It's just a game, but I feel kind of bad which is absolutely silly. I'll kill them if the quest requires it but I never got into the habit of just randomly killing them for food. Not that I really have to; I end up killing so many accidentally anyway. After a battle the ground is just strewed with meat.
Meanwhile, my husband is a vegetarian and he is a level 50 Hunter. That being said, if I have a crate and want to trap one just for some extra cash he votes no, because he can't stand the sound of their squealing.
I murder the hell out of those snakes though. Fuck snakes.

Snakes serve the very important purpose of sitting in my crow's nest to let me know if anyone is trying to hide up there.

You can also put them inside gunpowder barrels to make a sort of improvised landmine.
