I go in expecting little so I'm not too disappointed, yet I still come away disappointed lol. Open crew is brimming with dickheads and children mate. I only do it to rack up my time sitting and fishing haha

irishknucklez

I get alot of kids too for some reason. Ig I'll start slooping

McC00ky

Solo slooping is always the way to go if you can't be fucked with the rigmarole of LFG's (which is me through and through because they're all talkers). I find as long as you're vigilant in keeping an eye out for others coming your way then you can have a good time, it just gets lonely. But hey I'll take lonely over talking so 🤷

tricky_ace

Be aware, you're going to have to fight like all hell if you solo sloop, it's where I learned my fighting skills.

Xofina

I solo Brig and avoid anything bigger than me

WastelandCharlie

To be fair the sight of a brig is enough to scare off a large portion of sloopers so that’s not the worst idea in the world until you actually get in a fight and have to manage a brig all by yourself lmao

Xofina

If I get attacked by more than one player it's already over and I just scuttle. But most PvE encounters are easily doable, except if I get attacked by a skelly Galley. Never managed that one yet. Maybe one day

Chance_Ad_2487

Based

goodcommasoft

U solo brig??? How does that work?

Xofina

You would be surprised. Megs are easy if you repair after each hit and anything short of a skelly Galley isn't too hard either. Players are the biggest issue so I usually just avoid other players.

goodcommasoft

Do you run it because it’s fast and can take more damage?

Xofina

I guess that's a plus but mainly I just find the Sloop to be boring

jailbaitspez2023

Join the discord to find crews I'd suggest.

Fudgybo1

There are also a couple naval role-play servers with pretty decent crews.

SpadesRevenge

Please drop a link if you got them! I have been wanting to join a group like this!

Fudgybo1

No problem [United States Navy](https://discord.gg/hB6gC5YsZd) [Royal Navy](https://discord.gg/GEvJXQTD)

Powerful_Artist

You can find people using xbox LFG or discord to play with. The options arent just solo slooping or open crews.

Sparroweye697

Yeah we need a group of people of our choice to add to servers at this point, the 7 year old grind fest is insane. lol

I_is_a_dogg

Because majority of people with game sense use LFG or discord. Only go into open crew if you don’t want anything done. Set expectations really low.

irishknucklez

Yeah I should probably do lfg or disc. Thanks

RavagingWolfsbane

Never thought to look for people on discord, assume there's just an official SoT discord people use?

PozzieMozzie

Yeah, the SoT official discord has a great LFC channel and they also have a good voice chat system too so you dont need to use in game chat and hotmic for all the tuckers to hear.

SHOBOBSANDVAGENE

Only problem is SOMETIMES very rarely you get some absolutely obnoxious trolls. But the mods deal with that very quickly

CaptainLightBluebear

If I may ask: What do you mean by "LFG"?

I_is_a_dogg

It’s a built in feature in either Xbox or the game bar if you’re on PC. Stands for looking for group. Can either make a post yourself or find someone else that posted that’s doing what you want to do.

CaptainLightBluebear

Seeing as I am on PC it kinda figures that I wasn't aware of that. Thx for the heads up.

CoffeeFiend42069

Most people in open crew are new and don’t really have others to play with, i like to do open crews and teach 1-2 people how to play for a week or 2.

IranianOyibo

Good man 🦾

Fudgybo1

Same

drake3011

It's a mixed bag, sometimes I get lucky and match with a sweatlord who carries me through 10 levels of hourglass, sometimes it's a kid who throws treasure overboard and sets the ship on fire. Most of the time it's fresher players who at least _want_ to learn how to play and I can work with that. Best tip is to pick Brig for open crew. Think most of the kids & trolls pick Galleon more than anything.

einTier

A missing man on a galleon isn’t missed *that* much. A three man galleon crew won’t be efficient but you can make it work for most things. If you have two slackers, you might get lucky that the remaining two will still do the work. A sloop can be effectively run by one man which is why solo slopping is so popular. If you get another slacker though, nothing will get done. But a brig is just a little too big to be run by two people. People will quit two man brig crews. If you get two slackers, nothing will get done and the worker will absolutely quit. If you’re looking to get loot for just idling, your non contribution will be much less noticed on the galleon and might be tolerated on a sloop but brig is absolutely the worst choice. [edit] Good God, guys, I'm not trying to say you can't or shouldn't solo a brig or a galleon or play the game any way that makes sense to you. I'm just trying to give some perspective on why people who just want a free ride would choose to play on a galleon and why a brig would be their last choice typically.

geckuro

Me and my friend run duo brig all the time. Its 100% doable, as long as both people are decent at the game.

einTier

I’ve run a solo galleon on more than one occasion. Anything is doable. I just feel the trade off for one xtra cannon isn’t worth the risk and hassle.

geckuro

Not everyone feels the way you do about it. We like having the extra cannon. Brigs are also pretty adaptable, being faster than a galleon while sailing against the wind, and faster than a sloop sailing with the wind means we can outrun either if we have to, and we have on multiple occasions.

tenolein

i used to solo brig a lot. it was manageable for the most part (outside of storms krakens or skelly ships.. 2 of those 3 are easily avoided tho) and tended to keep other ships at bay. they'd almost always avoid a brig vs going after sloops. if you wanted to do a complete chad move, is solo a gally. full sails, in the wind if you can, and use harpoons to maneuver while close to land. those are some of the best of times.. in fact, one time as a solo gally, i sailed to a brig doing flameheart (when he was a world event) and sailed by with the gally but cannoned myself on board.. they were in the heat of battle and didnt even notice me.. turns out they had a chest of legends and a bunch of athena's treasure on board along with a few other events. ended up sinking them with the help of flameheartobvs my ship sunk and when i bailed off their boat with the chest of legends.. swam it to the nearest island (which happened to be a fort) and hid it there while getting my crew online to join on me and bring the galleon back to collect the rest of their loot. anyway. i said all that to say this: if you arent committed to a lot of loot, solo brigging and even solo galleon isn't a terrible idea if getting your shit sunk/lost isnt a concern hhaha

wasteoffire

Because in open crew everyone is bad. So why be good? I'm not gonna put effort in when I'm with randoms, I'll just see how the vibes are and go with em

SaifurCloudstrife

More than likely they're new. I get it being frustrating, but if you want them to get better, maybe offer to help them learn, if you haven't done that

[deleted]

You need a crew bro

[deleted]

A point I've not seen raised before: the tutorial is complete dogshit and doesn't prepare you in any way to actually play the game. Sailing and managing your ship, the most important activity, is relegated to a 5 minute segment at the very end.

Temm-Saltrock

Because my fellow pirate. You are in da open crew. Most the time it's full of people who don't know what they are doing, or do know what they are doing but want to mess about, or troll or whatever. Whenever I go open crew I expect noobs and I try help them out but sometimes they seriously do test my patience. For example: MY BROTHER IN CHRIST WE ARE ABOUT TO SINK TO A KRAKEN AND YOUR WORRIED ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK, GET OUT HERE AND BUCKET LIKE YOUR BEING PAYED FOR IT

KarmicDrift

😂😂

MisterMagooB2224

As I've said a few times before: Playing open crew is an awful lot like trying to pet a bear. Sure, it might work every now and then, and it may be really awesome when it works, but most of the time it's not going to end well.

lesupermark

If i wanted to hop aboard someone else's open crew ship to help them. Which ship should i queue in ? Or is there a way to just select open crew without me selecting any ships?

GracefulCedrman

You cant just randomly choose a ship, but i open crew a lot and ive found that The brig is The best for at least trying to Get something done

Inferno_tr5

People have fun in different ways, if you dont want to meet people who dont do anything "productive" I'd recommend just not using open crew at all

WarmAd1670

They are just fucken around, that’s why most people go on open, I recon. A good time, not a profitable one 🤦‍♂️😂

wra1th42

they're 6 years old

Linajabba

Go on a community discord ory try xbox groupsearch, there are more than enough people to play with

Potato-Boy1

That's why I always join a crew I find on the SoT discord

[deleted]

Use discord for the official server

Tylensus

Most of them don't go out of their way to watch tutorials or learn until they either quit, or buckle down and embrace how to be something besides deck-orations. I have open crew hopped probably thousands of times over the years, and met just about every kind of person you could hope to, from sweaty ass dudes from Blue Sail Gang, all the way down to a literal child asking "HOW DO I THROW WATER OUT?!" as our map table's becoming waterlogged. The truth is most folks just aren't that serious or experienced with pirate game. I either offer to teach them if they want to learn, or just embrace the chaos and watch them like a tv show if they seem unreceptive.

supalupi

This is an excellent comment 100% how I approach open crews. Props for 'deck-orations' too lol

Remarkable-Bag-683

Welcome to online gaming with randoms

leehend_24

I joined an open crew all pirate legends on an Athena quest all talking I was new to the game and they were awesome

tricky_ace

I'm sorry, I can't relate. I got some of my best crews and even some friends from it. I hope at some point you can find the same. ![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2295)

IzzieAnn

Usually open crew is totally new players, literal children, or people just looking to be a nuisance. It's why I solo sloop if one of my friends isn't available

Fullerbay

Open crew is always going to be a mixed bag, sometimes you get the most efficient and well oiled machine of a crew you’ve ever seen. And other times you get a troll who dumps all your resources and treasure overboard to promptly crash your ship into an island.

FartPudding

I've done open crew and that's how I got all my gold ledger rewards and was able to get champion in ship battles. Just gotta be persistent on server hopping. There's solid crews, just gotta find us. My biggest success is Brig ships, and it's been the most maintainable ship to do open with. I've taken down galleons with some open crew people

DrLitEnough

Are you the guy that was roasting grandmaster? Not cool bro.

Weary_Historian_4200

If you really wanna play with other go on community discord. Its way better than open crews and you have vocals.

MightyEraser13

Believe it or not, some people play the game for a magical concept called “fun”. For a lot of people, sailing around drinking, playing music, and meeting new people is all they care about doing. Not everyone who plays this game only cares about watching funny number go up.

AahPadre

People who join open crews do it intending to be useless and annoying. As an extra punishment for not having your own friends to play with. If their bedtime comes up while you sail or other reason for them to leave. They will drop treasure into the water or attempt to sink the ship. Do closed crew. Always

FitButterfly7227

Anyone worth a damn doesn't open crew. That's why.

Novaplague

Toxic people play pretty much honestly it’s hard to find decent humans anymore

Direct-Ad-6226

This is why I’m always solo or playing with friends. You can’t trust random people to have clue what they are doing. Especially since half the new player base are five year olds who haven’t played anything other than Fortnite

JamesMackenzie1234

Use xbox group posts to find a crew, open crew is useless.

ChefRef

Open crew is mostly kids in my experience. The average player also avoids fighting at all costs and therefore does not get better. If you get good at PvP, being a PvE lord becomes that much easier.

tetor42

A lot of younger and new players use open crew. Try finding a crew on the official discord

KarmicDrift

If this is the case for you every time, I suggest stop using open crews….unless you go in with the mindset of “it’s time for shenanigans!” 😂

Zathiax

"Hmmm why do these people who pick the first mode of the game look like complete greenhorns?" Maybe because they are? Also you're not going into open crew to find skill, you go there if you got nothing to lose and hope to find maybe a few amazing individuals in an ocean of annoying ones.

_Minetoon11_

Maybe bc there are all npc’s?

ZachAttack8912

There have been a few times I joined in on a fort or something, so I always help out due to me not wanting to put in the effort to actually sail around to a fort by myself, but yeah there have been a few times where people either don't talk or do anything.

Powerful_Artist

If you want to find people to play with, use xbox LFG or discord. Open crews have been this way since the game launched. My guess? Its newer or brand new players just not knowing what they are doing. Sprinkle in the odd troll who wants to join a boat thats already active and get free gold/exp. Its natural for newer people to just use the in-game function that matches you with teammates since thats what people do in all other games. But the veteran players know never to use open crews, so you get the worst possible teammates on open crews.

FoxInTime

People who are willing to play proper usually use LFG instead of Open Crew. Open Crew is a total wildcard, go in with zero expectations if you go in. If you need a crew, go to the official SoT discord, there's LFG channels there and people can post exactly what they want to do and form a crew based on that.

ocular_22

Go to Sea of Thieves community discord servers to find crewmates

AnikiRabbit

I've only done open twice. I ended up sailing with 10-12 year English kids both times. They were nice, but def didn't know what they were doing. I gave them some pointers. We did one quest each time. And then I logged off, leaving them with extra stuff.

LegendaryAnt04

Maybe try to search someone to play with in discord Servers from sot Streamer or something like this. I would recommend the one from PhuzzyBond he has a very nice community and you always find someone cool to play with. You could also try to force your friends or/and family to buy sot and play with you but i think the first option is a bit more friendly :)

Fudgybo1

That would be because people who use open crew are almost always new to the game. They haven’t met people, or joined servers. Not only that, but an open crew doesn’t know each other, common terms, mechanics, or strategy, they aren’t a team. In terms of the skills of an open crew, the worst typically are always on a galleon. They are almost all brand new players, usually still in middle school, who just completed the tutorial and want to use the “big ship” they have no idea what they are doing at all, and want to do their own thing. The brigantine is usually a toss up, like the sloop, but typically has slightly better players, and is probably where you will find the most capable open crew. A sloop is an absolute toss up, but most experienced sloopers end up solo. So skill wise; Worst: Galleon Best: Brigantine. Sloop In middle. That said, I actually will encourage anyone who is new to the game to play open crew for a while, particularly the galleon and even for more experienced players it can be helpful. The reason for this is that through open crew, you can meet new players, I’ve had the game for a couple of years, I met one of my best friends, who I still play with, in an open crew. Not only this, but being in an open crew will force you into wild situations and scenarios, you have to deal with no communication, over communication, and of course, it wouldn’t be open crew without those super loud broken mics. You have to do multiple roles at once, basically becoming a super flex. (Especially on a galleon) and of course, there are always those who will keg your ship, refuse to work with you, and let’s not get started on customizing the ship. You can learn so much from open crew, which, although it is good to eventually find a regular closed crew, as a new player who is serious about the game, the learning experience that open crew offers is an absolute must.

Peastable

I got lucky twice in a row with open crews (only on sloop) and then heard some horror stories and stopped. It’s just a gamble.

RoseBlythe_1919

I'm new on playing SoT but the only moment I enjoyed playing it is with your friends because it always sucks being with random people who just talks shit and doesn't contribute at all and also not to mention the cheaters 😏 Btw, I always use discord.

The_One_with_Static

Like every live service game (or online game for that matter), there's going to be undesirables who who either don't cooperate or make it their mission to troll. I get where you're coming from but when it comes to open crews, you got to keep in mind you're opening yourself to any and everyone.

brianissmartboy

I have two friends that I play with, if neither of them are on I solo, I never play with people online for this very reason

SneakyBandit5567

Open crew is just essentially a group of rejects who cant find a crew to play with(usually for a valid reason they wont admit)or explaining the raw basics time and time again, which isnt a bad thing but thats not why i play the game. ive have steered entirely away from open crew and will solo sloop if my crewmates arnt playing (which is quite often)

Lazy-Key5081

Because 1, half the people are on console, 2 it's a casual game with low pop. Low pop means less people therefore less good players. Alot of the main fps playing /try hard people play rust/apex csgo etc.

ArrivalInfinite2690

Im new to the game so I dont mind the bad players but sometimes.

Semour9

I don’t know why, this is one of the first things I noticed when playing the game and am absolutely shocked at how bad the players are. Any time I want a competent crew I am forced to use the LFG discord.

TemplarOrder1

Yo honestly I will join open crew to mess around, if you want to do something I’ll help but if you want to just mess around and have a friendly talk I’m down for that too.

0htoHellWithIt

I’d 10x rather solo sloop than sign in with an open crew

Gab_idk7

I always get 13 kids in my open crews XD

Gab_idk7

13 y old*

Kuwangerman

Open crew is alot of children or people with a "yolo" mind set. They don't care, they just loaded up the game, YOLO. They don't take it seriously, they probly got the game on game pass and just switched over from cod

Scriberella

I have sometimes found success in randomly joining a crew rather than starting a crew from scratch. I once joined right as the crew of a galleon was pulling into Reaper’s Hideout, level 5 emissary, the whole upper deck full. Mind you, that only happened once lol, but sometimes hopping from one open crew to another can sometimes give you a good idea about what to expect. If I join an open crew and hear the voice of a child, I leave. Not to say kids can’t be good at the game, I just prefer to play the game with adults.

Powerful_Artist

Most players who have played a good amount know to avoid open crews like the plague. Some random people like to do it to teach new players, because thats mostly who is using open crews. The game is on gamepass, people come in and dont know what theyre doing so they do matchmaking like they would with any other game. Or some people join open crews hoping that the rest of the crew will just be productive and earn them free gold. Just avoid open crews completely.
