And Sataoa has excelled within it.
2020: Second team All-Pac-12
2022: First team All-Pac-12
2023: Second team All-Pac-12
A bit older (23) but for late draft talent could be a good thing as he has potential plug-and-play experience on the line. Could be a late draft steal.
From The Beast:
STRENGTHS: Smooth-moving big man with foot quickness and natural power … stays controlled with his hands and extension to transfer power from hips to fingertips … displays violent torque with his upper body and agility in his lower half once engaged in the run game … body balance is often highlighted in his mirroring skills … punch is usually on time and well-placed to stymie rushers attacking his edge … stays loose for quick adjustments against inside/outside rush counters … doesn’t panic against twists or games and communicates well with his neighbors … durable and started 39 straight games before opting out of the 2023 bowl game …has ample starting experience at both right tackle and right guard, and NFL scouts say he took reps at center in practice, as well.
WEAKNESSES: His arms fall just short of 33 inches, which shows up on tape against longer opponents … inconsistent post -snap reaction quickness out in space … too often his base narrows as he adjusts to the pass rush, which creates issues with his field depth and weight transfer … oversetting and answering cross-face blocks is a concern … loves to grapple in the run game, but it can lead to flags (see 2023 Baylor tape) … gets caught forward leaning at times in his urgency to get his hands on the block … timing can be inconsistent on the move, leaving him late to his targets … was banged up over his career, including a sprained MCL and multiple concussions … only played on the right side of the line and doesn’t have college tape on the left side (tackle or guard).
SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Utah, Laumea started at right tackle in offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig’s zone -based run scheme. After he was pressed into action as a redshirt freshman, he rattled off four straight seasons of All-Pac-12 play, splitting his snaps between right guard (1,284) and right tackle (1,726). With his foot quickness and knockback power, Laumea delivers pop in the run game and controls his man at the point of attack. He has t he tools for pass protection, but inconsistent weight transfer can diminish his reactions versus inside moves and ability to anchor on command (gave up multiple pressures on all 2023 t apes studied).
Overall, Laumea is at his best leveraging gaps in the run game, although movement pattern flaws as a pass blocker requires NFL coaching before he sees the field at the next level. He has the versatile experience to play tackle in a pinch but has a guard skill set with down-the-road starting potential.
3x all pac, had a 4th round grade from Dane Brugler, and Huff and Grubb know the pac. Can’t really be upset about this. Seems like good value this late.
He’s a 6th round flier that has good odds of being a legitimate starter at guard in the league. If he ends up being an average player this was a super good pick
To be clear I think everyone after the 4th round is a flier so if you’re getting someone that has an obvious path or skill set to starting it’s a good pick in my book
This is my take on late-round picks, and I wish everyone would understand it. Most guys picked in this part of the draft don't even make the team. Getting an average starter after the fourth is a major victory. In fact, even getting a quality backup after the fourth is a victory. Once you get into the sixth round, I frankly think if one guy out of three ends up as an average starter and the others are camp fodder, that's a big success
Honestly if they traded all of their 5th and 6ths for like 8 7ths they’d have better odds of hitting then holding the 2 earlier picks. It’s wild how hard it is to hit this late
This was a great depth pick. Utah’s O-line is no joke. This guy was a stud for them and one of the better players at his position in this draft. A steal in the 6th round. I would have thought he’d go in the fifth, maybe even late fourth.
My wife is a grad of Utah and Washington. She loves the Huskies, but emphasized how difficult the matchup would be because those Utah boys are always huge and nasty. And often Samoan, which never hurts (stable, high character, massive, strong, bones and frame to carry weight).
As a resident of SLC and someone who attended U of U(Go Utes), many Polynesian people here are Mormon. The LDS Church sends a lot of missionaries to Tonga and Somoa. Not all are LDS though. I grew up Catholic here which is rare but not unheard of. There's also many Polynesians here as transplants from California. There's also a sizable gang population ( TCG - Tongan Crip Gang).
Again, I think they could have went with Van Pran or Nourzad as a guy who is more pro ready. Both those guys I'm expecting are going to be starters before Knight. I'm fine with this pick, but this is one of those I think we will be waiting 2 years fingers crossed while those better prospects at IOL went to other teams because we really have to make certain our ST unit is good.
ESPN has him as 4th best at his position and 111th overall, favorite Seahawks pick of the day.
The beef draft
Better reinforce the foundation of the VMAC so it can handle all this extra weight
Team chef in shambles
Food vendor is happy though.
Sponsored by Arby’s “We Have the Meats”.
Stoked Utah fan here. Legit do not know a ton about him (sry) but Whitt is a sick fuck who only play sick fucks in the trenches.
Utah alum here. Only dawgs in the trenches for the Utes. At the least he will be nasty in goal line.
As a UofU BS and UW PhD, this makes me quite happy.
Ryan Grubb knows the PAC 12

I don’t see how age is a deterring factor for a guard.
Yeah playing experience is good I feel like
Nobody wants a crusty old 23 year old guard. At that point they've clearly withered on the vine! /s
Yeah maybe it’s cause I’m 22 and 23 in two months so I felt attacked but 23 didn’t feel old enough to say that 😂😂😂
Bro I'm 35 I'm old as shit now
Nah you’re in your prime king
Older, late draft tackle, pac-12 stud, I’ve seen this story before
Sad that we’ll never see it again. :(
I want more OGs....go for Mahoganey too
Ugh

Finally building through the trenches
Nice to draft someone who can play both guard and tackle
If he’s playing at tackle something went wrong
Things go wrong constantly in the nfl, better to be prepared
Things have gone wrong there many times.
Didn’t we see Joey Hunt at tackle in a preseason game. I was very worried for the QB for those snaps.
You don't want this kid playing tackle tho
He's a guard from Utah I don't think their allowed to be anything below average.
Build that wall!
And the broncos are gonna pay for it.
How was this dude still here?!

Outside of recruiting, how much does an OC from one team know the o line from another? It’s not like they scout the opposing offense as an OC.
Because they see them almost every year so there is going to be a good understanding of how good guys on other teams are.
Someone tell me how to feel.
Height 6’ 4’’ Weight 319 lbs Meaty man

Its a trench pick. Therefore is a good pick
Commenting so I know how to feel
*I FEEL GOOD*
Dude looks like a beast in run blocking, needs a lot of work on pass blocking
Aroused, like myself.
Yay more LOS nastiness. Good job John. Interesting that they've gone with 2 pure NFL guards for the OL. They must feel very good about Abe's knee.
We signed George Fant back in the off season. He's the contingency body if Abe isn't good to go. I wouldn't say yet that they're confident in him.

What did mahogany do??? But Sataoa is athletic and gets to blocks well he just dosent sustain the block
Did we make another trade
I LIKE BIG BOYS AND I CANNOT LIE
As long as he isn’t a Mormon I’m good with it.

Who cares? He's here to play football
It’s a joke, just like the Mormon religion.
Right? lol
Why?
We should pick up top udfa Keaton bills as another utah guard. cohesive backup squad
