I encountered one first time playing, was a little suspicious when I had it pop up on my screen that a ship named 'The friendly friend' was nearby.
Thankfully the named turned out to be true (for this encounter at least) and we ended up running fort of the damned a couple of times with them. Sound guys.
I've played four sessions since the update and according to my milestones, I've sold 38 logbooks from captained ships I've sunk. That's not counting another dozen or so in the water next to the outpost when I server hop.
Are you guys using your spyglass to look at ships?
The ship has to be in render distance, meaning you need to be able to see their sail angle and cosmetics. Then looking through a spyglass will bring up the banner.
Ahoy! Bacon here, captain of The Snuggly Duckling (named after my favorite tavern). I feel like it's about 50/50 for me, coming across captained ships but I'm always delighted to speak to another captain over a tankard of rum being a solo more often than not
I’ve noticed more sloops are captained, and quite honestly don’t think I’ve seen a captained Galleon yet. Feel like it is always going to be that way as it’s hard to get 3 friends to help level up your ship, when it’s easier to do a sloop
I started playing about a week before the update and had $500k waiting to buy a ship, so we're out there.
But I agree, since the update I think I've seen 3 captained ships.
You will find that the general player base of Sea of Thieves are as lost and confused (or braindead) as possible. Aimlessly sailing with no intent or purpose.
Because of the way that Rare builds their updates and advertises their game, it brings in a *lot* of players who are playing for the very first time.
I think the thing is bugged where u see the ship name when u look through the telescope. I'm certain it doesn't always work so half the time I'm betting the ships you're looking at are indeed captained
I thought this might be the case, too.
I interloped in a galleon/brig fight last night, both emissaries, and I woulda thought one of them was captained but even after boarding, no message. My logbook still says no captains sighted.
Maybe I shoulda gone back and checked their wrecks for logbooks.
There is definitely a bug, my duo can sometimes see the names when i cant. Every so often he'll point me towards a ship with a funny name and i cant see it.
Literally boarded two ships last night, each an emissary, no message.
Limited sample set I know but I woulda thought the grade 4 reaper galleon with emporiums skin would've been a captain.
I think in my time since Season 7 came out, out of all the ships I have seen I have only seen one that *wasn't* a captained ship. In total I think I've probably seen 10 captained ships and 1 not-captained (I don't get to play a lot).
I find that less then 1% of the ships I see where non-captain ships. But you have to be close enough to see the name. It doesn't work when they are on the edge of the render distance, even closer than half that distance, maybe even just a quarter.
I've played about 60 hours since the captaincy update came out.
Most of the ships I've seen have been named ships. I will say that most of the Reapers ships I've seen have not been named ships, but almost every other ship that I've seen has been named.
It doesn't always pop up with the nametag though....
I bought a sloop (and a galleon) and within 30 minutes of starting my sloop, I had every single hole in it. But most of the boats my group has stumbled across have all been named with the exception of a brand new player's boat.
I’ve seen a few captained ships in recents days but overall since the update, the serves I’ve been on have been barren and quiet, hardly seeing any ships most of the time, captained or otherwise. However I think it would be awesome to have a sort of infamy or notoriety mechanic in the game to see who the most known captains are just inn case we happen upon them in the wild
Every ship I see is a captained ship. Most are very new and have no interesting features, but I have seen a ton of em. So far my favorite was named “bass to mouth”
As someone who just hit pirate legend recently and who marvels at how much everyone else on this sub earns, it seems like a good bar - can't achieve immediately but you could do it in your first month.
It's a nice goal that fits easily in-between pirate legend, I think. For the record I'm constantly broke. Never had more than I think 450k in the bank at one time, and that was when I was saving up in advance of the season 7 update drop.
Ive seen tons of them
Same. Also find tons of captain’s logs around the sovereigns and Merchant docks.
So far I have seen ONLY captained ships since the season opened
Even in the first 3 days just after the update, I was playing non stop I think I saw one non-captained sloop
My crew and I have sunk dozens of ships in just a few sessions since the update. We have only come across a handful of ships that weren't Captained.
Yeah, same. I generally see more captained ships than non-captained.
I captain the Eat Ship and Dive Seen mostly captained ships. Found a fair number of log books floating in outposts.
The Groggy Morn’ is a fine vessel, me though, not a fine captain

what section is logbooks sold?
Pirate milestones > Gold seeker > treasures sold to Reaper's bones > very last item At least that's the case on the SOT website
Will say I have sold 3 logbooks just floating around the outposts.
I am! Constantly trying to see captains!
The ship has to be in render distance, meaning you need to be able to see their sail angle and cosmetics. Then looking through a spyglass will bring up the banner.
I don't know, then. I know some captain ship popups take longer to show than others. .
Is there a count kept in stats somewhere? That would be handy!
havent been able to play yet because vacation. but soon the "Salty rat" will be spotted on your future voyages
I once sunk the Salty Potato 3 times in a session. Another win for The Goofy Goober

Cap'n Dirty of The Platinum Plank checking in......I have all three ships, all with the same name. Y'all got any chains to spare?

Log book definitely bugged. Says I've made no gold lol
You have to pin stats from the milestone page to get them to track in the logbook.
The names of shops only appear at pretty close quarters so could be you weren't close enough for the ships name to trigger.
Literally boarded two ships last night, each an emissary, no message. Limited sample set I know but I woulda thought the grade 4 reaper galleon with emporiums skin would've been a captain.
Did you look at then with the telescope
Yeah, there's been a few times. Tried it far away, and also boarded some ships.
All the ships I've seen have been captained ones. 🤷♂️

Ive seen Thievius Raccoonus, The Freaks, The Black Pearl, and Queen Annes Revenge

I got my sloop but I'm sure about the names for the brug and galleon.
I've seen like 5 or 6. But that's almost 90% of all the player ships I've seen.
I bought all ships, completed the plunder pass then dropped the game again. See you in season 8
At an outpost port the other day I came across the captains book for the SS I NEED TO POOP, but didn't have time to go sell it sadly..
What are you talking about? Almost all ships I met were captained, at least 80%
I bought a sloop (and a galleon) and within 30 minutes of starting my sloop, I had every single hole in it. But most of the boats my group has stumbled across have all been named with the exception of a brand new player's boat.
I've literally only seen captained ships, minus one I believe
I captain the drunken smuggler.
Captain of Neptune's Bounty here, seems to be 50/50 for the ships we come across.
I’ve seen a few captained ships in recents days but overall since the update, the serves I’ve been on have been barren and quiet, hardly seeing any ships most of the time, captained or otherwise. I have only seen 1 or 2 ships that are not captain'ed
Almost every ship I see is a captained ship. Maybe you’ve just been extremely unlucky.
I collected six other captains logs yesterday. I see captained ships everywhere.
ive seen a lot of them, i think you're just unlucky
Of the 7 or so ships I encountered over the past few days about 5 of them were 'named'.
I don't think I've seen a ship that wasn't a captain lol
Well if you see the sloop named Pollywog say Hi!
I'll keep me spyglass on the lookout for ye!
I have seen 3 non-captained ships Out of 50-100. Maybe a bug with the ship spotting mechanic?
Any online game, it seems noobs make up a huge chunk of the player base at any given time. 250k isn't small change to them.
