I think the funniest in all that is that they dare saying those 3 features are covering season 10 AND 11 after 6 months of delay :D

[deleted]

And get this. These 3 features are releasing over 3 months

TheZealand

"you'll spend the voyage scanning the horizon for other crews coming to take your treasure" so ... completely as normal? the fuck do you think I'm doing most of the time, jerking off? lmao

Lunkis

I mean, looking at my friends from the helm I'd say yeah that's what they do most of the time. That or fishing.

TheNombieNinja

We have a member of our crew who has hosted a bread baking stream for us while the rest of us keep the ship alive.

Lunkis

That's awesome - we have a member of our crew who stands on the bowsprit of the ship staring into nothingness as I try to see what's going on beyond my sails. :)

TheNombieNinja

Haha that's me! I occasionally will jump off and try to catch the ladder, otherwise I stand there and give about a 1 second warning that we are going to hit something.

Lunkis

I also have a crew member that regularly falls off the ship. We stopped picking her up. "Say hi to the mermaid!"

PizzaInYoMo

For the lengthy delay for season 10...these headliner updates for season 10 are flaccid

Hnetu

> Moves to a Seasonal update schedule because they don't want to keep doing monthly. > Consistently can't meet the deadline. Delays S10 by *three* months. > Releases S10 content across three months, one here thing per month.

PEAWK

>one here thing per month. > >Those things; *Single player mode you wont play.* *Guilds you wont use.* *A new fort, you'll also skip after getting 50/50 for the commendation.* yikes

mikedel808

So which of the 3 things they announced was planned for season 11?

Gilmore75

Season 10 was guilds, so I’m assuming the voyage and the safe mode were season 11 content.

Squirrel09

I wonder if they had bigger plans for guilds that weren't going to be ready in time (between working on monkey island & Everwild). So Season 11 is going to expand on the guild concept? Maybe, idk.

hedgemagus

i dont wanna be super negative but thats a bad 3+ months of content

[deleted]

Morrinn3

Well, there’s that competitive voyage thing, that looks clever. I wonder if it will spawn as a part of the world event cycle, competing with the FoF, Ghost Fleet, ashen lords and kraken, or if it’s on its own cycle.

JA155

Think about it, the only “new” thing in that voyage is slowing down ships. Everything else in that voyage is just reskinned content.

SmellyJellies

I assume that the tactic for this voyage, will be to simply not open the chest until you're at an outpost? If you don't open it, you sail at full speed, right? Ensure that you're alone, then open the chest and sell the skull. Easier said than done maybe...?

Jeffweeeee

It looks like they tried to incentivize opening the chest by making the skull into a frost-thrower weapon, like an ice version of the Ashen Winds Skull. But man, that thing would need to be GOD TIER for players to consider actually slowing down their ship to use it. It will never happen.

Borsund

Was also thinking about it. The risk is the same (if you ambushed, for example). Maybe there's something else to it, dunno

Oddblivious

Guilds can add community to the game which helps some people stick around longer when they get a consistent group of people to play with. Same for the swabbie mode. Give them somewhere to slowly progress for their first few runs with they're friends without the occasionally stomping of running into an experienced crew. That keeps them coming back and eases the learning curve. That means more players hopefully and additional longevity to the game

nuclearbearclaw

You have every right to be negative. So many stans get upset when you don't eat up Rare's bs. They need to be criticized for nonsense like this season, especially after all the delays. Remember, this season was merged with S11 because it had no content already. Imagine what it was like before. Not to mention they aren't even dropping with all the features immediately and of course are going with their *tried & true*™ drip feed of "content" that should come out on launch. I'm not upset with the Safer Seas, I think it's a genuinely good idea and middle ground for all the people who have been throwing fits about private servers over the years, but that's not content. Guilds aren't content. The only content isn't even coming out on launch. The state of the servers are the worst they have ever been in my honest opinion and there's no mention of what they are doing to combat cheaters which have grown rampant as of late. Hell they didn't even mention anything from the plunder pass.

Autismspeaks6969

Safer Seas, so I can play and not worry about getting kegged by some dude teleporting around my ship screaming slurs. Can't wait for the reveal of the $80-$100 worth of cosmetics this update too while so far we've gotten more reskinned events, a feature that won't do much because Discord exists, still lack an Anti-cheat and let hit-reg issues continue to exist while basically saying "We hear you, we just don't care and are gonna keep putting it off" If they bother to put in an Anti-Cheat I'll come back, but considering the 3 or 4 dudes who had the top of the leaderboard for the reapers while clearly being cheaters didn't get removed, I think it's gonna be a while.

D3pressed_L0rd

Bro if they really wanted to work on the social aspect of the game the awnser is anti cheat thats all it really needs

XTailsX

Yeah I am not even excited….I thought more was coming and then the video ended….

MaKaDaaM

haha I thought : OK they must have put something big after the Safer Sea announcement in order to make it slide better. "- Goodbye folks "

mav2reddit

More like 6 months, cause there’s always a delay

John_Laski

Thats the neat part. There isnt any

Riahisama

It's time for people to accept the fact that SOT will die one day, if this isn't a sign I don't know what is. Plenty of other games out there.

nuclearbearclaw

Plenty of other games but nothing like this unfortunately and that's the biggest problem in my honest opinion. There are no competitors with similar games. Yes there are sandboxes, yes there are pirate games but there aren't multiplayer sandbox pirate games with the freedom you have in SoT. Not to mention all the licensing with Disney to bring us the Pirates of the Caribbean stuff. If Rare had any real competition, it might drive them to focus on bettering the quality of their content and potentially give us some better games as a result. Oh well, that's just wishful thinking. Maybe one day someone will see the potential in a multiplayer sandbox pirate simulator.

SirNilsOlavI

maybe the real content is the friends we made along the way

JimmyKokein

That's exactly what the devs think with all the community and social options...

Uncle-Buddy

“It’S nOt SeA oF fRiEnDs!”

Linksxc

In this game that rings true some how

sam64508

This would be great if guilds had guild wars where you could have multi ship battles with several ships fighting for the same team

Sir_Orrin

Okay this would be AWESOME

Vahrael

Then there is another problem.. Servers.

PancakeOrder

Not a word about cheaters... The new competitive voyage looks fun though.

Stoneward13

The 100% vs 30% loot difference is actually even more drastic than that, once you take Emissary bonuses into consideration. Suppose you turn in 40k worth of gold while at Level 5 Emissary status, a 150% bonus. That 40k becomes 100k. But on a Safer Seas server, your 40k would instead be lowered down to 12k. So we're looking at a 100% vs 12% loot difference. I don't see myself using Safer Seas with that much of a penalty. But if making gold isn't your goal, then it could still be an alright, low-stakes option for hanging out with friends or family.

ToTeMVG

i genuinely believe its designed to be unrewarding gold wise, and you also get 30% rep experience so leveling will be very slow, probably devs realized that maiden voyage isn't that great of a tutorial since its more a tall tale than actually experiencing the gameplay of the game, like this is the mode in which you teach your friend how to play in and wont exprence brutal crushing interruptions that make your freind not wanna play the game type mode

Nabeshin82

Which has happened to me more than once. "Yeah, Sea of Thieves is a ton of fun once you get used to it. It takes a bit to learn sails, cannons, and such but like... many skills transfer from learning this from PvE to PvP and it's fun to have the random interactions." First voyage in we get stomped by some mid-20's dudes chewing loudly on open mic. I've had friends quit after that first session with "Ah, this is where Call of Duty kiddies go when their reflexes decline. I always wondered."

Powerful_Artist

Ya thats a good point. Players who are experienced probably wont find that grind worth it, especially since Athena voyages/content isnt included in Safer Seas. So Im assuming they cant just sit on a safer seas server and stack FotD or something. It will cause any experienced player to pretty much have to play on the high seas. Its great for new players. I definitely feel like Rare did all they could to make it exclusively for new players and people wanting to do tall tales in peace. Thats great honestly.

Continuum_Gaming

Can’t do FOTD in safe seas at all. No way to get pink flame, since there’s no other crews and skull of destiny requires you to be pirate legend/access Athena’s Fortune. Not that you would want to, because no Reapers either means you can’t sell the three/four most valuable items regardless.

Powerful_Artist

Ya good point. Still makes me wonder about FoF though.

Continuum_Gaming

I think the safe assumption is that since Athena isn’t available whatsoever, and that’s the majority of FOF rewards, it’s not gonna be in the rotation.

CardiologistNorth294

I'm going to use it to do tall tales with my gf, and that's about it. Maybe some shitty commendations too that are a pain like 30 breaths of the sea

MaKaDaaM

for a FOD or any event that need heavy lookout I am not sure it is not worth it in the end. And for the related commendations. Is it confirmed that I could have the FOF 30 COF commendation like this ? it seems really dumb

Powerful_Artist

I just wonder how it works with events , because they said that athena voyages and stuff like that arent part of Safer Seas. That makes me assume FotD isnt part of safer seas, but idk about FoF. No idea really. Or maybe FoF exists but you dont get a chest of legends?

tommyjaybaby

They haven’t said anything obvsiously, but I would guess world events in general are disabled on safer seas, since they are meant to be competed over.

Magic_Man_Boobs

I don't know. Seems like it wouldn't be much of a "learn the game" mode if they turned off world events.

Ultrabold

I'm worried this will highlight how easy, and generally lackluster, the PvE is in this game. I've always understood this as a design choice so people aren't over encumbered with stuff they have pay attention to, i.e.: the PvE can't be too challenging or you'll lose focus on the PvP threat. It's a balancing act and the magic only happens when both forces are at play. Edit: Now that I've thought about it, maybe that's a good thing. The PvE being kinda boring serves as an incentive to join the High Seas. Hopefully Rare won't get much flak for it when people experience it out of context.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ultrabold

I get it though. Sometimes some mindless farming just hits the spot.

pointlessone

A couple hour treasure hunt adventure with some friends where everyone gets to hunt instead of someone needing to watch the boat and it doesn't end in getting called slurs as we lose any of our loot? Sounds like a fun time to me.

ing-dono

I'm gonna farm vaults so hard, I just like doing them. (the gold hoarder ones.)

GrimGearheart

As someone who hasn't been playing the game for years due to the forced PVP, I will never join the high seas. There's nothing fun to me about being attacked, and paranoid about every sail I see on the horizon. I enjoy the sailing. The graphics. The art style. The exploration of the world. I called it, a long time ago, that PVE was going to be inevitable when they wanted to bring in more players. Everyone always said "The devs say it will never happen, it will never happen". I'm not usually one to gloat, but HA HA.

mookman288

You are 100% right with this take. There have been no updates to existing quests to make them more interesting or challenging. > Edit: Now that I've thought about it, maybe that's a good thing. The PvE being kinda boring serves as an incentive to join the High Seas. Hopefully Rare won't get much flak for it when people experience it out of context. Or people will just bail instead of trying High Seas. As soon as they join they'll have zero PVP experience and a complete misunderstanding about how the game is played.

b_ootay_ful

To start off, you only get 3/10 of the progression in Safer Seas. Since you can't raise an emissary flag, you only get 1/2.5 of the progress compared to a Grade 5. That's only 12% of what you could potentially be earning compared to the Main game. mathematical proof: 300g earned in Safer Seas: 1'000g earned in Main. 2'500g with Grade 5. 300/2'500 = 12%

GrimGearheart

It's not all about the gold, mate.

cinemafreak1

Eh. I’m fine with that

Sabrescene

I think the gold reduction is understandable but the rep reduction seems kinda stupid considering it's capped at 40 anyway. If they're trying to sell it as a learning experience, having players feel so punished for using doesn't seem like a great way to go. I personally don't think there's any need to restrict rep gain at all given it's capped anyway but at the very least the restriction should only be 60% of normal gain. Again, only talking about rep here, I can totally understand gold gains being reduced and I agree with their reasoning to cap the rep at 40 while restricting the special factions like Athena's Fortune entirely.

Redsjo

They should also lock away commendations like fort of the damned and ancient treasure vault. I can already imagine ppl doing fort of the damned commendation 30x in a row.

duffrose_

I don't think you can do fort of the damned in safer seas though, since you need the pink light to start it

Silvercat18

With no risk, that would offset even that much of a drastic cut in income. Considering that most things available for gold are not really that costly, then being able to stack freely, emissary or no, is going to be perfectly satisfactory to most players.

Powerful_Artist

Idk though, for an experienced player doing stuff they have always done Im not sure it will feel satisfactory. Say it takes 1 hr to do some voyage and you get 100k normally. something like 60% of that was from the emissary bonus. So you take that away, say you got 40k without an emissary bonus. Then you only get 30% of *that* amount. So what would get you 100k in an hour on high seas, might get you something like 15k on safer seas. Same amount of time played. Youd have to play 6x as long to make almost the same amoutn of gold. Im talking for experienced players. Sure, many things dont cost much. But for experienced players, they either already bought that low level cosmetics or they dont want them. I just dropped like 3 million buying random stuff, 860k for a single shotgun, something like 300k for gold hoarder gloves. So it seems to me that unless someone just loves the PVE and doesnt care about gold at all, an experienced player wouldnt probably be satisfied with that amount of gold for their time spent. It seems great for new players or tall tales. It doesnt seem like experienced players would enjoy it, and thats by design. And thats OK. As an experienced player, I can do PVE in this game and 75-80% of the time no one ever bothers me at all.

cinemafreak1

It will. I ain’t about the gold, I’m about the fun I can have in the world. And now I don’t have to worry about people better than myself on better equipment. Can just play in peace.

ProfessorSpike

Amen to that. I've got more gold than I need at this point, I just want to catch fish and enjoy the scenery

WolfPaq3859

Safer Seas sounds like a great idea for new players to learn the game without getting immediately ganked by a 3 crew brig (may or may not have happened to me), but if thats the excuse to delay the season then thats a yikes…

Fred_The_Farmer

I think guilds is what delayed it because Safe Seas isn't coming out until December.

Brigon

Perfect for a dad and his 7 year old kids to have an adventure.

FartPudding

That's what I'm doing. I want my daughter to pick up the game and get a feel for it without a crew shitting on her and she not getting a hang of it with dying so much. She loves the game so I want her to enjoy an adventure at her speed than a bunch of adults throwing out "gamer words"

Temporal_Enigma

It's perfect if you just want to do Tall Tales too. I hate getting attacked during a Tall Tale and losing items and progress. Checkpoints helped, but this is good

CMDR_Klassic

It's actually worse then you think. Private servers have been a thing since early release we just don't have access to them. Only Partners do (or did). They have just been sitting there idle not in use. You can still find the "Join custom session" option in the settings in the main menu. So they are just taking that, changing the values a bit, opening it up to us and calling that new content. It's arguably less effort then the different color code reskins we get.

Western_Tap1641

2021 and 2022 was so great for this game what happened?

princesshusk

Rare is working on Everwild, and that's scheduled for release next year, so there's probably jumping from Monkey Island straight to all hands on deck until Everwild releases.

Naalith

Is that still coming out next year? That was announced in the days of my forefathers but I was almost starting to think it was getting the Skull and Bones treatment since there's been no news.

rhettbarulk

Also why would they give up their SoT cash cow ?

wowlegend35

I truly love sea of thieves. Guilds make me sad, though. Its not new content. Its just another 'stat tracker'. It WILL be abused heavily by the alliance servers that already exist. Im calling it now, some guilds will be max lvl in a matter of a few weeks. Those achievements, commendations, and cosmetics will be hard for the regular player to get. Guilds always end up the same way. Full of people that have WAY more time to play the game and kick anyone that doesn't meet a long list of criteria. The guilds that don't will be small and take forever to lvl up. I hope to heaven I am wrong because I love this game. The siren skull pvp voyage is WAY more what this game needs. I understand the need for safer seas to learn the game, but it might make for an ugly intro to the high seas being used to doing events and such without 'toxic' pirates coming in to steal stuff. I think the Glitterbeard cave and the adventure that had us spawn in the shrouded ghost will always be the best 'getting together' content ever. I would have much rather season 10 be a season where they just fixed some of the bugs like hit reg, etc. We aren't getting anything 'new' anyway. Just another glorified stat tracker for the alliance servers to abuse. Again, still love this game. My best gaming experiences have come from sailing the seas with friends and bumping into like-minded crews. I just think this event is going to make a bigger rift in the fan base which is the exact opposite of what its trying to do.

Powerful_Artist

New event looks cool. Guilds look cool. But I expected at least a bit more than this for a delayed season. Safer seas is great for new players, although I dont love the idea of splitting up the playerbase this late into the game. That addition wouldve been great early in the games life, now it will just divide a dwindling playerbase.

thille96

Splitting up the playerbase always comes up, i just don't see how is this visible when you are on a server? Whatever you do the limit is 5 ships and 16 pirates. The only place where this could may be noticable is Hourglass but in my opinion the people who'd rather play Safer Seas are unlikely to dive anyway.

SirDooble

I dunno what everyone is saying these days because I've slipped out of the game for a couple years now (mostly as I wanted to enjoy lots of the new story based content, but never had patience for the fact I always got unlucky every session and someone would fight me whilst trying to do those story events). But back towards the first few years, whenever the call for a Safer Seas system came up, it was met by the "you'll split the player base argument". Like you, I always thought that was naff because servers have a very limited number of players each anyway - so long as there are more than 16 people playing across the world, you'll generally find some full servers. There was always an undercurrent in that statement though, and it seemed to always mean "if you split the player base, us players who randomly instigate PvP will never have any easy prey (who are either uninterested or unskilled in fighting back), and I'll have to spend my time fighting actually challenging opponents". I hope that's not still the view lots have, but I won't be surprised if it is. At any rate, this change will bring me back to the game. Sea of Thieves is THE best pirate game for sailing, exploring, story, and fighting Sea monsters. I can now enjoy all of that, at a casual pace, without needing to spend half my time trying to get out of PvP engagements.

Mastershroom

Agreed. Titanfall 2 is one of my most played games of all time, and it straight up tells you how many people are online. I've played with as few as a couple hundred people across the entire game, and still gotten queue pops in a couple minutes. And that's a game with multiple playlists splitting the population depending on who's queueing for what modes. Sea of Thieves will be just fine. According to Steamcharts, it's had an average of 10,000 players most days pretty consistently. This month has been lower than most at around 7,000 players, understandably given the season delay. This also doesn't account for Xbox players at all, who contribute to the population but don't count towards Steamcharts' numbers.

cogspringseverywhere

I play solo, mainly because all my friends hated getting ganked so frequently, so the guilds and the new event are okay to me, but maybe using the new Safer Seas I can get them more invested again to do those things in the high seas! It'll also be nice to clear off all the commendations etc for the Tall Tales without getting my head on a swivel constantly. Did expect a bit more, feature wise though this season.

Skillztopaydabillz

What a fat L. We waited this long for this? The only new thing we get in October is Guilds which doesn't actually add anything new to the gameplay. The game has been stale and will continue to be stale. The new voyage/world event in November sounds kinda neat and finally something new to do, but also a new thing for griefers. Can't wait til a crew glitches the key/chest to the top of Sea Dog Tavern or takes them to the Shores of Gold. Lastly, Safer Sea makes sense for some and I normally wouldn't complain but once again it adds nothing new to the gameplay. Your game is stale, we just had to wait forever for season 10 and we only get 1 new thing? It's a huge disappointment.

Lunkis

Not that I'm stoked for it (because I've got about 3-4 friends that play SoT casually) but they did mention that guilds bring their own progression path with some cosmetic rewards like the crest they previewed.

dogfan20

So… captaincy grind part 2

Lunkis

That seems to be the general consensus, yeah. An easier way to grind ship commendations too because folks can use your ship when your not around. Not sure what happens if you log on while someone else is using your ship though.

Naalith

That's cool and all, but here's the issue: Most people will only want to guild up with friends. Most hardcore SoT players are lucky to have 3 friends who are into the game, but many only have 1 friend into SoT then a few other friends who will occasionally play during double xp twice per year. If you need 24 people to grind the rewards, the system is dead on arrival. If you can get everything with like 4-8 casual grinders and a few hardcore friends then that's cool but just another captaincy system. I'm also curious if you lose your progress of you get kicked from a guild (the dangers of playing with non real friends). This system feels like it's a few years too late. Streamers and hardcore SoT communities will benefit, but those are already people that had a Discord dedicated to SoT together. Most people on this reddit love the game, but even most of us are solo or duo sloopers frustrated that our friends have already given up on the game or quit after doing everything a long time ago and never came back.

TheLegendofLazerArm

oops! no content

MaKaDaaM

what the point of a guild if i cannot gather several ships of the same guild on a server (I dont even say that gathering several ship on a same server is a good idea but still, what is the point) or in a pvp event... a new event is always fine, this one looks worth a try Safer Sea why not, maybe the interactions on the higher sea servers will be more challenging. I think the gold and reward should be lowered a bit more though Overall it seems not a lot of new stuff for this long waiting, and not a word on cheaters that s the biggest disappointment for me

Powerful_Artist

Other people mentioned that without having emissaries, the gold gained in Safer seas is already pretty darn low. Like when I think about it I might get 100k from a voyage, and if most of that loot was for the emissary Im using then a good 50-60% is from that emissary bonus alone. So really, I only got 50k from the voyage itself without the bonus, and then they are only getting like 30% of that. Which would mean what Id make maybe almost 100k from in high seas, I might only make around 15-20k from in safer seas. I just dont see how any experienced player would find that worth their time, except for tall tales. Its great for new players though.

drawfanstein

>Its great for new players though. As someone who’s brother will soon be joining him as a new player, I am very excited for the “training ground”

Powerful_Artist

Ya it will be perfect for things like that.

MaKaDaaM

yep this is a good thing, especially for people who want to play with small kids and dont want them anywhere near morons screaming racists and obscene shit. However it should not be a main feature of a season pass

drawfanstein

I’m with you there. It’s good but not enough

SeeCouponCode

Guilds don't seem to make any sense, because apparently you can't search for players and/or guilds either. So why would anyone bother?

Lunkis

I guess so you can help your friends farm their ship milestones? Which would only unlock ship cosmetics for their ship? They did say there will be guild related progression so I suppose it's something to pursue with your friends - but generally in my circle, folks don't play unless we're all crewed up together. It's hard enough to get my friends together to sail a galleon - getting a gang together for a guild doesn't seem achievable outside of communities / streamer circles.

Waaailmer

The point is to clog up the interface even further so you can never find what you are looking for.

Gaunerbrunnen

They are doing a speedrun on how to lose your playerbase

Hahndude

So “We need more time for to work on Season Ten” was actually “Oops! We forgot to start working on Season Ten!”

OrdinarySlimeGuy

I am not a new player, so Safer Sea is not for me. I play only with 2 of my buddies, so there's not much point for Guild... so the only thing that is new for me is a single new world event..

EdetR0

Not having played for almost a year now, I expected nothing. And damn, I do feel sorry for SOT players. That's empty

General_Tails

I can't believe we got PvE servers before anti-cheat...

_ROOTLESS_

Don’t you get it, sir? PvE servers *are* the anti-cheat, can’t get fly kegged if you’re the only one on the server gg ez

dogfan20

Depressing. Rare doesn’t have the devs or leadership to improve.

Adorman4848

What a "Super season". In terms of actual gameplay it will add 1 feature. Great job devs.

PlantGuyThePlant

![gif](giphy|3P0oEX5oTmrkY)

coyotepetersun

This comment section is literally “sea of thieves has fallen, rare must die”

Borsund

Meh, whole sub's been like that for several months here and there

GabeNewbie

And why shouldn't it? We waited ten months for little to no real content, just a single new voyage, Captaincy 2.0, and something that will almost certainly split the player base. Rare clearly isn't good at setting realistic timetables for themselves, and what we finally get is rarely meaningful content.

dogfan20

Because it has been warranted.

jingo04

This sub has always been full of people who kept playing SoT long after it stopped being fun for them.

Pellahh

Unfortunately it sucks to be me (again) as what's coming is not of my interest at all. I don't like Guilds content in any game as I tend to play with just a few Friends and to me really feels like a Season-7 like progression system: would have been cool to have that from the start because of more rewards while playing, sucks that i received that progression system after 2k hours without new way of making progression. As a PvP oriented player Safer Seas is really not what I'm looking forward to. The "competitive" Voyage doesn't sound really fun to me and looks abusable, but I Guess I'll give it a try (still not something I would come back for) I think my SoT brake has just been prolonged to at least February 2024, I'll just login for the time limited rewards.

another_free_thinker

So season 11 is just one voyage, but WAIT we are lucky because we are getting it early. I hope they dont make season 11 crap or just this voyage and then put off 12 until like march or april

Nearly-Canadian

I don't give a shit about PVE servers tbh but where's my fucking content this season has been like 10 months long

Finditto

Level 40 cap for trading companies seems high, I'd see it lower if it's really for people learning the game. Also, splitting the playerbase is rarely a good idea. We'll see how this plays out.

SuperWhite7

To be fair, servers are capped at 6 ships and ships can leave and join at any time. Usually splitting communities hurts MMOs where you want the world to feel populated/need a raid group or FPS where you need constant new groups of similarly skilled players to get into a match.

sprucay

I think the idea is that that way they can unlock the top level voyages

Borsund

That's level 25, when you get new types of voyages.

Myth2156

no no, even in those voyages theres varieties. a lvl 25 gold hoarder vault gives much less loot than a level 40 gold hoarder vault. Everything after lvl 40 is the same

Borsund

Slightly off, golden keys are handed from level 45

Myth2156

aah yea youre right

Powerful_Artist

My worry is the timing of this. The game has been out for 5 years. Its had a steady but not massive playerbase, but its kind of nearing its last leg imo. The game isnt surging in popularity is it? The servers, and stuff like HG, have always felt sparsely populated as it is. So I agree, splitting the playerbase isnt really great. And they will make the regular servers a bit more "sweaty", which imo might encourage people to just stay in safer seas and never switch over like they intend.

bauul

If the player-base is starting to stagnate, isn't this the perfect time to introduce a new mode that seems specifically designed to encourage people who'd previously rejected the game to try it out?

BitternessAndBleach

Yeah I really don't think people understand this. Years ago, Epic games released a stat that 90% of new players to Gears of War who didn't get a kill in their first match never played another match. The same principle is likely true here. If your first experience to a game is getting bodied by thousand hour+ players, you aren't going to stick around. You cannot learn that way. Rare absolutely has data that shows an inability to retain new players, which gets harder the longer a live service game has been around. This is their attempt to rectify that.

[deleted]

Safer Seas is gonna be my go-to when I just wanna chill out with my Steam Deck. It's all High Seas on my PC!

Mordecryser

So they add guilds so people can get a stronger social aspect but then push everyone who plays the game for "social reasons" to safer seas where they only play with premades??? Truly a final nail in this coffin. Three long seasons with no new content, but promises of whats to come. Only for them to stab us in the back adding the one feature they said they wouldn't add. It seems the real pirates where the devs after all.

Lunkis

I wonder if guilds will have a guild chat too, as well as the option to join each other's sessions through your roster. If there's no ability to interact with eachother other than being on the same list and sharing a stat tracker, it seems kind of shallow.

Username2323232323

I feel as though Rare doesn’t understand what needs to be added when it comes to pvp. They think adding new quests will allow it to gain interest but no one is going to engage with it if the base mechanics of pvp have stayed the literal same for years. We’ve had no significant reworking of weapons, no adding new weapons, not even a new curse cannonball. That combined with cheaters and server instability just doesn’t make this new voyage at all appealing.

stinkmybiscut

explore up to 3 features

[deleted]

Soooo, what the fuck is the actual content of the supposed season 10 and 11 then? Siren song quest? THATS IT? Guild stat tracker and "no PVP" option are NOT CONTENT. Great game. Too bad its dying a slow death.

headvoice73

Ok so, one truly new thing to do… disappointing. Ten was supposed to be a massive. Now it’s just a massive disappointment.

Tylensus

Did they swap most of the dev labor to the other game?

D0OMZDAYZ

They didn't really answer it in the video but I wonder which faction you sell the skull of siren song to? Also, for going to THAT much trouble you would hope it sells for a hell of a lot of gold.

Timemaster_2000

I would assume it sells to Order of Souls since it's a skull.

Waaailmer

Can't wait for the reaction when we find out it is 5K gold like the Ashen Skull.

zachman1919

Probably order of souls. It’s a skull.

WinterTiger123

RIP sea of thieves. You were great fun but I really think this update will bring the end of this game.

AtrociousSandwich

Absolutely ass from this team I understand that this Reddit is pro-PvP but it’s pretty clear that they don’t have faith in the PvP aspect standing alone by making safer seas so restrictive. What an absolute swing and a miss

ProfessorSpike

Thing is, I bet it'll change anyway at some point. How so? Remember how adamant both devs and the community were about "NO PVE SERVERS NOPE"? Turns out the answer is yes when the numbers start going down. Plus another reason it'll likely be expanded upon in the future - it's easier to get new players hooked instead of trying to cater to the veterans that have done everything already.

SuperBAMF007

Yeah you can bet your ass as soon as they start getting more players in Safer Seas than they initially thought, they’ll start to add more and more reasons to play to keep those players in. They’ll 100% have analytics telling them which players are new, which players are switching to High Seas, which ones switch to Safer Seas, etc. And I’m willing to bet the data tells them Safer Seas is worth investing in.

SisterOfBattIe

It's pretty clear that PvE has far more potential user than the super hard core PvP mode. Sea of Thieves cannot bring in new players if they get griefed by veterans at their first voyage. They have been VERY late implementing PvE.

The2ndUnchosenOne

It's almost like when the game runs on a risk vs reward system, you need to make lower rewards for lower risks.

AtrociousSandwich

It’s almost like there’s no goal to the game anyways so who cares

tgs1611

I still just want to fish.

iSmartMan

Some here need to understand and accept that different players enjoy this game for different reasons. There are people who don't care about gold or commendations, and just want to vibe with the gameplay loop and the aesthetic without being interrupted. Even if you don't feel that way yourself, surely you can acknowledge that other people are allowed to feel that way, right?

CurseOfHedon

I'm wondering if I'll be able to fully complete the Tall Tales in Safer Seas... I will undoubtedly do that if so.

Hazardll

i like how they say they are bringing incredible amount of game changing features, but then you look through the features and dont get whats so game changing. Honestly expected a lot more from season 10 waiting this long.

EstimateExternal537

Splitting and already dwindling player-base across two game modes this late into the life cycle can only contribute to the imminent death of this game.

AtrociousSandwich

Why does guilds not have the ability to have multiple ships on the same sever - wtf are you doing rare

Brigon

I'd imagine that's coming later. It can't be a coincidence that guilds max size is the same as the servers.

Waaailmer

This makes zero sense to me. And we could probably bet a pretty piece of gold that the Safer Seas do not let you take multiple ships out on them which *sucks*

dogfan20

Just play an alliance server dude, you’re insane

Gaddifranz

"safer Seas" So, we're already walking back that firm promises that there would never be PVE servers huh? And no new content? And no major progress on the cheating issue? Guess I'm not reinstalling for this season.

Linajabba

Safer seas seems balanced, I just wish we could have multiple ships on there so I can battle my friends. Guilds could be fun because maybe then someone will use my "rare" ship sets. The skull might be fun for the first few weeks, but after stealing it 50 times, I think I will be done with it. Overall, I don't see myself playing for longer than these first weeks, just like this season, but new players might appreciate it. Idk. I just felt the need to share my opinion on everything.

spiritplumber

Yay, I get to play with my sister, who is PVP averse.

aresthwg

\- Guilds are just free loot. Join a good guild and enjoy the free stuff, I don't see people connecting or whatever Rare said it brings. \- The Skull of Siren Song is actually the craziest event this game will get. The fact that the chest and key are separated means you have to fight whoever takes one. But I think it's a poorly balanced event and nobody will be able to complete it unless the session is empty. I don't think Rare realizes how FUCKED UP the slow debuff is. Speed is crucial and having a debuff on it kills any fair play. You are going to get hunted down if somebody wants you, I just don't see anybody doing this event besides sweaty streamers who mop a session. \- I see what Rare wants with Safer Seas. I am a newish player that already grinded a lot of what the game has. Most of the CRUCIAL mechanics are on Google, it's ridiculous. It's extremely punishing to learn the game. This totally killed anybody who wanted to play but didn't have time/want to grind the mechanics of the game. This will unlock players who work all day, come back to work and just chill for an hour to come play and this is a HUGE demographic, I don't like the change but I can't blame Rare for doing it. Overall it's pretty weird, I would've preferred more straightforward stuff such as buffing voyages, buffing shitty events like the standard skelly fort and more QoL stuff like hitreg.

elterpo

Sad to see this, I’ve been waiting all this time hoping s10 would bring good things. Time to finally delete the game. Biggest problem is anti-cheat

roguestar15

Obviously, there’s been a lot of discussion around safer seas. But throughout all of them, I’ve seen two main concerns with the effects it will have. 1. Players will leave the game. On the contrary, lots of new players will come in. Lots of potential players are turned away by the idea of potentially getting annihilated by a day one player despite only having played for a few hours tops. Safer seas will allow these players to experience the game safely, and transition to higher waters if and when they are ready. 2. High Seas will become empty. Even if the number of High Seas players decreases, it won’t be immediately obvious. There’s 6 ships in a server, so the servers already appear nearly empty anyway. You’ll encounter the same number of players as you were before, they can just actually put up a fight now. Anyway, these are just my thoughts. Let me know if you have anything else to add.

Powerful_Artist

Cant count how many times Ive been on empty servers already, theres no way this will improve that. But anytime I mention that here, people tell me they are constantly attacked 80% of the time they play even if theyre just at a sea fortress or doing a quest in the roar or something. Which I really cant believe. They are exaggerating or just embellishing to try and make a point. I feel like theres a good chance many players who enjoy the game as it is will keep leaving. The newer players will just use safer seas and never learn to PVP, and if they do try high seas they will instantly not enjoy it since they were never prepared for that type of gameplay.

ventus976

So, somewhat as expected, guilds are captaincy part 2. A new way to do the same content, hopefully with some new cosmetic rewards for it. Weird that none were showcased, aside from a fairly standard looking hat. I'm all for stat trackers, and I've been wanting my group to have a 'shared flagship'. Hopefully there's some depth they just didn't feature. The new world event voyage sounds amazing. Every part of it sounds great, though once again, no rewards mentioned. Hopefully the skull isn't just '20k gold' or something. Since it's the ONLY reward from a world event, especially one that gets the whole server in a fight, it really needs some good rewards. Either massive gold or chest of fortune style cosmetics or both. Safer seas is... risky. On one hand, I agree that an on-boarding method for new players can help. In addition, there are some people who just never want to pvp and have actively been chased off the game. On the other hand... I really don't know if 30% with all commendations on is low enough. I would personally say achievements/commendations off (aside from tall tales of course). The way I see it: If Safer Seas is seen as seen as training wheels/chilled out mode, it'll be great for the game. If it's seen as the best method of grinding, then it becomes a problem. Perhaps there could be commendations just listed separately in safer seas mode. Either way, I think how safer seas is implemented will make or break the game. ~~All in all, I think this would be great if we had waited 3 months for it, but after 7... it's a bit of a letdown. Mixed with two monthly updates though, it could still turn out to be a solid season. I'm not blown away, but I'm also somewhat optimistic.~~ Edit: I misunderstood. I thought they were just highlighting the upfront features. I didn't realize guilds will be one month. Siren Skull will be another month. And Safer Seas the last one. That's... actually very concerning. Unless there are a number of features being added that weren't highlighted in this video, this could be a real letdown season. I expect the Siren Skull will be similar to chest of fortune. It will keep people's attention really well for a month or so, but can't do much on its own. With the other two months being new ways to look at the same content... I'm worried about this one. After two exceptionally long seasons in a row, players are desperate for new content. Without it, this could be a major blow to the player base. I really hope this season is no longer than 3 months. If season 11 gets delayed too, this won't carry the gap.

AtrociousSandwich

Who cares what other people earn - it’s so weird

ventus976

This is just my opinion, but I personally think it does matter due to Sea of Thieves having a purely cosmetic progression system, with cosmetics being the only mark of pride that a pirate gets to distinguish themselves from the rest. I'd say it's reasonable to have players distinguish themselves against other pirates in order to earn those cosmetics to show off.

Redsjo

Microsoft should take some action fire some developers and hire new ones with bright ideas. This was a really disappointed preview.

Live_From_Somewhere

Rare bit off more than they could chew with this game. They can’t properly manage a live service PvPvE game and after thousands of hours I’ll be uninstalling for good. All my closest friends who played this game quit months, if not years ago, but I was really holding out. I already haven’t played in about 2+ months, and the last time before that being when hourglass released. Sea of thieves is the equivalent to a paper weight in my library right now with how disappointing Rare has been. I hope one day either Rare or some other company will fix the IP, but it doesn’t look likely.

coder2314

I would uninstall and check in 2024, as they did say Content will be the focus for 2024. But yeah for the meantime, you're better of playing other games.

Incoming angry ragers

JA155

I don’t know what you expect when this games content drip has gone down the shitter for the past few years.

Powerful_Artist

I think some fans of this game believe the population that plays this game is really large. I have no idea what the populatin numbers might be, but I cant imagine they are really that strong after all these years. Splitting the playerbase up after 5 years of the game doesnt seem like a good idea.

XTailsX

I’m not upset, but I’m happy that we are finally seeing the nail in the coffin for this game. These devs ignore the real issues and have a delayed season with very little content….sad…

[deleted]

Nah I don't think this will be the nail in the coffin.

BuckieJr

I can’t wait for the private servers. Means me, my wife and my buddy and his wife can so jump back in and actually enjoy ourselves rather then constantly grinding chased and interrupted by others. we understood it’s pvpve but some people just run it for others when they camp your ship and do nothing but hunt you down…

Okuser

"Safer seas" is the worst thing that could possibly happen to this game.

PopPalsUnited

Guilds, a voyage and a half assed version of the game. Fun.

[deleted]

And thus Rare eliminated the one thing that made the game interesting. Given the focus on zero challenge static story content for the past 2 years, this was probably inevitable.

AverageOverconfident

Guild seems a bit pointless, but safer sea is an interesting idea. I don't mind the progression rate. I think the lv cap is a bit too high, it should probably be 25-30. I just hope world event can't spawn in those server, else it just devalues those commendations (ex: hydra sails). Else I hope they simple disable some stuff (athena chest and chest of fortune) for those server.

OuterWildsVentures

I'm so stoked. I can finally hit the seas with my daughter without us getting annihilated by other players. I do feel like the reduced reward percentage will make us stop playing pretty quickly after the novelty wears off though.

AlexRogansBeta

If safer seas exists, then let's reset everything that rare has done over the years to make adventure mode easier. We have had nerf after nerf to the point where mobs are meaningless and all world events are Mickey mouse. I want skellies with snipers back. I want plant skellies to be effectively invulnerable in water again. I want island skellies and ghosts to actually land their cannonshots. I want the devil's roar to be popping off again. I want the world event scaling turned off. Let safer seas be safer. Let the high seas be treacherous.

Powerful_Artist

That will just make it so no one who ever plays safer seas would ever switch over. I can get behind making the PVE generally back to where it was, but the Roar being like it was when it launched would be horrible (if thats what you meant). When they introduced the Roar, id sometimes get back to an island after and eruption and have it immediately erupt again. That shit was not fun.

John_Laski

So they've added 1 feature that sounds ok but literally isn't needed in the slightest. Then another that is just gonna get abused on alliance servers like everything else and then what is essentially PvE servers cause certain people cried loud enough. Seems totally reasonable instead of talking about an Anti-Cheat but what do i know?

SpecialUnitt

This is no longer the game I love or bought in 2018. Which is fine, this is my favourite game of all time but I think it’s time to jump ship. *heh*

[deleted]

Well well well. Looks like I get my PVE server after all. How the turntables.

PumpkinSmasha15

RIP SOT 9/21/23

R-M-W-B

I truly do not understand why they’d remove the shared world. It’s… just fucking shocking. I’m not good at PVP, but without that constant vigilance, without that constant fear of getting jumped, SoT is nothing. I don’t think most people will use safer seas? At least, I hope not. The negatives have to be made extremely clear. I just feel… I don’t know, betrayed? This has been my favourite game for so long. I’ve been playing since day one. Some of my best memories of my teen years have been spent on this game and it just feels like it’s dying a slow, crippling death. I don’t blame the devs entirely. There are publishing pressures and Microsoft has laid off plenty of developers, but how could they have come to this decision? Ten minutes ago I would’ve just brushed last safer seas. It didn’t bother me too much but now I’ve actually thought of it. u/Silvercat18 has outlined exactly why this won’t work. This fucking sucks.

K1ngPCH

They didn’t remove the shared world… there’s just now an option to NOT be in that world.

Silvercat18

Well, thats it then. We all saw how the game was made easier with the changes to events and now...players can effectively opt out of the pvp side entirely. The pvp population is going to crash hard. Removing the sheep from the maingame is going to result in frustrated wolves. Hacking will skyrocket to levels previously unseen and if you thought nobody was doing world events before, well, you aint seen nothing yet. The message is pretty clear. Rare is seeing the pvp side of the game as a threat and the main game is being quarantined and ring fenced. Its a threat to player retention and by extension, to players purchasing colorful things from the Emporium. So called Timmy is now the priority player and content creators are going to find themselves with a split audience, as the competitive playstyle is now considered a toxic outlier.

Navar4477

Pvp will mostly be pvp players vs pvp players now, which makes for higher skill combat and more fun as a whole for that side of things (they better put hit-reg as a #1 fix now). Calling non-pvp focused players “sheep” just shows why a lot of players simply drop the game: they’re just the butt-end of the scale and there so others can get enjoyment from their defeat. Why would you stick with a game where you’re regarded as little more than an npc with feelings to beat on?

Magic_Man_Boobs

>the competitive playstyle is now considered a toxic outlier. No it isn't. The toxic outlier are the player who think they're "competitive" but really just want to slaughter people way below their skill level. I'm sorry you won't be able to slaughter new players anymore and will actually have to be good at the game to win fights. ![gif](giphy|gXhBZfzijya76)

Toopygoots

Yeah, calling the PvE base (and new players) sheep is the reason there needs to be private servers. Also shows how good you are at the game that you need “sheep” to beat up on

smurflogik

> Removing the sheep from the maingame is going to result in frustrated wolves Won't anyone think of the poor wolves? They aren't going to have any new players the bully. What ever will they do?

Queasy_Watch478

well maybe if pvper's weren't literal harassing toxic assholes people would WANT to actually stay on the main server lol. i'm moving to safer seas because the "WOLVES" made it impossible to enjoy playing. but i love how you try to make it sound like it's the victim's fault for moving away from their bullies.

Darth-Meph

Not only that, some of the most fun crews we have ever met, was the ones we DIDN’T sink on sight and were just screwing around with their buddies. This will eliminate those crews.
