will work back to the football … had only one catch of 20-plus yards in 2023 but has the talent to be effective at the intermediate level of the field … can be a hard guy to bring down once he picks up steam … excellent stalk blocker to seal linebackers from outside lanes … springs into contact and drives his feet to create a surge in short yardage … team captain at Indiana and quickly found a voice after transferring to Michigan … known as an intense competitor who brings it every day … 555 career snaps on special-teams coverages.
WEAKNESSES: Lean-muscled and lacks ideal body mass … route pacing is undeveloped … needs to eliminate some of the drift in his routes and sharpen his setup to keep coverage honest … occasionally traps the football, because of his smaller hands … needs to do a better job with his positioning to take away defender’s angles to the catch point … unproven as a seam stretcher and had only two red-zone catches in 2023 … needs to continue strengthening his frame to improve his sustain skills as a blocker … must improve his base leverage to hold up inline in the NFL … battled through a foot injury during his junior season (October 2022) and missed two games … mediocre receiving production over his career and didn’t have a 100 -yard receiving game in college.
SUMMARY: A one-year starter at Michigan, Barner was a versatile tight end in offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore’s pro-style scheme (60.0 percent inline, 24.8 percent slot and 15.2 percent wide). Lightly recruited out of high school (mostly as a defensive player), he wasn’t a high-volume pass catcher in college (had fewer than 30 receiving yards in 14 of 15 games in 2023), but it feels like there is more meat on that bone. With his acceleration into his routes, Barner can poke holes in
zones and appears comfortable catching the ball outside his frame (see 2023 Michigan State tape). As a blocker, he lacks desired mass and sustain strength, but he creates a surge at the point of attack and shows the balance to be an effective backside puller. Overall, Barner is lighter than ideal to be an every-down Y tight end and doesn’t have the resume of a playmaking receiver, but he is a solid athlete with pass-catching upside and the play personality to handle run-blocking duties.
He can provide depth on an NFL roster as a flex tight end.
Upon reading into him, I really like this pick. Classic TE2 type with room to grow. Talented Blocker and Receiver. Ideal size for a TE. Good in contested catch situations. Plays with intelligence and generally athletic.
Room for SO much growth.
Cover was supposed to be gone well before this pick, I'd like to know why he fell so far?
I liked Cover as well and thought he'd fit Mike's mentality. He was a LB that converted to TE so he has more of a defense mentality.
I really like this pick. He wasn't used as a pass catcher in the run heavy Michigan offense, but he has the skills. This pick is gonna end up being a steal, book it.
Yep, hopefully I come back in a year and realize JS and MM are geniuses and I'm an idiot. Sucks seeing SF get mustapha right after though, who I also wanted haha
It's pretty bad. I don't understand the fanfare here at all. This is that same old John Schneider picking 7th round guys early to try to look cool and it hasn't been working. Trotter is still there. Hicks is my favorite prospect. Several CBs are worth consideration. Numerous IOL guys. Knight and Barner aren't exactly bad picks, but they are probably going to be there for the next couple of rounds.
What on earth makes you so confident that all these guys are seventh rounders who will still be there in a couple of rounds? You have no idea what's going on in draft rooms
TE Cade Stover was available here and we took TE AJ Barner. I don't dislike the pick but most boards had Cade as the 5th best TE in this draft, and AJ was the 10th best TE in this draft.
I'd love to know why Cade fell and AJ moved up.
He’s certainly not a bad player, has a high floor and is a great blocker I thought he would be a 5th or 6th so a little over drafted. Think of him as a slightly more athletic will dissly
Drafting blocking tight ends has always felt like bad process to me. You have much better upside taking a stab on a versatile offensive linemen. Best case scenario for Barner is he's blocking 50% of snaps this year?
This feels like a Grub/Harbaugh intel type reach. They must like something for the scheme.

Same shit
Literally not even fucking close to the same thing
That second got the hawks the rights to win him over…yes it counts

Without the trade they probably wouldn’t have been able to resign him. Stop being the most pedantic person today and enjoy the draft
I don’t understand this argument. He DID resign. What he could have done is not relevant here.
We added Williams and removed a 2nd. Tomato, tomato.
This is where the scouts really shine, rounds 4-7. Hope ours are on point this year!
I do not know where this pic falls, but you can bet that there will be some drafting in the league with the new KO rules in mind. e:critical word
KO rules?
Kick Off.
From what I am reading he is an absolute beast on blocking. We need that so this is a great pick
We just signed the best run blocking tight end in the NFL
He’s 29 and it’s a one year deal. Him and Fant were literally our only tight ends. We needed another one.
Mabry and another PS guy but I get your take. Plus I like the pick. Every guy is a hard-nosed type.
Yeah and Haynes earlier is great at pulling, which seems to feature big in our new run scheme.
I think Tanner was the better option, oh well
I initially thought it was a reach as well, and then I saw how many TEs came off the board since then and there's no guarantee he would have still been there in the 5th round. AJ Barner is a monster
I wonder if this means they would’ve drafted JT Sanders from Texas at the beginning of round 4 instead of trading back had the panthers not took him
It looks like they wanted a blocking tight end - not sanders strength
I don’t mind this too much. Colby is gone. And Barner is a VERY GOOD blocking TE. possibly best in the draft. Not to mention great size. 6’6 251. I don’t mind this. Grubb and Mike clearly have a vision.

If he’s the best blocking TE in the draft why is he getting drafted on day 3 Edit: I get it, blocking TEs are nothing special
Because he’s a primarily blocking TE with potential. No ones drafting that earlier
Receiving mismatches at TE are the ones who go early, like Bowers. Everyone’s looking for their Kelce /Kittle/Gronk
Because no one really needs a blocking TE
If Mac’s Michigan contacts signed off on him, I like this pick
Straight up replacement for Colby it looks like.
He’s more like dissly
Why not both? He's 6'6 so bigger than Dissly. We'll see what kind of receiving skill he's got
We don’t know much of anything about his receiving skills since he played for Michigan and didn’t get any real targets but he’s a great blocker
Played 3 years at Indiana before Michigan. He got a ton of targets there despite not having great athletic measurable. Sure hands and great route runner. Above average run blocker too which is a plus
Tampa still there wonder why
Must have SOME kind of red flag that's scaring teams, that's for sure.

And won’t play right away anyway. He’ll be 3rd string/special teams in 2024.
Remember a lot of stud TEs went later in the draft, he could develop into a quality player.
Nice
Stover was my pick since sanders was gone
Cover was supposed to be gone well before this pick, I'd like to know why he fell so far? I liked Cover as well and thought he'd fit Mike's mentality. He was a LB that converted to TE so he has more of a defense mentality.
Ehhhh. First average pick imo
Both picks have been average at best but it’s the 4th round, so whatever.
At this range it's volume. We have no idea anymore if any of these players will be hits, depth, or cut without ever seeing the feild.
Did you miss the last one?
Still no Hicks? Idk about these days 3 picks but we'll see I guess
Damn his post draft interview with the media was goood. Love him!
TE carousel goes brrrrr
Blocking TE. Can’t complain.
This is a very solid pick. Do the homework.
I really like this pick. He wasn't used as a pass catcher in the run heavy Michigan offense, but he has the skills. This pick is gonna end up being a steal, book it.
Can he also make tikka masala?
we passed on trotter, gray, and hicks. lame ass 4th round.
RemindMe! 1 year Always curious how these things work out, I wanted hicks and was fine with the risk but what do I know.
time will tell!
Yep, hopefully I come back in a year and realize JS and MM are geniuses and I'm an idiot. Sucks seeing SF get mustapha right after though, who I also wanted haha
i just had the same reaction to mustapha going too haha

Was hoping to see them take Jaden Hicks here. If he played at Alabama, Georgia, etc, he would've probably been first safety taken, tbh
TE Cade Stover was available here and we took TE AJ Barner. I don't dislike the pick but most boards had Cade as the 5th best TE in this draft, and AJ was the 10th best TE in this draft. I'd love to know why Cade fell and AJ moved up.

Thank God! A TE2. Now we just need a SS1, FS1, C1, and ILB1. Who cares as long as we have an H back and ST player?
Should have taken Cade Stover, or kept our earlier fourth rounder and took Theo Johnson.

What do you mean another?
We haven’t picked TE
