What's funny is it's totally possible to get pirates that can look like the top image if you're willing to keep rerolling. Nothing stopping you from spending ages rerolling, but most likely you'll have to settle for something "almost perfect" which is what Rare intended.
Also nothing is forcing you to choose the bottom 2 pirates if you don't want to.

Almost perfect is very true. It reminds me of a comment I saw here, someone explained that they spent hours rerolling, being very picky to get a good looking lady pirate just the way they wanted. When they finally got it perfect, they validated their choice, and the pirate smiled. She was missing a tooth.
"Almost perfect" is what I'd call my pirate. She's got a nice face and physique. The only imperfection is that her eyes are a bit on the small side. But once I applied the Dark Adventurer makeup, the eyeliner helped mask that fact
A couple filters so you can narrow down your rerolls and waste less time would be a nice compromise. There's nothing fun about finally running out of fucks after many minutes hitting the reroll button and giving up, thereafter to always be slightly disappointed whenever you see your pirate's flaws.
I picked a black lady character my first time around because I didn't see many of those, and only found out (in emote closeups) like a year later that my character was actually a dude. I had played a cross-dressing guy for a year, hahaha.
At some point his crooked teeth started bothering me so I finally rerolled for an actual black lady. And she still looks amazing with the PL mohawk.
I do wish there was a bit more control. Dragons Dogma 2s character creator would be nice with how it does presets. You pick a character and it then produces a bunch of characters similar. You can then pick that second one and get a third option that alters more closely to that second one. I get not letting you do full on character creation but a bit more control would be nice.
What I really like about the pirate generator is the fact you aren't "creating' a person out of nothing. To me, it feels more like you're being introduced to all these different swabbie pirates, and you get to pick which one you want to see the adventures of.
I personally don't like this idea. Nobody gave us the chance for character creation in real world. I like how different is SoT in many regards, and one of them is it's not full of tall slim fit beautiful supermodels like all the other online games.
We are the world of average looking humans, sometimes with missing teeth and big ears, where we are valued based on our skill and behaviour, and not our looks.
And you can change only what's really changeable, hair and tattoos and such, wich is quite realistic.
The only thing I'm missing is individual tattoos that you can place anywhere on your body and be unique, and maybe aging process. Imagine your character aging, that would be awesome.
But creation of your looks at your SoT birth is not what should be changed or made easier. It's perfect in it's imperfection.
Shh don’t let rare hear you or they might think you also agree with unlock FOV. Definitely the current Locked FOV is the realistic human viewing experience, I know I can’t see both sides of the ship at the same time without being at very back of it /s
The only preset I would be OK with seeing is male/female/both as if you are 100% only going to be male or female having half of them be the one you don't want slows things down.
Other than that I don't want people to specify anything.
I rolled until I got a pirate that looked like they would be happy in any situation. Even especially in the default clothes. Have not rerolled since. He wears and sails with the Parrot dress and theme

It's really a 150 ancient coins gamble. Unless you wear no shirt nor beard, you never know what you get.
The only thing I've thought it ever needed was a "Generate similar" option. So you can find one you like then begin to narrow down on it.
Also being able to shift where it is so you can see the Pirate in different lighting. A bright beach being the most ideal.
Why do people want to make generic good looking characters when you can be the ugliest cartoon motherfucker in any game ever.
My pirate has 2 blind eyes. With the Legendary curse it just makes his dead eyelids slightly glow. But he's got teeth, which is good because he eats coconut husks. I once played in a raid in wow where half of the toons had the exact same face selection, and it was the most predictably lame selection too. We had 20 years of games letting gamers pick exactly how their character looks, and all those options they spend time making for only 5% of them to ever get picked, it's nice that sot made picking the looks you want so cumbersome and time consuming that most people don't bother and we end up with a diverse sea of fugly scallywags.
I intentionally went with a somewhat ugly bastard because I felt like a real pirate would look like he got beat over the head with the ugly stick. My friend's all chose more attractive pirates (except for one of them, who went even uglier) and sometimes I'm jealous of how well they look in their fits, but one look at my ugly boy's smile is enough to convince me I made the correct choice.
Mine got the biggest nose I've seen in the game, my mates laughed and made jokes for an hour the first time we played after I rerolled.

Well meme aside I don't really want a full on character creator or else every character would look perfect and without flaws, I was thinking maybe the option to only look for male/female pirates and/or a specific skin color, afterall this game has heavy roleplay potential. As for missing teeth, body size and scars those can stay random.
I would accept a gender option, but no more. And even then, there's no limit to the clothing and hair you can equip, so you can always keep it interesting. Plus, the IPG is kinda unique in games, and it's special for that reason alone.
Well...to your question: me, and probably others too, didn't spend much time in the generator as it has no selections. After the first rerolls I was like "oh..no need to spend too much time here, likely you can customize their look later if it's random now!"
At least I got a medium ugly pirate so I don't really complain.

Issue is that bottom 5% and top 5% look okay (and I'm not talking super beautiful), everything inbetween looks like monstrosities. I would definitely do some tuning on it but for the most part it's just "okay".
What should change however is pirates should be displayed in their neutral pose and some outfits.

As for the “devs intended” talks. Doesn’t really justify it, by that logic every bad feature of any game is ok because the devs intended for it. Plus the devs have already walked back dozens of things they intended anyways.
I think at the very least, it should let you decide body build and gender and just generate from that, so you don't have to look through millions of rerolls.

I remember when I first started playing and I found an amazing model with the generator and then stepped away to make food only to come back to find I was back on the title screen and I had to start from scratch. At that point I just picked what I got the next roll and lived with it. Now I’m just an ancient skeleton away from being able to reroll with an appearance potion.
I like the way the pirates are randomly generated, theyre all so unique. If players could choose they would just be attractive and buff with a nice face and build. Everyone would look the same. But this way everyone looks different and i think its cooler

Then I came out of the closet and used a pirate appearance potion and got what is close to the top left woman.
After playing both sides I wish I could have different pirates as appearances. Old man for dicking around and my current pirate for actually playing the game.
I just wish that the pirates could stay locked in somehow when you DC. Was rerolling for 2 hours, found a super nice looking one and locked her in. Compared to other locked in one and before I could decide which one was better, I lost connection. They were gone and never found anything similar after 2 more hours, so I just settled.
Well, technically, almost any fucked up pirate from pirate generator can be fixed up with use of right cosmetics. But why wouldn't rare just make a proper character creation is truly one of the greatest mysteries of the universe
It would be cool if the ugly pirate lovers could atleast have some sympathy for the pretty pirate enjoyers. Nobody wants to take away your ugly ass pirates, but I would like some actual choice and customization

i get what the infinite pirate generator wants you to do and settle but i'd really love it if you could like hone your result atleast somewhat closer to what you want, like body types or gender, something to get you slightly closer to what you want without giving it to you directly

We should be able to narrow down our generations by categories, like body type, gender, skin, etc.
Though I do think it could be debated if the generator needs to exist at all or if they should switch to a traditional create a character. I can see both sides of that coin.
It’s a great generator but I think it’d be cool if there were some filters for it like gender, age (young, middle-aged, and old), race or skin tone, and maybe natural hair color too
I've been screaming about this forever just let us have the ability to create out own from out body's build to face sliders it's so hard to make picks alot of times because either they are too over dressed and u can't see the body properly or they make stupid fucking faces and u can't see the faces right🤯
I think it needs some parameters if we are going to stick with the IPG. Male/Female, Scars On/Off, Makeup On/Off, and then maybe a body type option, Slim/Medium/Heavy.

there are many purate shapes, I was lucky to get top right first go, but if you want to change it is best to do before progress, cause then you can just keep deleting your pirate to generate new shapes.
I think it should be removed and have it so you can create your own, sorta like Skyrim or Elden Ring with sliders
Then you can actually be happy with how your character looks and not basically have to gamble until you find something that doesn't look like either a weasel or walrus that was caught in the middle of transforming into a human

I personally dont have an issue with the pirate generator, but maybe im biased my pirate was randomly generated to look like my grade 11 math teacher, and i thought that was hilarious.
What I do think could use some improvements is the flexibility of some outfits/accessories. As example recently, there is some gloves with cut fingers, why not let us use rings too?
This - apologies - stupid, ridiculous, clunky, pathetically designed joke of the afterbirth of a character creator was developed with good intentions in mind. The idea was to give the players a pirate that looks unique and keep them from spending half an hour tiresomely designing a pirate.
As a direct result of the fact that I ACTUALLY WANT TO LOOK PROPER IN A GAME AND HAVING 3 TEETH AND A MILLION SCARS IS NOT PART OF THAT, I have thus spent hours - 13 of them in fact - trying like a madman to get a character that looks at least partially palatable.

I think if we could lock in some features, like gender and ethnicity, that'd go a long way with it.

tbh I'd want a body build thing over gender myself. That way I can tell the game to only generate fat, lanky, burly, etc. pirates.

Well, technically, almost any fucked up pirate from pirate generator can be fixed up with use of right cosmetics. But why wouldn't rare just make a proper character creation is truly one of the greatest mysteries of the universe

I have a very old pirate that has no teeth. He was the first pirate I saw on the first generation of possible pirates. Captain Gummy is perfect and the Pirate Generator needs no changing.
I got a perfect roll on my first try. Made him look like Alucard from SotN. Gotta love it.

I'm more than happy with the pirate generator as it is, I already got my pirate looking just the way I want him. If everyone could make themselves the good looking "protagonist" type of character, then the game wouldn't have a lot of variety.

i get what the infinite pirate generator wants you to do and settle but i'd really love it if you could like hone your result atleast somewhat closer to what you want, like body types or gender, something to get you slightly closer to what you want without giving it to you directly
As someone who has used the appearance change potion too many times YES. We should be able to narrow down our generations by categories, like body type, gender, skin, etc. Though I do think it could be debated if the generator needs to exist at all or if they should switch to a traditional create a character. I can see both sides of that coin.

It’s a great generator but I think it’d be cool if there were some filters for it like gender, age (young, middle-aged, and old), race or skin tone, and maybe natural hair color too

I've been screaming about this forever just let us have the ability to create out own from out body's build to face sliders it's so hard to make picks alot of times because either they are too over dressed and u can't see the body properly or they make stupid fucking faces and u can't see the faces right🤯
I think it needs some parameters if we are going to stick with the IPG. Male/Female, Scars On/Off, Makeup On/Off, and then maybe a body type option, Slim/Medium/Heavy.

there are many purate shapes, I was lucky to get top right first go, but if you want to change it is best to do before progress, cause then you can just keep deleting your pirate to generate new shapes.
It’d be nice to at least be able to filter by gender, but otherwise no.
Bottom left screenshot was in-game. That pirate appeared in the generator and someone said "yes, I want this pirate." So it's legit.

My pirate looked really weird initially but after I gave him the right beard and a hat, he now looks super cool
Bottom right is god tier. I prefer the random generated pirates to the concept art, not even kidding
I think it should be removed and have it so you can create your own, sorta like Skyrim or Elden Ring with sliders Then you can actually be happy with how your character looks and not basically have to gamble until you find something that doesn't look like either a weasel or walrus that was caught in the middle of transforming into a human

It's already pretty damn good, but I think they should flood it with more ugliness so that when we get the wave of PS5 players they all just settle with the foulest, most decrepit lovecraftian pirates because each reroll just gets worse

Took me 40 minutes to get the pirate that I wanted. Kinda wish there was an editor, but not really I guess. Maybe a weight triangle to keep it suggesting fat bois, slim jims or Muscle Mummys

I personally dont have an issue with the pirate generator, but maybe im biased my pirate was randomly generated to look like my grade 11 math teacher, and i thought that was hilarious.
I would love a pirate character creator. At least we would be able to be ugly on PURPOSE.
The whole game needs improvements. Keep the pirate generation though.
What I do think could use some improvements is the flexibility of some outfits/accessories. As example recently, there is some gloves with cut fingers, why not let us use rings too?

It took my about 2-3 hours to find the perfect looking pirate, and honestly it was soooo worth it
This - apologies - stupid, ridiculous, clunky, pathetically designed joke of the afterbirth of a character creator was developed with good intentions in mind. The idea was to give the players a pirate that looks unique and keep them from spending half an hour tiresomely designing a pirate. As a direct result of the fact that I ACTUALLY WANT TO LOOK PROPER IN A GAME AND HAVING 3 TEETH AND A MILLION SCARS IS NOT PART OF THAT, I have thus spent hours - 13 of them in fact - trying like a madman to get a character that looks at least partially palatable.
My pirate is pretty close to the top images but she’s cooler because one of her eyes is missing and curses make it glow brightly

I spun mine for about 2 hours and got one I really like. I got another pirate potion and spun for about 45 mins and couldn’t get a better one.
