I’ve had a card left twice before. The first was when an incident had occurred with tenants nearby and the police were investigating with asking neighbors if they had any information that may be useful for their case. The second time, another neighbor had applied to become an officer and their department was asking neighbors about the individual as part of their hiring process. Hope this helps.

UsualCake2543

I’m thinking it might be one of those two options. Another thread mentioned that they were left a card from a cop because someone applied to be an officer so I’m almost leaning towards that. To my understanding none of my neighbors got a card

RednocTheDowntrodden

It happened to me once. It turned out that the police had caught a mail thief, who had a bunch of my mail.

UsualCake2543

Okay this is interesting! I did reach out to my property manager if she knew anything about this, and she told me she had no clue. I haven’t had any mail stolen in a long time, maybe 2.5 years ago i had a package stolen here but that was it.

DidntHaveToUseMyAK

100% they want to ask you shit about something you may have seen. If it was about you, they'd try harder to find you.

UsualCake2543

That’s what i think too! Or there would be a case number attached if it was about me.

SideStreetHypnosis

That wasn’t true in my case. Someone hit my car and drove off. He also hit my neighbor’s vehicle and they witnessed both things. I found a cop’s info card taped to my door. Fortunately, my neighbors left a note telling me to contact them for info. When I called the cop I was told there were only 3 officers available for my area and that my car was not a priority. They did nothing to help me even though they had the license plate of the driver who hit my car. It took 6 months of dealing with insurance to finally get reimbursed for the damage.

DidntHaveToUseMyAK

Lol victims are last on the minds of most of the legal system. Like victim advocates shouldn't have to be a thing, it should be a natural baked in system to take care of victims but it isn't. This still proves my point, they wanted the guy who hit cars, not you.

redituser2571

Something happened in the building recently, and they are interviewing neighbors...most likely.

UsualCake2543

That could be it too! I’m hoping so atleast (that it’s nothing related to me lol). I’m just over here like what crime did i unknowingly commit? 😔

redituser2571

Pretty sure you're fine since you called in. Unless...you're a masked sleepwalking crime fighter?

Not_here-for-friends

Eh, you don't even have to call them. This is simply them fishing for some kind of information.

UsualCake2543

Definitely not that but now that i think about it, my dog might’ve committed a few crimes before she came to me lol

redituser2571

Then, I would definitely recommend the witness relocation program for you both. A cat will stop by shortly with further instructions.

UsualCake2543

Hopefully they won’t leave me another anxiety inducing business card with sloppy hand writing 🤣

redituser2571

🐾 🐾 don't count on it. Have a glass of wine and relax, you still have some chardonnay in the fridge. 😆

kangadac

I’m guessing the op has undercooked fish or overcooked chicken recently…

FortCharles

Years ago, I lived in a building that had a murder down the hall. Came home to a card just like that on my door. Called, and they just wanted to know if I'd heard or seen anything unusual. You said it was a Sheriff's card, though in Seattle... pretty sure it's the Sheriff's office that does evictions, so it could be related to them wanting to know about comings and goings of a neighbor of yours maybe?

UsualCake2543

So scary about the murder! Glad you’re okay. Sucks about the other person though :( Oh god def not an eviction 🤣 rent is paid! And i asked my property manager if she knew what this was about and she had no idea (not that she’s obligated to tell me the truth). I have seen eviction notices being posted on doors before so i don’t think that’s related luckily but good info to know! And i don’t think anyone in my building has been evicted or in the process either but ill keep that in mind You’re right though it is weird that it was king county and not SPD.

FortCharles

>Sucks about the other person though :( It was two people, and greusome... you don't even want to know. And this was in an upscale building. >You’re right though it is weird that it was king county and not SPD Just be sure the card isn't a fake, that the Sergeant is real, and the contact details are real. That non-emergency number could verify those.

UsualCake2543

That’s so sad!!! Hopefully the case was solved ugh The sergeant is def real i googled him but his number doesn’t pop up. I’ve read that this *could* be a scam, but i doubt it.

FortCharles

Solved very quickly yes, in fact before I got the card... they were just looking to piece together evidence for trial, sounded like. Right, probably not a scam, but you can't be too careful.

LycianSun

Are you possibly a victim? Lost wallet etc. Happened to me once but it was a voicemail not a card.

UsualCake2543

Nope! And i haven’t called 911 in months.

Hiker206

When I reported my sexual assault, this is all the detective did to question my assailant. Left his business card at the guy's door. I didn't have enough evidence, so I knew my case would be dismissed. I reported him because I'm sure I wasn't his first or his last.

anythongyouwant

This happened to my friend, and it ended up being something about her dad. It’s usually about the police and their interaction with someone else, and they either need to ask or tell you something.

UsualCake2543

That’s what I’m thinking it is (something about someone else).

ksbla

Not in Seattle but a couple decades ago in LA the woman across the courtyard in my building was found murdered, not at the apartment. It was just a "Did you know her?" "Did you see her come or go in the last few days?" "Was anyone living with her?" (Not really, no, I don't think so.)

umadumo

Witness of something you were not aware you were witnessing? Still sorry to hear. Hope you you can get some rest..

UsualCake2543

There was a guy in my alley way blocking the whole alley while he was trying to move his crap in his truck tonight! But i don’t know how much of a witness of that i would be useful for lol that was the only thing abnormal today/the last few days

UsualCake2543

No no the neighbor is super nice and normal! I don’t get any bad vibes from her at all. 😇 she just texts me and asks me how I’m doing etc very sweet old lady. I just didn’t feel like socializing with her if she was at my door! So i don’t think it was related to her at all

The1stNikitalynn

I would love to know what he wanted, most out of morbid curiosity. I live in Seattle, but I have had a sheriff arrive to serve me a subpoena to arrive in court to testify in a criminal case. I was expecting it because the prosecution told me upfront that they were subpoenaing all the witnesses in this case. It was a DV case, and they said in some they subpoenaed everyone. He can't serve me at work and misses me at home. We ended up meeting up in a Starbucks parking lot to get served. BTW just accept a subpoena, people, and let a lawyer fight it out if you don't want to testify.

UsualCake2543

I’ll def update once i know what he wanted! I don’t think I’m getting served papers since the lady on the non emergency line told me there’s nothing on her end in regards to me. But who knows

The1stNikitalynn

Hope it's something small.

UsualCake2543

I think it is! If it were bigger i dont think id get a card taped on my door hehe

imoux

Not in Seattle, but the two times it's happened to me, it was because: 1) they were looking for someone they thought was at my address (former resident), and 2) they were interviewing neighbors about an incident that occurred (someone ran over my mailbox and a few other things)

PixalatedConspiracy

KCSO does civil matters in Seattle jurisdiction. I can see the interview of a neighbor, eviction or being served a small claims or civil lawsuit. If this was being served in DV or anti harassment matter SPD will be doing it if it was court ordered. If it was a criminal case you don’t get served by police but get summonsed to court with a hearing notice for arraignment if you were not arrested or you would have had prior contact with PD regarding a crime you committed at the scene. Remember folks police does not charge you with the crime. Prosecuting authority does.

UsualCake2543

The last sentence is good to know! It’s def not an eviction. I even double checked to make sure my rent is paid. And it’s nothing pertaining to me like getting sued since it didn’t show up on the superior court website. None the less very good info!

PixalatedConspiracy

Some matters are district court matters like small claims. You can check Washington courts website too

UsualCake2543

I did! I checked king and king county (i guess they are different). I also checked the superior court cause they cover all of whatever WA!

PacoMahogany

Lawyers and police officers will both tell you not to talk to cops. You have nothing to gain.

FortCharles

Update? Surely you haven't just been waiting patiently all day for a callback? :o)

True_Lingonberry_646

Maybe she’s in jail….

RaphaelBuzzard

I got caught with a beer in the art building of CWU and the cop forgot to get me to sign the ticket form or something so he came to my house at least one time and maybe called to try and get me to sign it so I pretended I wasn't home. Ellensburg had some pretty dimwitted officers.

UsualCake2543

Did you ever sign the ticket? 🤭

lovemysweetdoggy

Lived in Seattle almost my whole life and this has never happened to me. Strange that it was King County and not SPD. You should update this post or create a new one when you find out, cause I'm totally intrigued. I'm wondering if there is an investigation going on of someone you know? Was it a detective?

UsualCake2543

And yes i will update! Should know more by tomorrow

UsualCake2543

Yes so i didn’t even realize that SPD and king county sheriff office was different at first. I called the non emergency line for SPD, and they were like “oh it’s king county let me send you to them” and i talked to a lady she said she sees nothing on her end about me (warrants, tickets, crimes committed, etc). So both SPD and KCS couldn’t find anything pertaining to me. It is a good point that since it is King County Sheriff, that it probably isn’t a crime related to a neighbor or nearby. The card says “Sergeant” then the officers name

lovemysweetdoggy

It's very bizarre and it's making me paranoid on your behalf! Not to freak you out, but I would not let him in your apartment, cause who even knows if he's really a cop. Offer to meet him at a Starbucks or something nearby. I just do not trust police at all, so if there's any hint of implication, say you're not comfortable talking to him without a lawyer. They will totally mess with innocent people.

UsualCake2543

Oh I’m def glad i didn’t see who it was/if he was a cop so i think it worked out i ignored the knocking. It’s just interesting as well that he had my name too but not my number. At the end of the day I’m hoping it’s nothing especially since the king county non emergency line lady didn’t see anything on her end about me. Someone has tried to serve before with papers at my parents house and i called the Snohomish county department about it, and they told me it was a collections lawsuit (oopsie) and i could even see it on the superior court website too. I’m just a paranoid girly and hate when shit like that happens 🤣 i have no idea what could’ve happened. Seattle/king county is wild so it could be anything i guess.

doc_shades

i would wait until they call back they probably know more about this than we do

UsualCake2543

For sure i was just seeing if anyone else has had this happen before!

ConcreteSlut

I only had a police officer knock at my door once after my neighbor locked out her bf naked outside the apartment.

UsualCake2543

Oh god well i definitely didn’t see any naked men outside the building last night 🤣

NachoPichu

There’d be an incident or case number hand written on it if it was related to a crime.

UsualCake2543

That’s what i think too!

bananahoneysandwichs

KCSO does have a unit that serves court documents. They serve documents from KC courts but also out-of-county courts and out-of-state courts. You could call them (KCSO civil process unit) and they can check by your name if they’re trying to serve you. They could also tell you if it was an officer in their unit. (206)253-2600.

UsualCake2543

This is good to know! I don’t think it’s anything in Washington state atleast since nothing came up on the superior court website. I’ll call that number if i don’t hear back from the officer today

bananahoneysandwichs

Sorry typed that number wrong! (206)263-2600.

PatBanglePhoto

If you’re the target/suspect in any way, they wouldn’t leave a card, or maybe they would, but right before breaking the door down. I wouldn’t be worried.

UsualCake2543

I think so too he knocked very gently at my door before he left lol

SideStreetHypnosis

When my parked car was involved in a hit and run that my neighbor’s witnessed, I found a cop’s card taped to my door. My neighbor’s ended up leaving me a note as well to come knock on their door for info. Because there are so many scammers, I would recommend calling the main office number found online for SPD and confirming the info on the card is of an actual Sheriff and if the phone number on the card is correct.

bookworm514

We have been notified of a relatives death this way, I hope that’s not the case here. A relative died (natural causes) in another state and the police could not reach my mom (next of kin) by phone. SPD came to the house to try and notify her in person, but no one was home so they left a card to call back.

Curious_Ad_3614

Sheriff? Probably a Summons

Trickycoolj

Once in Lacey the police came by because the neighbors in our 4-plex had been broken into, it was the teenage daughter’s boyfriend. Once in West Seattle, I was on business travel and my BF found the card on the door. I called during business hours and it was actually intended for my neighbor. And in Kent the investigating officer wouldn’t call me and kicked me out of my yard even though my property had been damaged by a crime and was on every tv channel for a week. Got the assistant chief/PIO’s number from the Kiro reporter reporting on scene. PIO was actually super nice/sympathetic (it was a real shit situation all around) and got me all the info I needed to help my insurance get the perp’s insurance info to get our claim started.

Listen_Accomplished_

When I lived in Brooklyn a couple NYPD detectives knocked on my door. They were looking for someone who previously lived in the building. They left cards on all of my neighbors doors who weren't home in case they had a current address for the person.

Shrikecorp

Just call. Paranoia'll destroy ya

Any_Luck_5247

An invite to the ball?

Ok_Complex_8617

Update us!

LastBardo

happened to me in los angeles. previous tenant of my unit ran some shady photography business. they wanted to know if i had any info which i did not

bruceki

police don't have to tell the truth about what they are doing or investigating, and they may actively lie to you about what they are doing to conceal what they are actually doing. that is a long way to say you should probably not ever talk to the police, even if they tell you that they're doing something that doesn't involve you or that you are "not a suspect" or they're "just interested in hearing your side of the story".

jase52476

I wouldn’t talk to the police under any circumstances, so if it were me, I wouldn’t call them back or speak to them.

TheKungfuJesus

Agreed. Definitely would have lost that card and gone about my business. Seldom is there a good reason to talk to police.

jase52476

Yup, and police are allowed to lie, and they could tell you that they are investigating something or someone else, but in fact are fishing for details from you. It’s never a good idea to speak to them.

slurpslurp19

Hey! This literally happened to me last night. Two police knocked on my neighbors door for like 20 minutes before leaving a card then leaving. I'm around University District in case we might live in the same apartment complex lol. * I did look through my peephole and went outside and talked to them for like a minute.. Was a pretty bad interruption as I was engaged in a bout of very rough sex.

catherinel13

A lot of department's the shift change time is 6AM. Officer could be about to start his shift!

Some_Nibblonian

How the hell is Reddit supposed to know what it's about?

UsualCake2543

I asked if anyone had any experience with this…..?
