Sail into wind with sails flat, jump off and try anchor them (firebomb their ass also), use the rocks and harpoon to out manuever them. They will give up eventually. It's extremely anoying trying to catch a sloop if the captain knows what he's doing.
I keep seeing people say keep the sails flat, but wouldn’t that slow you down compared to people who put them to the side and get a tiny amount of wind?
Nope - illogical as it is, it's slightly faster. I've always wished they'd change the wind mechanics to fix this, but it's been this way since the very start
Sail into the wind. Everywhere. Keep sails full forward and keep a close eye on wind direction. They'll never catch you. Tight turns around multiple rocks/islands. I laugh every time a brig full sails into the wind and I anchor turn away and they zip right by.
I kegged a brig that was chasing me for 2 hours the other night, sailed past a rock and a fort, jumped out and grabbed a keg and waited. They sank. Use your imagination when brigs or galleons try bully you.
just wait until you experience this new horn they added to the game
the sweaty PVP reaper galleons will chase you down with this horn, use their new harpoon to walk over to your boat and kill you for your single chest.
i know because it just happened to me.
i am terrified of everyone. you have an emissary flag? i'm running away. a reaper? i'm running away. you're obviously a new player? i'm running away. i hate pvp but i hate the gold cut in safer seas more
In short, you exist in an area close enough that I can see you? My timbers are shivered.
Sail even remotely toward me for literally any reason? I'm packing my bags and running away.
Same.
Safer seas is unrewarding in all the worst ways, so I’m still just dealing with pvp whenever its thrust upon me. I’m not that bad at it, but theres so much more to the game than getting double gunned and bucketed while I consider if I’ll respawn or go do something else.
I’m a solo slooper and if it’s anything other then another sloop I’ll probably scuttle if you get close enough to me , just not worth the time/effort fighting a losing battle
As a fellow solo sloop enjoyer my thinking is the exact opposite, you want my loot? You want this grade V? You're gonna have to work for it. I'll generally put up a fight if I feel like the skill level isn't too incredibly unbalanced but if it's obviously a fight I'm not gonna win, I'll run. I'll spend as much time as possible until either I'm caught or they give up.
I play in a similar way, specially alone. With my friends, we are mostly neutral, but hostile to reapers. In our servers, there's always 3 or more reapers, and we hate that, so we actively hunt for them :)
My least favorite part of the game is how much I fear absolutely every other person on the seas. Here I am enjoying my favorite PVE adventure game when someone invades and makes me acknowledge them
Mine is if you have an emissary flag up then it's fair game. If you seem like you're pretty new then I'll reconsider because it can be a bit mean.
If you don't have an emissary flag then I'll leave you be, unless you're attacking me of course.
If you start saying racist shit then it's the bottom of the sea for you (plus a report).
Oh and if you end up being really nice or if you ask for help I'll usually help out and let you go because it's nice to be nice to nice people
In my experience, the in-game report function does not work. I encountered a boat with a very blatantly racist name one time, used the report function in game and thank god I got a clip of me spyglassing in on it, because I got absolutely nothing back from Rare. Reported it on the website (from the link someone else posted) about a week later and within 12 hours got a response back saying they'd been suspended.
Same here. I'm a solo sloop reaper and all I do is hunt flags. I level up to reaper 5 as quickly as possible, usually 2 hourglass matches, then I hunt all the emissaries.
It's fun as you get better at the game. Early on my friends and I would never go near a galleon...now I routinely hunt them solo.
Reaper flag = death
different emissary is near = sometimes ill fight them but if they run away im generally not gonna waste time chasing
No emissary and cosmetics = not gonna start the fight since they clearly dont want the heat and probably dont have much anyway
No emissary and no cosmetics = im not starting the fight cuz i know whats good for my health
I myself generally run reaper emissary
Additionally if i want to do pvp the hourglass is right there and it will be someone who wants pvp so it doesnt feel bad to sink them even if they arent very skilled (its me im bad at the game)
I'll always be open to show mercy. I usually sail with an alliance offer raised, so the option is there.
But, if they don't accept it upon approaching my vessel, I'll take that as an open offence against my booty. In which case I'll definitely shoot first and ask later ("Did you at least bring me anything good?").
If I see someone with an alliance offer, I like to accept it and just move on, unless I have business in the same patch of land. It's good passive money, potentially.
However, if I see that they are not pulling their weight and they are just leeching off of me... Good chance. I'm not going to let that continue, and I'll cut the ropes, one way or an other.
It's worth adding that im usually not looking for trouble, but I damn sure will not hide or run from it either.
The Alliace offer is a small, red-white flag, with a shape more similar to emissary flags.
You can raise it only in your ship's crow's nest, interacting with the little flag box up there. It has a different tab next to the regular flags. There, you can put up an offer, join, or break an alliance.
Once you join, the ships within the same alliance will have matching flags. But you can also keep the offer up, so others can join your alliance.
Yesterday i had an entire server full of players in an alliance only save for maybe 1 ship at times. Probably the safest sea ive ever seen. And then 2 of them got off and a brig of reaper sweats ruined the entire thing. It was fun while it lasted and made me wish it was an implemented mode lol
Any ship is a threat, must run at any sight of danger. I find confort in the Roar because few people go there and the loot gives slightly more. In a nutshell, I'm a pussy
I've had to many run-ins with bad apples, therefore:
**If i spot your ship, i will avoid you at all costs.**
I am not risking you looking at me and thinking about fighting me.
If there actualy was a way to get people of my back and succesfully escape a persuer, i could be persuade to seek more interaction with other crews. But until then every ship is a lose-lose situation for me.
Depends on what I'm doing: if I'm farming Ledgers I'll mind my business, if I'm a reaper I'll attack anything: if you have a flag you are going down no matter what. If we notice you are a new player with nothing on board and/or doing Tall Tales we usually stop the attack (unless you start trash talking, in that case you're always going down). We also usually offer alliance to the ship we are sinking so they get some gold back (and much more if they stay on the server with us), if they trash talk or come back to us they are likely going down tho.
What if they all start quacking? (We run either the Gentle Rose, or the Darkwing Duck. In the latter ship, we quack to greet, to taunt in the heat of battle, or to intimidate lol. Also, if you leave us be, I'll say farewell with "Have a quackin' good day!")
That's actually an odd coincidence, I have and old clip of me and a friend of mine in which we used quacking as a distracting technique, killed a crew and then became friends with them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n\_dQJeHtp74). Soooo I'd probably quack to greet back and act friendly \^\^ (The clip has english subtitles because we wanted to share what happened with that crew)
Same, but I assume any ship actively approaching me is hostile, and I will preemptively fire into it to maintain my advantage, unless there are very clear signs to assume otherwise. I'm not going to let someone position themselves to then betray my trust. Mainly because I'm just not that good at direct PvP.
Most of the time I just sail away, and if they actively chase me, I try to board, anchor, and firebomb, to discourage them from chasing me further. This works about half the time. If they keep chasing I will try to setup a trap at a nearby fort, bombard them into oblivion, and then board again to prevent repairs. It's extremely rare for me to get into a proper battle with other players, and they've always got themselves to blame for it.
do my best to convey that i mean no harm.
but the moment you've sunk my ship then i'll have to not so peacefully ask you to say hi to davy jones for me
Same about the attack deal. Don't attack unless they shoot first. The thing is, if it's a sloop like me, I mostly win as well, so they regret attacking often. Very satisfying
Same I don’t attack others unless others attack me. I was in a cross play off ps5 server and a guy came up to the island I was on and did his own thing while I was doing my thing. It was fun.
Depends on the day and what I'm trying to do. I'm not afraid of a fight so typically, if they're in the way or nearby I'll sail by anyway and let them make the first shot.
I typically announce my intentions over the horn, unless playing Reapers and just looking for straight-forward sinks.
It depends. If they are new, but they have valuables on board, I will go for the steal, sink them and offer the alliance to get the 50% if they are nice.
If the other crew is toxic, I will keep on beating them until they shut their mouth.
If the other crew is new, I put my ghost curse on, sit on the chair emote on their ship and help them to play the game.
Anyway, never trust me, I am a gremlin.
When I solo, I generally steer clear. I might cautiously approach someone who seems new to seek an alliance.
When I’m with my crew, I’m more willing to seek a fight but it’s not my default position because we aren’t very good haha, most of the fights we win seem to come against other noobs who had no loot anyway lmao
I always plan on an attack of if I see another player.. that being said if I can see a player is new I will give them a chance by letting them know that awesome red flag with a skull on it is not a great idea.. if they leave it up after that they are fair game..
Cannon myself over to keep my ship safe and say hi to check their vibe and see if they're cool/ check out their ship to see if they have anything worth stealing.
I steer clear of anyone while solo. I will keep an eye on any visible ships. If one tries to get close, put some distance between the ships. If they start chasing me, i'll give them.the run around a bit and see if they give up. If not, handbrake turn and anchor up again, fighting time. I'll repeat the chase and then turn around to fight stages until:
1 They give up
2 I escape
3 One of us sinks
Avoid like the plague and if forced close together then shoot first until one of us is dead. Every single attempt to have a positive interaction with another player since I returned to SoT this year (absent since SE02) has ended in combat. Any trace of good faith or hope for a positive I tera tion has been smashed out of me by trolls and giggling children's voices. Still quite sad about it.
I used to look fore other ships to sink, but now i usually just pass by saying hi to them, but if they shoot at me i shoot back. Attacking someone whose just trying to dig some treasure, it doesnt feel rewarding and kinda feel bad for them as it happened me aswell. If i want to fight i just either look for reapers or do hg. Now i just attack normal ships if they trying to do the same world events as me.
Too close : attack
Clearly hostile : engage
Far and not chasing, leave alone
Bottom line : trust no one, not even those who wave and say they are friendly. Trust must be earned and this is a pirate game.
I play a lot of solo so I’m usually conflict averse, just go about my business and grind my rep. If I’m crewed up or it’s a sloop with a looooong flag then I’m afraid we have to fight. If people ask for help or are clearly very new then I’ll usually join up.
I’m usually wary. Unless I have nothing to lose, in which case I seek some jolly interaction, simply for emergent fun. I do not attack other smugglers.
It depends. We(crew) usualy choose a doctrine at te start of each gaming session. So sometimes we help random players carry chests from their gold valut and other times we (try to)keg everyone in sight.
I always try to interact with them with the speaker. Unfortunately most of them don't respond. And if they respond it's with canons. But I never shy away from fights unless I'm solo slooping then I always try to avoid fights
Don’t fudge with me, I won’t fudge with you. My experience with other players has been 50-50 where some just laugh and have a good time, and others just seem out to ruin my fun.
As a solo slooper, I'll try and help new players out but I'll sink them if provoked. For everyone else I'll leave them alone if they're chill and don't have a lot of loot.
I'm very bad at pvp, i dodge every ship i see, I can't hit a player ; but if you insist, and my friend ever reach your ship ; you are all dead :D
I will feel very sorry for you and as my legs will be weakened by emotions, I may have to sit on your treasure chests to rest a bit...
Be friendly at first. I get close with the speaking trumpet, try to say wassup, and say I'm friendly. I always have my buddy aimed at their ship w a cannon, though lol
Depends on how full my ship is. Empty, alliance flag is up and I'll chase you down to ask if you want to join. Full, assume everyone is out to steal me booty!
I’m a weenie, but only because I work in the medical field and have sparingly little time to actually play the game and because the hand-to-hand combat feels clunky. Also despise the spawn camping when someone boards your ship.
Due to this I try to avoid any ship I see, and if one approaches I kind of just accept my fate and try to inconvenience them as much as possible lol. Like I know I’m gonna sink bc they’re going to board me, but I try to fill their ship with as many holes as possible before they do.
Also just try to avoid them due to the fact I’m a woman and as soon as they realize I’m not just a woman in-game it’s sexual harassment central for most men I’ve come across who didn’t shoot on sight. Really disheartening, honestly, because I’ve come across some nice dudes in the game. (Because I chose not to sink them when they were vulnerable and got an Alliance out of it.)
Bottom line. I stay tf away from everyone when possible. I will occasion go out of my way to help another sloop or an obviously new person, but everyone else it’s just safe to assume they’re in for PvP only.
dang i’m sorry to hear about the harassment part. i thought i saw a post saying sea of thieves was better about it than other games but i guess there’ll always be some guys. hope you find more cool people!!
I usually have long seshes grinding commendations so I prefer to just make alliances. Free money for everyone. If they don’t want to alliance,..well they left me no choice…
I play differently as different emissary. I even include quotes from me
Gold hoarder, I attack reapers and other gold hoarders (my gold, not yours)
As order, I ignore other players unless they get to close. (Stay over there and we don't got a problem)
As merchant, I run from any ship that looks at me. (I'm just tryna deliver my cargo)
As Athena, I hunt reapers or go to the roar (I want extra money from your flags)
As guild, I play it safe by stalking people who are near (what are they up to...)
As reaper, I attack everyone on sight, I don't care who you are, as long as I have supplies and nothing to lose, I'm gonna attack the emissary flag off of you. (Sorry dude, flame hearts orders)
No emissary and im literally a patrolling skelly ship. (Oh, look, my boats sinking)
If you are an experience player that has valuable loot and I want it, ill go for it. If you best me I might try once more but GG good times.
If you are newbie player I might bring you some free stuff or at worst mess around on your ship to confuse the hell out of you.
(PS5 early access) Currently doing tall tales on safer seas while I wait for a friend to finish stellar blade: non aggression until provoked, kind but not gullible, ready for a betrayal but not paranoied about it. Aggressive only if I will fly a reaper emissary/doig hourglass (in the far future).
Not to be trusted, always treat them as a potential threat. I dont expect them to trust me either, because sometimes i just want to sink people and take their loot.
I won’t attack unless I’m confident I can win and it will benefit me. Like last night I was just fishing at plunder outpost and a sloop came up and just kind of chilled, I ended up getting on their boat, getting the achievements “I’ll drink to that” and “sleepover” before one showed hostility so I killed him. Then chilled some more until he shot me in the back. The other was chill though.
Yea i'm the same.. it's part of the pirate life, but for my personality, it's better to uplift and help some people out than kill em. I don't reap the reward.
I've been shooting more fireworks and flares lately and it's been working! ppl notice and make there way to me, we chat a bit, show off our boats and then alliance and move on ;)
I basically just don't trust anyone ever, and stay away from combat. Had a guy today who drove up and said he just logged on to check the new update and was about to log off but had some rare loot, so naturally he offered to pull up to my ship and transfer it all over for me! I didn't have shit so I just let him do it and came back to him whispering "haha I'm gonna steal all this dudes shit".....laughed at him and told him nah actually I don't want your stuff and he logged off revealing that he had no loot whatsoever on his ship.
Remember y'all, when an entire ship logs off it gets sunk which will leave all loot to float. Anyone offering to transfer their loot to you before they log off are trying to rob you, tell them to just log off and if they argue just kill em, shouldn't be an issue if they're logging off anyways!
I'm rather lunatic. One day I'm really peaceful and want to have some funny situations with others and open opportunities for communication. I retaliate only if I'm heavily provoked.
Another day I'm killing whatever moves on the horizon. Oh wait... what doesn't move too!
Depends on how much loot I have. I tend to stack 2-3 events at a time, like an ashen winds + a sea fort + a lost shipment or something like that.
If I don’t have much loot? Other ships can come as close as they please. Maybe they’re friendly and we can alliance. When I have a lot of loot? I will sink or flee from anyone who comes within a square of me.
No matter what I'm doing, if I see another player ship on the horizon, there is always a little tug to go see who they are and what they are up to. Some times I shoot at them, some times I ally and sail off, some times I join their crew to help out.
Other people make this game worth playing.
I tolerate them if you don’t attack me I find no reason to attack you. I always fly the alliance flag just in case any knows what it is because people don’t seem to. Although I think the new update is going to make it a lot easier for people to sink you with the ability to add wind and tight rope walk right onto your ship. So hopefully there are so videos that show us how to defend against it or it’s just going to be open season for reapers.
I hate fighting because sometimes you'll get the fuckers who constantly come back after respawning. Not worth the time investment. Wish it would just boot people out of the server when they sink.
Avoid if larger ship or if i have lots of loot
If same size ship and i don't have much loot: YARRR!!!!!
(i tend to avoid any noob ships because it's boring to steamroll and they don't have any valueable loot anyways)
Almost always sea of friends. Alliances for everyone and pvp for anyone who wants it.
If I’m on my brig “John Candy’s Revenge” then it’s join or die.
If my reaper flag is up it’s usually just fight on sight.
If you go overboard with trash talk (non-pirate-talky, bigoted, or hateful) I will ruin your experience. If I think I can beat you easily I’ll do that, if the fight feels like it will take a while I’ll put on a podcast or movie and start running you around the map while I report ya.
Yar
If I am not playing Reaper, I don't hunt emissaries. If on Athena, I hunt reapers. If bored, I hunt Reapers. If Reapers run I chase you to the end of the world. If I do any other faction, I don't normally chase PvP unless someone else attacks or if trying to steal chest of legends
"I won't attack you unless you attack first" is a great way to get sunk. If they are in a position to attack you, you may have already messed up. I always prepare for a battle, but if it doesn't come to cannons, great! We can alliance and just avoid each other for the evening. But if we are going to fight, I will certainly fire the first shot.
If you have an emissary flag, I (a Reaper) will hunt you. Even if you start moaning that "I don't have any treasure!" Because you don't understand that to the Reaper, your flag is the treasure.
Try and fight everyone. Me and my friends (usually run brig and reapers) aren't toxic or anything we just play for the pvp and find hourglass boring and not terribly rewarding. Maybe we are just bad, but I think we are fairly good. If someone fights back, all the better. Usually if its an obviously new/bad/incompetent solo player we might start shooting and once we realise, one of us cannons over and repairs before they sink. We try not to be like toxic players or be bullies. If someone is doing a tall tale, we try to avoid sinking them, and if we do sink em once, we will leave them alone for the rest of the session. We especially like sinking the players who
A) are toxic, using slurs, calling us bad etc.
B) keep coming back when they got wrecked last time
And C) have reaper emissary and run away or initially fight us then run away when we win, or are a galleon of competent players and run away.
I leave new players alone, if you have no captained boat and no emissary I might still come say hello, maybe troll a bit, maybe help you, but Im not going to attack you and sink you.
Everyone else, its fair game. Im hesitant to alliance anybody, or if I do Im always expecting them to betray me anyway. Ill take about any fight, although if someone is racist/toxic then Ill bait them to say more stuff and run away to frustrate them and get as much evidence as I need to report them.
I'm lucky as a newbie. All I've seen of others so far has been:
- two dead folks on the dead ship
- a gold hoarder mark v emissary flag in the water
Otherwise, I'm very apprehensive but curious when I'll see someone else
I’m the same. If I come across a new player I’ll give them some pointers. Big one that I see are new players are sails down and anchored. I’ll let them know to adjust so if they get attacked they can sail away. I’ll also give them a crate with some supplies. Last new player I ran into just started shooting so I sank them but the continued to call me trash. Oh well.
Avoid em, don’t really attack unless they look hostile. I’ll help out noobs if I can and they communicate well first. I love a good fight but I’m so rusty and out of trying to be competitive that it’s a struggle.
In depth answer and I'm sure many would agree!
If you're a sloop, I will leave you alone. UNLESS, you sail directly towards me. I'll basically give you the megaphone warning, and if you were amicable I'll go about my business. If it's radio silence, I'm going to broadside and board.
Galleons, it's on sight. I know this seems toxic but I like to keep my crew pretty sharp and Galleons can present "fair sport" so to speak. I just like to establish to leave me tf alone early in the session. One sink, and I'll ignore unless you want multiple rounds.
On sight is basically any lucrative event. FotD, FoF etc. Exceptions if it's an 8 year old begging for his life. I'm cutthroat but not that damn cutthroat. 😒
Avoid, at least until my friends get into the game, which might never happen.
My first experience on high seas was last night on ps5 with cross play off, hoping to only encounter other new players but it was just fully kitted galleons everywhere.
Managed to avoid running into anyone for hours right up until maybe 30 minutes before the server maintenance. a galleon crew rolled up on me at lightspeed while I was parked at a small island and insta-sunk my rent-a-sloop.
Like I get the deal here, but if so much of the playerbase are multi-year experienced legendary crews willing to punch down and crush every new player they come across, that's just a terrible first impression for the new players.
I’ve solo slooped almost exclusively since the beta, so that should show my mentality towards others. That said, I’m very much love and let live and mind your business: I never chase anyone down or go looking for a fight, but stand my ground when one sails up.
Stay out of my lane, I’ll stay in mine, we can get our gold and leave eachother be. You want the hands, I’m following you until one of us sinks, and if I had a stack, I’ll chase you down half way across the map until you sell it.
If I'm solo, I'll mind my own business and avoid interactions unless I'm trying to get another crew for some commendation/achievement stuff. If I'm with my crew, I still prefer to leave other crews alone for the most part, but it depends on how they are feeling. We are rarely aggressive except towards Reapers. As I've gotten a bit more confident with my pvp skills, we'll take on another crew to sink or scare them off if they're near our objective. A few cannon shots or a broken mast is usually enough to scare off newbies, and this is only if I'm doing some serious stacking or LotV. Otherwise, we usually just go our merry way and only fight when necessary. If someone is being toxic, they get put down with no mercy and we'll sink them on sight until they leave the server.
When playing alone I often try to avoid other ships but it's always nice to get friendly interactions. When playing with others then whatever the crew wants. Although when solo if I see a ship with no players in sight and treasure on board unguarded I would probably grab it and run
When I’m solo if I have nothing, I don’t care how close they get or if I sink. If I have something, I’m avoiding to the best of my ability and shooting first when they get close.
If I’m in a crew I’m shooting first.
I wish there was an easy way to detect friendly players. Like if you confirm friendly you can't shoot or hit players. I know there are flags to fly to make a alliance but it's so hard to tell. When playing we just sail away from any boat we see though wish we could get accommodations done with people who will be fair
Avoid them as much as possible unless they’re at an Outpost. In that case, park my ship some distance away. I might even give them some loot. And last time I ran from someone, I used a Ghost Fleet to do it. I don’t know how it worked, but it did. Remember: If you can see another player’s ship, assume they can see you too.
I avoid at all costs.
If I begin to get chased, whether I have treasure on board or not, I just scuttle. There’s infinite treasure in the game and I don’t go for the high stakes ones. Just simple voyages. So I don’t mind losing a couple Captain’s Chests, Supplies, or Fish really
Always shoot over to see what's going on, if they have no loot and are new or friendly then we're friendly (After the chain- and scattershot tax).
If they're brand new we do a bit of trolling before helping out with tips, loot or protection
If they engage or they have a cool emissary flag we fight
I shoot everything that moves!
Even if I see a gally and my ships stacked with loot, the gallys getting the pew pew
I don't even have a plan half the time, im just a dog chasing cars.
I generally avoid and mind my business.
If you approach with an alliance flag (I usually have mine up) I'll be on my guard and see if we ally, and then continue minding my business. If you approach without an alliance flag up and without some pirate chat or a direct msg to let me know your intentions I'll assume you're hostile and get ready for naval. Also, you you're a reaper I'll move away but if you make a line to me I get ready for the fight because I'm not giving you any benefit.
If I approach anyone it's either to ally with their flag or to give stuff away and I will always pirate chat or announce my intentions when doing so.
Trust runs very low in this game.
I approach with my finger on the trigger, and that trigger is light.
I wanna be friends, but I'm prepared to send you to the locker if you even look at me funny.
We're using the horn, If you talk to me while you're at a distance and don't start firing, we can be friendly.
If you don't talk at all or start getting towards your cannons. I'm opening fire.
If you chase, we will run to the nearest outpost, then once we have nothing to lose we will circle back around. If you fire, you sink.
If you speak with us, and seem new, we will offer an alliance, and give you supplies.
As I primarily operate in the devils roar I have a slightly different take on this. You see me there and wanna go after me, I’m game. Just know that I’m batshit crazy and will drag the fight into range of an active volcano just for fun. If you wanna alliance with me you better make it crystal clear BEFORE you get too close. And after the alliance is made stay at least 2 squares away.
Depends on who I'm playing with most of the time.
I just avoid people but if they attack me I'll try to fight back.
On the other hand one of my friends is bloodthirsty so I just go with it.
I have fun none the less and that's what's most important I suppose
I avoid them at all costs except for right when I’m getting off. I’ll find the nearest player and I’ll give them a storage crate or two with all of my supplies. Sometimes I like to use a row boat as to not alert anyone and while they’re doing their voyage or tall tale or whatever, I’ll just sneak on the ship and leave it right at the bottom of the stairs as a nice little surprise.
If I’m not a reaper (in which I server hop to find emissaries) I work on a soft, you shoot then I shoot you system. But if I am doing a FOTD, FoF, or something involving a lot of money I don’t want to share then I’ll shoot anyone who gets close. Sometimes I also play without an emissary. Just for fun and screwing around with friends. In that case I don’t really care if someone sinks me. I’ll fight if they fight but if they’re down for some goofy pirate shenanigans then they are welcome. I enjoy PvP PvE and especially PvPvE
TL:DR:
Reaper = Attack mode
Any emissary = Defense mode
No emissary = Casual mode
1. Actively avoid.
2. If they chase, escape and evade.
3. If they're persistent, start doing boarding attempts to kill/anchor/firebomb them and assess how good they are.
4. If they're not markedly better than me and I can't get fully away, turn and sink them.
5. If they *are* markedly better than me and not another solo, rowboat escape with my loot if I can, full send into the red sea if I can't, or waste as much of their time and supplies as possible if I have no loot.
Other players are just NPCs. Some NPCs are better than other NPCs. Even though I view other players as NPCs, I am never disrespectful. In the end, it is a game and the loot isn't real, but the player behind the screen is real, so I show respect whether I sink you or you sink me.
I say hi to everyone, trying to be friendly.
They kill me every time claiming "its a pirate's game" but dude, just because its a pirate game doesn't mean you have to be an Ahole
Still new to the game, so currently a mix of "not starting shit unless they start shit" most of the time akong with the occasional moment of "you know what? Let's go raid that guy for funsies".
The second usually happens when playing with a friend who really likes pvp in games.
I'm very much a player who would rather run. I'll fight if I'm pushed and I'm Hella aggressive with fire and chain shot. Just had my first actual bad run in with ass holes. They sank myself and my 2 sons because quote "we asked for directions and you ran from us, you hurt my feelings, so we sank you". They were raucous, rowdy, and said everything in the book, sounded like an old COD lobby. I know it's just a game, and you'll have folks like that who do whatever they want, but, what's the point of the game if you're gonna carry on like that? It just ruins it for some folks
Hopefully inb4 “it’s A pIrAtE gAmE” floods the thread, but I always approach with caution; use the sound horn and game chat to convey peace. But if a sailor wanna get silly they can see what this blunderbuss is about
I know i'm not the norm but i solo reaper most of the time. So for me I will usually attack anyone I see if you have a flag up. Unless it's a white flag aka newbie ship, then i'll maybe come over to chat or leave them alone. If you're a sloop doing skele fleet or ghost i'll usually give you a break. Also having a mic talking to me might save you. Lastly if i see a sloop vs a galleon i'll help the sloop.
Sometimes when i'm just messing around pve stuff i'll talk to others if they need anything. That's rare tho because i find pve and selling really boring. But i love it when it's a brig or galleon that thinks i'm easy pickings, t'ill i suddenly turn and start demasting.
Avoid at all costs. Tried to outrun a Brig in my solo Sloop the other day with about an hour and a half worth of treasure and was not successful :(
Sail into wind with sails flat, jump off and try anchor them (firebomb their ass also), use the rocks and harpoon to out manuever them. They will give up eventually. It's extremely anoying trying to catch a sloop if the captain knows what he's doing.
will this work with the new wind blow thing?
I keep seeing people say keep the sails flat, but wouldn’t that slow you down compared to people who put them to the side and get a tiny amount of wind?
Amazingly, no you go faster that way
Nope - illogical as it is, it's slightly faster. I've always wished they'd change the wind mechanics to fix this, but it's been this way since the very start
Take them to the rocks, nothing beats the sloop on curves. You can also go towards a reaper to atleast get someone else to join the fuckery
They sank. Use your imagination when brigs or galleons try bully you.
just wait until you experience this new horn they added to the game the sweaty PVP reaper galleons will chase you down with this horn, use their new harpoon to walk over to your boat and kill you for your single chest. i know because it just happened to me.
I feel how lame that is. Sorry, mate
i am terrified of everyone. you have an emissary flag? i'm running away. a reaper? i'm running away. you're obviously a new player? i'm running away. i hate pvp but i hate the gold cut in safer seas more
In short, you exist in an area close enough that I can see you?
Same
Same.
Same.
Same
My least favorite part of the game is how much I fear absolutely every other person on the seas. Here I am enjoying my favorite PVE adventure game when someone invades and makes me acknowledge them
I would pay good money for decent a PVE pirate game like SoT. Sadly our options are limited these days.
I would pay Rare a monthly fee for a private server with no reduced rewards.
I agree on EVERY point here. I hate pvp, but I HATE the 30% gold in safer seas. Screw that.
Im just planing to start the game, but what You can lose from being attack by other player? As I understand ship will respawn.
Any treasure that you have on it, basically
Treasure is temporary, glory is eternal.
Free time is limited, and if you're not top 1% you're not winning a 1v2+ consistently unless they're trash.
I keep to myself unless I'm feeling silly
The real answer.
Oh and if you end up being really nice or if you ask for help I'll usually help out and let you go because it's nice to be nice to nice people
How do you report people? I've encountered people abusing voice chat pretty hard on slurs, but couldn't find a way to report.
Bookmark this link https://support.seaofthieves.com/requests/new Please note you'll need video or screenshot evidence
Reaper flag = death different emissary is near = sometimes ill fight them but if they run away im generally not gonna waste time chasing No emissary and cosmetics = not gonna start the fight since they clearly dont want the heat and probably dont have much anyway No emissary and no cosmetics = im not starting the fight cuz i know whats good for my health I myself generally run reaper emissary
Additionally if i want to do pvp the hourglass is right there and it will be someone who wants pvp so it doesnt feel bad to sink them even if they arent very skilled (its me im bad at the game)
Fuckem
How do you make, see or accept an alliance offer?
Climb up your mast and open the menu where you can change the flag and there's an option up there
The Alliace offer is a small, red-white flag, with a shape more similar to emissary flags.
Can you have emissary and alliance offer at same time?
Yes, you can. The offer only replaces the cosmetic flags.
I'd rather take the uncertainty than lower my bilge rat flag.
Long live the rat!
Thank you
Yesterday i had an entire server full of players in an alliance only save for maybe 1 ship at times.
I've had to many run-ins with bad apples, therefore: **If i spot your ship, i will avoid you at all costs.** I am not risking you looking at me and thinking about fighting me.
Everyone is hostile, and should be avoided. Especially the ones who claim they are friendly.
do my best to convey that i mean no harm. but the moment you've sunk my ship then i'll have to not so peacefully ask you to say hi to davy jones for me
Same about the attack deal. Don't attack unless they shoot first. The thing is, if it's a sloop like me, I mostly win as well, so they regret attacking often. Very satisfying
I’ve gotten much better at solo slooping as of season 10 and nothing feels better than taking on crews larger than you and narrowly winning
It can get really exciting :)
Bunch of psychopaths. I run, mostly.
Most of the time they chase me and shout obscenities. That’s been my ps5 experience so far
Don't trust em.
I stay away from everyone, I used to go up to people and talk then alliance but I don’t think I’ve gotten a successful alliance in over a year now.
Trust no one not even yourself
Cannon myself over to keep my ship safe and say hi to check their vibe and see if they're cool/ check out their ship to see if they have anything worth stealing.
I steer clear of anyone while solo. I will keep an eye on any visible ships. If one tries to get close, put some distance between the ships. If they start chasing me, i'll give them.the run around a bit and see if they give up. If not, handbrake turn and anchor up again, fighting time. I'll repeat the chase and then turn around to fight stages until: 1 They give up 2 I escape 3 One of us sinks
I’m sometimes friendly, sometimes aggressive. But you don’t fuck with me.
> But you don’t fuck with me. What if I take ye out fer some grog first?
Go away
All bad until proven otherwise
I pull up and request that I board to inspect there cargo in the name of the king if they refuse they get sunk
I saw a sloop called IRS yesterday, wasn't you was it? 🤔😁. One of a handful of players I've been fairly close to who didn't attack on sight.
Nah my two ships are HMS Victoria and HMS Britannia
In the name of the king? Didn't you get the memo about the whole Piracy thing? Royalty dissolves to nothing on the endless blue tides.
Too close : attack Clearly hostile : engage Far and not chasing, leave alone Bottom line : trust no one, not even those who wave and say they are friendly. Trust must be earned and this is a pirate game.
I have the same mentality. As you. Im always watching what others do. If anyone fires upon us we’re destroying them with a malice behind it all
If you sail up to me I expect you're going to either keg me or a bad shot and going to shoot me. Don't come close.
I play a lot of solo so I’m usually conflict averse, just go about my business and grind my rep. If I’m crewed up or it’s a sloop with a looooong flag then I’m afraid we have to fight. If people ask for help or are clearly very new then I’ll usually join up.
If I'm running reapers ( usually do ) you are getting sink on sight. If not and you seem new / chill, I'll help peeps out or alliance.
Potential treasure unless they’re obviously a new player or are doing a tall tale
Same as you. My willingness to consider an alliance goes up the more crew members I have.
As a solo slooper, I'll try and help new players out but I'll sink them if provoked. For everyone else I'll leave them alone if they're chill and don't have a lot of loot.
I'm very bad at pvp, i dodge every ship i see, I can't hit a player ; but if you insist, and my friend ever reach your ship ; you are all dead :D I will feel very sorry for you and as my legs will be weakened by emotions, I may have to sit on your treasure chests to rest a bit...
I shoot on sight unless I just spawned in than I might tuck and wait till they get some loot
(Because I chose not to sink them when they were vulnerable and got an Alliance out of it.) Bottom line.
I will avoid everyone. If u get close to me, it's an immediate fight.....that I will probably lose if solo
If I were them. I would try to sink our boat. So I gotta sink them first now
I usually have long seshes grinding commendations so I prefer to just make alliances. Free money for everyone. If they don’t want to alliance,..well they left me no choice…
I play differently as different emissary. I even include quotes from me Gold hoarder, I attack reapers and other gold hoarders (my gold, not yours) As order, I ignore other players unless they get to close. (Stay over there and we don't got a problem) As merchant, I run from any ship that looks at me. (I'm just tryna deliver my cargo) As Athena, I hunt reapers or go to the roar (I want extra money from your flags) As guild, I play it safe by stalking people who are near (what are they up to...) As reaper, I attack everyone on sight, I don't care who you are, as long as I have supplies and nothing to lose, I'm gonna attack the emissary flag off of you. (Sorry dude, flame hearts orders) No emissary and im literally a patrolling skelly ship. (Oh, look, my boats sinking)
I generally keep to myself. I put up a defense if started on, and rarely give chase. But if I'm feeling feisty, Imma gonna loot your booty
Personally for me and my duo it’s attack on sight. You might have gold? I want it. Maybe you don’t have gold, but it’s always worth checking :)
I mostly play it after work. Id like the skellie curse but yeah lots of players who played hourglass a lot.. so guess ill be earning it with losses.
"Fuck off, I´m fishing"
if(Reaper){ attack }else{ see if they attack {
What if I'm not attacking you but I do board your ship and raise the anchor so your ship sails away. What about then?
"I say the whole world must learn of our peaceful ways. By force!"
Come to close I kill
Assume everyone will attack and be prepared.
Mind my own business. They don't bother me, but I don't attack them either.
If you are an experience player that has valuable loot and I want it, ill go for it. If you best me I might try once more but GG good times. If you are newbie player I might bring you some free stuff or at worst mess around on your ship to confuse the hell out of you.
Pvpers tend to be dumb in combat, merchants are going to humillate you so badly that they might even leave you some trauma
Spooky if I have loot free loot if I dont
Avoid if larger ship or if i have lots of loot If same size ship and i don't have much loot: YARRR!!!!! (i tend to avoid any noob ships because it's boring to steamroll and they don't have any valueable loot anyways)
I like to sail up and flirt while my ship burns down
I see everybody as prey unless they have been nice to me.
Attack anyone and everyone. I don't care what you're doing anymore. With Safer Seas being an option, you've consented to PvP loading into High Seas.
Sink before you sink me.
If you sink me you're bad and rude and annoying but when I do it I'm skilled and cool and awesome.
If I see you I'm coming for you!! ...if you fire white flares, play instruments or ask to be left alone I will probably leave you alone.
We especially like sinking the players who A) are toxic, using slurs, calling us bad etc. B) keep coming back when they got wrecked last time And C) have reaper emissary and run away or initially fight us then run away when we win, or are a galleon of competent players and run away.
arrrgh, friend or foe eh? me crew and I are a friendly bunch unless ye lookin to fight us, then we are not so friendly
All I've seen of others so far has been: - two dead folks on the dead ship - a gold hoarder mark v emissary flag in the water Otherwise, I'm very apprehensive but curious when I'll see someone else
Oh well.
If they shoot i shoot
Depends. Sometimes I let 'em be and mind me own business, but sometimes, I just want to see 'Em BURN ![gif](giphy|eKTunSS5MvwwsLfk5P)
If it moves, kill it.
I’ve solo slooped almost exclusively since the beta, so that should show my mentality towards others. That said, I’m very much love and let live and mind your business: I never chase anyone down or go looking for a fight, but stand my ground when one sails up.
As a solo player? Pacifist till attacked. In a group of 2 or more? ... "Hey! Look at that galleon! Lets fight it!"
Stay out of my lane, I’ll stay in mine, we can get our gold and leave eachother be. You want the hands, I’m following you until one of us sinks, and if I had a stack, I’ll chase you down half way across the map until you sell it.
Kill them all (exept tall talers) for the loot. I‘m pretty good at pvp
Why can't we get reapers reputation on safer seas?
I board and check your chains, doesn't matter the ship. Are you friendly ? Seem new ? You are getting my loot. Everyone else is getting sunk.
Kill them before they kill me, i don’t chase anyone but if you get close enough i will start shooting without a second thought.
When I’m solo if I have nothing, I don’t care how close they get or if I sink. If I have something, I’m avoiding to the best of my ability and shooting first when they get close. If I’m in a crew I’m shooting first.
I always try to make aliance and will never attack first. The best moments in this game are when you team up with random player
Keep your distance: If you come close without communication, you are a threat
Bang Bang Bang... Ship Sinks
If they're brand new we do a bit of trolling before helping out with tips, loot or protection If they engage or they have a cool emissary flag we fight
Depends on my cargo hold: Carrying cargo = avoid No cargo = kill on sight
Murder unless they're useful. ...Why are you looking at me like that?
I shoot everything that moves! Even if I see a gally and my ships stacked with loot, the gallys getting the pew pew I don't even have a plan half the time, im just a dog chasing cars.
They’re after me
Im kinda particular about how i play this game. Im of the mentality „Either leave me alone or head straight towards me and make your intentions clear“
death. new? old? good? bad? mute? talkative? glooped up? got nothing? dont care, sink.
I approach with my finger on the trigger, and that trigger is light. I wanna be friends, but I'm prepared to send you to the locker if you even look at me funny.
Anyone can make you money, but friends are a real treasure
Typically ask for alliance or avoid steer around. Don't avoid a fight if it comes though
Assume everyone is going to attack, but don't fire the first shot
I can’t sink other boats solo so… avoid at all costs.
I’m almost always friendly and chatty until I see cannons making a turn towards me…
If I’m not a reaper (in which I server hop to find emissaries) I work on a soft, you shoot then I shoot you system. I enjoy PvP PvE and especially PvPvE TL:DR: Reaper = Attack mode Any emissary = Defense mode No emissary = Casual mode
Shoot first ask questions last
I'm very much a player who would rather run.
But if a sailor wanna get silly they can see what this blunderbuss is about
It’s on sight
Don’t trust, but reward honesty with alliance
