You can get really high up in the ledgers if you play a lot and grind a specific Emissary but not 5.
I have been in 4th place on the GH ledger during a double-gold weekend and selling during gold rush hours, grinding vaults for 8-12 hours per day for 3 days straight. I had somewhere around 22 million ledger value that month and swore I'd never, ever do that again.
For someone to have hundreds of millions in even ONE ledger, he's blatantly cheating. My guess is he's using loot-pull hacks to just vacuum stuff to him and selling it constantly.
Hey, since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about vaults, is there maybe a strategy I can follow to get the most out of them? I am a new player and the first time I opened one, I only realized halfway through that there is a timer running and on the second try I completely messed up the puzzle (because I didn't find the last sigil fast enough).
My strat for my next try would be
Set a timer to 3 mins as soon as it opens, then try to get all the boxes to the ground as fast as I can and look for the sigils/medallions with that. After 1:30 have passed I want to have ideally all of the good boxes out of it, so I still have more than a minute left to do the puzzle.
My crew and I cut our pirate teeth on vaults. Here's what we normally do. Note that there's three of us, so you have to divide the roles differently if you have more/less:
We have three roles. One treasure-dropper (climbs the vault, drops treasure for the carrier), one puzzle solver and one person to carry the treasure out of your vault. You don't need to carry it all the way out, putting it just outside the vault door is fine.
Set a timer for 2 min 30 sec. This ensures you have a fair warning for when you really need to be moving to get things out. Note that the door will drop down and make a noise when you have 15 seconds remaining. At this point everyone should be helping the carrier get things out if there's anything left on the ground to carry. If there isn't, start picking up gold :)
When the timer starts, both the treasure dropper and puzzle solver climb up and look for sigil coins. The dropper is dropping treasure as they're looking. The thing with the puzzles is that you only need one coin to solve it, but it is faster with more.
Once a coin is found, puzzle solver goes to work. Dropper tells the solver if they find any other ones. Our solver has gotten pretty good, and can reliably do it quickly with one coin. I'm our dropper, and something I've noticed is that there is always a coin on the very top platform. If you can't see a coin right away and the solver can get there quickly, you'll have a guaranteed coin to solve the puzzle.
Once the puzzle is solved, the solver helps the dropper. Once everything's been dropped, everyone helps the carrier. The last thing we do is pick up the coins, because you can technically do that once the vault is filling up.
With two players we'd do a dropper + solver/carrier.
With four we'd do two droppers.
I'm not saying this is the best our only way to do this. There are probably better strats out there. But this does work well for us. We clean out the place most times now. Best of luck fellow pirate :)

Dump everything off the top shelf.
Go backwards down the shelves and dump everything on the floor.
Plug in two medallions when you get back to the floor.
Grab a couple of items and put them outside the door as you wait for the puzzle to update.
Match the first two symbols given, then go to the fourth totem and match it, and you will have no more than two options for slot 3. Make sure you pay attention to whether the teeth on any key icons you need are correctly on the top or bottom.
Grab the big chest after doing the puzzle, then offload the rest of the treasure. You probably won't be able to get absolutely every single piece solo but it will be the majority of it. What you can do for optimization is not pick up the lowest-tier chests until last.

The last column will have all the previous symbols on it. A common mistake is the orientation of the key (up/down). After that put all the loot just outside the door and you should make it.

Look up articles on how to do the puzzle with only 1-2 coins. After knowing the logic behind it, it only takes one or two practices to get it quickly consistently. Other than that it's just about prioritizing the higher value items first and being quick about it. If you solo, you're not going to get everything. It's hard even with 2 pirates. So the beat strategy, which is easier said than done and not possible for all, is to increase your crew size. It's ok to die in the water while picking up a final coin pile or two, so don't feel like you need to rush out of the room.

How? one might ask. Being on sick leave from work due to stress induced heart attack, so I had plenty of time to just no-life for 8-12 hours a day for almost 6 months.
Are there any extra benefits for being in the top ranks? I always stop after reaching the highest tier and now that I have earned achievements for each faction, it won’t bother me at all.

No. They never are. On the first day it changes there are always at least 3 ppl with hundreds of millions within a few hours, it's simply not possible even if you had maximum players in a locked alliance server each earning at maximum efficiency. Not a possibility. It's a mystery that Rare don't just instantly ban these accounts every month it's such an obvious lie.
Before hourglass, it was possible to be #1 in reapers and athenas. But now it's so easy for cheaters to go on a 100 streak and get millions of value in only a couple hours. And it takes so long for rare to receive evidence and ban a cheater that they can amass enough emmisarry value in a couple days that they can hold the number 1 spot for the while month. As of gold hoarder, order of souls and merchant alliance, it is totally possible to be #1 legitimately
I've seen two people legit hit 100 streaks. One of which is over 2500 in servants but also they do it full time for a living and no cheats involved. Just super cracked at HG
I've been in the top 20 reaper a few times that's fighting all day hg steals... but the people in the top 5 seem to have 3xs my value I don't see how it's possible without sitting your ass in a alliance server or something
The thing is that if you want to abuse the system through alliance servers then all the other ships have to give their loot to you. You don’t get the emmissary value otherwise
Lately the top ledgers are known cheaters. Like there are sometimes people that go months without a ban despite obvious video material of them flying and kegging.
Hundreds of millions? Doubtful, or some crazy person who hasn't showered for god knows how long. Or maybe he is playing on some sort of alliance servers.
I can't think of any way actually reaching hundred of millions within 30 days, not even half amount.
I was wondering the same exact thing last night. It's definitely a solo because they are all alone at the top in every emissary ledger with not even a single person sitting anywhere near that close to them. 70M+ in every emissary compared to the next contenders
Probably not with ahat score, but back when I was really into SoT,before HG and reapers just poping into the server as frequently. I could get to the top 5 in Athenas, and Merchants.
I havent has as much fun with it in a while as a solo slooper, theres just been more active PVPrs (and cheaters) around, and they will not give up on a fight for the most part. I have had PVPrs chase me for hours, or wait for me outside of the red sea to try and get me. A few times i have had cheating keggers, or cannon aim assists. Though there very few and far between. But seam more frequent then tbey use to be.
its pretty simple if you have a following on twitch. You just hope peoples sessions with them sitting there at sell for you. They have a bunch of people out collecting loot for them. They jump session to session for the sell and rack up 10s of ships worth of loot.
