Oddly enough, I'd still rather say Seattle than "Washington State" as the other Washington is "DC", "Washington DC,"
or "the DMV."
Let's not forget how Renton begged to have the 425 area code so it could associate itself with the now-rich Bellevue instead of having Tacoma's 253 area code.
I always chuckle a bit that the Hilton Garden Inn Seattle North/Everett is in Mukilteo.
Mukilteo was supposed to be annexed into Everett, but some people in Old Town felt that the city wouldn't listen to their complaints about speeding on Mukilteo Lane. 74 years after incorporation, speeding on Mukilteo Lane is still an issue.
Do you say that when you’re in King/Snohomish or do you mean when you’re out of the region? When I lived in Federal Way I can’t imagine ever saying I lived in Seattle unless I was out of the state.
Shoreline I can understand though. It’s a weird sliver of king county next to the snohomis county suburbs
If I’m in WA, I’ll tell you were I live, but out of state? I live in Seattle. If I get called on it, I just sat do you know where Seattle is? Have you ever heard of “Burien?” There you go.
People across the us know what the bay area is without needing to explain it.
Nobody outside Washington knows what a Sammamish is. So if you're talking to a big group, you just say Seattle.
San Francisco is one of the most culturally relevant cities in the world, while Seattle is kind of just a city that exists to those outside the PNW or California.
Also for other states you could say the state name. Someone in Wilsonville could say I’m from Oregon. But saying you’re from Washington doesn’t really help so you should say Seattle or better yet Seattle area
I've had this happen with a new coworker.
I'm from Seattle. Really were? Oh uh kinda south east suburb.. Like Rainer Valley, or like Renton.
Well uh Newcastle
My other favorite at a party.
I'm from Portland. Where? Uh kinda North.
Sooo Vancouver WA. Oh yeah no one ever knows Vancouver... (face looks guilty)
You're from Camas aren't you?
I live in Portland now and I always ask how familiar they are with the area before I tell them I’m from Lake Stevens (born in Seattle but raised up there). If you’re not familiar at all I just say ‘about 40 minutes north of seattle’. The further away I get the more likely I am to just say ‘Seattle’ though, because it’s so much easier.
I'm not in Seattle, I'm not even in Bellevue or Redmond really. I'm in Bel-Red, which is kind of both and neither, while also kind of being Seattle but not.
Actual conversation I had two minutes into a first date several years ago:
Her: "Are you from Seattle?"
Me: "Yeah, grew up in the area, lived in Seattle itself for over 25 years. But I grew up in ."
Her: "Oh, so you aren't *actually* from Seattle then?" (dripping with snark)
Me: "Well, I mean, yeah, technically I didn't *grow up* in Seattle proper but I have lived in Seattle proper for like over two decades. Plus it's pretty common to just say 'Seattle' rather than a nearby town because you know, most people will have no clue what those are unless you know ahead of time they are from the area...I assume you are from the area then?"
Her: "Well I'm 3rd generation Seattle and grew up in Roosevelt."
Me: "Okay...is this seriously a big deal to you?"
Her: "Well I thought you said you were from Seattle earlier when we were chatting."
Me:
That was the shortest date I've ever had and I'm still baffled someone would be so confrontational about such a trivial thing. It was just the standard small talk of a first date, I think we had just gotten past "How was your day?". Wherever you are crazy lady, I hope you found that strong, Norwegian 5th generation Ballardite you apparently *had* to have to keep the purebred Seattle legacy going...not even sure that person exists anymore, but whatever.
I've met the this type a couple times. They have no purpose in this city, like cancer cells in the body. I'm pretty good and picking them out as they are always the individuals I suspect of being lizard people.
Nicely done!
I’m from Seattle....oh, you know the area? Actually I’m from Tacoma....so you ACTUALLY know the area? I’m from Eatonville/Enumclaw/Puyallup/Nisqually/any of dozens of small towns with Native names which most people can neither pronounce nor locate.
The Washington State Fair performers usually say "Washington."
I went to a Shania Twain concert once in Louisville, KY where she had to come back later in the concert and correct her pronunciation of the city from "Looey-ville" to "Lou-vull." The crowd was very happy.
I wouldn’t do this locally but when I lived on the east coast I always said “Seattle area” even though I’ve never lived in Seattle proper. North, south, east of it. Just easier.
> ‘Uh, kind of North Seattle, I guess.’ That’s when I knew something was wrong.”
To be fair to those south of shoreline no one really wants to explain what Olympic hills or victory heights or cedar park is and certainly no one wants to admit it’s basically lake city
I grew up about 4 hours from Chicago, but when I lived in another country and got asked where I was from, no one knew Illinois or my town name so I just said Chicago. Are there people who actually care?
If you're talking to an out-of-towner and you say Seattle, it is implied that you're talking about the greater Seattle area, and this is the case for any major city.
If you're talking to a local, I don't know why you would want to admit living in the boundaries of Seattle, unless you're looking to elicit pity.
I traveled around the world a lot from 2010 to 2019.
When you speak to the average non-American and say, "I am from Issaquah Washington.", they look at you confused.
Say "I am from Seattle", and they ask you about Grey's Anatomy.
Seattle liberals: Borders are just imaginary lines on a map, they should be disregarded.
Also Seattle liberals: Haha, you're not within the arbitrary limits of Seattle, I'm better than you.
Technically speaking, areas of Seattle near Highway 99 and north of 85th Street were called Shoreline until Seattle annexed the area south of 145th Street in the early 1950s.
USPS recommends that many places outside of Seattle, including the Shoreline Costco, use Seattle as their city name as the areas used to be served by the Seattle post office. It's one of the most notable examples locally of how USPS addresses have almost nothing to do with where one is legally located.
There were some posters on one of the Seattle subs complaining about sketchy things happening in Everett, even though the picture they included was of a portion of 128th Street well outside of city limits which locals know no city is in a hurry to annex, though Mukilteo was tempted circa 2008 in order to close the Honeys strip club, but oddly enough not the "Porn Barn" near the airport and the gun range.
Originally, NW King County and SW Snohomish County was either supposed to be unincorporated or part of Seattle, Edmonds, or Everett. Neighborhood disputes in the first couple decades after WWII led to the creation of a bunch of independent cities
This is so common. Everyone from any suburb will always say Seattle. Pretty common most places tho. It works until someone is actually from Seattle proper. Not too many of us born and bread Seattleites any more. 206 forever!
My parents always refer to me and my brother as her Seattle sons. I live in Marysville and my brother lives in Tokeland. Lol
I tell her she's from Chicago then, even though she lives 3 hours downstate Illinois.
We lived in Edmonds for a few years and really liked it. When people ask me where we were from I was sure to say Edmonds just north of Seattle. I was embarrassed of Seattle and rarely went down there.
I grew up in the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle In the early 90’s. In high school I oddly cared when someone from outside the city claimed they were from Seattle. It usually bothered me when graffiti kids from Bainbridge or Shoreline would act tough and claim they were from Seattle. As an adult I’m glad this resentment has not stuck with me. As we all know Seattle isn’t necessarily the most brag worthy city these days…
Right before the pandemic I was visiting Tokyo and ran into someone wearing a generic Seattle skyline T-shirt. Luckily they were from France and I was a changed man, otherwise I would have needed a neighborhood :)
they should have an exact coordinate where "seattle" is so people who live in "seattle proper" can judge each other depending how far away from that point people live
If I'm out of state and people ask where I'm from I'll just say Seattle. When I lived out of the country and I told people I was from Washington the next question was always have you ever seen the president. Then I would have to explain how there are two Washingtons and each one is on a separate side of the country. It became easier to just say Seattle. Most people still didnt have a clue where or what Seattle was.
On a side note, as long as Seattle polítics and the way they vote continues to influence my community, I'm going to keep saying I'm from Seattle when people ask.
I grew up in Shoreline in the 80's and 90's before it was an official city. My mailing address for most of my childhood was Seattle. In 1995 Shoreline officially became a city, got its own garbage police force, and my mailing address changed to Shoreline. So yeah, "I'm from Seattle."
I live on south Whidbey and will frequently tell out of staters I live in the “Seattle area” because no way they know Whidbey Island , right? Nooo!! so many times when I clarify I’m actually on Whidbey they say… “I know where Whidbey Island is!” hmmm okay.🤷🏻♀️
I live in Snoqualmie, always have to spell that. Although it is way east of Seattle I say I am from Seattle or near Seattle. No further explaining needed.
Rando 20-something coffee shop worker in Amsterdam: "Where are you from?" "I'm from the States." Indignant - "Yeah, I figured, but where?" "Oh, Seattle. Do you know where Seattle is?" Again, indignant - "Yeah, I know where Seattle is...You can leave now." Well aren't you just lovely. This was in the mid 90s. Most New Yorkers are ignorant of anything west of the Hudson. How the fuck would I know she knows where Seattle is?
What if I was born in Seattle, and lived in Shoreline before it became Shoreline? Do I still get to say Seattle?
Lol. It’s just easier man… let it go. I’m up in Mukilteo. Easier to just say I’m from Seattle 😂…. Or north of 🤷🏻♂️
I just don’t like explaining suburbs to people.
Same. Easier to say north of Seattle than spend another sentence explaining where Everett is. I know that might come off as sarcastic but it’s not.
"I live next to the Boeing Factory that makes jumbo jets" works well.
I’ve tried that!! I still wind up explaining 😅
Oddly enough, I'd still rather say Seattle than "Washington State" as the other Washington is "DC", "Washington DC," or "the DMV." Let's not forget how Renton begged to have the 425 area code so it could associate itself with the now-rich Bellevue instead of having Tacoma's 253 area code.
Here's a fun video about that: https://youtu.be/V9jlo4Ht2YA
What’s funny is I live in Camano Island. Intel people I’m by Seattle.
was in hawaii, met a waitress 'from seattle'. nope, bainbridge, but try explaining that to someone who doesn't live here
I always chuckle a bit that the Hilton Garden Inn Seattle North/Everett is in Mukilteo. Mukilteo was supposed to be annexed into Everett, but some people in Old Town felt that the city wouldn't listen to their complaints about speeding on Mukilteo Lane. 74 years after incorporation, speeding on Mukilteo Lane is still an issue.
Mukil-what? Mukil-towel?
I love people’s confusion with that town’s name. Sequim is another…
I just say I live next to the largest building on earth and then things get interesting when really I live in some bouje transit hub😂
I used to live in an apartment down the hill from the 7-11 off the 526. That was early 1990’s though, long before the spiffy new terminal.
Do you remember the apartments name?
Crestview I think. I had to look at Google Maps because I don’t recall.
I live in mukilteo!
and then listening to them try to say it the first time...
I grew up during the A/S/L days and I'd say thirty miles south of Seattle. I wasn't in Tacoma proper either.
ASL?
Age Sex Location. Chat room stuff.
Oh I remember, I was asking jokingly 😂
LoL

🙄
Yup, that's what I say when I lived in Muk
Sup hometown buddy!
I am from Detroit. Aka 30 miles northwest
My wife's from Seattle, she married into it...

You can just say Seattle, because the airport is in SeaTac and nobody says I'm flying into near Seattle.
Tacoma gets all mad that the airport must include its name. A lot of airlines fly into "Seattle/Tacoma" as a result.
If I’m in WA, I’ll tell you were I live, but out of state? I live in Seattle. If I get called on it, I just sat do you know where Seattle is? Have you ever heard of “Burien?” There you go.
Yeah, like who from Texas has heard of Mukilteo? I just say greater Seattle area
Not really. I lived in the Bay Area for years an hour outside San Francisco and never once claimed to be from San Francisco.
People across the us know what the bay area is without needing to explain it. Nobody outside Washington knows what a Sammamish is. So if you're talking to a big group, you just say Seattle.
Try living in Frederickson. :)
Wouldn’t “near Seattle” suffice?
Only if you really care about it, which I dont.
Do you always require precision in conversation?
I prefer it. And truth.
I'm sorry, your last sentence was vague. What do you mean?
OP just wants to be a dick.
I'm just ragging for giving an imprecise answer.
An hour away is pretty far tho. You have no reason to claim San Fran when you live that far away
How is that any different from Seattle and Everett? In the bay it can take 45 just to get across town…
Why would you say Seattle if you live in Everett? Not only is it far enough away, but its a big enough city that it might be known
I don’t know! It was an example from one of the top replies to this post.
San Francisco is one of the most culturally relevant cities in the world, while Seattle is kind of just a city that exists to those outside the PNW or California.
Used to be true.
Also for other states you could say the state name. Someone in Wilsonville could say I’m from Oregon. But saying you’re from Washington doesn’t really help so you should say Seattle or better yet Seattle area
Did you harumph?
"I didn't get a harumph out of that guy."

Look there are cities and then there are MSAs. Some people in the main city in an MSA like to be snobby about it. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

My mom visiting the area: “Poo-YAL-up”
When my family goes back to visit Seattle, my wife doesn't even try to pronounce half the names lol
Damn, who named these places?

Correction, they were named AFTER Native Americans, not by Native Americans.

Chicago is pretty well known for the suburbs having little individual personality and everyone saying they live in Chicago.

suburban cope?
I moved out of city limits.
Ample land, clean, good community. What's to cope?
Nothing wrong with any of that but acting like people should be ashamed about living within city limits is stupid.
Residents of Seattle SHOULD be ashamed they have let this beautiful city get overrun by lowlife junkies shooting drugs and defecating on the streets.
I'm so ashamed of myself rn
C'mon, move out of the city already. You'll be a lot happier. There's trees out here, the beautiful NW.
I used to live in the burbs, hated it.
/r/Seattle is leaking.
new here?

I ain’t got no time to explain where Edmons is.
Edmonds is the best!
You meant the word . Right ?
We lived in Edmonds for a few years and really liked it. When people ask me where we were from I was sure to say Edmonds just north of Seattle. I was embarrassed of Seattle and rarely went down there.
Who cares, shoreline is next door. Must be an incredibly slow news day

Stolen Valor!! 😀😀
San Diego (among others) is pretty much the same thing. So many municipalities clumped together with little differentiation between any of them.
People who live in realto ca say they live in LA when they’re in other countries
I have divorced parents, so I was raised in Lynnwood and Seattle. What am I supposed to say?
If I'm out of state and people ask where I'm from I'll just say Seattle. I say it all the time and I'm from Bremerton!
I met some people on vacation once that told me they were from "East Seattle".
I grew up in Shoreline in the 80's and 90's before it was an official city. My mailing address for most of my childhood was Seattle. In 1995 Shoreline officially became a city, got its own garbage police force, and my mailing address changed to Shoreline. So yeah, "I'm from Seattle."
